Alice W. Pope
Alice W. Pope, a resident of Edgemont Manor, Cynthiana, died Monday, Dec. 15, 2003.
She was born Aug. 24, 1902 in Harrison County, Ky., a daughter of the late Harry F. and Anna Mae Jennings Wiglesworth. She was a member of Mt. Hope United Methodist Church, and a former employee of Harrison County having worked as the Deputy Tax Commissioner for 18 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Pope, a brother, Charles Wiglesworth, and a sister, Lillie McLoney.
Survivors include: a special friend, Billy Johnson; cousins, Ophelia Ross and Hattie McKee, both of Cynthiana, and Lucille Johnson of Arizona; and several great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 18 at 2 p.m. at Drake-Whaley-McCarty Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Battle Grove Cemetery. Friends may call after noon at the funeral home. Memorials to Mt. Hope United Methodist Church.
Pallbearers are: Marvin and Gary Ross, Charles Cooper Jennings, Kenny Ross, Jimmy McKee, and Dr. William Frank McKemie.
William P. Matthews, 93
William P. Matthews, 93, a resident of Edgemont Manor, Cynthiana, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, at Edgemont Manor.
He was born in Harrison County on Oct. 28, 1910, to the late Jerry and Blanche Matthews. He was a retired janitor, a World War II U.S. Army veteran, and a member of St. James A.M.E. Church.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Stone, and three brothers, Harvey Matthews, Charles Matthews, and James W. Matthews.
Survivors include: his wife, Dorothy Perrin Matthews of Cynthiana; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, Dec. 15 at St. James A.M.E. Church by the Rev. Fonseco Frazier under the direction of Ware Funeral Home. Burial was in Cherry Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. James A.M.E. Church or Girls and Boys Town, 200 Flanagan Boulevard, Boys Town, Neb. 68010-9988.
Pallbearers were: Don Adair, Don Cummins, Kent Glenn, Derrick Conner, Blaine Cummins, and Brian Perrin. Honorary pallbearers were: Ben Williams and Billy Cummins.
Jeanne Marie McKowne McCracken, 43
Jeanne Marie McKowne McCracken, 43, a resident of Paris, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2003 at St. Joseph Hospital Hospice Care Center in Lexington.
She was born April 23, 1960, in Melbourne, Fla., a daughter of Linda Ann Stalter McKowne and the late Edward Arthur McKowne. She was a dispatcher for Central Communications in Paris-Bourbon County, a former citation officer for Paris, a veteran of the Air Force Air National Guard, a member of Paris First United Methodist Church, and a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club. She was active in the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, and a graduate of Satellite Beach High School in Florida.
Survivors include: her mother; her son, Lucas McCracken of Paris; a sister, Michelle McCarthy of Marion; a niece, Erin McKowne of Marion; a nephew, Shawne Kleist of Reno, Nev.; a great-niece, Meriaha Bradshaw of Marion; and a great-nephew, Mikey Buckner of Marion.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Faith Sierra McKowne and Meriaha Shannon McKowne.
Memorial services were conducted Saturday, Dec. 13 at the Legion Hall in Paris by the Rev. Chris Patterson. An Irish Wake to followed the service.
Lusk-McFarland Funeral Home in Paris was in charge of arrangements.
Alice Cook Ratliff, 85
Alice Cook Ratliff, 85, a resident of Cynthiana, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003 at Grand Haven Nursing Home.
She was born Dec. 3, 1918 in Harrison County, Ky., a daughter of the late Charlie and Elizabeth Jones Cook. She was a homemaker, farmer, and a member of the Presbyterian Church.
Her husband, Joseph Athie Ratliff, a daughter, JoAnn Adams, and a grandson, David Christopher Adams, preceded her in death.
Survivors include: her daughter, Betty Ballard, brother, Joe David Cook, and a sister, Clara Garrison, all of Harrison County; four grandchildren, Jay Scott Ballard, Alisa Adams, Darryl Adams, and Joe Michael Adams; and a great-grandson, Dalton Ballard.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Dec. 6 at Drake-Whaley-McCarty Funeral Home by Bro. Joe Davis Cook. Burial was in Battle Grove Cemetery.
Ina Elizabeth Donaldson Cooper, 75
Ina Elizabeth Donaldson Cooper, 75, a resident of Mt. Olivet, Ky., died Monday, Dec. 8, 2003 at her residence.
She was born in Robertson County, Sept. 25, 1928, to the late James Frank and Sadie White Donaldson. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include: her husband, Donald Lee Cooper; three sons, Donald Phil Cooper, Derrick M. Cooper, and Dewey E. Cooper, all of Robertson County; a sister, Stella Merrell of Brooksville; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 11 at 2 p.m. at Robertson County Funeral Home by Bro. Bob Cannon. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Germantown.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Hope in Maysville.
John Charles Wesley Hinton, 77
John Charles Wesley Hinton, 77, a resident of Falmouth, Ky., died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003 at the St. Luke Hospital East in Ft. Thomas, Ky.
He was born in Hardinsburg, Ky., June 15, 1927, a son of the late Rev. William A. and Florence Williams Hinton. He was a member of the former Allen Chapel United Methodist Church in Falmouth, owned the former Supreme Radio and TV in Falmouth, retiring in 1977 after 25 years, he then went to work for Square D. Company in Florence for 15 years.
He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph McRae Hinton on Dec. 5, 1986.
Survivors include: his wife, C. Juanita Pharris Hinton; two daughters, Jacqueline Hinton-Cravanas of Knoxville, Tenn., and Billie Jean Stout of Batavia, Ohio; a son, John Anthony Hinton of Easton., Penn.; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 13 at 1 p.m. at Woodhead Funeral Home in Falmouth. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Falmouth. Visitation will be Friday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
John Thomas Whalen, 72
John Thomas Whalen, 72, a resident of Harrison County, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003 at Harrison Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Harrison County, Ky., a son of the late John and Bertha Fryman Whalen. He was a retired steel factory worker, and an Army veteran.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Whalen; two sons, Odis and John Whalen, a daughter, Janet Whalen, three brothers, and two sisters.
Survivors include: his sister, Mrs. Charles (Emma) Garrison of Cynthiana; and brother, Gilbert Whalen of Dry Ridge.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Dec. 10 at Drake-Whaley-McCarty Funeral Home by the Rev. Paul Hines. Burial was in Battle Grove Cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Roger Gasser, David Garrison, Charles Garrison Jr., Melvin Whalen, Timmy Dale Whalen, Steve Whalen, Robert Bradley Hatfield, and Barry Jackson.
Honorary pallbearers were: Kenny Henson, Chris Whalen, William Whalen, and Orville Whalen.
