Alfred Edward McGlothin
1951-2007
MOREHEAD - Alfred Edward McGlothin, age 56, of Clearfield Street, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Monday, June 25, 2007, at Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, West Virginia.
Born April 30, 1951, in Rowan County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Oscar Davis McGlothin and Emma Deal Parsons McGlothin. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Adkins.
Alfred is survived by four sisters, Bessie Pernell, Lizzie Jessie, and Beulah Switzer, all of Morehead, Kentucky, and Nora Parsons of Union City, Indiana; two brothers, Jimmy McGlothin of Lexington, Kentucky, and Oscar McGlothin, Jr., of Morehead, Kentucky; three nephews, Derick McGlothin, Chris Parsons, and Herman David Adkins; and one great-niece, Delana Adkins.
He was a former employee of the city of Morehead Maintenance Department and a self-employed laborer.
Funeral services were conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, June 28, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. H. G. Pratt officiating; burial was in Lee Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Bobby Adams, Robbie Adams, Willie Ingle, Alex Wagoner, Jack Roe, and Larry Fannin.
Visitation was Wednesday, June 27, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.
James M. Messer
1926-2007
MOREHEAD - James M. Messer, age 81, of Messer Road, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2007, at the St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead. Born April 13, 1926, in Rowan County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Wm. and Louada Moore Messer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Aileen Roark, Chlotean Calvert, and Ruth James.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Thompson Messer, whom he wed February 9, 1950; one son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Lorene Messer of Morehead, Kentucky, and one daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Bill Jones of Lincoln University, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by several nieces and one nephew.
A U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II, James retired as manager of Allen’s I.G.A. after 18 years of service. He had also owned and operated Messer Grocery in Salt Lick, Kentucky, and was a former employee of Union Wholesale.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, June 29, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Tim Rhodes and the Rev. Charlie Hamm officiating. Burial will follow in the Moore Cemetery with full military rites conducted at the graveside by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126.
Pallbearers will be Mindi Brown, Josh Brown, Jackie Thomas, Brad Thomas, Mike Thomas, Raymond Moore, Bill Jones, and Jackie Middleton.
Honorary pallbearers will be crew members of U.S.S. Tatum APD 81.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Thursday, June 28, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.
Sue Bang
Sue Mayse Bang, 64, of Sandy Hook, died Jan. 19. She worked as a computer technician at Morehead State, where she worked from 1978-2005.
Survivors include her husband Charlie Bang.
A memorial gathering was Jan. 25 at Lewis & Ferguson Funeral Home in Sandy Hook.
Jason A. Healey
1980-2007
MOREHEAD - Jason A. Healey, age 26, of Flemingsburg Road, Morehead, passed away January 21, 2007. Born July 16, 1980, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, he is the son of Victor A. Healey of Lawrenceburg and the late Elizabeth June Lewis Healey.
In addition to his father, he is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth Jean Lewis of Morehead; four sisters, Adriane Healey Spencer and her husband Matt of Cape Coral, FL, Carrie Utt and her husband Brian of Beverly, WV, Kellie Sturdivant of Beverly, WV and Tamara Hurst of Frankfort; paternal grandparents, Wilbur and Nora Barlow Healey of Elkins, WV; maternal grandmother, Deloris Liggett of Elkins, WV; one nephew, Corey Sprouse of Beverly, WV; aunts and uncles of Elkins, WV and special friend Rebecca Lewis of Morehead.
A 1998 graduate of Rowan County Senior High School, Jason was also a 2004 graduate of Lackland Air Force Base and a Senior Airman with Kentucky Air National Guard. He was the owner of Pro Shine Auto Detailing and Accessories and a member of the “Delayed Reaction” Band.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, January 25, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Chaplain James Ekrman officiating. Full military rites will be conducted by the KYANG Honor Guard.
Erna Kidd
1932-2007
MOREHEAD - Erna Kidd, 74, of Pleasant Valley passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at her residence after an extended illness.
She was born on July 16, 1932 in Rowan County, Kentucky to the late John Will and Dora Kidd.
Ms. Kidd was retired from Cowden Manufacturing Company and a retired nurse's aid from St. Claire Regional Medical Center. She was a member of the Upper
Dry Creek Church of God and enjoyed quilting, vegetable gardening and her family, especially her great-nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Leslie Kidd, Delbert Kidd and Virgil Kidd and three sisters, Myrtle Kidd, Stella Workman and Bertha Adkins.
Survivors include two sisters, Edna Catron and her husband, Talmadge of Clearfield and Edith Catron of Mansfield, Ohio, three nieces, Janice Hatton and her husband, Nelson of Clearfield, Brenda Burton of Morehead and Kathy Catron of Mansfield, Ohio, two nephews, Dewayne Kidd of Springfield, Ohio and Rick Catron of Mansfield, Ohio and three great-nephews, Brandon Hatton, Byron Burton and Dustin Kidd.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Friday, January 26, 2007 in the chapel of the Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Madden and Rev. Steve Madden officiating. Burial will follow in the Sloan Cemetery in Morgan County.
Pallbearers will be Ray Lewis, Charlie Pruitt, Talmadge Catron, Paul Perkins, Rick Catron, Gary Madden, Steve Madden, Pete Davis and Rick Littleton.
Melvin Carpenter
Melvin L. Carpenter, age 74, son of the late James Carpenter and Roxie Dale White Carpenter Johnson, grandson of James and Bertha White, Leander and Louise Carpenter, brother of the late Gene and Douglas Carpenter, sisters Brenda Murphy and Deborah Johnson. He is survived by his wife Diane, daughters Deborah Adams, Patricia Romano, Mary Bryant, and Theresa Carpenter, sons Christopher and Jay Carpenter, brothers Richard and Norman Carpenter, Kermit Johnson Jr., sister Lou (Judy) Cuccia, stepmother Julie Carpenter, stepfather Kermit Johnson Sr.
Melvin was retired from G.M. He was a US Army veteran. He became a hero when he rescued three people from a crashed burning plane near Cleveland, Ohio. He leaves seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, six stepchildren, one late stepdaughter, and one great step-grandson. He is resting at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Avon, Ohio.
Calvin Rigsby
1948-2007
WEST LIBERTY - Calvin Rigsby of West Liberty, KY passed away Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington, KY, at the age of 58. He was born on Tuesday, April 27, 1948 at Zag, KY, a son of the late Arthur and Ivory Weaver Rigsby.
Calvin served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was united in marriage to Betty Gean Perry on August 10, 1970. To this union two daughters were born, Sheila and Laura. He was a Prison Supervisor, a born again Christian and attended Elliottville Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Willard Rigsby, Dale Rigsby, Allie Rigsby, Carl Rigsby, Ira Rigsby and Wilburn Rigsby; and two sisters, Pearl McKee and Joyce Reed.
He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Betty Gean Rigsby; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sheila and Anthony Mays and Laura and Tim Riddle, all of Blairs Mill, KY; five grandchildren, Eric Mays, Evan Mays, Emily Mays, Lee Riddle, and Walker Riddle; one brother, Paul Rigsby and wife Linda of Leesburg, Ohio; two sisters, Gail Rigsby and Wilma Miller and husband Don all of Cedarville, Ohio.
Funeral services were Friday January 5, 2007 at Potter Funeral Home Chapel. Burial in the Rigsby and Perry Cemetery, Minor Road, West Liberty, KY, with the Morgan County DAV conducting military rites.
Virginia Lee “Jenny” Cornett Barker
1914-2007
MOREHEAD - Virginia Lee “Jenny” Cornett Barker, age 93, of Christian Street, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, June 23, 2007, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Kentucky.
Born June 14, 1914, in Knott County, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Sam S. and Rachel Hudson Cornett. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Kern Cornett, George Cornett, and James Cornett, and three sisters, Elmo Justice, May Patrick, and Minnie Newland.
Her husband, Elva C. “Curley” Barker, whom she married
on December 26, 1945, passed away August 2, 1991.
Mrs. Barker is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Karen Barker and Jeff and Carol Barker, and one daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Tom Bishop, all of Morehead, Kentucky; one brother, E. J. Cornett of Hindman, Kentucky; two sisters, Hope Mullins of Wurtland, Kentucky and Dale Lyons of Hindman, Kentucky; six grandchildren, Kim (and Mike) Tabor, Kipp (and Lisa) Barker, Paul Bishop III, Kelly Bishop, Rachel Barker, and Sara Barker; and four great-grandchildren, Reilly Barker, Ramsey McCoy, Kellen Tabor, and Madison Barker.
Jenny was a graduate of Hindman Settlement School and Morehead State Teachers College. She taught at Haldeman and Morehead Grade before retiring from the Rowan County school system. For many years, she and her husband “Curley” owned and operated the Big Store Furniture. She was a member of the Morehead Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years and was a member of the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 26, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Michael Blankenship officiating. Burial will follow in Lee Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Paul Bishop, Mike Curtis, Ramsey McCoy, Gene Mullins, Joe Mullins, Kenny Mullins, Hercel Patrick, and Mike Tabor.
