Lana Turner Hawkins, 44, Big Laurel, died Jan. 20, 2005, at Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital.
A native of Harlan County, she was a member of Cedar Chapel United Brethren in Christ at Greasy Creek.
She was employed by the Harlan Independent School System as an alternative teacher. She was a former employee of T.L. Bayne, a graduate of Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College, former chairperson of the Harlan County Republican Party and a host parent for a foreign exchange student. The most important accomplishment and number one joy was being a loving mother and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her father, Ransom Stanley Turner; her paternal grandparents, Harmon and Ollie Turner; maternal grandparents, Henry 'Bud' and Della Shepherd; and a special brother-in-law, Andy Hawkins.
Survivors include her husband, James Robert Hawkins, Big Laurel; a daughter, Melody Nicole Hawkins Jackson and husband, Jeremy, Hazard; a son, Robert 'Robbie' Andrew Hawkins and wife, Monica, Harlan; a grandson, Hayden Andrew Hawkins; a grandson to be born in February; her mother, Myrtle Shepherd Turner, Big Laurel; two sisters: Ann Epperson and Abby Gail Turner, both of Big Laurel; a brother, Randy Turner, Big Laurel; two nieces: Sarah Epperson and Megan Epperson, both of Big Laurel; a best friend, Shirley Baker, Harlan; a foreign exchange student whom she loved as a son, Andrew Larsen; and a host of other family and friends.
Visitation will be today and Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Kenneth Smith officiating.
Burial will follow in Big Laurel Cemetery.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Mount Pleasant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Irene Perkins Helton
Evarts
January 26, 2005
Irene Perkins Helton, 82, Evarts, died Jan. 26, 2005, at Pineville Community Hospital.
A native of Harlan County, she was a former waitress for Ackley's Cafe in Harlan and a member of Evarts Church of God of Prophecy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hobert Helton; her mother, Relda Johns Perkins; her father, Joe Perkins; and a sister, Laura Farmer.
Survivors include her daughter, Judy K. Hensley and husband, Philip, Middlesboro; one brother, Lawrence Perkins, Dayhoit; three grandchildren: Pvt. Phillip Jason Hensley and wife, Rebecca, Middlesboro; Christina Hendrickson and husband, Jason, Middlesboro; and Sgt. Michael Hensley and wife Amanda, Washington; and a host of other family and friends.
Visitation will be held today from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Evarts Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at Evarts Church of God of Prophecy with the Rev. Glenn Hayes and the Rev. Allen Lord officiating.
Burial will follow at Evarts Memorial Gardens.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Evarts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Brenda Kay Simpson Hobbs
Loyall
January 17, 2005
Brenda Kay Simpson Hobbs, 50, Loyall, died Jan. 17, 2005, at Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Harlan County. She was a homemaker and believed in the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her father, Thurman Simpson Sr.
She is survived by her husband of 25 years, David Wendell Hobbs, Loyall; three children: Charles David Hobbs, Margaret Kathleen Hobbs and Matthew Benjamin Hobbs, all of Loyall; her mother, Kathleen Cornett Simpson, Watts Creek; two sisters: Carolyn Simpson Brittain, Hamilton; and Sharri Simpson, Watts Creek; and one brother, Thurman Simpson Jr., Watts Creek. Also surviving are four nephews and three nieces and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
Visitation is today from 6 to 8 p.m. in the chapel of Loyall Funeral Home.
Graveside services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Cornett Family Cemetery in Watts Creek with the Rev. Gary Simpson officiating.
Loyall Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Abner Jones
Scottsburg, Indiana
January 31, 2005
Abner Jones, 83, Scottsburg, Ind., died Jan. 31, 2005, at Scott Memorial Hospital.
A native of Harlan County, he was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, a former coal miner and believed in the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fielden and Minty Blevins Jones.
Survivors include a brother, Elijah Jones, Scottsburg.
Visitation is today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Collins Funeral Home in Scottsburg.
Funeral services will be conducted today at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with the Bishop Sonny Fugate officiating.
Burial will follow in Lexington Cemetery in Lexington, Ind.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Harlan
January 21, 2005
Geraldine Jones, 70, Harlan, died Jan. 21, 2005, at the Johnson City Medical Center following an illness.
A native of Harlan, she was a member and pianist at Mount Olive Baptist Church. She worked as a homemaker and was active at the Harlan Senior Citizens Center as well as other community organizations.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Greer; her parents, Roosevelt and Florence Jones Garner; a daughter, Lois Kennedy Hollingsworth; three sons: John Greer, Michael Greer and Jackie Greer; four brothers: Billy Jones, Clarence Jones, Charles 'Toots' Jones and Roosevelt Jones; and an adopted child, Doris McMillian.
Survivors include four sons: William Greer and wife, Michelle, Harlan; Gary Greer and wife Vicki, Harlan; Kelvin Greer and Jackie Yellman, Lexington; and Steve Greer and wife, Pamela, Lexington; adopted children: Benny Patton and wife, Paula, Harlan; Joe Davenport and wife, Lynn, Lexington; Michael Myers, Wallins; and Devora Henry, Harlan; eight grandchildren: Brian Jones and wife, Gloria, California; Yolanda Harriston; Scott Adams, Harlan; Gary Greer Jr., Middlesboro; Summer Nicole Greer, Harlan; William Greer Jr., Harlan; Jennifer Greer, Harlan; and James Lewis, Harlan; four great-grandchildren: Ai-Ana Harriston, Donisha Harriston, Aaliyah Lewis and Whitney Davenport; a special niece, Linda Jones, Ohio; a host of nieces and nephews, including Clarence Jones Jr., Charles Jones, Napoleon Jones, Lisa Jones, Triann Jones, Lynn Jones and Bobby Jones; and three special friends: Alberta Toles, Anna Fitzgerald and Australia Rhodes.
Visitation is Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Mount Olive Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Thomas Cook officiating.
Burial will follow in Resthaven Cemetery.

Harrison C. McKeehan Jr.
Rosspoint
January 28, 2005
Harrison C. McKeehan Jr., 71, Rosspoint, died Jan. 28, 2005, at Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital following an illness.
A native of Yancey, he was retired from General Motors in Dayton, Ohio, where he lived for many years prior to moving back to Harlan to be with his older siblings and family. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in the Korean Conflict, and he was a member of the Harlan VFW.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harrison C. and Martha Harp McKeehan; a brother, William J. McKeehan; his sisters: Sarah Madlene Farmer, Betty Jane Powers and Brenda Faye Alvey.
Survivors include his daughter, Sherry Lynn Funk and grandsons Daniel Wayne and Brian Matthew Funk, all of Englewood, Ohio; his brothers: James O. McKeehan and wife, Lillias, Frankfort; O.C. McKeehan and wife, Judith, Oklahoma City, Okla.; his sisters: Mary Mac Watts and husband, Bill, Romeoville, Ill.; and Priscilla Ann McKeehan-Besel and husband, Ron, Indianapolis, Ind.; brothers-in-law: Leonard Powers and the Rev. Howard Farmer, both of Harlan; sister-in-law, Shirley McKeehan, Harlan; several nieces, nephews and special friends, Tony and Elizabeth Bradshaw.
Visitation is Monday from 6 p.m. 8 p.m. at Anderson & Laws Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Howard Farmer and the Rev. Robert Keith officiating.
Burial will follow in the Resthaven Cemetery at Keith.
Full military honors will be provided by the Harlan Honor Guard.

The Rev. Bill Miller Sr., 74, Fresh Meadows, died Jan. 20, 2005, at Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital.
He was a minister for Harlan United Pentecostal Church of God for over 30 years, a 1948 graduate of Hall High School, a U.S. Air Force Korean War Veteran, a 1955 graduate of the Kentucky School of Embalming, a 45-year member of United Commercial Travelers and a Harlan County funeral director and embalmer for over 50 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar L. and Susie Ivy Miller; and two brothers: O.J. Miller and Edgar Miller, Jr.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Helton Miller, Fresh Meadows; four children: Tonya Melinda Miller, Berea; Bill Miller II and wife, Jeannie, Harlan; Shawn Miller and wife, Kim, Fresh Meadows; and Mark Shane Miller, Fresh Meadows; a brother, Eldon Miller and wife, Phyllis, Verda; two sisters: Betty Tipton, Cochaton, Ohio; and Jackie Mayfield, Baxter; and five grandchildren: Colton Miller, Austin Miller, Brendan Miller, Cheyenne Biggs and Lacy Biggs.
Visitation is Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Rich Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. G.L. Vittitow, the Rev. Robert Fox and the Rev. Robert Landis officiating.
Burial will follow in Resthaven Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Garry Lynn Henson Jr., David Johnson, Danny Smallwood, Dale Lusk, Jim Shoemaker, Chris Miller and Mike Forester.
