Eugene E. "Gene" Travers Sr.
Eugene E. "Gene" Travers Sr., 72, Henderson, died at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at Methodist Hospital.
He was a member of First Christian Church. A Kentucky Colonel, he was also the former owner and operator of the Filling Station Lounge and Restaurant and the Bridge View Inn.
Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Jeannine Travers; three sons, Gene Travers Jr. of Milford, Ohio, Kim Travers of Newburgh, and Steve Travers of Henderson; two stepsons, Jeff Buckley of Mount Sterling, Ky., and Jay Bulkley of Winchester, Ky.; three sisters, Connie Barker of Lebanon, Tenn., and Marilyn Pindel and Rendy Hopper, both of Memphis; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Rudy-Rowland Funeral Home. The Rev. John Conn will officiate. Entombment will be in Fernwood Cemetery Mausoleum.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today and until service time Friday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Buckley, Jay Bulkley, Gene Travers Jr., Larry Barker, Chip McKinnies, and Arthur Stierley.
Frank L. Thornberry Jr.
POOLE -- Frank L. Thornberry Jr., 75, Poole, died at 8:07 a.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville.
He was a member of Poole Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Georgia Thornberry; one daughter, Jennifer Baney of Lexington; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Tapp Funeral Home. The Rev. Rob Whitacre will officiate. Burial will be in Shady Grove Cemetery in Poole.

Joann Sandefur
Joann Sandefur, 54, Corydon, died of cancer at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at her home.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Henderson, The Garden Club, Christian Women's Club, Henderson County Homemakers, and Green Valley Baptist Disaster Relief Team.
Survivors include her husband of 34 years, David Sandefur; two sons, Timothy David Sandefur and Brian Christopher Sandefur, both of Corydon; one sister, Gladys French of Morganfield; and two brothers, David Sartain of Bluff City and Dan Sartain of Roseville, Mich.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Henderson. The Rev. Bill Patterson will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery in Reed.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Benton-Glunt Funeral Home and after 10 a.m. Friday at the church.

George P. Demeter
OWENSBORO -- George P. Demeter, 79, Owensboro, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at Owensboro Mercy Health System.
He was retired from Alcoa Aluminum Co. after 21 years. He had attended Walnut Memorial Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, and a member of United Steel Workers Association Local No. 104. He also taught Hungarian refugees English in 1957 at Brescia College. He was a Kentucky Colonel.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth M. Schroader Demeter, who died April 12, 2000.
Survivors include three daughters, Darlene Rowe of Henderson, and Stacy Frey and Donna Demeter, both of Owensboro; one son, Michael Demeter of Owensboro; one sister, Helen Bennett of Paintsville, Ohio; two brothers, Paul Demeter of Jonesboro, Texas, and Andy Demeter of Okeechobee, Fla.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Glenn Funeral Home Chapel in Owensboro. The Rev. Jerry Emberton will officiate. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery in Owensboro.

Johanna W. Griffin
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Johanna W. Griffin, 102, Albuquerque, formerly of Henderson, died at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at Presbyterian Hospital here.
She was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Henderson and attended Faith Lutheran Church in Albuquerque. She was also a member and past president of Henderson Business and Professional Women, was state chairman for Civil Defense, and owned and operated Princess Beauty and Slimming Studio in Henderson. She was a Kentucky Colonel.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dade Griffin, who died in 1978.
Survivors include one daughter, Joyce Bauer of Albuquerque; nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Rev. Dennis E. Ouellette will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
There will be no visitation.

Anthony Wayne Fortner
Anthony Wayne Fortner, 30, Henderson, formerly of Eminence, Ky., died in a work-related accident Friday, April 27, 2001, in Conneaut, Ohio.
He was an employee with Nationwide Tower Company in Henderson.
Survivors include his fiancee, Connie Burke of Henderson; one daughter, Christine Fortner of Eminence; his parents, Julius Clayton Fortner and Phyllis J. Stivers Fortner of Eminence; three brothers, David Fortner of LaGrange, Ky., Michael Fortner of Waddy, Ky., and Kenneth Fortner of Eminence; one half-sister, Terri Kays of Shelbyville; and two half-brothers, Billy Readen of Lockport, Ky., and Franklin Readen of Shelbyville.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Prewitt New Castle Funeral Home in New Castle, Ky. The Rev. Kenny Talbott will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasureville Cemetery.

David Waide Snelling
David Waide Snelling, 58, Henderson, formerly of Evansville, died of cancer Sunday, April 29, 2001, at his home here.
He was retired from Alcoa's Labor Relations Department and as the manager of human resources for the Visiting Nurse Association. He was a 1960 graduate of Evansville Memorial High School and a graduate of the University of Southern Indiana. He was also a U.S. Air Force veteran. He enjoyed golf, travel, and history.
Survivors include his wife, Jackita Snelling; one daughter, Carla Pettus of Evansville; one stepdaughter, Kelly Haile of Louisville; one stepson, Rich Neill of Henderson; his parents, George C. "Jock" and Theda Snelling of Evansville; two sisters, Barbara Amiano of Boonville, Ind., and Carol Hudson of Haubstadt, Ind.; two brothers, George Snelling of Mount Vernon, Ind., and Michael Snelling of Scott Depot, W.Va.; one grandson; two step grandsons; nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel in Evansville. The Rev. Ted Tempel will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Evansville.
