Celia Nan Creal McDonald of Hodgenville
Celia Nan Creal McDonald was born July 12, 1938, in Louisville, KY, and passed away, Friday, October 10, 2014 at the Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown.
She was a graduate of Hodgenville High School, where she was salutatorian, editor of the annual and the school paper, and a choir soloist. She received a B.A. from Centre College in both Music and English, with awards in both at graduation. There she was a member of the Tudor Singers, Centre Choir, Obiter Scripta and Spanish Club, and was Sweetheart of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dalph Edward Creal and Nancy Jones Cole Creal, and her stepmother, Elsie Atherton Smith Creal, as well as her grandparents, Congressman Edward Wester Creal and Alice Crady Creal, and David Elber and Georgia Ermine Cole.
Survivors include her husband, Robert I. McDonald, Jr.; children, Robert I. McDonald III (Sharon) of Columbus, Ohio; Jennifer Nan McDonald of Pippa Passes, Ky.; Heather Sue McDonald of Hodgenville; two grandchildren, Gwendolyn May McDonald and Robert I. McDonald IV, both of Columbus, and a host of friends and loving canine companions Buddy, Pumpkin, Boots, and Jesse.
She was the third member of her immediate family to be editor and publisher of The LaRue County Herald News and always considered journalism the major work of her life. She also was a special project manager for the Danville Advocate Messenger and editor and publisher of the Harlan Daily Enterprise. She enjoyed working at Harlan and Hodgenville with her husband, Bob. The two collaborated on many jobs and creative projects together over the years.
She served as president of the Kentucky Press Association and on its board and remained a member of the Kentucky Journalism Foundation. She was named Most Valuable Member of KPA and for many years produced audio-visual shows for the awards competitions sponsored by that organization. She was president of the Louisville chapters of Women in Communications, Inc., and the International Association of Business Communicators. She played a leadership role in several environmental organizations in Louisville and of organizations dedicated to the advancement of women.
She was very proud to have served on the Kentucky Humanities Council, from whom she had earlier received the Project of the Year Award for her book and audio-visual presentation on Hodgenville poet, Hal Z. Cox. She was named Gannett Fellow in Community Journalism at Colorado State University and spent several weeks there working with students.
She also served as president of the LaRue County Arts Council and the LaRue County Democratic Women's Club, on the Boundary Oak Committee for Lincoln's Birthplace, and in other civic organizations in Hodgenville, Harlan, and Louisville. She was a past president of the Scottish Terrier Club of Greater Louisville and a founding member of Wee Scots collector's club, now Cincinnati Scottie Friends.
With her husband, she was a long-time member of the Motet Singers of Louisville and was close to many friends who shared that experience, as did her three children. She also was a member of the Louisville Orchestra's Masterworks Chorale.
Her employment also included The Courier-Journal, Kentucky Central Life Insurance, the Kentucky Commission on Women, Manager of the Hodgenville Main Street/Renaissance and of the LaRue County Arts Council, the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority, communications director for the Lt. Governor of Kentucky, the Jefferson County Air Pollution Control Board and the Kentucky Lung Association.
She grew up in First Baptist Church in Hodgenville, but spent most of her life as a Presbyterian, most recently in First Presbyterian Church of Elizabethtown. Those who knew her know the things she cared most about included dogs and animal welfare; music; books; writing poems; stories; features and other materials; the arts, and her family.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church in Elizabethtown with Rev. Skip Dunford officiating.
Visitation will be 5-8 PM Tuesday at Bennett-Bertram Funeral Home in Hodgenville, and after 1 PM Wednesday at the church until time for services.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Scottish Terrier Club of Greater Louisville, Scottie Rescue or Best Friends Animal Society, or to the Kentucky Humanities Council, Centre College or the LaRue County Public Library.
Margaret Ida Robertson of Buffalo
Margaret Ida Robertson, age 83, of Buffalo, passed away Sunday, Oct. 12, 2014, at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown.
She was a member of New Fellowship Baptist Church in Elizabethtown.
She is preceded in death by a son, Dale Robertson; a sister Mary Chelf; an infant brother and a great- granddaughter, Nataliya Warfield.
She is survived by two daughters, Sherri Robertson of Hodgenville and Terri Robertson of Greensburg; an adopted daughter, Ann Miller of Hodgenville; three brothers, Joseph Munday of Taylorsville, Eugene Munday of Indiana, and William Munday of Virginia; two sisters, Marcus Faulkner and Zora Tharp both of Louisville; two grandsons, Justin and Joshua Bostic; two granddaughters, Jessica Smith and Lauren Warfield and a great-grandson, Chayden Smith.
The Funeral is at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2014, at Bennett-Bertram Funeral Home in Hodgenville with the Rev. Elmer Varnadore officiating. Burial follows in the South Fork Cemetery.
Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and continues after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Benny Bale of Elizabethtown, formerly of Hodgenville
Benny W. Bale, age 82, of Elizabethtown, formerly of Hodgenville, passed away Thursday, October 16, 2014 at his residence.
Born December 5, 193l, in Lobb, Green County, he was the son of the late Guy Bale and Cora Whitlow Bale. A 38 year member of B. R. Young Lodge #132 F&AM; in Hodgenville, he was a lifelong Baptist. He was saved by faith and baptized at the age of sixteen at Aetna Grove Baptist Church in Green County.
He was a retired Master Sgt. for the United States Air Force, serving from 1952 until 1971. Following his time in the service he worked at the American Red Cross as a Data Processing Manager.
His parents; two brothers, Curtis Bale and Earl Bale and his sister, Lillian Bale Johnson, preceded him in death.
For 62 years, he was the beloved husband of Charmaine Bryant Bale formerly of Horse Cave, Kentucky. They were married
on December 24, 1952, in Jeffersonville, Indiana.
He is also survived by three daughters, Teresa Korsgaard and her husband Dan of Richmond, Tammy Shoffner and her husband Bobby of Hodgenville and Laura Vuleta and her husband Dan of Elizabethtown; a son, Michael Bale and his wife Mary Beth of Moline, Illinois; six grandchildren, Tiffany Shoffner Merriman (Travis), Melissa Gaddie, Bradley Shoffner (Eric Withers), Stefanie Vuleta, Emily Vuleta and Daniel Vuleta and two great-grandchildren, Ryleigh and Cameron Merriman.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Monday, October 20, at the Bennett-Bertram Funeral Home in Hodgenville with Bro. Shannon McCubbins officiating. Burial will follow in Aetna Grove Baptist Church Cemetery near Summersville.
Visitation will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 PM Sunday and after 9 AM, Monday at the funeral home.
Betty Sims of Louisville, formerly of Hodgenville
Betty Sue Steedley Sims, age 74, of Louisville, formerly of Hodgenville, passed away Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at the Highland Health and Rehabilitation with her husband by her side.
She was born February 3, 1940 in Tampa, Florida. Betty was a loving wife, mother, and sister who loved to cook, bake, and travel across the United States with her husband.
Betty is survived by her husband of 25 years, Wilson Sims, six children, eleven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and one brother.
Betty loved flowers and especially enjoyed tending to her beautiful mums she carefully planted around her home.
Graveside services will be held at 1 PM, Tuesday, October 21, 2014, at the Red Hill Cemetery in Hodgenville.
Visitation will be after 12 noon, Tuesday at the Bennett-Bertram Funeral Home in Hodgenville.
Kathleen Brown Enlow of Hodgenville
Kathleen Brown Enlow, age 83, of Hodgenville, passed away, Thursday, October 23, 2014, at the Sunrise Manor Nursing Home in Hodgenville.
She was a member of the Hodgenville United Methodist Church where she served as organist for forty-five years and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lewis Enlow, Sr.; an infant son, James Henry Enlow; her parents, James Presley and Ethel May Ragland Brown; two sisters, Geneva Gentry and Mickey Turner and a brother, J.C. Brown.
She is survived by two daughters, Cindy (Mike) Zeller of Lexington and Kay Enlow of Hodgenville; a son R.L. (B.J.) Enlow, Jr. of Hodgenville and four grandchildren, Michael Zeller, Jacob (Meredith) Zeller, Sierra Enlow and Holly Enlow; a great-granddaughter, Emerson Faye Zeller and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM, Sunday, October 26, 2014, at the Bennett-Bertram Funeral Home in Hodgenville with Rev. Roger Newell officiating. Burial will follow in the Red Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 6 PM, Saturday and after 9 AM, Sunday at the funeral home.
E. Claudine McCugh of Hodgenville
Evelyn Claudine McCugh, age 96 years, of Hodgenville, passed away, Sunday, October 26, 2014 at the Sunrise Manor Nursing Home in Hodgenville.
She was a retired beautician, charter member of Parkway Baptist Church, co-founder of the Golden Age Club, and former co-owner of Mac's Carpet Store in Hodgenville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie E. McCugh, a daughter, Donna Gayle Wyatt, her parents, Luke S. and Edith Conner Avery, and a brother.
She is survived by a daughter, Doris K. McCugh of Hodgenville, a son-in-law, Michael L. Wyatt of Hodgenville, four grandchildren, Tara (Mark) Bratcher of Caneyville, Lauren (Randy) Benzie of Montgomery, Illinois, Melinda (James) Parker of Hodgenville, and Bret (Saatcha) Waska of Denver, three sisters, Delta Fulks of Elizabethtown, Willela (Edward) Copelin of White Mills, and Jennie Patterson of Upton, and 10 great-grandchildren, Ryan Benzie, Justin Massie, Ian Benzie, Cameran Benzie, Payton Benzie, Mark Bratcher, Jr., Quentin Bratcher, Aaron Bratcher, Allison Massie, and Lauren Parker.
Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 PM Thursday, October 30, 2014 at the Bennett-Bertram Funeral Home in Hodgenville with Bro. DeWayne Gibson officiating. Burial will follow in the Upton Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 10 AM Thursday at the funeral home until time for services.
