Bessie C. Groves, 96
Bessie C. Groves, 96, of Chicago Ill., formerly of Campbellsville, Ky., died on Tuesday, June 1, 2004, after an illness.
Daughter of the late Lee and Stella Bridgewater Smith, she was a retired housewife and a member of First Baptist Church in Campbellsville.
She was married
to Tom Herbert Groves, who preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sons and one step-son, O'dency Johnson Jr. of Lexington, Ky., Forrest King Johnson of Chicago and Harlan Groves of Coburg, Ky.; two daughters and two step-daughters, Annette Branch of Chicago and Caroline Branch, Flora Groves and Ernestine Motley, all of Campbellsville; six grandchildren, Glenn Johnson, Vernon Johnson, O'dency Johnson III, Elizabeth Ann Shaw, Helen Pruitt and Cynthia Ann Pruitt; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was also preceded in death by one grandson, J.W. Johnson; three brothers and one sister, Robert Smith, John Smith, Levi Smith and Mary Lizzie Swiff.
Funeral was on Saturday, June 5 at First Baptist Church. Burial was in the Miller Cemetery.
Bro. David Goatley and Bro. George P. Lee III officiated.
Pallbearers were George Richardson, Fred Wagner, Ricky Groves, Bennie Groves, Stacy Groves and Wallace Atkinson.
Honorary pallbearers were Doug Allen, Barry Allen, Allen Robinson, Ralph Wagner, George Williams and Willie Haskins.
Samuel "Sambo" Keltner, 78
Samuel "Sambo" Keltner, 78, of Columbia, Ky., died on Friday, June 4, 2004, at Westlake Regional Hospital in Columbia after a long illness.
Son of the late Ervin and Cora Whitlock Keltner, he was a member of Cane Valley Baptist Church, a retired farmer and a member of the Green River Feeder Calf Association.
He is survived by his wife, Ethelean Denson Keltner of Columbia; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Carolyn Keltner of Frankfort, Ky., Beverly and Tom Wilkins of Westin, Ontario, and Debbie and Mike Rich of Lexington, Ky.; seven grandchildren, Lindsey Rich, Ashley Rich, Kyle Givens, Andrew Payton, Samuel W. Wilkins, Simon Wilkins and Zachary Wilkins; one brother, Robert Keltner of Columbia; and four sisters, Oreta Morris and Helen Montgomery, both of Columbia, Nancy Cundiff of Campbellsville, Ky., and Clarice Emig of Kalamazoo, Mich.
He was also preceded in death by one son, Samuel Wayne Keltner in 1989.
Funeral was on Monday, June 7 at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home in Columbia. Burial was at Haven Hill Cemetery in Columbia.
Leslie Ray Morris, 81
Leslie Ray Morris, 81, of Hodgenville, Ky., died on Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown, Ky.
Son of the late John L. and Nora Jane Gaddie Morris, he was a member of First Baptist Church of Hodgenville and an Army veteran of World War II.
He owned and operated Ray's Laundry and Dry Cleaners, Ray's Furniture Store in Buffalo and Morris Advertising. He was a charter member and first president of the Sunrise Manor Volunteers, a charter member of Ovesen Heights Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and song leader for many years, and a charter member of the LaRue County Country Club, where he served as president and also operated the pro shop.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice "Neecie" Self Morris; one daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis Ray and Mike Eastridge of Bowling Green, Ky.; one son, Dale M. Morris of Hodgenville; four grandchildren, Michael Ray Gaddie of Bowling Green, Sara Beth Gaddie of Hodgenville, Joshua Morris and Taylor S. Judd, all of Lexington, Ky.; two great-grandchildren, Andrew Gaddie and Jacob Leslie Ray Gaddie; and one brother, John L. Morris Jr. of Louisville.
He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Carroll Lee Morris; and several brothers and sisters.
Funeral was on Thursday, May 13 at Bennett-Bertram Funeral Home in Hodgenville, with the Revs. Steve Sheldon and Louis Humes officiating. Burial was in Buffalo Cemetery.

Brandon Price, 12
Brandon Price, 12, of Sanders Road in Campbellsville, Ky., died on Thursday, June 3, 2004, as a result of a four-wheeler accident.
Son of Nevin Price and Sherri Porter Price, he was born in Taylor County, Ky., on Feb. 17, 1992. He was a member of Muldraugh Hill Baptist Church and a seventh grader at Taylor County Middle School.
He is also survived by one brother, Cole Price of Campbellsville; his grandparents G.W. and Faye Porter of Campbellsville and Hollis and Minnie Hancock of Lebanon, Ky.; one great-grandmother, Elizabeth Burchett of Campbellsville; and several aunts and uncles.
Funeral was on Saturday, June 5 at Muldraugh Hill Baptist Church in Marion County, Ky. The Rev. Vic Stansbury and the Rev. Don Gowin officiated. Burial was at New Market Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jason Benningfield, Dennis Flygstad, Hal Hallmark, Steve Morris, Randall Porter and Doug Taylor.
Thomas Wyatt Smith, 67
Thomas Wyatt Smith, 67, of Danville, Ky., died on Friday, June 4, 2004, at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.
Son of the late Samuel G. and Mary Lee Rice Smith, he was born on May 9, 1937 in Campbellsville, Ky. He was a former president and C.E.O. of Ephraim McDowell Health.
He was named the 2000 Citizen of the Year by the Danville/Boyle County Chamber of Commerce and, in 2001, was given the Distinguished Service Award by the Kentucky Hospital Association.
Smith also served on several boards and committees, including Campbellsville University Board of Trustees and Business and Finance Committees, Several Ephraim McDowell boards, Central Kentucky Cancer Program Board, Hospital Technical Advisory Committee, The Kentucky Hospital Association Board of Directors and the Leadership Kentucky Board of Directors.
He is survived by his wife, Malinda Parker Smith; three sons, Gregory Thomas Smith, Bradley Wyatt Smith and Brentley Parker Smith, all of Louisville, Ky.; two brothers, Paul Edward Smith and Howard Lee Smith, both of Campbellsville, Ky.; one sister, Mabel Louise Petrey of Campbellsville; and seven grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by one sister, Mildred Ruth Smith.
Funeral was on Tuesday, June 8 at Lexington Avenue Baptist Church. The Rev. Tommy Valentine officiated. Burial was in Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Ky.
Pallbearers were Joe Greer, William Peniston, Bernard Montgomery, Quince Arnold, Jim Beck, David Bibb, Charles Gatton and E.R. Purdom.
Honorary pallbearers were Evelyn Guerrant, Rick Nallinger, Rick Kaylor, I.B. Jenkins, Mike Carter, Bill Huston, Richie Lyons and Jeanette Davis.

George H. Sprowles, 79
George H. Sprowles, 79, of Regency Court in Campbellsville, Ky., died on Saturday, June 5, 2004, in Louisville, Ky.
Son of the late Carl Sprowles and Maggie Spurling Sprowles, he was born on July 17, 1924 in Taylor County, Ky.
Sprowles was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946.
He was a recipient of the WWII Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Bronze Star and several other awards.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church and a retired installation and maintenance supervisor at G.T.E.
He was married
to Margaret Walker on Aug. 31, 1946. She preceded him in death on Aug. 2, 1972.
He later married
Francis Russell on Sept. 1, 1973. She survives.
Other survivors include five children and their spouses, Eddie and Vickie Sprowles, Bobby and J.J. Sprowles, Mike and Joyce Russell, Lana and David Helm and Steve and Linda Russell, all of Campbellsville; six grandchildren, Shana Crabtree, Dana Dudgeon, Bridget Cox and Isaac Russell, all of Campbellsville, Brian Helm of Taylorsville, Ky., and Trevor Sprowles, who's in the U.S. Air Force; one great-granddaughter, Molly Crabtree; and one brother-in-law, Richard Sublett.
He was also preceded in death by one sister, Frances Sublett; and one brother, Lewis Carl Sprowles.
Funeral was on Tuesday, June 8 at First United Methodist Church in Campbellsville, Ky. The Rev. James H. Loy officiated. Burial was in Brookside Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Larry Caldwell, Harold Cruse, Melvin Douglas, Wendell Hughes, Jerry Kearney, Jim Sabo, Manuel Sapp and Marshall Whatley.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the Upper Room Sunday School Class and G.T.E. employees.
