Paul Morgan Goodpaster
OWINGSVILLE - Paul Morgan Goodpaster, 59, husband of Linda Gayle Brooks Goodpaster, passed away on Friday, February 9, 2007 at his home in Owingsville, Kentucky. He attended Owingsville Elementary School, graduated from Hazel Green Academy and attended Eastern Kentucky University and Morehead State University. He served as PVA in Bath County for the past 29 years and was a Certified Kentucky Assessor and Senior Kentucky Assessor through the Department of Revenue. He had served as Bath County Democratic Chairperson.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three children, Paul Chiles Goodpaster with his wife Kim and grandchildren Brandon, Brooke and Nathan of Morehead; Tamela Rae Goodpaster Porter with her husband Darrell and grandchildren Haleigh and Jake of Owingsville; and Justin Morgan Goodpaster of Owingsville. He is also survived by a brother, Phil, with his wife Dottie Goodpaster and nephew Aaron; and a sister, Laura Goodpaster Johnson with her husband Joe and niece Erica and great nephew Jayce. He was preceded in death by his father Espy Chiles Goodpaster and mother Non Ellen Duff Goodpaster.
Funeral was held Tuesday at Owingsville First Church of God with the Rev. Lowell Rice officiating. Memorial contributions can be made to the Paul Morgan Goodpaster memorial fund at the Citizens Bank, 22 Main St., Owingsville, KY 40360. Richardson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Juanita Campbell Williams
1916-2007
MOREHEAD - Juanita Campbell Williams, age 91, of Fleming Avenue, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, May 20, 2007, at the home of her daughter on Skaggs Road in Morehead. Born February 4, 1916, in Rowan County, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Emma Hall Campbell.
Her husband, Clester Burns Williams, whom she married
on February 23, 1937, passed away July 17, 1979. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Lottie Holland, and four brothers, Fred, James, Lester, and infant Harold Clayton Campbell.
She is survived by two daughters, Lois W. Carter of Morehead, Kentucky, and Patty A. Williams, of Clearfield, Kentucky; one grandson, Dr. Alan Bruce Carter and his wife Christy and two great-granddaughters, Sydney and Riley, all of Lexington, Kentucky.
Other survivors include six sisters, Libby Bailey of Rising Sun, Indiana, Audrey Booso of Milford, Ohio, Geraldine Decker of Lexington, Kentucky, Mae Workman of Morehead, Kentucky, Freda (James Harold) Caudill of Salisbury, North Carolina, and Flora (Bob) Vickers of Williamsburg, Ohio; two brothers, Allen Campbell and Bill Campbell, both of Cincinnati, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
Juanita was a homemaker and well-known seamstress and volunteer. She was a 50-year member of Morehead Chapter 227 Order of the Eastern Star, a former member of St. Claire Auxiliary and volunteer with the Rowan County schools, and RSVP. A longtime member of Morehead First Freewill Baptist Church, she sang in the Choir and was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. David Starcher officiating. Burial will follow in the Williams Cemetery at Elliottville, Kentucky. Pallbearers will be Alan Bruce Carter, Clayton Williams, Sanford Bentley, Terry Riddle, Brad Bennington, Doug Jones, and Ted Trent.
Visitation is after 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.
Opal H. Barker
1918-2007
Opal H. Barker, 88, formerly of 617 N. Henry Street, Crestline, died Monday, April 9, 2007 at Crestline Nursing Home, Crestline.
Mrs. Barker was born in Clearfield, KY on October 14, 1918 to the late Chester Vernon and Chloie (Amburgy) Alfrey. She married
Loren Barker on February 28, 1936 and he preceded her in death on Sept. 1, 2005.
She worked for a time at the former O’Neil’s Dept. Store and loved being with the public. Mrs. Barker was a member of Gospel Baptist Church, Galion. She was a beautiful seamstress and loved needlework. She learned to play the organ in her later years and was passionate about her playing. She loved people. She loved her family and spent as much time with them as possible. She loved the Lord.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Ronald and Judith Barker, Loudon, TN, her granddaughters Janet and Sean Willcox, Denver, CO, Jill Barker and Ray Fowler, Naperville, IL, three great-grandchildren, Nichole Willcox, Geoffrey Willcox, and Stephen Gutka.
She was preceded in death by her son John Vernon Barker, her brother Austin Alfrey, and three sisters, Virginia Kellner, Nell Phillips and Phyllis Alfrey.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 12, 2007 at the Mark A. Schneider Funeral Home, Crestline, with Pastor Fred Bleck officiating. Burial followed in Greenlawn Cemetery, Crestline.
Memorial contributions may be made to Gospel Baptist Church or the Alzheimer’s Assoc. in care of the funeral home.
Christine Davis Black Combs
1925-2007
MOREHEAD - Christine Davis Black Combs, age 81, of Clearfield Street, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead. She was born June 7, 1925, in Rowan County, Kentucky, and was the daughter of the late Felix and Nannie Charles Davis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, George D. Black and Ova Combs.
She is survived by one son, George D. Black of Morehead, Kentucky; two brothers, Bob Davis and Chalmer Davis, both of Morehead, Kentucky; three sisters, Faye Pelfrey and Ethel Caskey of Morehead, Kentucky, and Elsie Lewis of Virginia; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Mrs. Combs was a former employee of A & P Grocery Company in Hamilton, Ohio, and was a member of Jesus Our Savior Catholic Church.
Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, April 12, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Deacon Bill Buelterman officiating. Burial was in New Alfrey Cemetery.
Visitation was Wednesday, April 11, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.
Reverend Dr. William M. Hawkins
1942-2007
LEXINGTON - Reverend Dr. William M. Hawkins, Poet, Composer, and Minister died Tuesday, April 10, 2007 at UK Medical Center. Born May 14, 1942, a native of Switzer, Kentucky he graduated from Franklin County High School in 1960. He played tuba for Georgetown College and graduated with a degree in music education. After teaching music for several years, he graduated with a master of divinity and doctorate of ministry from Lexington Theological Seminary. A minister since 1969, Hawkins retired as pastor of Clintonville Christian Church in 2004. As a Disciple of Christ minister, he served churches in Burgin, Dawson Springs, Owingsville, Nicholasville Lancaster and Flint, MI. He was active in many interfaith and equal rights groups. Serving as the chair of Christian Unity Commission, he initiated the first Thanksgiving service that included members of several faiths including Jews, Muslims, Baha’is, Hindus, and Christians in Flint Michigan in 1990. Dr. Hawkins wrote a plethora of music compositions and arrangements for high school bands, men’s chorus, church choirs, and men’s trio. The premiere of his symphony “Symphony of the Soul” was performed by the Lexington Community Orchestra in February 2004.
He is survived by his wife, Julia Schombur Hawkins, mother Sibyl Poe Hawkins, sister, Peggy Hawkins Moore (Sonny), children: Cindy Hawkins Cyrus, Randy Hawkins(Betty), Kim Hawkins (Arlene), Patrick Hawkins (Shannon), and Joe McGovern. Grandchildren: Megan, Brittany, Chandler, Elizabeth, Colby, Peyton, and Christian. Special friends: Jennifer Weber and Kasey.
He is preceded in death by his father William Linden Hawkins, sons, K. Michael McGovern, and Steven McGovern.
Memorial service will be held Saturday, April 14, 2007 at First Christian Church Morehead, KY at 11:00a.m. Officiating are Rev. Dr. William B. Kincaid III and Rev. J. Gregory Alexander. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge 1500 College Way, Lexington, KY 40502.
Quinton K. Jones
Quinton K. Jones, 65, of Charleston, West Virginia formerly of Rowan County, passed away Wednesday evening at the home of his daughter in Charleston.
He was the son of the late Walter and Rosa McDaniel Jones.

Virginia Omega Fannin Lambert
1940-2007
MOREHEAD - Virginia Omega Fannin Lambert, age 67, of Dark Hollow Road, Clearfield, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2007, at her residence after a brief illness. She was born February 29, 1940, in Elliott County, Kentucky, to the late Clell and Nancy Simmons Fannin. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Marissa Dawn Lambert May, on April 12, 1994.
She is survived by her husband, Edward Eugene Lambert, whom she married
July 21, 1963; nine daughters, Ruby Campbell and Crystal Roe, both of Clearfield, Kentucky, Vanessa Gilliam, Melissa Warren, Jessica May, and Stephanie Thompson, all of Morehead, Kentucky, Madge Earles of Urban, Ohio, Gail Ianni of West Land, Michigan, and Karen Brown of Belleville, Michigan; two sons, Wayne Lambert and Donnie Lambert, both of Clearfield, Kentucky; 31 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.
Also surviving are three brothers, Herman Fannin of Sandy Hook, Kentucky, Paul Fannin of Spring Lake, North Carolina, and Harold Fannin of Morehead, Kentucky; four sisters, Ruby Dixon of Springfield, Ohio, Madge Nantz, Nancy Cooley and Clara Taylor, all of Morehead, Kentucky, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Lambert was a former employee of the Dairy Mart, Holiday Inn, and Cowdens Mfg. Company. She was a member of the House of Prayer.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, April 13, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Tim Storm officiating. Burial will follow in Clearfield Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Robert Hall, Delmar Hall, Ronnie Fannin, Ryan Williams, Mike Cooley, and Ben Schumaker. Honorary pallbearers will be Grandsons Ethan Lambert, Derek Fannin, Shane Henderson, Adam Henderson, Todd Pennington, Anthony Thompson, Cody Roe, Zachary Thompson, and Jason Wright.

Hazel Madgeline Gilliam Smoot
1924-2007
MOREHEAD - Hazel Madgeline Gilliam Smoot, age 82, of Greenville School Road, Greenville, Virginia, passed away Sunday, April 8, 2007, at her residence. Born May 19, 1924, in Carter County, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Green and Cora Waddell Gilliam. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Ottis Gilliam. Her husband, Ivory Smoot, passed away March 18, 2003.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Darby Michael and Kathy Smoot of Greenville, Virginia; one daughter and son-in-law, Gwendolyn and Robert Clark Necessary of Davin, West Virginia; two grandchildren, Jill Necessary and Devin Smoot; two brothers, Ray Gilliam and Michael Gilliam, both of Morehead, Kentucky; one sister, Freda Cartwright of Morehead, Kentucky, and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Smoot was a homemaker and a member of the Brinegar Church.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, April 13, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Brother Don Rivers officiating. Burial will be in the Manning Chapel Cemetery in Carter County, Kentucky. Serving as pallbearers are David Gilliam, Paul Gilliam, Danny Ray Gilliam, Vaughn Gilliam, Jim Barker, and Willard Calvert.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Thursday, April 12, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.
Larry Johnson
1949 - 2007
MOREHEAD – Larry Johnson, 57, passed away Saturday, June 30, 2007 in the Life Care Center after an extended illness.
He was born on December 16, 1949 in Carter County, Kentucky, a son of the late Jess and Jettie Johnson.
Larry had been a resident of Life Care Center for over 20 years. He enjoyed his family and friends, playing checkers and bingo and going to Morehead State University to watch ballgames and concerts.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a half-brother, Keith Johnson.
Survivors include his twin brother, Gary Johnson of Elliottville, half-brothers, Jess Johnson, Jr. and his wife, Jeanetta, Wayne Johnson, Justin Johnson and Jerome Johnson all of Morehead and Mark Johnson and his wife, Kathy of Olive Hill, half-sisters, Debbie Johnson and Connie Rayburn and her husband, Barry all of Olive Hill and Sherri Legare and her husband, Larry of Glasgow, Montana, two uncles, Damon Johnson of Elliottville and Tony Johnson of Dayton, Ohio, a special friend, Ted Marshall of Morehead and several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Graveside services and burial were conducted at 2:00 P.M. Monday, July 2, 2007 at the Johnson Family Cemetery in Elliottville with Rev. David Starcher officiating.
Pallbearers were family and friends.
Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home cared for all arrangements.
