Clarice Adams
Clarice Jean Fields Adams, 74, of Phyllis, departed this life Thursday, July 30, 2015 at the Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born July 13, 1941 in Letcher County.
Clarice was the daughter of the late Pinson and Alka Fields.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Turley B. Adam; a son, Timothy Adams; sisters, Imal Hall, Erniebelle Fields, Hazel Griffith, Ernestine Martin; and brothers, Virgil Fife, Zack Fife, Jerald Fields, Burland Fields.
She is survived by two loving sons, David (Tena) Adams of Vero Beach, Fla., and Mark Pinson Adams of Fort Pierce, Fla.; brothers, Charles Fife of Indiana, John L. Fife of Florida; three grandsons, Jason Adams of Angel Fire, N.M., David C. Adams, Braxton Adams; a great-grandson Jacob Adams; and one great-granddaughter Lula Mae Adams, all from Ft. Pierce, Fla.
She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday August 1, 2015, at the Biggs Church of God, Feds Creek.
Interment will follow at the Annie E. Young Cemetery at Pikeville.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Phillip Griffith
Phillip Eugene Griffith, 64, of Indian Creek of Virgie, passed away Thursday, July 30, 2015, at the Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born December 23, 1950, the son of the late Lois Roberts McGhee of Marysville, Ohio, and the late Manford Griffith.
He was also preceded in death by his dad; Richard McGhee; and one daughter, Gina Griffith.
He was a truck driver for the Jones Oil Company and was of the Freewill Baptist faith.
He is survived by his wife, Velvie Ratliff Griffith; two sons, Tim Griffith of Virgie and Phillip (Caroline) Griffith of Pikeville; two daughters, Andrea Griffith of Lexington, and Misty (Roger) Williams of West Virginia; three brothers, Danny Griffith, Jerry Griffith and Richard McGhee, all of Ohio; three sisters, June (Ty) Rakes and Carol Wilkinson, both of Ohio, and Karin Winebreneer of Florida; seven grandchildren, Sariya Taylor, Jayden Taylor, Cody Mullins, Taylor Mullins, Jessie Ann Williams, Nicholas Griffith and Mariah Griffith; and one great-grandchild, Selena Griffith.
Funeral services will be held at noon, Sunday, August 2, at the Hall and Jones Funeral Home, with Doug Tackett, James Dotson, Arthur Compton and Eric Fleming officiating.
Visitation will be Saturday at the funeral home, with services at 7 p.m.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hall and Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Rushie Hopkins
Rushie Mae Hopkins (Blackburn), 70, of Shelbiana, passed away Wednesday, July 29, 2015.
She was born August 15, 1944, to the late Columbus Garfield and Mary Opal Blackburn.
Besides her parents she is preceded in death by one son, Jimmy Garfield Hopkins; five brothers Paul Blackburn, Buster Blackburn, Roger Blackburn, Virgil Blackburn, Bruce Blackburn; three sisters Arelene Blackburn, Charlene Blackburn, Symbol Enlow Blackburn; and two grandchildren, Irene Nicole Hopkins and Ricky Arron Hopkins.
Rushie is survived by her loving husband James (Carlos) Hopkins of 52 years; one son Ricky Allen Hopkins; one daughter, Carla Renee Hopkins Slone; six grandchildren, Olivia A. Hopkins Thacker, Jamie Elizabeth Nicole Slone, Dylan Garfield Hopkins, James Cody Allen Slone, Daniel James Robert Hopkins, and Lindsey Gracie Marie Hopkins; one brother, Jerry Blackburn; and two sisters, Sharon Gibson Adkins and Shelby Gene Adkins.
Family will accept friends Saturday Aug. 1. at the Thacker Funeral Home Chapel.
Funeral services will be held in the chapel at 1 p.m., Sunday, August 2, with Buddy Ford, Randy Walters and Bob Werntz officiating.
Burial will follow at the Annie E. Young Cemetery in Pikeville.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Thacker Funeral Home in Pikeville.
Billy Howell
Billy Howell, 78, of Betsy Layne, died Thursday, July 30, 2015.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, in the Nelson Frazier Funeral Home Chapel.
Arrangements are under direction of Nelson Frazier Funeral Home of Martin.
Ireland Rose
Ireland Rose, 70, of Lookout, died Wednesday, July 29, 2015, at his home.
He was born in Pike County, March 23, 1945, the son of Helen (Elkins) Rose and the late John Langley Rose.
Besides his father, he was preceded in death by his children’s mother, Eva Rose; and two brothers, Jimmy Wayne Rose and Danny Rose.
He is survived by his loving mother, Helen Rose; two daughters, Elaine Thacker (Steve) and Michelle Rose; one son, Jeffrey Rose; two sisters, Nancy Oller and Rita Dutton; four brothers, Dale Rose, Eddie Rose, Ronnie Rose and William Rose; five grandchildren, Steven, Brittany, Dalton, Jordan and Kelsie; and one great-grandchild, Lucas.
He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Funeral services will be held at noon Sunday, Aug 2, in the Poor Bottom Freewill Baptist Church with Richard Gibson officiating.
Burial will follow in the Buddy Ratliff Cemetery, Poor Bottom Road, Lookout.
Arrangements are under direction of Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is at the church, after 6 p.m. Friday, with special services nightly at 7.
Eddie Shortridge
Eddie Dean Shortridge, 64, of Mouthcard, died Wednesday, July 29, 2015, at his residence.
He was born January 19, 1951, at Mouthcard, the son of Charles Howard and Goldie Fay Hackney Shortridge of Mouthcard.
He was a coal miner.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Toasten; and a grandchild.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sons, Howard Dean Shortridge, of Mouthcard and David Lynn Shortridge of Pinsonfork; three daughters, Cynthia Hurley and Deanna Shortridge, both of Maxie, Va., and Charity Ward of Chilhowie, Va.; a sister, Marie Goddard of Pikeville; a brother, Harrow “Buddy” Shortridge of Defiance, Ohio; and 11 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, August 2, at the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel, with Frank Crum officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, Shelbiana.
Visitation will be Saturday at the funeral home, with services at 7 p.m.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.

Jacqueline Jo Dey, 74, of Dawsonville, Ga., died Monday, July 20, 2015, at her home.

Jimmy Hess
Jimmy Dean Hess, 34, of Hurricane Road, Kimper, died Wednesday, July 29, 2015, at his home.
He was born in Pike County, May 12, 1981, the son of Virgil Dean Hess of Kimper and the late Shirley Varney Hess.
He was a coal miner.
In addition to his father, he is survived by one sister, Angela Chaffins Paul of Kimper; one niece, Sidney Chaffins; and two nephews, Skyler Chaffins and Samuel Chaffins.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, in the Edo Freewill Baptist Church with Eddie Abbott, Bob Bowman, Matt Bowman an Lance Bowman officiating.
Burial will follow in the Varney Branch Cemetery, Kimper.
Arrangements are under direction of Community Funeral Home of Zebulon.
Visitation is at the church, with special services at 7 p.m. Friday.
Beneva Mounts
Beneva Jean Staley Mounts, 85, of McCarr, died Wednesday, July 29, 2015.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, in the Hatfield Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Blankenship Cemetery, mouth of Camp Creek, Argo.
Arrangements are under direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.
Visitation is from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday.
