Margaret and Terje Buggeland
Dr. Margaret Buggeland, 76 and Dr. Terje Reidar Buggeland, 70 of Elizabethtown, died Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at their residence. They were retired OB/GYN's. They are survived by three children, Steven, Irene and Erik and two grandchildren. Terje is also survived by one sister, Sigrun Prestino. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home with Rev. Jeff Hopper officiating. Burial will follow in Hardin Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
1st Lt. Eric David Yates
1st Lt. Eric David Yates, 26 of Rineyville, died Saturday, September 18, 2010 in Zhari district, Kandahar province, Afghanistan. He was a native of Hardin County and attended St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. He was a 2003 graduate of John Hardin High School and a 2008 graduate of the ROTC program at Western Kentucky University. He served in the Army's 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division from Ft. Campbell. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Patty Crabb and Mildred Yates. He is survived by his parents, David and Kathy Crabb Yates of Rineyville; one brother, Nathan Yates of Rineyville and his grandparents, Herbert Crabb of Sikeston, MO and Lawrence Yates of Elizabethtown. There will be a campus memorial service Thursday at 4 p.m. CT at Western Kentucky University The funeral will be Monday at 10 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church with Rev. Dan Lincoln and Rev. Stanley Osborne officiating. Burial with full military rites will be in St. John cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Brown Funeral Home.
William L. "Bill" Osborne, Jr.
William Leslie "Bill" Osborne, Jr., 87, of Elizabethtown, died Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at Kensington Manor. He was a native of Hardin County and a member of St. James Catholic Church. He was selected to the All -State basketball team in 1941 playing for the Rineyville Red Devils. He served in the U. S. Army during WWII and was a Board member of First Hardin National Bank for 19 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus #1455 and the Monsignor McGee General Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He was the former Vice President of Austin Powder and was a Co-Owner of Osborne Brothers Quarry. He served as a State Commander of the American Legion Forty and Eight and as a President of the Kentucky Crushed Stone Association. He served many years as a high school basketball referee. He enjoyed golfing, watching sports, UK Basketball and being with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Mary "Pat" Osborne; his son, Randy S. Osborne; his parents, William Leslie and Louise Genrose Peak Osborne; four brothers, Joseph Marion "Mack" Osborne, James Osborne, Paul Osborne and Pete Osborne and three sisters, Louise Stith, Agnes Dunn and Ann Spears. He is survived by two sons, Wayne (Cindy) Osborne of Knoxville, TN and Patrick (Tish Correa) Osborne of Owensboro; one daughter-in-law, Margee Osborne of Elizabethtown; one brother, Bernard Osborne of Rineyville; and two sisters, Alice Mulhall and Sue Crady both of Elizabethtown. His grandchildren are Leslie Osborne (Louisville), Stephen Osborne (Rineyville), Mallory Osborne, (Owensboro), and step grand children Aaron Teffeteller of Kingsport, TN and Angela Ownby of Knoxville, TN. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. James Catholic Church with Rev. Stanley Osborne officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in St. James cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday and after 10 a.m. Saturday at Brown Funeral Home. A prayer vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Friday. Richard Curtis Shagool
Richard Curtis Shagool of Elizabethtown, passed away on Thursday, September 23, 2010 at the age of 78. "Dick Curtis" as he was most commonly known, was born in Osage City, Kansas on September 1, 1932. He spent most of his childhood in the Highland, Kansas area and graduated from Kansas State Univeristy in 1954. He served three years in the U.S. Army, during which time he was a writer for the Far East edition of the Army's Stars & Stripes publication. After fulfilling his obligation to the Army, Curtis began a 40-plus year career in radio broadcasting. Starting out as a night-time DJ and sports announcer, Mr. Curtis advanced to Sports Director and later, program coordinator at radio station WIEL-AM in Elizabethtown. He was the "Voice of the Panthers" for nearly 30 years, providing play-by-play coverage of Elizabethtown High School baseball, football and basketball. he had the privilege of being associated with several state championship teams, including the 1969 class 2-A football champs, the 1970 and '75 state baseball champs, the 1972 boys sweet sixteen tournament finalists and the 1998 girls sweet sixteen tournament champs. Some of his fondest memories centered around a trip to Abbeville, LA to provide radio coverage of the E'town Babe Ruth League All-Stars during the 1974 Babe Ruth World Series. Curtis was also instrumental in revitalizing local slow-pitch softball leagues during the late 1970's and 80's. He served as Hardin County Softball Commissioner for several years, as well as coaching, umpiring and managing concessions at the E'town softball complex. He was an outdoors enthusiast who enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, outdoors cooking and gardening. Curtis was preceded in death by his father, John Walter Shagool and his mother Elizabeth Shagool Berry. He is survived by a brother, Jack (Mardelle) Shagool of Spokane, Wash.; his former wife and mother of his children, Rebecca Jameson Shagool of Elizabethtown; his present wife, Jayne Humphrey Shagool; two sons, Lynn Shagool of Elizabethtown and Ron (Colette) Shagool of Bardstown; a daughter, Deanna (Robert) Hopkins of Louisville; a grandson, A. J. Shagool of Bardstown; two nephews, Scott and Chuck Shagool and one niece, Stacey Ward all of Washington. He will also be missed by his pet schnausers, Sloopy and Huber. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home with Rev. Carlton Puryear officiating. Burial will follow in Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and continue after 9 a.m. Wednesday at Brown Funeral Home. Geneva Catherine Logsdon
Geneva Catherine Smith Logsdon, 91 of Elizabethtown, died Wednesday, September, 22, 2010 at Kensington Manor. She was a native of Hardin County and a member of Memorial United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Noel P. Logsdon; a son, Phillip Logsdon; her parents, Leslie and Maggie Richardson Smith; two brothers, Leslie W. Smith and James H. Smith; four sisters, Ileen Cruse, Mildred Fife, Hazel Blair and Martha Stojentine and a grandchild, Andrea Lynn Wilcox. She is survived by four daughters, Sarah Louise Wilcox and Jean Logsdon both of Elizabethtown, Joyce Watkins and Mildred Hodges both of Bonnieville; two sisters, Lois (Tem) Cabaniss of Salado, TX and Barbara Sue (Mick) Kabalin of Burgin, KY; eight grandchildren, Kathy Logsdon, Jimmy Wilcox, Bradley Wilcox, Dale Watkins, Teresa Hittson, Wesley Hodges, Sherrie Bridges and Shannon Sullivan; 20 great grandchildren; 10 great great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Mable Thompson Smith of morgantown. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home with Rev. Coleman Howlett and Rev. Bill Rounsaville officiating. Burial will follow in Hardin Memorial Park. Wilbur Ray Vertrees
Wilbur Ray Vertrees, 91 of Elizabethtown, died Sunday, September 19, 2010 at Elizabethtown Nursing and Rehab. He was a native of Hardin County and was a member of Meeting Creek Baptist Church and attended Nolynn Baptist Church in Larue County. He was a retired carpenter and farmer. He was preceded in death by a son, Dale Vertrees; his parents, Elza and Sudie Vittitoe Vertrees; four brothers, Robert, Walter, Russell and Raymond Vertrees; two sisters, Elma Young and Catherine Richardson and a great grandson. He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Christine Vertrees; one son, Larry (Lorna) Vertrees of Elizabethtown; a daughter-in-law, Marlene Vertrees of Elizabethtown; six grandchildren, Michael (Johna) Vertrees and Jason (Samantha) Vertrees all of Elizabethtown, Kristi (Keith) Miller of Eastview, Barbara (Eugene) Bryant of Bonnieville, Brian (Christy) Vertrees of Sonora and Amanda (Keith) Fields of Upton and 12 great grandchildren. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Bruford Duvall and Bro. George Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens. Joyce Ann Crabtree
Joyce Ann Crabtree, 55 of Elizabethtown, died Thursday, September 30, 2010 at Jewish Hospital in Louisville. She was a native of Edmondson County and a member of Belmont Baptist Church, the American Legion Auxillary Post #113 and the Bullitt memorial Post #5710 VFW Auxillary in Shepherdsville. It's not goodbye, just so long for now. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Elton Decker Lindsey and one brother, Barron Lindsey. She is survived by her husband Larry Crabtree; two daughters, Becky Lasley (Brian J. Clark) of Elizabethtown and Leah Crabtree-Gardner (Chris) of Elizabethtown; three brothers, Frank Lindsey of Franklin, IN, Steve Lindsey of Hodgenville and Mike Lindsey of Shepherdsville; three sisters, Betty Hodge of Cox's Creek, Sharon Hopkins of Lebanon Junction and Sarah Crenshaw of Franklin, IN and four grandchildren, Destiny Elliott, Derrick Elliott, Rebecca Jewell Gardner and Benjamin Ray Gardner. The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Bob Tipton officiating. Burial will follow in Hardin Memorial Park. Betty Allgood
Betty Drane Robinson Allgood, 71 of Elizabethtown, died Sunday, September 26, 2010 at Kindred Hospital in Louisville. She was a beloved and devoted wife and mother. She loved life and her family. She was a member of College Heights United Methodist Church and the pianist there for more than 20 years. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Pirtle Chapter and was retired from Keyboard Carriage in Elizabethtown. She was preceded in death by a husband, Ronald Robinson; a son, Jimmy and her father, Carroll Drane. Survivors include her husband, Russell L. Allgood; three daughters, Gina (Terry) Broyles, Rhonda (Doug) Tate and Sandy (Randy) Humphrey all of Elizabethtown; her mother, Edna Drane; six grandchildren, Lucas Broyles, Ashley Broyles, Nicole Humphrey, Zachary Humphrey, Samantha Tate and Libby Tate; two great grandchildren, Dre and Layla Johnson; two sisters, Dianna (Ed) Hunsinger of Goshen and Judy (David) Ward of Elizabethtown; a brother, Ken (Brenda) Drane of Elizabethtown and several nieces and nephews and extended family.
