James Clyde Cooley
1925-2008
MOREHEAD – James Clyde Cooley, age 83, of Chestnut Lane, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Friday, October 3, 2008, at his residence.
Born April 25, 1925, in Olive Hill, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Elmer and Rebecca Butler Cooley. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Homer Cooley, and in 1949 his son, Larry Michael Cooley.
Clyde is survived by his wife of 59 years, Delores Burchett Cooley, whom he married January 12, 1949; one daughter, Linda D. Cooley Fultz and husband Paul; and one grandson, Michael Paul Fultz, all of Morehead, Kentucky; and two brothers, Earl Cooley and wife Becky of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, and Anthony Cooley of Lexington, Kentucky.
Clyde served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-46 and retired from the The Morehead News after 32 years of service as the linotype operator and cameraman. A well-known and respected photographer, Clyde and Delores owned and operated Cooley’s Photography and through the years captured hundreds of weddings and other memorable events. He was a member of Johnson First Church of God.
Funeral services were conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, October 5, 2008, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Ben Furman officiating. Burial was in the Baker Cemetery in Carter County, Kentucky, with full military rites conducted by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126.
Pallbearers were Douglas Burchett, James Burchett, Mitchell Burchett, Bryan Burchett, Ronald Cooley, and Donnie Fultz. Honorary Pallbearers were Jolly Burchett, James A. Burchett, John Paul Burchett, Daniel Burchett, David Burchett, Bob Shay, and James D. Hall.
Visitation was after 4 p.m. Saturday, October 4, 2008, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Claire Hospice, 222 Medical Circle, Morehead, KY 40351; Johnson Church of God Youth Group, 590 Cranston Road, Morehead, KY 40351; or Hope Pregnancy Center, 167 E. Main Street, Morehead, KY 40351.

Gene Russell Hall
1969-2008
Mt. Sterling - Gene Russell Hall, age 39, of Darley Creek, Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, October 4, 2008, at St. Joseph Hospital in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky.
He was born June 12, 1969, in Mansfield, Ohio, and is the son of Mike Hall, Sr. of Morehead, Kentucky and Rita Smith of Mansfield, Ohio.
Gene is survived by one son, Roman Kyle Patrick of Morehead, Kentucky; three daughters, Rebecca Reynolds of Morehead, Kentucky, Starly Smoot of Flemingsburg, Kentucky, and Savannah Hall of Montgomery County, Kentucky; and four grandchildren.
Also surviving are paternal grandparents, Gene and Hazel Bear Hall of Morehead, Kentucky; one brother, Mike Hall, Jr. of Montana; and one sister, Jeanette Powers of Illinois.
Gene was a salesman for A+ Rentals in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky.
Private graveside services will be held at Hall Family Cemetery on Big Perry Road, Morehead, Kentucky. There will be no visitation.
Arrangements are under the direction of Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.

Ina Howard Gray
1908-2008
MOREHEAD - Ina Howard Gray, age 100, of Gray Ridge in Elliott County, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, June 29, 2008, at the Greenewood Manor in Xenia, Ohio.
Born February 8, 1908, in Elliott County, Ina was the daughter of the late Harve and Elizabeth Brown Howard. Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by six siblings; and three sons, Edward Binion, Clyde Binion and Lonnie Binion. Her husband, Virgil Gray, passed away on February 8, 1983.
Mrs. Gray is survived by four daughters, Betty Marie Purdy and Dixie Gray, both of Ypsilanti, Michigan, Margie Brickey of Xenia, Ohio, and Pauline Fannin of Fayetteville, Tennessee; three sons, Autie Binion of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Roger Gray of Elliott County, Kentucky, and Denzil Gray of San Antonio, Texas.
She is also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
Mrs. Gray was a homemaker and devoted mother and grandmother. She was a member of the Enterprise Apostolic Church in Carter County, Kentucky.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, July 3, 2008, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with her grandson, the Rev. Daril Edwin Fannin, officiating. Burial will follow in the Whitt Cemetery in Elliott County.
Visitation is after 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, 2008, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.

Mary Frances Hamm
1941-2008
MOREHEAD - Mary Frances Hamm, age 66, of Shirley, Indiana, passed away Saturday, June 28, 2008, at the Henry County Hospital following an extended illness.
She was born October 11, 1941, in Morehead, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Ernest and Shirlda Burton Whisman. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Howard Whisman. Her husband, John Richard Hamm, passed away on March 26, 2006.
She is survived by two daughters, Theresa Frank and husband David of Fishers, Indiana, and Alisa Littleton and husband Joseph of Morehead, Kentucky; five grandchildren, Chuck, Katie, and Emily Littleton, all of Morehead, Kentucky, and Benjamin and Adam Frank, both of Fishers, Indiana.
Other survivors include seven siblings, Juanita Sweeney of Georgetown, Kentucky, Ina Mae Stacey, Glen Whisman, David Whisman, Bonnie Mason, Jack Whisman, and James Whisman, all of Morehead, Kentucky, and several nieces and nephews, including Louise Hopkins of New Castle, Indiana.
Mrs. Hamm moved to Henry County, Indiana, in 1957 and was employed for over 23 years at Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield as a nursing assistant. She was then employed for over seven years at Kennard Elementary School as a custodian. A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, she loved to garden and was a member of the Kennard Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, July 3, 2008, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Pastor Randle Morris officiating. Burial will follow in the Hogge Cemetery.
Visitation is after noon Thursday, July 3, 2008, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.

Belva Sammons
1949-2008
ASHLAND - Belva Lynn Sammons, 58, of Morehead, died Friday, June 27, 2008 at King’s Daughters Medical Center.
She was born Oct. 6, 1949 in Ashland, the daughter of Grant Sammons of Ashland and the late Barbara Jean Sammons.
She was a retired administrator and counselor for Morehead State University, very active in Girl Scouts of America, served in numerous professional organizations, and was a member of First Baptist Church in Morehead.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by a nephew, Robert Eric Sammons. Survivors, other than her father, include three brothers, Guy Sammons of Ashland, Mike Sammons and his wife Dorothy of Cannonsburg, and Stanley Sammons and his wife Karen of Ashland; and a very dear friend, Debbie Reed of Morehead.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 1 at Pollard Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Mantooth officiating. Burial will follow in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens. Visitation was at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at First Baptist Church in Morehead. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to First Baptist Church in Morehead, 123 E. Main Street, Morehead, KY 40351.

Gladys Carol Lacy Martin
1953-2007
MOREHEAD - Gladys Carol Lacy Martin, age 53, of Lost Hill Road, Clearfield, passed away Sunday, December 16, 2007, at her residence.
She was born December 17, 1953, in Rowan County and was the daughter of the late Esmond Leo (Red) Lacy and Myrtle Brown Lacy. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Shirley Rivers and Kathy Lacy; one brother, Vernon Hay; and one grandchild, Dakota Johnson.
She is survived by her companion, Glenn Jones of Clearfield; one son, Jason Martin and his wife Tasha of Clearfield; one daughter, Patty Johnson and her husband Douglas of Soldier; one sister, Connie Rzonca of Morehead; and five grandchildren, Brandi Martin, Lakota Johnson, Drake Martin, Blake Martin, and Jayden Martin. Also surviving is a special lifelong friend, Wanda Earls of Salt Lick, several nieces and nephews, and other family and friends.
In addition to being a homemaker, Carol was a former employee of Cox’s Fruit Market and Revco Drug Store. She recently accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 19, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Randy Smith officiating. Burial will be in Jones Ridge Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jason Martin, Pat Martin, Shawn Adams, Kevin Easterling, Jon Thompson, Ernie Wallace, James Wallace, and Gene Glover. Honorary pallbearers will be Anthony Wallace and Mitchell Caudill.
Visitation is after 5 p.m. Tuesday, December 18, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.

Gene Edward Johnson
1966-2007
MOREHEAD - Gene Edward Johnson, age 41, of Knoxville, Tennessee, formerly of Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Friday, December 21, 2007, at his residence.
He was born April 29, 1966, in Dayton, Ohio, and was the son of Bobby Johnson and Shirley Terrell Johnson of Hillsboro, Kentucky, and the late Patricia Conley Young of Knoxville.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one daughter, Sydney Brianna Johnson, and one son, Dalton Patrick Johnson, both of Knoxville, Tennessee. Also surviving are one brother, Rick Johnson of Portsmouth, Ohio, and three sisters, Tammy Darby and husband Jeff of Bucyrus, Ohio, Penny Bowman and husband Johnny of Morehead, Kentucky, and Glenda Meredith of Wichita Falls, Texas.
Gene was a 1984 graduate of Rowan County Senior High School where he was a member of the baseball and football teams.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday, December 27, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. James DeAtley officiating. Burial will be in the New Alfrey Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Travis Johnson, Jeremy Darby, Jareb Darby, Jonathan Bowman, Michael Hardin, Sean Johnson, Greg Jackson, and Robbie Barker.
Visitation is after 5 p.m. Wednesday, December 26, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.
