Gerald "Tim" Shelman
Gerald L. "Tim" Shelman, 79 of Elizabethtown, died Sunday, March 28, 2010 at Elizabethtown Nursing and Rehab. Center. He was a native of Breckinridge County and a member of First Christian Church. He was the former owner of Shelman Implement Company in Elizabethtown, and was a past president of the Kentucky Farm and Power Equipment Dealers Association. He served in the army and was recognized as an honorable Kentucky Colonel. He was preceded in death by his wife of almost 52 years, Evelyn Buckles; his parents, Lee and Sallie Vessels Shellman; two brothers; and two sisters. He is survived by one daughter, Mary Louise Shelman; a son-in-law, Nathan "Chip" Cohen; and a beloved grandson, Alexander "A.J." Shelman-Cohen all of Belmont, MA; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Charlene Hall of Bowling Green. The funeral is Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Elizabethtown with Chris Kiger officiating. Burial to follow in Glendale Christian cemetery in Glendale, KY. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Howard Elliott Gardner
Howard Elliott Gardner, 88 of Elizabethtown, died Monday, March 29, 2010 at his home. He was a native of Hart County and a member of Elizabethtown Church of Christ. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII where he received the Purple Heart and was a Disabled American Veteran. He was a Hall of Fame recipient for the KY High School Athletic Association, where he trained and scheduled high school referees for over 20 years. He retired from the State of Kentucky where he was a Toll Boothe Supervisor. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gid and Rosie Bennett Gardner. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Shuffett Gardner; four sons, James H. (Shelley) Gardner and John S. Gardner all of Elizabethtown, Jerry L. (Micki) Gardner of Washington, DC and Justin (Diane) Gardner of Lebanon; one daughter, Linda Hutcherson of Bardstown; three grandchildren, Justin Gardner, Anitra Routt and Jeremy Hutcherson and three great grandchildren, Millie Routt, Emily Gardner and Jordan Gardner. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Elizabethtown Church of Christ with Bro. John Board officiating. Entombment will follow in Buffalo cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Brown Funeral Home and continue after 10 a.m. Thursday at the Church.
Duell Hueston Bennett
Duell Hueston Bennett, 79 of Elizabethtown, died Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at Atria Assisted Living. He was a native of Hart County and was a member of Severns Valley Baptist Church. After serving in the U.S. Air Force as a Flight Engineer on refuelers, he retired from Civil Service at Ft. Knox as a Helicopter Mechanic. He was a retired salesman for North Hardin Memorial Gardens. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy O. and Leona Druin Bennett. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Rhea Druen Bennett; two sons, Thomas Ray (Christy) Bennett of Elizabethtown and Michael Duell (Catherine) Bennett of Goodlettsville, TN; two sisters, Lavada J. (Carl) Murphy of Sulphur Wells and Barbara C. (Larry) Wells of Bradenton, FL; three grandchildren, Christopher Thomas (Maegan) Bennett of Elizabethtown, Bradley Michael Bennett and Brandon Scott Bennett both of Goodlettsville; one great granddaughter, Audrey Nicole Bennett of Elizabethtown and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home with Rev. John Rice officiating. Burial will follow in Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and continue after 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of Contributions to the Media Ministry at Severns Valley Baptist Church or to the Donors favorite charity.
Russell Layman Hicks
Russell Layman Hicks, 93, of East View, died Thursday, April 1, 2010 at Hardin Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Hardin County, a member of Smith Chapel Methodist Church and was a WWII Army veteran. He retired from P. Lorillard Tobacco Company after 28 years, was a member of the Coca Cola Club and was a Kentucky Colonel. He was also an avid Kentucky Wildcat fan and loved traveling. He had been to every state except Hawaii. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Vena Richardson Hicks, by his stepmother, Ressie Hicks and by his brothers and sisters, Elmer Ashlock, Pauline Robinson, Mary Lucy Witten and Jimmy Hicks. He is survived by his wife, Etta Yates Hicks, two sons, Jackie (Linda) Hicks of Charlotte, NC and Jerry (Brenda) Hicks of Elizabethtown, one daughter, Joanie (Alan) Jarboe of Lexington, two sisters, Juanita Skinner of Louisville and Elnora Goodman of Cecilia, 6 grandchildren, Windy, Tiffany, Laura, Callie, Harvey and Billy, 4 great grandchildren, Isabella, Abby, Jacob and Matthew and a special great nephew, Jason Royalty. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Brown Funeral Home with and Rev. Bill Rounsaville officiating. Burial ,with military honors, will be in Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens. Visitation is 3 to 8 p.m. Friday and after noon Saturday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may go to Smith Chapel Methodist Church.
Anna Mae Higgason
Anna Mae Higgason, 84 of Elizabethtown, died Friday, April 2, 2010 at her home. She was a native of Hart County and a member of Severns Valley Baptist Church and Northside Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Nelson Higgason; her parents, Rola and Mona Tabb Shipp; three brothers, Roscoe Shipp, James Shipp and Russell Shipp and two sisters, Mildred Miller and Edith Wheeler. She is survived by one daughter and her husband, Beverly Dianne and Shervin Sr. Travis of Elizabethtown and two grandchildren, Tara Conzelman-Cheng and Robert Conzelman both of Louisville. The funeral will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home with Pastor Bill Langley officiating. Burial will follow in Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Dorothy Jean Stewart
Dorothy Jean Stewart, 65 of Cecilia, died Sunday, April 4, 2010 at University of Louisville Hospital. She was a native of Jefferson County. She was preceded in death by her father, John Scroggins and her step father, Richard Hillard. She is survived by her husband, George Houston Stewart; one son, George H. (Lisa) Stewart, Jr. of Prospect; three daughters, Laura Christine (Doug) Knecht and Terisa Rachelle (Troy) Johnson all of Elizabethtown and Stacy Marie (Mike) Terry of Howardstown; her mother, Frances Hillard; one brother, Richie Hillard of Crestwood; three sisters, Priscilla (Doug) Curry and Kathy Hillard (Mark) Jones all of Crestwood and Mary Jo (Larry) Larimore of PRP and eight grandchildren, Sydney Stewart, Hayley Stewart, Kayla Knecht, Sam Knecht, Casey Johnson, Joshua Johnson, Lauren Johnson and Fletcher Terry. The funeral will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. Burial will follow in Kentucky Veterans cemetery Central in Radcliff. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of a contribution to the American Cancer Society.
Harold Eugene Burton
Harold Eugene Burton, 70 of Elizabethtown, died Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at Hardin Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Somerset and a former member of Rhudes Creek Baptist Church. He worked in the Commisary at Ft. Knox and shoed horses at Churchill Downs. He loved working with horses, trading and shoeing and liked playing music and working on cars. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles W. and Sophia Marie Taylor Burton and two sisters, Barbara LaPoint and Alma Christine Niemiec. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth Faye Myers Burton; six sons, Tim Burton and James Dwight Burton both of Hodgenville, Eddie Lee Burton, Darren Paul Burton and Branden Harold Burton all of Elizabethtown and Terry Eugene Burton of New Haven; four daughters, Regina Faye Burton of Hodgenville, Selena Renee Peak of Rineyville, Tammy Yevonne Burton of New Haven and Amanda Renee Burton of Elizabethtown; four brothers, James Jarvis Burton, Charles Wayne Burton and Vernon Burton all of Elizabethtown and Glenn Burton of Louisville; three sisters, Margaret Heim of Elizabethtown, Rosie Marie Burton of Glasgow and Beverly Pauline Hicks of Radcliff; 30 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home with Rev. Dewey Keys and Rev. Larry Richardson officiating. Burial will follow in Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday and continue after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
James Eugene "Bosco" Wise, Jr.
James Eugene "Bosco" Wise, Jr., 88 of Elizabethtown, died Thursday, August 6, 2009 at Kensington Manor. He was a native of Hardin County, a member of St. James Catholic Church and the American Legion Post 200 in Louisville. He retired from the KY State Highway Transp. Division and loved sports, especially football and basketball. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Eugene and Marietta Slack Wise; two brothers, Richard Wise and David Wise and two sisters, Elizabeth Goatly and Virginia Wooten. He is survived by his companion, Nora Nall and her two children, Carolyn Straub and Anna Williams all of Elizabethtown; a sister in law, Peggy Wise of Louisville and several nieces and nephews and his cat, Biggie Boy. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home with Rev. Dewey Keys officiating. Burial will follow in St. James cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:30 to 8 p.m. Monday and continue after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
