Frances Irene Skeene

Frances Irene Skeene, 43, of Ponchatoula, Louisiana, formally of Harlan, KY went to her heavenly home and into the arms of her father on Tuesday, January 21, 2015, after a long illness.
Frannie (as she like to be called), was born on October 21, 1971 to Dannie and Ernestine Skeene in Chicago, IL, where she lived until her father’s illness, that brought them back to KY. Frannie was a city gal who became a country gal, with her love of fishing and camping. Having no children of her own, she found joy in the love, laughter, and smiles of her nieces and nephews whom she considered her children. Frannie recently found the love of her life in Louisiana with Jim Galuhn. He was her everything and will always be a part of our family.
Frannie is preceded in death by her grandparents, Ira Dennis Skeene and Elvira Mumford Skeene, Philmore and Vina Hall, her father, Dannie Eugene Skeene, and a sister, Frances Yavonne Skeene, and a brother-in-law, Gary W. Napier.
She is survived by her fiancée, Jim Galuhn of Ponchatoula Louisiana, and her beloved pet Baroo. Her mother, Ernestine Skeene of Evarts, KY. She is also survived by 7 brothers and sisters, Debra (Johnny) Collett of New Tazewell, TN, Carl (Judy) Skeene of Lafollette, TN, Cathy (Mike) Laws of Kitts, KY, Dannie (Michelle) Skeene of Citeronell, AL, Jimmy Skeene and Barbara Skeene of Evarts, KY and Nicole (Ralph) Skeene of Harlan, KY. She is also survived by 38 nieces and nephews and a host of great-nieces and great-nephews, Aunts, Uncles, and cousins that she loved dearly and who loved her more than she will ever know.
A memorial service will be conducted Thursday, January 29, 2015 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Anderson-Laws and Jones Funeral Home. The Rev. H. L. Farley and Sonny Harris will officiate the services.

Jack F. Shephard

Died: Tue., Jan. 27, 2015
Jack F. Shephard, 77 of Harlan, Kentucky left this world January 27, 2015 at the Harlan Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bessie and Dave Shepherd; his wife, Maggie Shephard; brothers and sisters; and two great-grandsons.
Jack is survived by his son, David Shephard; four daughters, Kim Witt, Lisa Blevins, Ritta Bell, and Theresa Witt-Sellers; eleven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, January 29, 2015 at 12:00 PM in the Chapel of Resthaven Cemetery, Keith, Kentucky. The Rev. Robert Keith will officiate the services. David Vaughn, Brad Peterson, Macky Sullivan, Charles Clem, Will Blevins, Justin Walley, and Carlie Farley will serve as pallbearers.

Nettie Mae (Brock) Saylor
Born: Fri., Jan. 14, 1927
Died: Mon., Jan. 19, 2015
Bledsoe-Nettie Mae Brock Saylor, 88 entered her heavenly promotion from this earthly life, a journey and spiritual adventure to find eternal rest at her home with family by her side on Jan. 19, 2015.
She was born Jan. 14, 1927 to a large family in Leslie Co, but lived all of her mature years in Harlan Co., in the Bledsoe area. She was a faithful member of the Green Hills Church and attended Middlefork Methodist Church.
Nettie portrayed a legacy of pure beauty. She was a master gardener, quilter, and treasured singing and hearing God’s word. Being blessed and rich with friends, she will be remembered for her warm hospitality and hearty meals, but nothing compared to the joy and pride she shared with her family, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Nettie could be quoted – Take time – make time – there might not be another time. So if we are here for only a short time – its up to us to bloom where we are planted.
Preceded in death by her parents, Ephie and Birdie Brock of Leslie Co; her sisters, Mallie, Carrie, Tilda, Margie, Rachel, and Mattie; her brothers, Cammie, Carter, Verlis, Howard, Jr., Glen Brock; her husband of 50 years, Pearl Saylor.
Nettie leaves to cherish her fond memories, 4 children, Barbara Sue (Farley) Caldwell of Leslie Co., Mary Ann (Paul) Caldwell, Orville Saylor, and Kimberly (Silas, Jr) Saylor, all of Bledsoe; sister, Nannie Faye Caldwell of Clay Co; brother, Carl Brock of Tazewell, TN; 7 grandchildren, Doyle (Lisa) Caldwell of Hulen, Melody (John) Howard of Baxter, Chris (Cindy) Caldwell, DeRyan (Stephanie) Caldwell, Brandon Saylor, Olivia Saylor, and Casey Saylor all of Bledsoe; 4 great grandchildren, . MaRyan, Dawson, and Kholson Paul Caldwell of Bledsoe, and Lyndsie Howard of Baxter; 2 special great grandchildren, Terry and Johnny Henry; she leaves a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives to mourn her passing.
Visitation will be Thursday (Jan. 22) from 5 until 7:00 pm at the Anderson-Laws & Jones Funeral Home.
Funeral services will follow at 7:00 pm in the Chapel of Anderson-Laws & Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Ted Brock and Rev. Darlene Roberts officiating.
Graveside services will be 11:00 am Friday (Jan. 23) at the Marrowbone Cemetery in Leslie Co., KY with Grandchildren serving as Pallbearers.

Gladys (Anderson) Richards

Gladys Anderson Richards, 88 of Loyall passed away Sunday Jan. 18, 2015 at Baptist Health, Lexington.
Mrs. Richards was the retired President of Richards Oil Company. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Harlan where she served as deacon and elder. She served her community in many capacities including, serving as President of the Harlan Woman’s Club, Board of Directors for the Harlan Chamber of Commerce, charter member of the Harlan High School Alumni Association, Harlan Independent Schools Education Foundation Board, the Advisory Board of the Harlan Co. CAA, and lifetime member of the Kentucky Congress of Parents and Teachers.
She was an accomplished cook and authored 3 cookbooks featuring Harlan County recipes for the Harlan Woman’s Club and Harlan Alumni Association. She was an avid reader and for the 50 years has donated much of her time to helping children who were having problems with their reading.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William Carden Richards; her son, William Charles Richards; brothers, Robert J., Charles T., and Jack E. Anderson; sisters, Betty June Anderson Gibson and Myra Lynn Anderson; daughter-in-law, Kimberly Richards.
She is survived by her son, Robert D. Richards; grandsons, William Charles Richards II, William Carden Richards; granddaughters, Lindsey Ann Richards, Sarah Grace Kidnocker.
Graveside services will be conducted Friday, January 23, 2015 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel at Resthaven Cemetery. The Rev. Kyle Burnette will officiate the services.

Wilma J. (Bolton) France

Loyall-Wilma J. France, 70 of Loyall passed away Wednesday evening of Jan. 21, 2015 at home while surrounded by her family and friends following a valiant and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She will be sadly missed by all the lives she touched and brightened both personally and professionally. The world seems a little dimmer with her gone. She passed out of this world as she lived in it with honor and dignity.
She was a member of Lenarue Baptist Church and retired from Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital with more than 40 years of service the last 20 years being Director and Home Health Administrator.
Preceded in death by Father James Criss and Mother Hulda Edna Whitman Bolton; brother Johnny Ray Bolton, sister Christine Bennett, Father and Mother in law Anthrel and Mariaum Stanton France.
She is survived by her husband Sam J. France of Loyall, Son Anthrel Mark France of Loyall, Brothers James C. Bolton of Cawood, Glen Bolton of Smith, Sisters Claudine Braden of Michigan and Anna Lindsay of Tennessee; she leaves several nieces & nephews and other relatives to mourn her passing.
Visitation will be 6-8 P.M. Friday (Jan. 23) at Anderson- Laws & Jones Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Saturday (Jan. 24) at the Lenarue Baptist Church with Rev. Joe Howard officiating.
Burial will follow in the Resthaven Cemetery at Keith.

Volena (Hawkins) Craft

Volena Hawkins Craft, 87 of Harlan, KY died Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at the Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital. Mrs. Craft was born in Jellico, Tennessee to the Late Ben and Susan Hawkins. She was the widow of the Late Dr. J. W. Craft.
Mrs. Craft was a retired school teacher with the Harlan County Board of Education. She was an alumnus of Cumberland College and had also attended Union College and Eastern Kentucky University. Mrs. Craft was a member and past president of the Harlan Woman’s Club, served on the Harlan Housing Authority and with the Harlan Community Action Agency. She was a member of the Harlan Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star where she had served as an officer for several years. She was a member of the Harlan ARH hospital auxiliary serving in many capacities. She was a member of the Harlan United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her brother, James Hawkins and sisters, Maxine Casey and Peggy Baker.
Surviving are brothers, Wallace Hawkins and Ben Frank Hawkins and sisters, Betty Lowry, Patricia Ball, and Jennie Walters.
Visitation will be Friday, January 30, 2015 from 5:00-7:00 PM in the Chapel of Anderson-Laws and Jones Funeral Home.
Funeral Services will follow the visitation at 7:00 PM also in the chapel of Anderson-Laws and Jones Funeral Home. The Rev. Kyle Burnette will be officiating the services.
