At MSU, Randall rose from the rank of Assistant Professor of Education to Professor of Education. He directed two federal programs in the early ‘70’s which enabled nontraditional students to enroll in protected courses while serving as teachers’ aides in the public schools and eventually earning teaching certificates. He taught undergraduate and graduate classes and supervised numerous student teachers. In 1986, he was named by President A. D. Albright as School Relations Coordinator. Dubbed “Super Recruiter” by Dr. Albright, Randall convinced many bright high school seniors that MSU was the school of choice to further their education. The highlight of that portion of his career came when the enrollment topped 9, 300.
Following the passage of KERA, Randall consulted with public schools in Kentucky and other states training school councils assisting schools with safety issues and other areas of school improvement. He was widely sought after for professional development.

He enjoyed singing all kinds of music, from Elvis favorites, to old standards, to gospel. He has sung patriotic songs, including the national anthem, at numerous events including a UK/MSU basketball game in Rupp Arena. Over the years he has sung for funerals, weddings, church services, community activities. Always, people were blessed by his beautiful tenor voice.
Randy was also very involved in community affairs. In the ‘70’s he served as City Councilman and acting mayor when the mayor was out of town. In 1990 he was appointed to the Gateway Area Development District Board as Rowan County’s citizen representative. He held that position, continuously, until his death. He was on the Rowan County Democratic Executive Committee and the Rowan County Board of Elections. He was a member of the Morehead/Lakeview Heights Planning and Zoning Commission. He served twice on the Gateway Community Services Board. He was appointed by Governor Brereton Jones to the Executive Branch Ethics Commission and was elected chair of that committee. Recently he was appointed to the Kentucky Commission on Aging of the Legislative Research Committee.
Randy was a member of numerous organizations including the Morehead United Methodist Church, Phi Delta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Masonic Lodge for more than 40 years, and Shriners.
Randy will be missed by the many people whose lives he touched-his family, students he taught, the many friends he made while consulting and working in public schools, the churches where he sang, his many friends, and the members of the Morehead United Methodist Church.
