Charley Nell Llewellyn
Charley Nell Llewellyn, 84, died Monday, November 14, 2011 at Helmwood Healthcare in Elizabethtown. She was born December 3, 1926, in Ashford, Alabama. She earned a bachelor's degree in Sociology and History from Huntingdon College and a Master of Social Work degree from Florida State University. Charley began her career as a social worker in Miami and worked in a few other cities in the south including Atlanta, Georgia before moving to New Jersey where she worked in a Child Guidance Center and a school system. She moved to Elizabethtown in 1965 when her husband went to work for the Crucible Magnetics plant. After a stint as a community planner with the Health and Welfare Council of Louisville and Jefferson County, Charley went to work at Hardin County Schools as a school social worker. She retired from Hardin County Schools in 1987. While working at Hardin County Schools, Charley made a significant difference in the lives of many children and families. In 1978, Charley was named Social Worker of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers-Kentucky Chapter. In 1981, she was named Kentucky Member of the Year by the National Organization for Women. In 1984, she was named Woman of Achievement by the Elizabethtown Business and Professional Women's Club and in 1985 she was named the Kentucky School Social Worker of the Year. Charley contributed time, talent, and effort in support of organizations and causes such as Hardin County Association for Retarded and Handicapped, League of Women Voters, Lincoln Trail Domestic Violence Council, Foster Care Review Board, Wesley Hilltop House, Tender Loving Care Day Care Center, Elizabethtown Business and Professional Women's Club, Hardin County Environmental Council and Hardin County Child Protection Council. She was a charter organizer and board member of North Central Comprehensive Care Center. Charley credited her mother, Lucille Cole, as the inspiration behind her work. Her mother was a good role model because she always had time to help people and do church work. She also instilled in Charley a belief that being female should not be a deterrent to any goal that she wished to accomplish. Charley was an active, tireless champion for the rights of all, and in particular women. She served on the steering committee of the Kentucky Pro-ERA Alliance and actively campaigned for passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. She participated in rallies and marches held in Washington D.C. and Chicago in support of the ERA and testified at a Legislative hearing in Frankfort. She worked to achieve equal educational opportunities for students and served as the Title 1X Coordinator for Hardin County Schools. Charley was a faithful member of Memorial United Methodist Church where she attended the Seekers Sunday School Class. She was a member of United Methodist Women, Unity Circle, and a past member of the Church Administrative Board. Charley was preceded in death by her parents, Lucille Cole and Charles Jackson, husband, William Morgan Llewellyn and stepson, Andrew Llewellyn. She is survived by her stepdaughter, Maxine Llewellyn of Las Vegas, NV, stepdaughter-in-law, Lisa Llewellyn of Austin, TX and step grandson, Morgan Llewellyn of Austin, TX. Ms. Llewellyn has chosen cremation. A graveside service will be held at a later date. Gary Bruce Dever
Gary Bruce Dever, 62, of Elizabethtown, died Friday, November 4, 2011 at the home of a friend. He was a native of Hardin County and a Draftsman for Civil Service at Fort Knox. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Kenneth and Inez Mae Florence Dever; two brothers, Roy Kenneth Dever Jr. and James "Jimmy" Zachary Dever; and his step-mother, Anna Mae Logsdon Dever. He is survived by his brother, Bobby (Fonda) Dever of Elizabethtown; a special daughter, Susan Gifford of Elizabethtown, a niece, Lesley McConn; a nephew, Jason Dever; and a special friend, Mark Dorsey of Harrodsburg. There will be a graveside service 11 a.m. Tuesday November 15th at Valley Creek cemetery with Rev. Steve Hill officiating.
James Michael Duffy, III
James (Jim) Michael Duffy, III of Elizabethtown, passed away on September 28, 2011 at the age of 61. Jim was born on June 12th, 1950 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to the late James Arthur Duffy and Elizabeth (Mulhaney) Duffy. He was a graduate of Park University. True to his Irish heritage, which he was very proud of, Jim was always quick with a smile, a laugh and he never met a stranger. He was employed by the Department of Defense at Fort Knox after retiring in 1994 from the U.S. Army, having served 20 years. He most recently resided in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, but during his career, lived in Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Texas. Jim was most proud of his family, his greatest joy. He loved the Green Bay Packers, Harley Davidson motorcycles, and was an active member of the Patriot Riders and Southern Cruisers. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sigrid Gabriele Langner Duffy; a sister, Kathleen Elizabeth Duffy Stewart and brothers-in-law, Vert Stewart, Deitmar Langner and Hans Gerd Arnolds. Jim leaves behind his sons Andrew and Eric, Andrew's wife Tina, Grandson Sam, Eric's fiancée, Inga Shorokhova and his loving fiancée, Karen Marinko. He will be missed by his sister Patricia (Pat) Consolazione, brothers-in-law Tom, Hans Werner, sisters-in-law Monika Langner, Ulrike Arnolds, 11 loving nieces and nephews, treasured friends Rainer (Margit) Hergit, Burt (Nance) Thompson, Scott (Miriam) Huther, his Fort Knox family, and other loved ones. A memorial service will be held at 12 pm Saturday, November, 12, 2011 at the Kentucky Veterans cemetery Central, 2501 N Dixie Blvd, Radcliff, KY 40160. Johnny Jefferson Ladd
Johnny Jefferson Ladd, 71, of Elizabethtown, died Thursday, November 3, 2011 at Hardin Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Hardin County, a graduate of Elizabethtown High School, a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and a Kentucky Colonel. He was a member of KSPPA and retired in 1995 from the Kentucky State Police as a dispatcher after 27 1/2 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Minnie Lee Heady Ladd. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Deloris June Dailey Ladd; two sons James (Stephanie) Keith of Elizabethtown, and Fred Brent (Missy) Keith of Union Grove, AL; four daughters, Valerie (Ron) Skirvin and Wanda Sue Lyons both of Radcliff, Thea Jeanette Keith of Elizabethtown, and Sheryl Denise (Farrin) Humphrey of Linwood; one brother, Robert Ladd of Louisville; two sisters Betty (Bill) Raine of Rineyville, and Mary Susan (Arch) Cunningham of Elizabethtown; ten grandchildren, Jason Allegretti, Jamii Montoya, Michael Lyons, Matthew Lyons, Timothy Lyons, Christopher Moore, Brandon Keith, Lindsay Keith, Amanda Denning and Kassandra Sherman. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Brown Funeral Home with Rev. Leon Chambers and Rev. Scott Kerr officiating. Burial will follow at Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday and continue after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Kerry Lee Holloway
Kerry Lee Holloway, 19 of Elizabethtown, died Saturday, October 16, 2011 as a result of an automobile accident. He was a native of El Paso, TX and was a brilliant musician. He will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Margaret J. Holloway. He is survived by his parents, Matthew and Kimberly Williams of Elizabethtown; a brother, Seth Williams of Elizabethtown; a sister, Mina Williams of Elizabethtown; his grandparents, Robert Lee Holloway of Rineyville and Catherine Tompkins of Chaparral, NM and an uncle, Michael Holloway of Seattle, WA. Graveside services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and continue after 9 a.m. Wednesday at Brown Funeral Home.
Mary Belle Hornback
Mary Belle Hornback, 84 of Sonora, died Saturday, October 15, 2011 at Kensington Manor. She was a native of Hart County and a member of Olive Hill Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Jimmy Hornback and Edward Hornback; a daughter, Kathy Mae Fulkerson; her parents, Ivan and Elsie Alice Riggs Butler; a brother, James Butler; a sister, Etta Mae Riggs and two grandsons and two great grandsons. She is survived by one son, Charles William (Alvena) Hornback of Sonora; five daughters, Betty Lou Riggs and Patricia Ann Hornback both of Sonora, Opalene (Herbert) Beeler of Glendale, Barbara Sue (Jackie) Riggs of Upton and Norma Jean (John) Botto of Elizabethtown; a step daughter, Virginia Adkins of Brandenburg; one brother, Elvie Lee (Minnie) Butler of Upton; one sister, Frances Riggs of Sonora; 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. The funeral will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Olive Hill Missionary Baptist Church with Bro. Earl Sanders officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Baptist cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 4 - 8 pm and after 9 am Tuesday at Brown Funeral Home.
Ronnie McGuffin
Ronnie McGuffin, 63 of Elizabethtown, died Thursday, October 13, 2011 at Elizabethtown Nursing and Rehab. Center. He was a native of Hardin County and retired from Louisville Board of Trades. He was preceded in death by his father, Chester McGuffin; one son, Aaron McGuffin and a sister, Deltres Thurman. He is survived by two sons, Mark (Lacey) McGuffin of Elizabethtown and Ronnie McGuffin of Hardinsburg, IN; five daughters, Teressa Wood of Elizabethtown, Ronda McGuffin of Lewisburg, Veronica McGuffin of Bowling Green, Kimberly McGuffin and Amber McGuffin both of Hardinsburg, IN; his mother, Iva McGuffin of Glendale; three sisters, C. J. Shepard of Elizabethtown, Connie Hayes of Eastview and Cheryl (Tim) Kaelin of Vine Grove; 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Brown Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Grandview cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday and continue after 10 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Leona Dell Miller
Leona Dell Miller, 95, of Eastview, died Tuesday October 11, 2011 at her residence. She was a native of Grayson County and has been a member of White Mills Baptist Church since 1962 where she was the oldest member. She was a loving wife, mother and caregiver who enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, reading, quilting and crocheting. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Will Miller; her parents, John and Tarasa Franklin Townsend; two sisters and one brother. She is survived by two sons, Ivan (Angeleta) Miller and Howard (Linda) Miller both of Eastview; one daughter, Wanda (Siebrand) Dooper of Owensboro; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. The funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Brown Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Love and Rev. Bruce Underhill officiating. Burial will follow at Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and continue Saturday after 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
