Michael Thomas Smith
Michael Thomas Smith, 34, of Elkhorn, Ky., died on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, in New Orleans, La., after a sudden illness.
He was the son of Scotty Smith of Elkhorn and Linda Morris Smith of Liberty, and was a member of the Church of God.
Besides his parents, Smith is survived by one brother and two sisters, Scotty Smith Jr. of Elkhorn, Tammy Carter of Liberty, and Kim Watson of Campbellsville; grandmother, Betty Morris of Liberty; two nephews, Dakota Smith and Corey Watson; two step-nephews, Billy Carter and Ira Stayton; and five great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral was at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14 at Lyon-DeWitt Funeral Home in Campbellsville. Burial was in Gaddis Cemetery. The Rev. Jessie Rogers officiated.
Pallbearers were Terry Thorpe, Wes Mann, Robert Clements, Mark Flinchum, Randy Thompson and Robbie Hughes.
Honorary pallbearers were Paul Gabehart, Jack Thompson, James "Buddy" Johnson and Steve Ellis.
Mary Kathryn Chappel
Mary Kathryn Chappel, 81, of Bowman Street in Campbellsville, Ky., died on Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at Taylor County Hospital in Campbellsville, after an illness.
Daughter of the late William Albert Reed and Sara Frances Marshall Reed of Illinois, she was a member of East Campbellsville Church of God and a retired employee of Fruit of the Loom.
She was married
to James Murrell Chappel, who preceded her in death in 1983.
Survivors include three sons and two daughters, Dean Chappel of Illinois, William Chappel and Terry Chappel, both of Colorado, and Wanda Bishop and Fontella Tucker, both of Campbellsville; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Margie Mooney and Barbara Weaver, both of Illinois.
She was also preceded in death by one sister, Elvira Saunders.
Funeral was at 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 13 at Lyon-DeWitt Funeral Home in Campbellsville. Burial was in Chappel Cemetery. The Rev. Ben Spencer officiated.
Pallbearers were James Chappel, John Chappel, Barry Bishop, Tony Tucker, Trent Tucker, Trevor Tucker and Kevin Chappel.
Estle Barrett
Estle Thomas Barrett, 91, of Whetstone, Ariz., formerly of Adair County, Ky., died on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002 in Arizona after a long illness.
He was the son of the late Lonzo and Pearl Barrett of Adair County, Ky.
Survivors include his wife, Jacqueline J. Barrett of Whetstone, Ariz.; two daughters, Jo Nowak of Indianapolis, Ind., and Pamela Barrett of Hereford, Ariz.; one son, Brian Barrett of Butlerville, Ind.; one grandson, Nikolai Barrett of Hereford, Ariz.; foster children, Chris and Martha Hatten of Lebanon, Ind.; two brothers, Finis Barrett of Russell Springs, Ky., and Earl Barrett of Greenwood, Ind.; and one sister, Marie Brockman of Knightstown, Ind.
He was also preceded in death by one grandson, Damon Barrett; and two brothers, Clarence Barrett and Ola Barrett.
Funeral was at 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 14 at New Hope Separate Baptist Church in Columbia. Burial was in New Hope Cemetery. The Rev. Vitis Bailey, the Rev. Danny Bailey and the Rev. David Coffey officiated.
Pallbearers were Eddie Barrett, Keith Breeding, Doug Gaskins, Kenny Gaskins, Daryl McGaha and Dennis Roberts.
Honorary pallbearers were Dewey Bailey, Tommy Bailey, Nikolais Barrett, Travis Bryant, James Ray Gaskins, Ruben Gaskins, Earl Grant, Edward Hardwick, Aaron Pyles, James Ralph Roberts and Terry Roberts.

Brian James Walker
Brian James Walker, 54, of Knifley, Ky., died on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at his home.
He was the son of Iva Kearney Walker of Phoenix, Ariz., and the late James Manning Walker, and was a member of Columbia-Union Presbyterian Church.
Walker was founder and presently served as chief of the Knifley Area Volunteer Fire Dept. He was a member of the Peace Corps and was an international development counselor, and was a member of Casey Creek Masonic Lodge.
Besides his mother, Walker is survived two sons, Manning Walker and Blake Walker, both of Knifley; two brothers, Reno Walker of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Otis Walker; two sisters, Tary Del Zigler of Mesa, Ariz., and Judith L. Borkowski.
Memorial service was at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15 at Columbia-Union Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Richard Guerrant and the Rev. Dwight Forderhase officiated.
Memorial donations are suggested to Knifley Area Volunteer Fire Dept. or the Janice Holt Giles and Henry Giles Foundation.

Charles Ross
Charles Ross, 97, of Warren Place, Campbellsville, Ky., died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, in Campbellsville.
Son of the late Benjamin Cleveland Ross and Vinnie K. Craig Ross, he was born on May 16, 1905 in Ripley, Ohio, and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Campbellsville.
Ross was a retired claims representative for the Social Security Administration. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army.
He was married
to Mildred Henslee on Dec. 23, 1933, who preceded him in death on June 4, 1996.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Leonard Sowards of Campbellsville; two grandchildren, George Robert Mateyoke and Suzanne Sowards of Lexington; one brother and one sister, Freeman Ross of Lexington, and Blanche Wesley of Louisville.
He was also preceded in death by four brothers, James Ross, Roy Ross, Francis Ross and Glenn Ross.
Funeral was at 1 p.m., Monday, Dec. 16 at Parrott & Ramsey Funeral Home in Campbellsville. Burial was in Brookside Cemetery, with bull military honors by the Marion County Veterans Honor guard. The Rev. John Carroll Coomer officiated.
Pallbearers were Jim Curry, Raymond Tye Faulkner, George Robert Mateyoke, David Alan Newton, Billy Ray Smith and Jimmy Wesley.
Honorary pallbearers were members of Kerr Fellowship Sunday School Class at First United Methodist Church.
Nathan C. Wilkerson
Nathan C. Wilkerson, 82, of Louisville, formerly of Campbellsville, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, in Louisville.
He was a retired load dispatcher supervisor for LG&E.; He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of the Shively Masonic Lodge C #951, Moose Lodge #5, and the Highland American Legion Post.
He was married
to Mildred Caulk, who preceded him in death.
Survivors include one son and one daughter, Tom Wilkerson and Mary Hoagland; six grandchildren; and one sister, Virginia Davis.
Funeral was at 1 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 8 at the W.G. Hardy Funeral Home in Louisville with burial in Brookside Cemetery.
Memorial contributions suggested to the Kentucky Chapter of the American Heart Association.
