Katherine Williams Palmer Daugherty
1921-2006
MOREHEAD - Kay Daugherty passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 24, 2006 at St. Mary's Hospital with her son, Tom, and daughter, Katie, by her side.
Kay was born in Boston, Massachusetts on July 20, 1921 to the late Sally Caroline Johnson Palmer and John Milton Palmer. She cherished her New England roots and would make annual pilgrimages to Massachusetts with her sister every summer.
Kay's father's business brought them to Kentucky where she grew up in Mt. Sterling and later in Morehead. She graduated from the Peabody Institute in Nashville, TN and completed her masters degree at the University of Kentucky. She met her husband, Jack Daugherty, while in Kentucky. They were married
on August 12, 1942 in Morehead.
Kay and Jack settled in St. Mary's County in 1944. Jack and some of his Navy Pilot buddies decided to stay in the Patuxent River area and build a town. The men established businesses, but it was Kay Daugherty who helped to give the town its soul. She understood the importance of those things that feed a person's spirit like art, music, and literature. She was instrumental in getting a public library in Lexington Park. She was President of the Library Board and a member of the State Library Board for over 15 years. Kay was also founder of the Citizen's Scholarship Foundation, which provides college scholarships to many students from St. Mary's County who would not otherwise be able to receive a college education. Additionally, Kay always was a big supporter of our local artists. Her home is a gallery of sculpture, ceramics, prints and paintings by primarily St. Mary's and Calvert County artists. She was a founder of the Arts Alliance at St. Mary's College, and a supporter of the North End Gallery in Leonardtown.
Kay's love and attention was also shared with the animals of this earth - especially the dogs. If you knew Kay Daugherty, you will remember her always with at least one dog riding in the car with her. She was a champion to every animal who crossed her path and was a supporter of the St. Mary's Animal Welfare League, St. Croix Animal Welfare League, St. Mary's County Humane Society, and the Paw Paw Patch.
There are many other areas where Kay lent her support as well: the Women's Center, St. Mary's College, Health Share, Mary's Song, and her beloved Church of the Ascension. Kay was guided by her faith and loved serving her church. She was a member of the alter guild for many, many years and an active participant in the ECW. She lived every day trying to help others and to bring joy and health into their lives. For that we are eternally grateful.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Sally Johnson Palmer and John Milton Palmer; her sister, Mary Palmer Powell of Morehead, KY; and her husband, Jack Daugherty, of Lexington Park.
Survivors include her son, George Thomas Daugherty; daughter, Katherine Daugherty Watts, both of Lexington Park, MD; three grandchildren: Amy Tepel of Morrison, CO; Rick Tepel of Callaway, MD; and Charles Nugent of Stafford, VA; four great-grandchildren: Jackson Tepel, Carley Tepel, Liam Nugent and Lilianna Nugent; and one nephew, Denny Northcutt of Morehead, KY.
A memorial service was held at the Church of the Ascension on Tuesday, June 27, at 11:00 AM. Following the service, a reception was held at the J.T. Daugherty Conference Center.
Memorial Contributions are suggested to the Church of the Ascension, 21641 Great Mills Road, Lexington Park, MD 20653; or St. Mary's Animal Welfare League (SMAWL), P.O. Box 364, Mechanicsville, MD 20659.
