Lawrence Arnett Jr.
1930-2007
MOREHEAD - Lawrence Arnett, Jr., 77, of Moores Flat Road, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Friday, April 20, 2007, at the St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead following an extended illness.
Lawrence Jr. was born February 6, 1930, in Magoffin County, Kentucky, to Lawrence Sr. and Delia Rowe Arnett. He was the youngest of five sons.
While attending Morehead State University at the age of 18, he received an emergency teaching certificate and soon began teaching in one-room school houses throughout Eastern Kentucky. Lawrence continued his education receiving a master’s degree from M.S.U.
On November 9, 1952, he wed the love of his life, Lorena McClurg. In 1953, he began serving in the U.S. Army at Fort Knox, Kentucky. After a year, his first daughter Elwanda was born. Although he was never called into active duty during the Korean War, he continued in the Army as a Corporal Tank Specialist until 1955.
Mr. Arnett’s first son, Marvin, was born in 1956, and a year later Lawrence was called into the ministry. The growing Arnett family continued to expand, including three new additions, Donna, born in 1958, Lynna, born in 1960, and Marlin, his last child, born in 1963.
In 1960, Lawrence began pastoring at Bowen Chapel in Carter County, where he remained three years. Also during this time, from 1961-1963, he started mission work in Lexington, Kentucky.
In 1967, Bro. Arnett began pastoring at the Salt Lick Freewill Baptist Church where he remained until 2007. His successful ministry included many friendships made with the members of the church who fellowshipped in Christ.
Touching back his roots in education, Junior was instrumental in helping bring adult education to Eastern Kentucky by establishing adult education classes in Vanceburg, Kentucky.
Along with teaching and ministering, Mr. Arnett was president of the Licking Valley Milk Association. One of his favorite jobs was being a counselor at the Frenchburg Correctional Facility where he led many inmates to Christ by living the example of a Christian life. He also loved the land, working in agriculture for many years.
He was a devoted father to Elwanda Cline (Bob Cline) of Salt Lick, Donna (Artie) Parish and Lynna (Barry) Blevins, of Owingsville, and Marlin (Minnie) Arnett of Salt Lick.
He was a loving grandfather to nine grandchildren including Melanie (Shane) Flannery, Tracey (Matt) Cushman, April (Charlie) Ratliff, Bobbie (Josh) Spencer, Tessa (Jason) Thomas, Joshua Cline (Amanda Davis), Jessica (Kyle) Taulbee, Kristen Arnett, and Todd Blevins.
Continuing his legacy are five great-grandchildren, Brooke and Ethan Ratliff, Tori Cushman, Mykenzie and Isaac Flannery.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Marvin Ray Arnett, and four brothers, Arvel, Carvel, Ova, and Sherman Arnett.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Bro. Harley Sexton, Jr., Bro. Robert Kidd, Bro. Randy Smith, and Bro. Winston McClurg officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens with full military rites conducted by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126.
Pallbearers are Randy Cline, Timmy Gibbs, Todd Blevins, Joshua Cline, Claude Jervis, Bob Cline, Artie Parish, and Barry Blevins. Honorary pallbearers are Glen Hall, Dale Crouch, Herb Hyatt, Bruce McClurg, Bob Tackett, Ralph Deskin, Marlin Corey, and Clyde Mabry.
Visitation is after 2 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.
Lydia E. Sparks Day
OHIO - Lydia Ethel Day, age 84, of Reynoldsburg, entered the gates of heaven on Palm Sunday, April 1, 2007, surrounded by her loving family. Lydia was not only the heart of our family, but also a precious Christian mother. Longtime member of Brookside Baptist Church. Preceded in death by her loving husband Chester, parents Hattie and Leburn Sparks, infant daughter Donna Sue Day, granddaughter Angela Denise Baxter, sisters Thelma Pelfrey and Juanita Sparks, and brothers Elbert and Tony Sparks. Survived by children, Patricia (Richard) Carroll, Judy (Michael) Baxter, and William and Steven Day; grandchildren, Cheryl (Jeff) Evans, Donna (Brett) Garrett, Michelle (Jody) Capuano, Trisha (Andy) Click, and Tracy, Stephanie, and Cassie Day; great grandchildren, Justin Hoyt, Adam Ganas, Marina and Mikayla Capuano, Angela and Andrew Click, and Lexie and Alex Day; special sister, Lillian (Lee) Slone; and wonderful brothers, Fred (Hildreth) Sparks, and Robert (Rushia) Sparks. Lydia will be sorely missed, but eternally reunited with her husband of 65 years who passed away just 12 days before she. WELLINGTON - Mr. Arlo D. Manning, age 96, of Wellington, Kentucky passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2007 at the Life Care Center in Morehead, Kentucky.
He was born on April 14, 1911 in Morgan County, Kentucky; son of the late Charles Manning and Clara Havens Manning.
He was a retired from the Dayton Tire & Rubber Company of Dayton, Ohio.
He was a member of Big Woods Community Church in Wellington, Kentucky.
He was preceded in death in addition to his parents by his wife Edith Maiming; 1 son Roger Manning; 1 sister Alice Mays; and 2 brothers Chester and Miles Manning.
He is survived by 2 daughters Sylvia & Otis Powell of Vandalia, Ohio and Carol & Gail Meagley of Wellington, Kentucky; 3 sons Lawrence & Jeanette Manning of Dayton, Ohio, Gary & Lucinda Manning of Taylorsville, Utah, and Dwayne Manning of Sunbury, Ohio; 1 daughter-in-law Sandra Manning of Dayton, Ohio; 1 sister Lilly Mae Rich of Mason, Ohio; 14 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 11 step-great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren, 7 step-great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 24, 2007 at the Big Woods Community Church in Wellington, Kentucky with Rev. Jess Brewer officiating. Burial will follow with interment at the Higgins Cemetery in Wellington, Kentucky. William C. “Bill” Lane
1920 - 2007
MOREHEAD – William C. “Bill” Lane, 86, of Little Road passed away Monday, February 19, 2007 at the St. Claire Regional Medical Center.
He was born on August 16, 1920 in Nicholas County, Kentucky to the late William C. and Mary Dean Hall Lane.
Mr. Lane owned and operated the Lane Funeral Home on Main Street in Morehead for many years. The funeral home also provided ambulance service to the area as was the custom during that time. He and Betty Stucky were partners in Lane-Stucky Funeral Home until they sold their interest to Mike Gray in 1987. Bill was former owner and founder of the Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill. Mr. Lane came to Morehead in 1939 to pursue a degree in agriculture from Morehead Teachers College. He began to work for his uncle, Clark B. Lane at the Lane Funeral Home, while he was attending college. Bill became very interested in the funeral business, so he decided to pursue this career. He graduated from the Cincinnati College of Embalming and became a licensed funeral director and embalmer in 1942. After serving as a Corporal in the United States Army during World War II, where he served as a surgical technician at Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver, Colorado, he came back to Morehead in 1946 and remained here until his death. Bill was an active funeral director and embalmer for over sixty-four years. He was actively involved in the funeral home until his recent illness. Mr. Lane was one of the founders of the Daniel Boone Convalescent Home, which is now Life Care Center. Bill was a member of the Morehead Lions Club, the Morehead Masonic Lodge No. 654, the National Funeral Directors Association and the Kentucky Funeral Directors Association. He attended the Morehead First Baptist Church and enjoyed farming, cattle, horses, gardening, landscaping and woodworking.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, James Wall Lane and two sisters, Lyda Lou Darnall and Edith Chapman.
Survivors include his wife, Ezelle Flannery Lane of Morehead, two sons, William C. Lane III and his wife, Gail of Polkville, North Carolina and Drew Evans Lane and his wife, Jayne of Somerset, one sister, Kathleen Richardson of Mt. Sterling, five grandchildren, William C. Lane IV, Marsha Blaney and her husband, John, Andrew Lane, Evans Lane and his wife, Tiffany and Sarah Cash and her husband, Jim, three great-grandchildren, Justin Lane, Taylor Blaney and Brian Blaney and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, February 22, 2007 in the chapel of the Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home with Dr. Jack Ellis and Rev. Mark Caldwell officiating. Burial was in the Brown Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Bruce Darnall, Timmy Darnall, Tony Darnall, Tom Lane, Rob Lane and John Blaney.
Matthew Allen Leadingham
1981 - 2007
MOREHEAD - Mr. Matthew Allen Leadingham, age 25, of Morehead, passed away Monday afternoon, February 19, 2007 at his residence in Morehead, Kentucky.
Mr. Leadingham was born December 31, 1981 in Boyd County, Kentucky and is a son of Velton Leadingham of Hickory, North Carolina and Glenda Caner Leadingham of Morehead, Kentucky.
Matthew was a construction worker.
He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Eugene and Betty Barker Leadingham and maternal grandparents Johnie and Martha Roe Carter.
In addition to his parents he is survived by two brothers, Anthony Leadingham of Morehead, Kentucky and Johnnie Lee Leadingham of Winchester; one sister, Melinda Leadingham of Sandy Hook, Kentucky; two nieces, Ashleigh Faith Leadingham and Savana Hope Garris; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who will sadly miss him.
Funeral services were held Thursday, February 22, 2007 at the Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, Kentucky with Brother Johnny Austin Carter, Brother Tim Glance and Brother Tim Humes officiating. Burial followed in the John R. Carter Cemetery in Elliott County, Kentucky.
Tony Holbrook, Mark Bailey, Greg Carter, Adam Carter, Josh Carpenter and Scottie Leadingham served as pallbearers.
James Othar Stevens
1926 - 2007
MOREHEAD - Mr. James Othar Stevens, age 50, of Morehead, Kentucky went home to be with the Lord Monday morning, February 19, 2007 at his residence in Morehead, Kentucky.
Mr. Stevens was born November 11, 1926 in Carter County, Kentucky and is a son of the late James H. and Margaret Barker Stevens.
Othar was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was a Christian and was of the United Baptist faith. He was retired from the Kentucky State Highway Department where he worked for many years.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by three brothers, Tom Stevens, Marvin Stevens and Ed Stevens; three sisters, Ethel Stevens, Ola Knipp and Lola Messer; one son-in-law, Neil Fraley.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, Louise Bailey Stevens; one son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Leslie Stevens of Morehead, Kentucky; three daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Von Kiser of Olive Hill, Kentucky, Vicki and Tony DeHart of Mount Sterling, Kentucky, and Lorie and Jeff Callihan of Morehead, Kentucky; eight grandchildren, Ashley Stevens and (Jimmy Howard), Chris Callihan, Alix Stevens, Sarah Callihan, Traci Shae Stevens, Katlyn Callihan, Kelsey Stevens, and Blake Stevens; one great-grandchild, Boone Howard; two brothers, Hermel Stevens and Stanley Stevens, both of Delong, Indiana; two sisters, Dollie Sammons of Olive Hill, Kentucky and Elizabeth Waddell of Elliott County, Kentucky; a very special friend, Cecil Moore of Morehead, Kentucky; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends who will sadly miss him.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, February 23, 2007 at the Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, Kentucky with Elder Owen Cox and Elder Eury Barker officiating. Burial will follow in the Cranston Cemetery in Morehead, Kentucky.
Friends may call until time of service Friday at the Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, Kentucky.
