Essie Elswick
Essie Bartley Elswick, 87, of Michigan, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2015, at St. Anthony Heathcare Center, Warren, Mich.
She was born Feb. 17, 1927, the daughter of the late Willard and Hama Kiser Bartley.
Besides he parents, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Irene Bartley and Hessie Virginia Goodson; five brothers, Delmer, Odies, Tremble, Emery and Otis; and two sisters, her twin sister, Hessie Hamilton and Gladys Thomas.
She is survived by one son, Bradley Elswick; one daughter, Lorine Akers; three brothers, Offie, Johnny and David; two sisters, MinnieBelle Hamilton and Edith Hershek; nine grandchildren; and several great grandchildren.
Services were held Thursday, Jan. 29, 2015, at Solid Rock Church, with Pastor Bruce Mullins and Pastor Lonnie Mullins officiating. Burial followed in the Willard Bartley Cemetery, Penny.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Harold W. Ficks Funeral Home of Mt. Clemons, Mich.
Stephen Stanley
Stephen Michael Stanley, 65, of Pikeville, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, at his home.
He was born in Pikeville, June 25, 1949, the son of the late Clyde Marshall Stanley and Flora Loraine Tibbs Stanley.
He was a former employee for, Columbia Gas Company and Weddington Theater and Pikeville guttering. He served as a Pikeville City Police officer and Fireman. Also, he was a Pikeville Jaycee and Johns Creek Jaycee.
She is survived by one daughter, Niki M. Stanley of Lexington; and one sister, Sonja Stanley of Hunt’s Branch.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, in the J. W. Call Funeral Home Chapel, with Morgan Chapman officiating. Burial will follow in the Stanley Cemetery, Coal Run Village.
Arrangements are under the direction of the J. W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Sarah Steele
Sarah Inez Gilliam Steele, 53, of Wurtland, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2015, at her home.
She was born in Pike County, Feb. 25, 1961, the daughter of the late Ivan Gilliam and Linda Dixon Gilliam of Lower Johns Creek.
She was a homemaker and member of the Flatwood Church of Christ.
Besides her mother, she is survived by her husband, Shelby Steele of Wurtland; and son, Lewis Todd Williamson of Wurtland; one brother, Richard Gilliam of Lower Johns Creek; and one grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, in the Community Funeral Home Chapel, with Avis Thompson officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Community Funeral Home of Zebulon.
Michael Adney
Michael Wayne Adney, 55, of Wheelwright, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2015, at Parkview Nursing Home.
He was born in Wayne County, Mich., Sept. 13, 1959, the son of the late James R. and Eunice Slone Adney.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two grandsons.
He is survived by two sons, Michael Gerald Adney of Romulus, Mich. and Thomas Wayne Adney of Ecorse, Mich.; two daughters, Belisha Lecrone and Jessica Adney, both of Jackson, Mich.; one sister, Deborah Burke of Wheelwright; and 12 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, at Mt. Olive Old Regular Baptist Church, Pippa Passes, with Old Regular Baptist Ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Mouth of Trace Cemetery, Pippa Passes.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home of Martin.
Visitation will be all day Saturday at the church.
E.C. Chapman
E.C. Elcana Chapman, Jr., 83, of Kimper, died Friday, January 30, 2015, at St. Marys-Elizabeth Hospital, Louisville.
She was born Nov. 14, 1931.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by J. W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Ruby Farley
Ruby E. Farley, 85, of McCarr, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2015, at the Tug Valley ARH Regional Medical Center, South Williamson.
She was born in Barnabas, W.Va., Nov. 22, 1929, the daughter of the late Charlie and Mary Diamond Duty.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Varney Missionary Baptist Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Herbert M. Farley; one son, Herbert “Herbie” Farley Jr.; two brothers, Talbert Raymond Duty and Roy Duty; and one sister, Roberta Duty.
She is survived by three sons, Talbert Randy Farley, Kenneth L. Farley and Brian K. Farley all of McCarr; five sisters, Ruth Shannon of Willis, Texas, Belva Burke of Sherwood, Ohio, Corena Stabnav of Dearborn, Mich., Patricia Cleo Chaffins of Georgia and Margie Farley of Hardy; one brother, C.W. Duty of Wapakoneta, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with John George Blackburn officiating. Burial will follow in the Farley Cemetery, McCarr. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday with special services at 7.
David Franklin
David Monroe Franklin, 86, of Forest Hills, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015, at Trinity Healthcare, Williamson, W.Va.
He was born in Branchland, W.Va., Sept. 28, 1928, the son of the late Arnold and Lulu Adkins Franklin.
He retired after serving 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, 10 years in the Secret Service and 10 years in the sheriff’s department in Florida. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Williamson, president of the United Methodist Men, historian for the Church, and representative for the parish.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Jay Franklin.
He is survived by his wife, Lou Anna Lowe Franklin; five children, David Robert Franklin and Sherri Pike, both of Maryland, Julie Lewis of Florida, Tammy Guidarelli of Illinois and Mark Lowe Sutton of South Carolina; two brothers, Haskel Franklin and Harold Franklin, both of Florida; eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, in the First United Methodist Church, Williamson, with Allen E. Johnson officiating. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Visitation is from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, at the church.
Gary Hamilton
Gary Hamilton Jr, 46, of Culloden, W.Va., formerly of Pike County, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2015, at his home.
He was born in Pikeville, March 16, 1968, the son of Emogene McKinney Hamilton of Pikeville and the late Gary Hamilton Sr.
Besides his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Randy Hamilton.
Gary was a former manager for Papa John’s.
He is survived by two daughters, Amanda Hamilton (fiancée David Justice) and Courtney Dawn Paige (Samuel) Bartley of Pikeville; four brothers, Ronnie Hamilton and Larry Hamilton, both of Pikeville, Rodney Hamilton and Alex Hamilton, both of Wellston, Ohio; seven sisters, Christine Mullins, Carolyn Hamilton, Wanda Estrada, Patty West and Debbie Weddington, all of Pikeville, Crystal Norman of Wellston, Betty Sue (Walter) Moore of Floyd County; three grandchildren, Joseph Bryer Dean Bartley and Jazmine Daniel Bartley (due in February), and Ally Justice; a special friend, Richard Thompson of West Virginia; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and friends who knew and loved him.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, in the Left Fork Old Regular Baptist Church with Elder Jimmy Hall and the Rev. Robert Justice officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, East Shelbiana. Arrangements are under direction of Jones & West Funeral Home of Phelps.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Friday, at the church, with special services at 7 p.m. Saturday.
