Roberta Geraldine Slusher, 71, Baxter, died Jan. 30, 2005, at Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.
She was born Aug. 10, 1933, in Harlan. She was a 1953 graduate of Hall High School.
She was an active member of the Harlan Women's Club, past garden clubs and she belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 297, where she was a Worthy Matron twice and where she has always been an officer. She was very active in civic affairs. She was the first woman to be elected president of the Harlan Kiwanis Club, where she served from 1994 to 1995. She was also a Kentucky Colonel commissioned by Gov. Bereton Jones. She was a member of Wesley Evangelical Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Nan Booth Starrett; her husband, Denville E. Slusher; a daughter, Karen Johnson; a brother, JT Starrett; and a sister, Mauline Starrett.
Survivors include two children: James Edward Slusher, Harlan; and Denville Maurice Slusher, Berea; three sisters: Helen Sowders, Cawood; Arizona Fields, Cawood; and Christine Berry, Orange Grove, Calif.; and a host of nieces, nephews, masons and Eastern Star sisters and brothers.
Visitation is Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. with Eastern Star services at 8 p.m. in the chapel of Mount Pleasant Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Wayne Curry officiating.
Burial will follow in the Resthaven Cemetery of Keith.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Former community leader Ernest H. Smith has died following an extended illness.
Smith, prominent civic leader, visionary and native Harlan Countian, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at his home on Green Terrace.
He was 89 years old.
He was the son of the late Dr. D. H. Smith and wife, Ethel Green Smith.
Smith graduated from Harlan High School in the class of 1933 and also attended the University of Kentucky. He worked for General Electric before becoming general manager of Sue Yarbrough Smith Dance Studios and at the same time, he also owned and managed mining and rental properties.
His community leadership was considerable. He served as president of the Harlan County Chamber of Commerce for eight years, served as a city councilman and was president of the local Kiwanis Club, where he was also elected to serve as district governor for the Kentucky-Tennessee area. While working with the chamber of commerce, he was instrumental in securing the building of the Guthrie Airport, Martin's Fork Lake and UK Southeast Community College.
He was a member of the Harlan United Methodist Church, where he served on numerous committees and was, for a time, Sunday school superintendent.
Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Sue Yarbrough Smith and several brothers.
He is survived by four daughters: Sandra Smith Miller, Harlan; Linda Abner, and husband, Darryl, Stanton; Kay Smith and Clay Smith, Danville; a granddaughter, Dana Abner Yin and husband Dr. James Yin, Beverly Hills, Calif..; his sisters, Margarette Kinser and husband, Marion, Sun City, Ariz., and Charlsie Coffey, Chicopee, Mass.; and several other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted in the chapel of the Anderson & Laws Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. Robert Landis officiating.
Private interment will be the following day at Resthaven Cemetery at Keith.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to one's favorite charity in memory of Smith.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Anderson & Laws Funeral Home, Harlan.
Gerald Bruce Smith

Gerald Bruce Smith, 75, Cumberland, died Jan. 24, 2005, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.
He was born July 5, 1929. He was a veteran of the Army and served in the Korean Conflict. He worked at Creech Lumber and Hardware for 24 years before retiring from Arch of Kentucky after 20 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, J.P. and Ora Dixon Smith; a brother, Lester Smith; and a sister, Bess Hall.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Jenny Smith; sons and daughters: Nancy Shepherd and husband, Lonnie, Cumberland; Gerald Smith and wife, Rita, Whitesburg; David Smith and wife, Robin, Lawtey, Fla.; and Melissa Allen and fiance Lonnie Lowe, Lynch; eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren; four sisters: Bonnie Kessinger, Valley Station; Dorothy Taylor, Shepherdsville; Janis Muller, Las Vegas, Nev.; and Mary Day, Cumberland.
Visitation is today from 6 to 9 p.m. at Day & Jones Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dillard Stanley and the Rev. Michael Blair officiating.
Burial will follow in the Dixon Cemetery.
Pallbearers will include Billy Darrell Fields, Stan Fields, Marcus Johnson, Lonnie Shepherd, Robert Hall, Lonie Lowe and Jerry Dixon.

Margaret Smith, 63, Knoxville, died Jan. 29, 2005.
A native of Lee County, Va., she was a graduate of Lincoln Memorial University and a retired teacher from Evarts High School with 27 years of service. She was a member of the Evarts Baptist Church, the Congregational United Methodist Church, the Sevier Heights Baptist Church in Knoxville and a member of the American Family Association.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William (Bill) Smith; and her parents, Joe and Ethel Seal Moore.
Survivors include a daughter, Melissa Caraway and husband, William (Bill) Jr., Clarksville, Tenn.; a granddaughter, Jenna Caraway; a brother, Clarence (Bud) Moore and wife, Glenda, Jonesville, Va.; five nephews: Jeff, Bryan and Joe Moore, all of Jonesville; and Jeff and Zanc Sturgill, Wise, Va.; and three nieces: Vonda and Tosha Sturgill, Wise; and Melissa Collins Moore, Jonesville.
Visitation is today from 6 to 8 p.m. in Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel of Berry Funeral Home in Knoxville.
Funeral services will be conducted today at 8 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Charlie McNutt officiating.
Burial will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Moore Family Cemetery in Jonesville.

Ray Thomas, 68, Cawood, died Feb. 2, 2005, after a long illness.
A native of Harlan County, he was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and a retired coal miner. He served as chairman of deacons at Putney Missionary Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Aron Thomas and Ellen Allen Thomas; six sisters: Joannie Thomas Noe, Nannie Thomas North, Betty Thomas Denny, Glady Thomas Crase, Delora Thomas Dotson and Frankie Austin Garrett; and three brothers: James Thomas, Ben Thomas and George Thomas.

Ronnie Bryant Woodsby, 28, Harlan, died Jan. 22, 2005, at Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital.
A native of Harlan, he attended the Teetersville Church of God.
Survivors include his mother, Carolyn Woodsby, Harlan; one brother, Donnie Woodsby, Harlan; and four nieces: Meghan Woodsby, Whitney Woodsby, Paige Woodsby and Jaiden Woodsby.
Visitation is Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Teetersville Church of God.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Teetersville Church of God with the Rev. Larry Branson officiating.
Burial will follow in Resthaven Cemetery.

Everette 'Nut' Wright, 68, New Tazewell, Tenn., died Feb. 1, 2005, at St. Mary's Hospital in Knoxville, Tenn.
Born April 19, 1936, in Harlan, Wright was a member of Head of Barren Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Okie Wright; his stepmother, Norma Wright; a brother, Tommy Wright; his grandparents, Charles and Emma Wright and Benjamin and Othella Jones; and a nephew, Raymond Blaine Wright.
Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Charlotte Lynch Wright, New Tazewell, Tenn.; a daughter, Missy Wright, New Tazewell, Tenn.; a brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Elaine Wright, Harlan; a sister, Frances Wright Meadors, Harlan; a sister and brother in law, 'Tiny' and Coy Mink, Knoxville, Tenn.; a special niece, Danielle Johnston; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation is today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Claiborne Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in the Claiborne Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Robert Simmons, the Rev. Eddie Overholt and the Rev. Jack Day officiating.
Burial will follow in Irish Memorial Gardens.
