Denise Varney
Denise Varney, 58, of Belfry, dedicated wife, mother and grandmother, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, at Pikeville Medical Center.
Born Nov. 3, 1955, in Ypsilanti, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Ruby E. Reynolds Smith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Ermal and Ida Reynolds; and her paternal grandparents, Schade Smith, and Ras Smith and Bertha Layne Smith.
Denise was a homemaker and she served as a cheerleading sponsor for many years at the Varney/Southside Grade School. She was a member of the Belfry First Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Billy T. Varney of Belfry; her children, Attorney W. Kent Varney of Pikeville, Mitzi Rebecca (Jason H.) Cross of Belfry and Niki Elizabeth Varney of Belfry; two brothers, Joseph Thomas (Donetta) Smith of Louisa and James Ollie (Belinda) Smith of Lexington; three grandchildren, Jonah Thomas Varney of Pikeville, Noah Jase Cross and Luka Kenton Cross, both of Belfry; five nieces and nephews, Karri Smith Gibson, Madison Smith, McKinzie Smith, Mason Smith, and Charles Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, in the Hatfield Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Mark Helton officiating. Burial will follow Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy.
Pallbearers will be Chris Blackburn, Les Todd, Bobby D. Varney II, Thomas Varney, Glenn Hammond and Charles Wayne Hancock.
Honorary pallbearer will be Bro. Mark Helton.

Ralph Williamson
Ralph Williamson, 83, of Pikeville, died Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, at Cedar Creek Assisted Living, Pikeville.
He was born in Varney, June 27, 1931, the son of the late J.L. "Landon" Williamson and Belle Francis Williamson.
He was a retired car repairman for the N&W Railroad and a member of the Pilgrim Home Old Regular Baptist Church, Brushy.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, JoAnna Ray Williamson; an infant son, Palmer Williamson; one brother, J.L. Williamson Jr.; and two sisters, Betty Ruth Lowe and Joyce Young.
He is survived by one son, Tommy Williamson (Kimberlee) of Beaver Island, Mich.; one brother, Kenneth Williamson of Rockhouse; and four grandchildren, Blake Williamson, Hollie Williamson and Dylan Burrows, all of Ypsilanti, Mich., and Riley Williamson of Beaver Island.
Ralph was very blessed with the care and support of the staff at Cedar Creek Assisted Living as well as his personal aides, A.D. and Wendy.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Bent Ridge Cemetery, Meta. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Wednesday, with special services at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cedar Creek Assisted Living or Hospice of the Bluegrass.
Lillian Bentley
Lillian Margaret Bentley, 86, of Dorton/Jenkins Hwy., Jenkins, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2014, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Pike County, March 12, 1928, the daughter of the late Charlie Wright and Nancy Ann (Wright) Wright.
She was a quilter and gardener and a member of the Old Regular Baptist Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Bradley Bentley; one daughter, Cynthia Short; and one brother, Roland Wright.
She is survived by her husband, Eulyus Bentley; one son, Gregory Bentley; two daughters, Catherine Schrock and Sandra Faulkner; two brothers, Rollie Wright and Lester Wright; three sisters, Edith Calhoun, Mabel Anderson and Wanda Solsbee; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Danny Belcher and others officiating. Burial followed in Green Acres Cemetery, Whitesburg. Arrangements were under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Michael Adney
Michael Wayne Adney, 55, of Wheelwright, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2015, at Parkview Nursing Home.
He was born in Wayne County, Mich., Sept. 13, 1959, the son of the late James R. and Eunice Slone Adney.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two grandsons.
He is survived by two sons, Michael Gerald Adney of Romulus, Mich. and Thomas Wayne Adney of Ecorse, Mich.; two daughters, Belisha Lecrone and Jessica Adney, both of Jackson, Mich.; one sister, Deborah Burke of Wheelwright; and 12 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, at Mt. Olive Old Regular Baptist Church, Pippa Passes, with Old Regular Baptist Ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Mouth of Trace Cemetery, Pippa Passes.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home of Martin.
Visitation will be all day Saturday at the church.
E.C. Chapman
E.C. Elcana Chapman, Jr., 83, of Kimper, died Friday, January 30, 2015, at St. Marys-Elizabeth Hospital, Louisville.
She was born Nov. 14, 1931.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by J. W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Patricia Richardson
Patricia J. Richardson, 84, of Collinsville, Ala., formerly of Pikeville, died Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, at her home.
She was born in Pikeville, July 12, 1930, the daughter of the late Earl Hunt and Fairy Justice Hunt.
She was a bookkeeper, helped the Humane Society and Eastern Star, and was of the Baptist faith.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Richardson; one son, Earl Thomas Hankins; her first husband, Curtis Hankins; and her second husband, Max Butcher.
She is survived by one grandchild, Kristi Williams; three great-grandchildren, Jackson Williams, Harper Williams and Korbyn Grey Williams; one daughter-in-law, Reita Hankins; one stepson, Larry Richardson; two stepdaughters, Vanessa Looney and Caroline Mullins; and five stepgrandchildren, Brock Looney, Jason Goff, Justin Goff, Heather Mullins and Isaiah Dalton Richardson.
Funeral services will be held at noon Friday, Aug. 15, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Steve Knisley officiating. Burial will follow in Johnson Memorial Park, Pikeville. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Carl Smith
Carl Douglas "Fidge" Smith, 75, of Phelps, died Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, at his home.
He was born in Rawl, W.Va., Feb. 5, 1939, the son of the late Ballard Smith and Ethel Mae Thompson Smith.
He was a retired construction worker, a U.S. Army veteran, and a member of the Peter Creek Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by one son, Aaron D. Smith of Phelps; two stepdaughters, Ashely Sturgeon of Edgarton, W.Va., and Tracy Rice of Phelps; two brothers, Tommy Smith of Williamson, W.Va., and Ballard Smith Jr. of Columbus, Ohio; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, in the Peter Creek Presbyterian Church with Pastor Tim Dodenhoff and Benny Freeman officiating. Burial will follow in the Smith Cemetery, Phelps. Arrangements are under direction of Phelps Funeral Services.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Friday.
Elva Mullins
Elva Damron Mullins, 80, of Elyria, Ohio, died Thursday, August 14, 2014, at the University Hospital of Cleveland.
She was born in Belcher, May 23, 1934, the daughter of the late King and Canzada Looney Damron.
She was a caregiver at the Nord Center, operated the Elva Mullins Home for the mentally challenged for 15 years and founding member of the New Hope Apostolic Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her one son, Stanford R. Mullins; six brothers, Pearl Damron, Sonny Buck Damron, Burla Damron, Hermit Damron, Jacob Rayvean Damron and Bob Damron; four sisters, Ola Mae Stalker, Merle Crowther, Melissa Francisco and Ledna Collins; one grandson Darrell B. Estep.
She is survived by three sons, Erick (Lori) Mullins of Brooklyn, Ohio, Stephen R. (Teresa) Mullins and Jason A. (Erica) Mullins, both of Elyria; one daughter, Christina Berardinelli of Wellington; one sister, Francis Gail Chaney (Brad) of Belcher; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 19, in the J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Ray Sayers officiating. Entombment will follow in the O.T. Hinton Mausoleum, York Mausoleum, Johnson Memorial Park. Arrangements are under direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Katie Oakes
Katie Bernice Oakes, 72, of Three Mile Creek, died Thursday, August 14, 2014, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Dorton, August, 16, 1941, the daughter of the late Thomas and Hannah Osborne Johnson.
She was a homemaker and of the Freewill Baptist faith.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin Johnson and Jerry D. Johnson; two sisters, Golda Mullins and Bessy Mullins.
She is survived by one daughter, Jerri Caldwell; three brothers, Leonard Johnson, Bill Johnson and Garry C. Johnson.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 17, in the Lucas and Son Funeral Home with Hubert Popper officiating. Burial will follow in the Tom Johnson Cemetery, Three Mile Creek. Visitation is Saturday 6 pm. Arrangement are under direction of Lucas and Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Dolores Poole
Dolores “Dodie” Poole, 79, of Harold, died Monday, August 11, 2014, at the Hospice Care Center in Lexington after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
She received a full scholarship to Morehead-King Daughter and was in the first graduating class from their nursing school. She worked or 42 years at Pikeville Medical Center, where she served in many roles including Director of Nursing.
Dodie was a kind and cheerful person who loved life and will be sorely missed by all who loved her. Her hobbies included watching the Wildcats play basketball, listening to fifties music, and sunbathing by her pool.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 16, in the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel with Don Williamson officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home just prior to the service from 12 noon Saturday until 2 pm.

Linda Salisbury
Linda Salisbury, 64, of Teaberry, died Thursday, August 14, 2014, at her residence.
She was born January 5, 1950, at Martin, the daughter of the late Ambers Howell and Lillie and William Newsome.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Pilgrim’s Prayer Church, Dorton.
She is survived by a son, Paul Douglas Salisbury of Pikeville; two daughters, Paula Johnson of Teaberry and Emma Lou Burchett of Ivel; and nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, August 17, at Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, with Tim McCoy and the Tom’s Creek Freewill Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Salisbury Cemetery at Printer.
Visitation will be all day Saturday at the funeral home.
Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
