Eddie Lee Burton, Sr.
Eddie Lee Burton, Sr., 47, of Elizabethtown, died Monday October 10, 2011 at his residence. He was a native of Hardin County and worked as a maintenance man for Watterson-Lakeview Appartments in Louisville for 26 years. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold E. Burton. He is survived by his mother, Elizabeth Faye Myers Burton; a son, Eddie Lee Burton, Jr.; a daughter, Katherine Nichole Burton, and his ex-wife, Kathy McStoots Burton all of Elizabethown; five brothers, Timothy Burton of Hodgenville, Darren (Betty) Burton, Branden Burton and James (Toni) Burton all of Elizabethtown, and Terry Burton of New Haven; four sisters, Selena (Billy) Peak of Elizabethtown; Regina Burton of Hodgenville, Tammy Burton of Bardstown, and Amanda Burton of Elizabethtown; one grandchild, Destiny Rose Hammersley of Elizabethtown; good friends Edward and Melissa Day of Eastview; best friend Henry Hornback of Elizabethtown; twenty-nine nieces and nephews; and three dogs, Smokey, Lucky and Coconut. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Brown Funeral Home with Rev. Rodney Troutman officiating. Burial will follow at Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and continue after 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Lennie Jo Roberts
Lennie Jo Roberts, 58, of Elizabethtown, passed away Friday October 7, 2011. Dedicating her life to the field of education, she retired from Kingsolver Elementary School after 37 years of service to Fort Knox Schools. She was a kind and loving daughter, sister, mother and grandmother. She was known for her gentle and patient demeanor and loved by all that knew her. She was preceded in death by her loving mother, Patricia Ann Van Meter. Survivors include her father, Reggie Van Meter and his wife, Martha of Elizabethtown; her sister, Carol Peters and her husband Steve of Elizabethtown; her brother, David Van Meter and his wife Lisa of Murfreesboro, TN; two sons, Jared Roberts, Matt Roberts his wife Stephanie and their son Kai all of Elizabethtown, with a host of loving family and friends. Cremation was chosen by the family and services will be private. There will be a time of rememberance from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, October 15 at Memorial United Methodist Church. Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Expressions of sympathy may take form of contributions to the American Cancer Society.
Margaret Lucille Swartz
Margaret Lucille Swartz, 93, of Elizabethtown, died Saturday, September 24, 2011 at Hardin Memorial Hosptial. She was a native of Muhlenburg County, a member of Valley Creek Baptist Church and a former member of Immanuel Baptist Church. She retired as the Cafeteria Manager at Hardin Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Mitchell Swartz; her parents, Henry and Gracie Belle Daley; three daughters, Ernestine Dillard, Ilene Sloan and Lynn Henon; and one son, Norman Claudie Swartz. She is survived by her daughter, Betty L. Goodman of Glendale; two sisters, Madeline Coy of Hardinsburg and Dorothy Leslie of Shepherdsville; a brother Norman Daley of Louisville; eleven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren. The funeral will be 12 p.m. Wednesday at Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Howard Pryor and Bro. Scott Kerr and officiating. Burial will follow at Elizabethtown City cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and continue after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Leona "Lee" Stephenson
Leona "Lee" Stephenson, 75, of Elizabethtown, died September 22, 2011 at her residence while surrounded by her loved ones. She was a native of Gibson County, IN and retired as a housekeeper from Ireland Army Hosptial. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oswald and Reatha Thompson; three brothers and a sister, Oz, Hank, Riley and Charlotte. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Carl "Skip" Stephenson; her son, Mike (Gayla) Stangle of Frankfort; her daughter Carla Stephenson of Nashville, TN; three grandchildren, Max (Rachel) Schultz, Matt (Mendy) Shultz and Eric (Sherri) Stangle all of Frankfort; six great-grandchildren Kayla, Courtney, Andrew, Alan, Nicholas and Riley all of Frankfort; her sister, Frankie Simnick of Indianopolis, IN; and special friends Shirley Taylor, Carrie Taylor, and Justin McKinney. A celebration of life service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Brown Funeral Home with Pastor Dave Vanatter officiating. Burial will follow at North Hardin Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and continue after 12 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Expression of sympathy may take form as donations to Alzheimers Association, American Heart Association or Hosparus.
Mary Wilma Guest
Mary Wilma Guest, 80, of Glendale, died Sunday, September 18, 2011 at Hardin Memorial Hospital. The Hardin County native was a member of Galilee Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Samuel Guest, by her parents, Clarence William Berry and Mary Eliza Hornback Berry and by two brothers, Andrew Berry and Jesse Berry. She is survived by three sons, Clarence M. (Chris) Guest of Louisville, James R. (Donna) Guest of Brownsville and Troy Lee Guest of Elizabethtown, two daughters, Barbara Ann (Charles) Edlin of Radcliff and Lisa Ball of Elizabethtown, seven grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Brown Funeral Home with Rev. Wayne Matheson and Rev. Steve Alexander officiating. Burial will be in Upton cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Monday and continues at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Brown Funeral Home.
Rev. James Russell Reed
Rev. James Russell Reed, 87 of Elizabethtown, died Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at Woodland Terrace Healthcare. He was a native of Felicity, OH, served in the Navy during WWII and graduated from Campbellsville University and Georgetown University. He Pastored eight Churches in Ohio, Kentucky, Illinois and Arizona and was proud to have started three churches. He was very proud of his mission trips to the Philipines and Africa on mission trips. He taught English and Latin, but loved teaching Special Education and taught Bible Study classes at Woodland Terrace Healthcare and other local nursing homes for eight years. After retirement, he was the visiting Pastor for the shut in ministry and was a devoted gardener, he loved his tomato plants and apple trees and loved fishing, where he caught a black marlin in Mazatlan, Mexico. Although he ministered in several state, he always called Valley Creek Baptist Church home. The visits from his friends and family is what kept him going in his final days. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jo Parker Reed; his parents, Luther and Martha Miller Reed and his siblings, Vera Stroer, Harvey Reed, Raymond Reed, Dorothy Ellis and Violet Rusch. He is survived by his daughter, Kathy Jo Stone, whom he adopted at 14 months old, and her husband, Mark J. Stone of Amado, Arizona; three sisters, Florence Cannon, Betty Jane Moore and Margaret Setters; six grandchildren, Brittny (Nick), Ashley (Clint), James (Brittany), Adam, Carla and Colter Joe and five great grandchildren, Owen, Bostyn, Arena, Brynlee and Gracee. The funeral will be Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Valley Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Kerr, Rev. Don Flanigan and Rev. Howard Pryor officiating. Burial will follow in Valley Creek cemetery. Fellowship meal will follow burial at Valley Creek Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday and continue after 11 a.m. Sunday at Brown Funeral Home.
Mary Viola Burton
Mary Viola Burton 73 of Cecilia, died Sunday, October 16, 2011 at Healthsouth Lakeview Rehab. Hospital. She was a native of Hardin County and lived in Stephensburg for 46 years. She was a member of St. John Catholic Church and was a kind loving-wife-mother-grandmother-great grandmother-sister-aunt-cousin. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ozzie and Martha Elenora French Vessels; three brothers, Bill Vessels, Thomas "Dutch" Vessels and Ozzie Vessels, Jr.; two sisters, Stella L. Keplinger and Martha Lucille Reesor and a granddaughter, Martha Gail "Marti" Humes and son in laws. She is suvived by her loving husband of 56 years, Jesse Franklin Burton, Sr.; six children, Mary Frances Jamison of Elizabethtown, Jessica (Dan Burkhart) Brangers of Vine Grove, Angela Gale (John D. Harned) Young of Glendale, Louann Quigley of Demorest, GA, Jesse Frankie (Barbie) Burton, Jr. of Eastview and Kim (Jerry) Wright of Rineyville; three brothers, Charles "Cotton" Vessels of Sonora, Rev. James Vessels of Elizabethtown and Sidney Vessels of FL; one sister, Barbara Thomas of Elizabethtown; 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Hill and Rev. Leon Chambers officiating. Burial will follow in St. John cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of Contributions to the family.
Mary Constance Litzenberger
Mary Constance Hillman Litzenberger, 92, of Elizabethtown, died Saturday, October 15, 2011 at home. Born in Holyoke, MA, she lived in Elizabethtown for 60 years. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and many civic organizations. Her civic achievements were extraordinary. As Member and then Chairman of the Elizabethtown School Board, her passion was to make academic excellence and universal educational opportunity the top priorities. Her steadfast pursuit of gender equality persisted for 60 years. She wanted exposure to the arts for everyone and she was dedicated to the protection of local natural resources. She was preceded in death by her husband Willard Andrew Litzenberger MD and her parents Mary and Arthur Hillman. Survivors include a daughter, Sue Gillis and husband Doug, of Troutman, NC; three sons, Drew Litzenberger and wife Virginia, of Asheville, NC, John Litzenberger and wife Anna, of Zurich, Switzerland, and Peter Kaukars and wife Heide, of Frankfurt, Germany; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. The memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, October 17, 2011 at Christ Episcopal Church in Elizabethtown, followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Christ Episcopal Church or North Central Education Foundation.
