HOWARD
Charles “Chig” Eugene Howard, age 69, of Pathfork, passed away on Monday, April 22, 2013 at his home. He was born in Pathfork, Kentucky, on January 22, 1944, a son of the late Johnny and Myrtle Earles Howard. He was a member of the Blackstar Pentecostal Church and had been a coal miner.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Louise Howard, and his brothers and sisters; Violet Howard, Fanny Haley, Rusaw Howard, Minarae Howard, Irene Howard, Ollie Howard, Kathleen Miracle, Paul Collett, and Robert Collett and brother-in-law, Thurman Daniel.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Gearldine Wilson Howard; daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Rev. Bill Engle Jr.; two granddaughters, Hannah Engle and Rachel Engle; beloved pets, Baby and Lucky Engle; brother, Josh and Myra Howard; sisters, Minnia and Buddy Saylor, Mae Daniel and Lorena Hobbs; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Services will be at 1:00PM Thursday at the Blackstar Pentecostal Church with Rev. J.C. Craig and Rev. David Howard. Music will be by the Blackstar Church Singers. Burial will be in the Saylor Cemetery at Pathfork with family and friends serving as pallbearers .
The family will receive friends from 6 until 9 PM Wednesday at the Blackstar Church. Arnett & Steele Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Pineville, is honored to serve the Howard Family.
OSBORNE
Mona Lou “Blanton” Osborne, 80, of Jeffersonville, IN, formerly of Wallins, passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2013.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jess and Roberta Blanton; and brother, William Blanton.
She is survived by her loving husband, Bass Osborne; daughter, Betty Cotterill; three sons, David B. Osborne, Robert N. Osborne and John W. Osborne; two sisters, Betty Jean Reynolds and Serena Marcum; five brothers, Glenn E. Blanton, Grover Blanton, Eugene Blanton, Charles Blanton and Hayward Blanton; five grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 11:00 am Tuesday at the Osborne Family Cemetery, Wallins, KY.

HELTON
James Clark Helton, 50 of Watts Creek passed away Friday, June 21, 2013, at the Harlan App. Reg. Hospital. Born August 12, 1962 he was a native and lifelong resident of Harlan County.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jimmie Helton and Clara Sue Farley Helton.
James is survived by two children, Samantha Joseph and husband Adam, Watts Creek; and Jamie Lee Bell and husband Kevin, Greensburg, KY; one brother, Michael Helton, Watts Creek; two grandchildren, Kaleb Helton and Reese Bell.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Loyall Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 25, 2013, in the chapel of Loyall Funeral Home with Reverend Russell Gilbert officiating.
Burial will be in the Helton Cemetery, Watts Creek, KY.
Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

MURPHY
Ina Agnes Murphy, 88, of Tri-Cities Health and Rehabilitation Center in Cumberland, formerly of Evarts, passed away Saturday, June 22, 2013, following a long illness. Born August 4, 1924 in Lay, Kentucky, she had lived in Harlan County most of her life.
Agnes was preceded in death by her husband, Denny Murphy; her parents, Ben Sippel and Dora Douglas Sippel; a son, Elmer Lee Murphy; four sisters, Lillian Asher, Jane Farris, Amy Sippel and Evelyn Miller; and two brothers, Glen Sippel and John Baird Sippel.
Survivors include two children, Mike Murphy and wife, Lora, Cumberland; Lois Murphy West and husband, Jay, Ardmore, AL; a granddaughter, Rachel Murphy Lunsford and husband, Tommy, Cumberland; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Tobey Lunsford; a sister, Betty Branium, Blackwater, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 25, 2013, from 12 until 2 pm at the Evarts Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 pm with Pastor Danny McCreary and Pastor Frank Howard officiating.
Burial will follow in the Evarts Memorial Gardens. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

BRANSON
Pastor Olin Branson age 89 and 11 months of Fairview, KY went home to join the Lord in Heaven on June 23, 2013 in Kingsport, TN at the Wellmont-Holston Valley Medical Center after a Illness. He was born July 28, 1923 in Harlan, KY to the late; Bradley and Nannie Branson. He was a member and Pastor of the Church of True Temples of God. He was a retired Janitor for the Harlan Independent Schools System.
In addition to the Parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter; Phyllis Osborne.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his LOVING wife of 71 years; Thelma Jones Branson of Fairview, KY. One daughter; Bernell Osborne of Fairview, Ky. Son-in-law; Clifford Osborne of Rosspoint, Ky. 4 grandchildren, 8 Great-grandchildren and 7 Great great-grandchildren. Two brothers; Thetford Branson of FL and Curtis Branson of Harlan, KY. Three sisters; Barbara Branson of FL, Loretta Britt of OH and Myrtle Muncy of TN. A host of nieces, nephews and other family and friends also survive.
Visitation will be held Tuesday June 25, 2013 after 3:00 P.M. and Wednesday June 26, 2013 at the Church Of True Temples Of God, located in Fairview, Harlan. Funeral services will be Held Thursday June 27, 2013 at 2:00 PM at the Church of True Temples of God with the Rev. Johnny Nelums and Rev. Jerry Dean officiating. Burial will follow in the Resthaven Cemetery in Keith, KY with family and friends serving as Pallbearers.

UNTHANK
Honorable Judge G. Wix Unthank, 90 of Harlan passed away Tuesday June 25, 2013.
Judge Unthank was born June 14, 1923 in Tway, KY to the Late Green and Estelle Howard Unthank. He graduated from Loyall High School and did his under graduate work at the University of Kentucky. He received his Doctorate from the University of Miami Law School in Coral Gables, FL. He returned to Harlan County to practice Law.
He served his country in the 509 Parachute Battalion of the United States Army during WW II and was a recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals.
After service Judge served many capacities in his lifetime. Besides his private practice of law, her served 7 years as County Judge, he was appointed United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky, served 10 years as Commonwealth Attorney, and in 1980 was appointed United States Federal Judge for the Eastern District of Kentucky. He was a longtime and faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Harlan.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Nannilee Criscillis, and brother, Cecil Unthank.
He leaves his wife, Marilyn Ward Unthank of Harlan; his nephew, Bill Criscillis of Frankfort; several grand nieces and nephews also survive.
Visitation will be 5 until 7:00 pm Thursday June 27, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church of Harlan.
Funeral services will follow at 7:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Janice Stamper and Rev. Kyle Burnette officiating. Music will be provided by Mr. James Greene
Men of the Harlan County Bar Association will serve as Pallbearers.
Burial services will be held 12:00 pm Saturday June 29, 2013 at the Wix Howard Cemetery at Loyall. Military Rites will be performed by the Harlan Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to First Presbyterian Church of Harlan or to one’s favorite charity in memory of Judge G. Wix Unthank.

SERGENT
Kenneth Sergent, age 64, of Baxter, KY passed away June 24, 2013 at the UK Medical Center, Lexington, KY following a long illness. He was born July 22, 1948 in Harlan, KY to James Harold Sergent of Baxter, KY and the late Teddie Sergent. Kenneth was a worker at the mines in Cumberland, KY beginning in 1970. He was employed by and President of J. Harold Sergent Contractors, Inc. He was an honest and fair man who performed work for U.S. Steel, Arch of KY, Black Mountain Resources and Alpha Natural Resources. He was a Christian, a song leader and an elder for many years at the Poorfork Church of Christ and loved his church family. He loved his children and took enormous pride in having 10 grandchildren. He was an avid sports enthusiast and loved to watch his grandchildren play their sports. He loved to fish and it was one of his favorite pass times and he enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren the love of fishing.
Besides his mother he is preceded in death by his brother, Harold Lee Sergent.
Left to mourn his passage is his wife, Karen Lowry Sergent, his children: Malissa Sergent Lewis and husband, Otis Lewis, of Baxter, KY; Wendy Sergent Clem and husband, Jeremy Clem, of Baxter, KY; Kenneth Dallas Sergent and wife, Marlene Osborne Sergent, of Baxter, KY; Denise Sergent Lee and husband, Jeremy Lee, of Harlan, KY; his father, James Harold Sergent, of Baxter, KY; his grandchildren: Tucker Lewis, Hunter Lewis, Eli Lewis, Lily Clem, Dylan Clem, Maggie Clem, Dallas Sergent ll, Drew Sergent, Kevin Thomas Lee and Grant Lee; his sister-in-law, Jenny Sergent, of Baxter, KY; nephews: Allen Sergent, James Lee Sergent, and Matthew Sergent.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 27, 2013 from 5-7pm at Mount Pleasant Funeral Home. Funeral will follow the visitation at 7pm in the chapel of Mount Pleasant with James Forrester officiating. Graveside service will be Friday, June 28, 2013 at 11AM at Middleton Cemetery, Baxter, KY with honorary pallbearers: Men of the Poorfork Church of Christ, Bill Engle and Macky. Family and friends will be pallbearers.
