Effie 'Tootsie' Howard, 72, Speedwell, Tenn., formerly of Harlan, died Oct. 4, 2003, at Saint Mary's Medical Center in LaFollette, Tenn.
A native of Bell County, she was a retired factory worker and believed in the Pentecostal faith.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Adam Christian and Mary North Christian; her husband, Ray Berry Howard, a son, Jimmy Wayne Howard; one brother, Charles Christian; and one sister, Della McQueen.
Survivors include eight children: Charles Ray Howard, and wife, Sylvia, Callahan, Fla.; Paris Howard and wife, Trina, Canton, Mich.; Barbara Saylor and husband, Lonnie Ted, Molus; Avon Hensley and husband Ernest, Corbin; Danny Howard, Speedwell, Tenn.; Mark Howard, Harrogate, Tenn.; Pauline Osborne and husband, Donald; and Luke Howard, all of Speedwell, Tenn.; one daughter-in-law, Rose Howard, Speedwell, Tenn.; four brothers and sisters: Hiram Christian, Speedwell, Tenn.; Lavern Christian and wife, Jo, Ohio; Leroy Christian, Speedwell, Tenn.; and Pauline P. Pool and husband, Glenn, Ohio; one sister-in-law, Lois Christian, London; and 26 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held today until the hour of the funeral on Tuesday at Liberty Pentecostal Church in Molus.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Carl Eldridge and the Rev. Everette Eads officiating.
Burial will follow in the Christian Family Cemetery in Wallins.
Sons and grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Venus Smith Jones, 87, Harlan, died Oct. 3, 2003, at Saint Joseph Hospital in Lexington.
She was a homemaker and retired from the state highway department as a book keeper with more than 20 years of service. She was a member of the Harlan Baptist Church and was a member of the Glory Singers.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Green Day and Emily Moore Day; two husbands: Omar F. Smith and John L. Howard; two children: Clark Smith and Shirley Jones and three sisters.
She is survived by her husband, Clyde Jones, Harlan; two sons: James H. Smith and wife, Isabelle, Frankfort and Robert F. Smith and wife, Betty, Ewing, Va.; four grandchildren: Micahel Scott Smith and David Allen Smith, both of Frankfort; William Yeary Smith and Heidie Elizabeth Smith, both of Knoxville, Tenn.; five great-grandchildren, three nieces and two special cousins: Bobby Coldiron and Jean Legg.
Visitation will be today from 6 to 9 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. John Ditty and the Rev. Herman Moore officiating.
Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery.
Pallbearers will include Scott Smith, David Smith, William Yeary Smith, Greg Smith, Bill Smith and Dan Freeman.
Honorary pallbearers will include the men of the Harlan Baptist Church.

Nell Sergent, 69, Rosspoint, died Oct. 4, 2003, at Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital.
A native of Texas, she was a retired nurse at Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital and a member of the Harlan Church of Christ.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Ethel Montrose.
Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Lee Sergent, Rosspoint; three children: Kay Ray, Texas; Cathy Woudema and husband, Martin, Owensboro; and Candy Flannery, Nashville, Tenn.; five brothers: Charlie Montrose, Poynor, Texas; Bob Montross, Poynor, Texas; Billy Montrose, Borger, Texas; Jimmy Montrose, Abilene, Texas; and Wayne Montrose, Poynor, Texas; four sisters: Margaret Riggins, Marshall, Texas; Jane Gibson, Lufkin, Texas; Ruby Costlow, Abilene, Texas; and Mary Ann Hammon, Abilene, Texas; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were conducted Sunday at Rich Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Autry Funeral Home in Jacksonville, Texas.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Church of Christ in Poynor, Texas, with the Rev. Robert L. Burns officiating.
Burial will follow in Poynor Cemetery in Texas.

Elijah Kelly, 80, Somerset, died Nov. 29, 2003, at his home.
A native of Highsplint, Kelly had lived there until moving to Somerset approximately 20 years ago. He was a retired coal miner, having worked at the Highsplint Coal Company and the Glenbrook Coal Company. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America and believed in the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Sarah Jones Kelly; his father, John G. Kelly; his first wife, Hattie Pendergrass Dugger Kelly; his second wife, Dorthy Faye Causey Kelly; two sisters: Tilda and Molly; five brothers, Delmus, Dave, Moss, George Deway and Hobart Kelly.
Survivors include two daughters: Bernice Kelly, Somerset; and Robbie Kelly Boyke and husband, James, Warren, Mich.; two sisters: Laura Wilkerson, Ages; and Isabelle Jackson, Kenvir; one brother, Delmar 'Doc' Kelly, Highsplint; four grandchildren: Jason Boyke, Mary Ellen Boyke, Elijah Lindsay and Billy Lindsay; two great-grandchildren: Natassja Katlyn Lindsay and William Patrick Lindsay; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Visitation will be held today from 10 a.m. until the hour of the funeral at Evarts Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted today at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Bill Moore officiating.
Burial will follow in the Evarts Memorial Gardens.
