Josephine Lenore Carpenter Spalding, 77, Pikeville, died Sept. 21, 2004, at her home.
A native of Shasta, Calif., she was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church.
She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Hettie Carpenter; her first husband, Robert Bates; three brothers: Donald Carpenter, Kenneth Carpenter and Davey Carpenter; and a sister, Claudia Lee.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Bates; two sons, Michael Bates, Putney; and Robert Bates Jr., Pikeville; four daughters: Dorothy Brown, Jenkins; Linda Cash, Knoxville Tenn.; Molly Swaim, High Point N.C.; and Dessa Maggard, Partridge; and 10 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Visitation is at Lucas and Hall Funeral Home on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday at noon at the funeral home with the Rev. Steve Knisley officiating.
Burial will follow at Bates Cemetery in Roxanna.

Louis Sullivan, Harlan, died Sept. 21, 2004, in Hopkinsville following a short illness.
Survivors include three children: Donna Gamino and husband, Salvador; Patrick Sullivan; and Kevin Sullivan and wife, Mary Jo; and three grandsons: Salvador Louis Gamino, Seth Sullivan Gamino and Louis Michael Sullivan.
A memorial service was held on Sept. 25 at Emberry Church.
The burial took place in Johnston's Cemetery.

A native of Coalgood, she was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Sherman and Ethel McQueen; one grandson, Paul Wayne Swanson; three brothers: Orville, Walter and James McQueen; and two sisters: Sophie and Ollie McQueen.

Visitation is Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Funeral Home with Pastor Roy Farmer officiating.
Burial will follow in the Swanson Cemetery in Cawood.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

A native of Harlan County, she was a homemaker and a member of the Mary Helen United Methodist Church, Harlan and the Church of Nazarene in Corbin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James Romans and Elizabeth Parsley Romans; her husband, George Edward Vanover; a brother, Drewey Romans; and a sister, Eudell Romans.
Survivors include a son, Charles Edward Vanover, Corbin; three daughters: Vickie Vanover Cook and husband, Gary, Berea; Vera Vanover Spurlock and husband, Wayne, Lily; and Vivian Vanover Faulkner and husband, David, Morrow, Ohio; a special friend, Brenda Wagers, Corbin; a brother, Fred Romans, Courtland, N.Y.; two sisters: Doris Hubbs, Harlan; and Mae Romans Suchy, Corbin; four grandchildren: Eddie Cook, Liza Faulkner, Samuel Faulkner and Joshua Spurlock; special grandchildren: Kimberly McHargue and Derek McHargue; several nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Malvin Vanover, 70, Evarts, died Sept. 18, 2004, at the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.
A native of Evarts, he lived there most of his life. He was a retired Master Sergeant with 22 years of service in the U.S. Air Force. After retiring from the military, he was employed as a plumber with TECO Mechanical Company. He was currently serving on the Evarts City Council and was an active member of the Yocum Creek Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nancy Kirk Vanover and Henry Vanover; and a grandson, Jeff Burkhart.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Hayes Vanover, Evarts; six children: Malvin Vanover Jr., Carlos Vanover and Carmen Loraine Vanover, all of Winston-Salem, N.C.; Nancy Novella Ewing and husband, Jeff, Evarts; Kris Vanover and wife, Darlene, Lily; and Jo Susan Turner and husband, Ewell King, London; five sisters, Rosie Vanover Smith and husband, E.G., Lily; Liley Vanover, Harlan; Theny Vanover Webb, Middletown, Ohio; Diana Vanover Woolum and husband, Clark, Chapin, S.C.; and Agnes Vanover Hoskins and husband, Verlin; Mich.; three brothers: Ernest Vanover and wife, Julia, Evarts; Fred Vanover, Harlan; and Billy Joe Vanover and wife, Susie, Louisville; five grandchildren: Tim Vanover, Josh Vanover, Kala Vernon, Trevor Ewing and Kristen Vanover; and five great-grandchildren.

Deloria Daniels Ward, 91, Bledsoe, died Sept. 27, 2004, at Britthaven of the Tri-Cities.
A native of Wallins, she was a homemaker and believed in the Baptist faith.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Sarah Ellen Osborne Daniels; and her husband, Edward Ward.
She is survived by four children: Warren Neil Ward, Chicago; Fay Ward Davis, Branson, Mo.; Aileen Ward Saylor, Bledsoe; and Len E. Ward, Bledsoe; two sisters: Cloa Whitehead and Naomi Daniels, both of Wallins; and several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Visitation will be private.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday in the chapel of the Anderson-Laws Funeral Home with the Rev. Keith Coldiron officiating.
Burial will follow in the Wilson Cemetery at Straight Creek.
