Tillie Shofner, 84
Tillie Shofner, 84, of Hodgenville, formerly of New Hope, died Oct. 3, 2006, at Sunrise Manor Nursing Home in Hodgenville.
She was the daughter of the late Jim Tom Jones and Offie Allen Jones and was born June 27, 1922, in Marion County.
She professed faith in Christ and was a member of the Ovesen Heights Missionary Baptist Church.
She united in marriage to Charlie T. Shofner, Jan. 5, 1941. He preceded her in death March 6, 1989.
She was also preceded in death by four sisters, Nellie Morris, Ona Price, Lena Jones and Lottie Wright; and a brother, Billy Joe Jones.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews; and her extended family, Kaye Brown of Elizabethtown.
Funeral services will be held Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. at Parrott and Ramsey Funeral Home in Campbellsville, with the Rev. Craig Perkins officiating. Burial to follow at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.
William Martin Whelan, 65
William Martin Whelan, 65, of Chambersburg, Pa., died Oct. 1, 2006, at his home.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Julie Ann Whelan; his parents, Joe and Alice Whelan; and two brothers, Mike Whelan and Guy Whelan.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; a daughter, Margie Wilson of Harrisburg, Pa., a stepdaughter, Francie Guyton of South Carolina; a stepson, Mike Kneavel of Chambersburg, Pa.; three sisters, Claire Yarber of Maryland, Mary Taylor of Louisville and Rosie Rogers of Georgetown; and six brothers, Don Whelan of Hodgenville, Melvin Whelan and Anthony Whelan of Louisville, Charlie Whelan of Frankfort, John Whelan of West Virginia and Eddie Whelan of Howardstown.
Visitation was held Oct. 5 at Thomas Geisel Funeral Home in Chambersburg, Pa. The body was cremated.
Ruby Brooks, 83
Ruby Brooks, 83, of Hodgenville, died May 2, 2008 at Sunrise Manor Nursing Home in Hodgenville.
She was a homemaker and a member of South Fork Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Brooks; a son, David Brooks; her parents, Ed and Janie Gardner Brown; two sisters, Lillie Robinson and Mary Lee Phillips; and two brothers, William Brown and Walter Brown.
She is survived by a son, Billy Brooks and his wife, Helen of Buffalo; two granddaughters, Janie Brooks of Dry Ridge and Stephanie Brooks of Hodgenville; a grandson, Bobby Brooks and his wife, Sheila of Magnolia; and a brother, James Brown of Hodgenville.
Funeral services were held May 4, at Bennett-Bertram Funeral Home in Hodgenville with the Rev. Gordon McDowell officiating. Burial followed in Hammonsville Cemetery.
Colleen Moss Harper, 51
Colleen Moss Harper, 51, of Hodgenville, died May 2, 2008 at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown.
She was a former employee of Nationwide Uniform and Sunrise Manor Nursing Home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Moss and Mary James McConnell Harper; two sisters, Norma Jean Hutcherson and Betty James VanMeter Nutt; and two brothers, Conrad VanMeter and William McConnell VanMeter.
She is survived by two sisters, Jacqueline Wallace of Munfordville and Melvina Taylor of Boulder, Colo.; her companion, Freddy Carter; her special friends, Katie Carter, Jerry Peace, Robert Peace, Niccole Carter and Kevin Carter; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held May 5, at Bennett-Bertram Funeral Home in Hodgenville with the Revs. Gerald Gardner and Carlton Puryear officiating. Cremation will follow.
George Thomas ‘Joe’ Howell, 62
George Thomas “Joe” Howell, 62, formerly of Ft. Knox, passed away April 29, 2008.
He was born June 8, 1945 in Ft. Knox and graduated from LaRue County High School in 1964 and went to the University of Kentucky and Western Kentucky University. He was in the Army during the Vietnam era and was a Vietnam veteran. He taught vocational school for seven years; owned and operated several businesses in Kentucky before moving to Florida. He retired from logging in 2005 and moved to Arizona. His optimism and uplifting personality and stories will be missed and remembered by all who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his father, Thomas Howell; and an infant daughter, Michelle Howell.
He is survived by his soul mate Karen Yastrzab; his mother, Carolyn Howell; a brother, Steven of Louisville; a sister, Alice Ann Jaggers; two sons, George “Tommy” Thomas Jr., and Matthew (Susan); a daughter, Carolyn Elizabeth Acree of Buffalo; seven grandchildren; a niece; nephews; many cousins; and his dog, Nipper.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Heart Association.
James Larry Abell, 61
James Larry Abell, 61, of Shepherdsville, died June 30, 2008 at Jewish Hospital Medical Center South.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert H. “Bob” Abell.
He is survived by his wife, Lue Abell; a daughter, Clarissa and Daniel Thomas; a stepdaughter, Sonja and Jeff Therrian; grandchildren, Ella Thomas, Ashley and Amanda Therrian; four brothers, Donnie, David, Bobby and Mike; and three sisters, Pat, Beverly and Anita.
Funeral service is July 3, at 11 a.m. at Billy Howell Funeral Chapel in Hodgenville with Brother Gordon McDowell officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Tabor Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be July 2, from 3-8 p.m. at Billy Howell Funeral Chapel in Hodgenville.
Samuel McDaniel Foster, 76
Samuel McDaniel Foster, 76, of New Haven, died June 29, 2008.
He is survived by three daughters; and two sons.
Funeral services were held July 1 at Greenwell-Houghlin Northside Funeral Home Chapel in Bardstown. Burial followed at Highland Memory Gardens in Mt. Washington.
Warren Wilson ‘Sonny’ LaRue, 76
Warren Wilson “Sonny” LaRue, 76, of Raywick, died June 26, 2008.
He is survived by his wife, Cathy Bickett LaRue; six daughters; and four sons.
Private graveside services were held June 27 at LaRue Family Cemetery in Raywick.
Clarence Lewis ‘C.L.’ Payne, 72
Clarence Lewis “C.L.” Payne, 72, of Hodgenville, died June 28, 2008 at his residence.
He was retired from Crucible Steel in Elizabethtown; an employee of Arrowhead Pawn in Hodgenville; and was an avid fisherman.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Bertha Glass Payne; and two sisters, Doris Payne and Betty Rose.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara J. Payne; two daughters, Alice Payne of Elizabethtown and Sue Payne of Hodgenville; a son, Louie Payne and his wife, Melissa of Hodgenville; a sister, Dixie Todd and her husband, Jackie of Sonora; a brother, Rev. Jerry Payne and his wife, Jewell of Tennessee; four grandchildren, James Warren, Daniel Skaggs, Cory Skaggs and Ashley Payne; and two great-granddaughters, Kayleigh Warren and Addison Skaggs.
Funeral services were held June 30, at Bennett-Bertram Funeral Home in Hodgenville with the Revs. Jerry Payne and Richard Binkley officiating. Burial followed in South Fork Cemetery.

Daniel S. Rowe, 37, of Magnolia, died June 22, 2008.
He is survived by his wife, Tammy Berry Rowe; and two sons, Dustin and Austin Rowe.
Funeral services were held June 26 at Dixon-Rogers Funeral Home in Magnolia. Cremation followed.
Ethel Mae Rice Sidebottom, 90
Ethel Mae Rice Sidebottom, 90, of Hodgenville, passed away June 30, 2008 at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown.
She was a housewife and a good Christian woman and faithful member of First Baptist Church of Hodgenville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mobley Sidebottom in 2005; a son, Gary Ray Sidebottom in 1976; her parents, Henry and Laura McCubbin Rice; and a brother, Harold “Lefty” Rice.
She is survived by a granddaughter, Heather Leigh Sidebottom Jones and her husband, Rick of Magnolia; three great-grandchildren, Bradley Dyson, Brandon Dyson and Jake Jones; two sisters, Marie Howell of Louisville and Juanita Lawler and her husband, Carl of Mt. Sherman; a special niece, Diane Osborne and her husband, Larry of Elizabethtown; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held July 3, at 2 p.m. at Bennett-Bertram Funeral Home in Hodgenville with the Rev. Louis Humes officiating. Burial will follow in Red Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be held today from 4-8 p.m. and July 3 after 8 a.m. at the funeral home.
