Karen Bays, 55, Evarts, died Sept. 12, 2004, at her residence.
She was born Nov. 21, 1948, in Leatherwood.
She was a retired nurses aide and believed in the Church of God faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur Barnes and Ella McDaniels Clark.
Survivors include her husband, James Bays, of Evarts; one aunt, Martha Byrd and husband, Harold, of Red Bud; special niece, Karla Bloodworth and husband, Tom, of Dearborne Heights, Mich.; and several other relatives and friends.
There will be no services.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners Children Hospital in Lexington in memory of Karen Bays.
Mount Pleasant Funeral Home is in charge off arrangements.

David Paul Brewer

David Paul Brewer, 58, Coldiron, died Oct. 9, 2004, at Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital.
He was born Nov. 9, 1945, in Hamilton, Ohio. He was a retired painter and carpenter and believed in the Pentecostal faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl C. Brewer and Loma Belle Brewer; and his father-in-law, Frank Blevins.
Survivors include his wife, Genese Blevins Brewer, Coldiron; one son, Adam Brewer, Coldiron; two brothers: Earl Wayne Brewer, Stanton; and Bobby Drake and wife, Darlene, Stanton; one sister, Karen Hall, Stanton; stepmother, Pearline Brewer, Stanton; mother-in-law, Nora Blevins, Coldiron; sister-in-law, Gina Saylor and husband, Bruce, Coldiron; one aunt, Gladys Davidson, Wallins; special cousin, Joyce Cole and husband, Danny, Wallins; and several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Visitation is today from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the chapel of Mount Pleasant Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Mount Pleasant Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Thomas and the Rev. Ronnie Brock officiating. Burial will follow in Laymon Cemetery.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Mount Pleasant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jay Wallace Brown, 67, Cumberland, died Sept. 28, 2004, at his residence.
A native of Utah, he was a retired coal miner from Arch of Kentucky, a veteran of the U.S. military, a volunteer firefighter for Cumberland Fire Department and he believed the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Una Mae Brown, and his parents, Morton and Violet Brown.
Survivors include one son, Mitchell Brown, Hoodsport, Wash.; one daughter, Kristy Cox, Cumberland; three brothers: Jerry Brown, Portland Ore.; Lloyd Brown, Windover, Utah; and Fred Brown, Burleson, Tex.; four sisters: Bonnie Tilbury, Windover, Utah; Betty Haven, Lancaster, Calif.; Raye Freemon, Windover, Utah; and Madge Grant, Richland, Ore.; and two grandchildren: Ryan Danielle Sergent and Bly Sergent, both of Cumberland.
A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Cumberland Valley Funeral Home with Deacon Tip Sexton officiating.
Cumberland Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Reva Burns
Reva Mae Burns, 49, Bledsoe, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital.
She was born May 18, 1955, in Harlan. She was a member of the Bledsoe Pentecostal Church.
She was preceded in death by her father, Carlo Burns Sr.; and two sisters: Faye Etta Burns and Nancy Hensley.
Survivors include her mother, Flora Bailey Burns, Bledsoe; two brothers: Carlo 'J.C.' Burns Jr., Baxter; and Billy Ray Burns and wife, Mary, Bledsoe; four sisters: Frankie Asher and husband. T.J., Bledsoe; Rachel Miniard, Bledsoe; Irene Farley and husband, Henisom, Bledsoe; and Norma Patterson and husband Pete, Baxter; and several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Visitation was Sunday after noon at the Bledsoe Pentecostal Church.
Funeral services will be conducted today at 2 p.m. at the Bledsoe Pentecostal Church with the Rev. Perry Long, the Rev. Gary Grubbs and the Rev. Ron Hensley officiating.
Burial will follow in the Burns Family Cemetery in Bledsoe.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Evelyn P. Bush, 83, Shelbyville, Ind., formerly of Cumberland, died Sept. 29, 2004.
A native of Des Moines, Iowa, she formerly attended the Cumberland Baptist Church.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Glen Bush; and one daughter, Linda Rodregus.
Survivors include six children: David Park, Indiana; Pam Joyce; Bonnie Hall, Illinois; Cheryl Wooten, Indiana; Judy Coy, Indiana; and Nancy Martin, Indiana; one brother, Gene Wesner; one sister, Goldie Deel; eighteen grandchildren; and nineteen grandchildren.
There will be no visitation.
Graveside services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Hall Family Cemetery.
Day and Jones Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Martha Byrd

Martha Byrd, 75, Evarts, died Sept. 13, 2004, at the Harlan Nursing Home.
A native of Verda, she was a former employee of Frito Lay and a housewife, as well as a member of the Red Bud Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilson and Betty Howard McDaniels; two brothers: John and Howard McDaniels; and five sisters: Alice Stone, Nancy Cook, Ellie Barnes Clark, Sarah Madden and Dezzie Wynn.
She is survived by her husband, Harold Byrd, Evarts; three children: Gary Byrd and wife, Sherry, and Bob Byrd and wife, Cindy, all of Wooster, Ohio; and Arthur Rick Byrd and wife, Kathi, Apple Creek, Ohio; one sister, Mae Smith, Roseville, Mich.; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. at Red Bud Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. at the church with the Rev. John Luttrell and the Rev. Wade E. Byrd officiating.
Burial will follow in Lewis Cemetery at Putney.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Rufus Cawood
Pineville
September 16, 2004
Rufus Murrell Cawood, 91, Pineville, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, in Pineville.
An alumnus of Harlan High School, Davidson College and Asheville Business College, he was born in Harlan on Sept. 11, 1913, son of the late Stephen M. And Laura Smith Cawood. He was an owner and manager of Smith-Cawood Hardware in Pineville, represented the Equitable Life Assurance Society, managed the Cumberland Valley Work Opportunities Program and acted as a coal lessor of lands he owned in Harlan, Bell, Leslie and Knox counties.
He was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church and served his congregation in Pineville as a deacon, elder and Sunday School superintendent for more than 65 years. Murrell joined the Boy Scouts of America at 11, served the scouting program as a volunteer for more than 50 years and was awarded the Silver Buffalo, scouting's highest volunteer decoration. He joined the Pineville Kiwanis Club in 1939 and was active in the organization for the remainder of his life, having been awarded the George Hixson Award by Kiwanis International, its highest award for leadership.
He was an avid walker, a Wasioto Winds Gold Course and UK basketball enthusiast and the family genealogist and was beloved as a gentleman by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sophia Gilbert Cawood; five sisters, two brothers, and a son, Thomas Murrell Cawood.
Survivors include his son, Stephen C. Cawood and wife, Jeanette 'Sissy' McCauley Cawood, Pineville; his daughter, Janie Cawood Brooking, Pineville; grandchildren: Charles 'Biff' Brooking, Hattiesburg, Mich.; Virginia 'Ginny' Jenkins and husband, Spike, Kingsport, Tenn.; Elizabeth Cawood Overman and husband, Bill, Lexington; Mary Amanda Cawood, Nashville, Tenn.; and Candace Cawood and fiance, Jason Webb, Pineville; great-grandchildren: Sarah and Stephen Cawood and Chase Jenkins, Kingsport; and Charles William Overman Jr., Lexington; and special caregivers, Reba Patterson and Wilma Moseley.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Presbytarian Church of Pineville with the Rev. Jim Woodring and the Rev. Troy Eslinger officiating.
Pallbearers will be Biff Brooking, Stephen Clark Cawood, Bill Overman, Spike Jenkins, Wade Bevins, Carl Edward Cawood, Sid Douglass, John Slusher and James 'Biff' Madon. Honorary pallbearers will be Fred Bush, Jimmy Pursiful, Ed McClellan, Sam Morgan, Kiwanians and elders of the Presbyterian Church.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Presbytarian Church of Pineville.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Arnett & Steele Funeral Home, Pineville. Guestbook at www.arnettsteele.com.
