Elizabeth "Joann" Hornback
Elizabeth "Joann" Hornback, 89 of Elizabethtown, died Monday, October 18, 2010 at Kensington Manor. She died as she lived, peacefully and with grace and dignity and in full confidence in knowing Jesus as her personal savior. She was a native of Denver, CO, grew up in Palo Alto, CA and moved to White Mills as a senior in high school. She attended Stanford University in CA. She was an electrician draftsman for Keiser Ship Yard on the LST and Liberty Ships, which were made in Oakland, CA in WWII while her husband was serving in the Army in Alaska for three years. Joann was blessed with almost superhuman energy, optimism and creativity. She entertained a steady stream of friends with her generosity and sense of mischief and humor with her famous coffee and ice cream. Her spirit was such that "wonderful, wonderful" was her reply to the question, "How are you?" even at 89, even in the last few month of her declining health in the nursing home. She was a lifetime member of Memorial United Methodist Church for over 62 years and was KY mother of the year in 1979. She was a 75 year volunteer for the American Red Cross starting at the age of 16, where she taught many loved ones and older residents swimming and water safety at the former Burnett's Hotel Pool. She started the first Girl Scout Troop in Elizabethtown and had started in Girl Scouts herself at age 11 with Herbert Hoover as her scout leader. She instilled in her to consider her deafness "not as a hardship, just an inconvenience" She took this to heart. Joann loved her art and began painting at the age of 10. She gave painting lessons in her home for 45 years up to the age of 87. A year before her death she was working to complete a life size portrait of Christ. She felt it would be her masterpiece, finished or not, her life itself was a work of Christian art. Her most cherished moment was her born again experience and baptism at the age of 87, an event she shared with her great grandson, Hogan, then 8 years old. Joann lived a life of service for others and her community. Everyone that came in contact with her was blessed and enriched by knowing her. Bob Gray; her mother, Myrtle Thompson Knight; her father, Charles Edgar Knight, her grandson, Jonny Bob Gray; her great aunt and uncle, Josie Dillingham Richardson and Hayward Richardson, owners of the White Mills Hotel, now part of White Mills Christian Camp.
