Florence Tackett
Florence Tackett, 80, of Long Fork of Virgie, died Thursday, August 13, 2015 at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born on February 22, 1935, to the late Roland and Allie Roberts.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lindy Burg Tackett; a son, Ronnie Tackett; three brothers, James, John L. and Tillos Roberts; and two sisters, Cindy Balcam and Christine Stewart.
She is survived by three sons, Don R. (Nehia) Tackett, Ralph (Lois) Tackett, and Roland Keith Tackett, all of Virgie; three daughters, Linda C. Tackett of Lenore, W.Va.; Jessie (Randall) Younce of Little Robinson, and Florence Ann Kilgore of Virgie; one sister, Rellie Vanhoose of Bowling Green; and 16 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m., at the Hall and Jones Funeral Home with Greg Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Johnson Memorial Park at Pikeville.
Visitation will be at the funeral home Saturday with services at 7 p.m. with Sam Casebolt officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hall and Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Herman Fleming
Herman Fleming, 75, of Long Fork, died Tuesday, July 14, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born July 10, 1940, the son of the late George Washington Fleming and Gracy Fleming.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Barry Neal Fleming; one brother, Lloyd Fleming; and one sister, Alpha Elswick.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Fleming; one son, Tracy Fleming (Rhonda) of Caney Highway; one daughter, Regena Fleming Estep of Wise, Va.; two brothers, Dave Fleming of Virgie and Albert Fleming of Durand, Mich.; four sisters, Bertha Patterson of Indiana, Hazel Meade of Jackhorn, Verna Johnson of Virgie and Mable Tackett of Virgie; six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren, along with one future great- grandchild. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 17, in the Hall & Jones Funeral Home Chapel with Freewill Baptist ministers officiating. Burial followed in the R.H. Ratliff Cemetery, Shelbiana. Arrangements were under direction of Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Paul Gearheart
Paul Roberts Gearheart, 90 years of age of Harold, Floyd County, Kentucky, was called home to be with the Lord on July 24, 2015, surrounded by his family.
He was born July 23, 1925, near the head of Toler Creek, a tributary of Big Mud Creek in Floyd County. He was the son of the late Fred Gearheart and Rachael Roberts Gearheart of Harold, who were also natives of Floyd County. He was the third of six children, having one brother, Walter Fred Gearheart of Harold; and four sisters, Daisy Mavis Gearheart Kelly (deceased), Helen Gayle Gearheart Whitt (deceased), Nell Aileen Gearheart (deceased), and Billie Sue Gearheart (Keith) Abbott, Shelbyville, Ky.
Paul was the devoted husband of Elaine Ward Gearheart. To this union of 62 years, he was blessed with three children, Stephen Eugene Gearheart (preceded him in death May 18, 1968), Paul Douglas, his wife Linda, Gearheart and Susan Gearheart, her husband John, Schmoldt of Harold.
Mr. Gearheart is also survived by six grandchildren, Adam Douglas Gearheart, Heather Mashea Gearheart, Crystal Elaine Gearheart Frazier, Ashley Nicole Gearheart Williams, Paul Jacob Hans Schmoldt and Clay Gearheart Schmoldt; and eight great-grandchildren, Elaine Alexxa Kay Gearheart, Alivia Myrea Gearheart, Paul Clark Wesley Frazier, Landon Eli Ward Frazier, Abigail Free Adams, Emily Grace Gearheart, Lindy Sue Reagan Gearheart and Mylee Nycole Williams.
The love he felt and expressed for his family and friends expanded as he developed a personal relationship with God. To seal the commitment he made to HIM, he was baptized, and became a member of the Church of Christ.
His civic interests included: member of Thomas C. Cecil Masonic Lodge since 1956; founder of Sandy Valley Water District, serving parts of Pike and Floyd counties; member of Big Sandy Area Development District and chairman in 1968; member of Kentucky Telephone Association Board of Directors and president in 1979; member of Floyd County Development Authority; member of advisory board of Prestonsburg Community College 1987-2000 and chairman the last six years.
He served on the board of directors of The Bank Josephine from 1987-1993; member of original board of directors of the Kentucky Opry; member of board of directors for Center of Rural Development, Somerset, Ky.; member of board of directors of Kentucky Cable TV Association – 1975; received Honorary degree at Pikeville College commencement, May 12, 2001; received an Honorary Associate degree in Humane Letter at the spring 2005 commencement from the Big Sandy Community and Technical College Board of Directors.
Because of loyal service and dedication to the Kentucky Community & Technical College System (KCTCS) Paul was recognized with the honorary title “Emeritus” in 2006.
Paul, with Elaine working by his side, bought the Roberts/Olga Telephone Company serving 72 customers with crank phones on June 1, 1953. That venture developed into the following: Gearheart Communications Inc. d/b/a Coalfields Telephone Company serves over 7, 000 landline telephones in parts of Pike and Floyd counties. Inter Mountain Cable Inc. began operations in 1965 and provides service for approximately 25, 000 homes in parts of six counties in Kentucky, Mingo County, West Virginia, and Buchanan County, Virginia.
Inter Mountain Cable has separate divisions including Coalfields Long Distance which serves approximately 5, 600 long distance subscribers and a Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC) serving approximately 600 subscribers. The CLEC also has a telecommunications switch in Lexington, Ky. Home Satellite Service is another division of Inter Mountain Cable. Home Satellite Service is a sales, installs, and bills and collects for DirecTV.
WPRG is the Local Access Channel of Inter Mountain Cable. It is affiliated with radio stations WXLR Harold-Pikeville and WXKZ Prestonsburg-Paintsville. The radio stations are owned and managed by Adam Gearheart, the grandson of Paul R. Gearheart and the son of Paul D. Gearheart.
PDNS, LLC is owned by Paul D. Gearheart and Susan Gearheart Schmoldt. PDNS LLC has two main divisions: Mikrotec Internet Service and Mountain Telephone and Data Systems (MTS).
Mikrotec Internet Services serves approximately 14, 000 customers in 57 counties in Kentucky and in three states with network operating centers at Harold, and Winchester Road in Lexington. It also has a data center that manages servers for various customers around the world and a 24x7 Help Desk with clients around the country including major hotel chains.
Mountain Telephone and Data Systems provides installation and maintenance service for commercial telephone and data networking. The company provides service for a number of school districts and such other companies as Keeneland Race Course, Toyota, approximately 10 hospitals, banks, and installation of Lucent and IBM equipment statewide.
Gearheart Communications also owns a 20 percent interest in East Kentucky Network. East Kentucky Network owns a 350-mile redundant fiber ring that connects the independent telephone companies of Eastern KY to Winchester. It also owns Appalachian Wireless which serves approximately 43, 000 cellular customers and approximately 11, 500 paging customers and approximately 5, 500 prepaid cellular customers. Appalachian Wireless serves 19 counties in Kentucky and Buchanan and Dickerson counties in Virginia. The paging footprint covers over one-half the state of Kentucky. Gearheart Communications and the related companies have over 150 employees.
The readers of Pike County’s “Appalachian News Express” selected Paul as one of 100 of Pike County’s Most Significant People in the 20th Century stating, “Paul is past 80 years of age and severely handicapped (blind) but still comes to the office every day. He continues to be directly involved in the operations of the companies although on a lesser scale than in the past, and says he has no plans to retire.”
Funeral service for Paul Roberts Gearheart was conducted Tuesday, July 28, 2015, at 1 p.m. in the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with entombment following in Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, Ky.
Joan Johnson
Joan Johnson, 88, of Pikeville, died Friday, July 24, 2015, at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington.
She was born in Pikeville, June 22, 1927, the daughter of the late Robert “Pete” Campbell Johnson Sr. and Gertrude A. “Tommy” Johnson.
She was a general clerk at the Pike County Clerk’s office, worked on the Model City Program and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Pikeville.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Robert C. “Bob” Johnson Jr..
She is survived by one nephew, Dr. John Richard “Rick” Luecke (Melanie); one niece, Kerri J. Johnson; and seven great-nieces and nephews, Justin Luecke, Allison Johnson, Megan Luecke, Rebecca Johnson, Michael Luecke, Hannah Johnson and Jared Luecke.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, in the First Presbyterian Church with burial following in Johnson Memorial Park, Pikeville. Arrangements are under direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Randy Mann
Randy William Mann, 57, of Huntleyville, died Friday, July 24, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 27, in the Hatfield Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Stepp-Mann Cemetery, Oppy. Arrangements were under direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.
“Hillbilly” McGuire
Charles Lawrence “Hillbilly” McGuire, 38, formerly of South Williamson, died Saturday, July 11, 2015, in Ypsilanti, Mich.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 20, in the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, Chloe Road. Arrangements were under direction of Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.
“Ray” Phipps
Raymond “Ray” Phipps, 86, of Pikeville, formerly from Defiance, Ohio, died Monday, July 27, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.
Ray was born in Pike County, June 8, 1929, the son of the late Walden Phipps and Lula Ramey Phipps.
He was retired from General Motors in Defiance, was a loyal member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of Pikeville Freewill Baptist Church, umpired softball for many years, co-owned Phipps Sunoco and was a bus driver at Continental Local School.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Cantrell Phipps, whom he married
May 11, 1948. Geneva died in 2005. He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Patsy Michelle Phipps; five brothers, Clarence Nelson Phipps, Autie Mason Phipps, Vernis Acey Phipps, James Allen Phipps and Everett Phipps; and two sisters, Alva Hicks and Alcie Lee Hurt.
Ray is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen Phipps whom he married
March 6, 2010; three sons, James Phipps (Guavana), Steven Phipps (Rachel) and Dana Phipps (Kimberly); five daughters, Barbara Densmore (Delbert), Theresa Miles (Bruce), Rhonda Rau (Doug), Vaughnda Prowant (Darin) and Diane Bok (Les); one stepdaughter, Katrina Brooks (Chris); one sister, Dora DeFossett; 23 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a host of loving family and friends.
He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 31, in the Schaffer Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Myers Cemetery, Ohio. Arrangements are under direction of Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville and Schaffer Funeral Home of Defiance.
Masonic rites will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Schaffer Funeral Home Chapel.
Jimmy Rowe
Jimmy Daryl Rowe, 64, of Lookout, died Thursday, July 23, 2015.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 27, in the Bowling Fork Freewill Baptist Church. Arrangements were under direction of Bailey Funeral Home Inc. of Elkhorn City.
Reeda Shuck
Reeda Ann Salyer Shuck, 67, of Rogersville, Tennessee, formerly of Elkhorn City, died Tuesday, July 28, 2015.
She was born in Pikeville, June 10, 1948, the daughter of the late Allen Salyer and Louella Baker Salyer.
She was a beautician.
She is survived by one son, Chris Salyer of Elkhorn City; two brothers, Allen Salyer Jr. of Nashville, Tenn., and Terry Salyer of Elkhorn City; and one sister, Modena Sallee of Pikeville.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 30, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Jim Ed Belcher officiating. Burial will follow in the Ratliff-Childers Cemetery, Ashcamp. Arrangements are under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Visitation is from 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, with services at 7.
Lassie Smith
Lassie Jean Smith, 83, of Hardy, died Friday, July 24, 2015, at the Tug Valley ARH Regional Medical Center’s Skilled Nursing Unit, South Williamson.

Jennifer Thornsberry
Jennifer Ann Thornsberry, 38, of McDowell, died Sunday, July 26, 2015, at her home.
She was born in Pike County, Nov. 13, 1976, the daughter of Roger and Kay Rowe Thornsberry of Indian Creek.
She was a respiratory therapist at Pikeville Medical Center.
Besides her parents, she is survived by her companion, Ricky Caudill; and one brother, Christopher Thornsberry (Katrina) of Bypro.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, in the Hall & Jones Funeral Home Chapel with Danny Wayne Compton officiating. Burial will follow in the Lonesome Pines Cemetery, Weeksbury. Arrangements are under direction of Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
