Carolyn Sue Brown Johnston
SHELBYVILLE - Carolyn Sue Brown Johnston, 56, died Friday, Feb. 9 at Shelbyville.
She was born in Morgan County and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hershel Brown and Geraldine Perry Brown.
She is survived by her husband, Perry Johnston of Shelbyville; sons, Anthony Neal Johnston of Statesville, N.C. and Ryan O’Neal Johnston of Breckenridge County; brothers, Jimmy Brown of Lexington, Robert Brown of Corinth, Jerry Brown of Lancaster and Keith Brown of Georgetown; one sister, Donna Montgomery of Salt Lick.
The family is planning a memorial service for a later date.
The Shannon Funeral Service of Shelbyville was in charge of arrangements.
Shirley Doris Ashley Prater
1940 - 2007
MT. STERLING - Shirley Doris Ashley Prater, 66, of Mt. Sterling, died Feb. 5 at her home.
Born Sept. 23, 1940 in Perry County, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Geneva Day Ashley. She was co-owner of Prater Furniture, a Wal-Mart employee, and member of the Jeffersonville Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include her husband E. Thornton Rater of Mt. Sterling; a son, Elzie Prater of Mt Sterling; three daughters, Judy Watkins, Tina Lawson and Donna Walters, all of Mt. Sterling; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joann Adrion of Phoenix. Ariz., and Karen Ashley of Morehead; three brothers, Chuck, Mike and Billy Ashley, all of Morehead; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter Tammy Watkins.
Services were held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, at the Jeffersonville Assembly of God Church with Pastor Robbie Conn officiating. Burial was in the Prater-Watkins Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Shawn Walters, Keith, Jamie, Junior and Casper Lawson, Jason and Dale Prater. Honorary pallbearers were Danny Watkins, Tommy Crowe, Bill Carpenter; Mike and Lynn Prater.
Herald and Stewart Home for Funerals was in charge of arrangements.
Edna Yvonne Wilson Staggs
1934-2007
MOREHEAD - Edna Yvonne Wilson Staggs, age 72, of Justin Drive, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, February 10, 2007, at Ridgeway Nursing and Rehabilitation in Owingsville, Kentucky. Born April 16, 1934, in Rowan County, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Ottis Wilson and Arizona Black Wilson. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Roger Allen Wilson; two brothers, John Paul Wilson and Fred Wilson; and six sisters, Angie Wilson, Judy Click, Thelma Barricks, Eva Rush, Margaret Wilson, and Tootsie Wilson.
She is survived by three sons, Timothy Wilson of Georgetown, Kentucky, Gary Webb of Glasgow, Kentucky and Tommy Webb of Tompkinsville, Kentucky; four daughters, Lynda Wilson and Rhonda Armstrong, both of Morehead, Kentucky, Kathy Lunsford of Georgetown, Kentucky, and Lou Ann Walker of Glasgow, Kentucky; one brother, Ottis Wilson, Jr. of Tennessee, and two sisters, Anna Henderson and Patsy McClurg, both of Ohio; a host of grandchildren; and one great grandson.
Mrs. Staggs was a homemaker.

Violet D. Johnson
1930-2007
HOWE - Violet Deloris Johnson, 77, of Howe, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, July 12, 2007 while at home with her family around her.
She was born June 30, 1930 in Sharkey, KY to Fred and Edith Hicks. On April 23, 1947, she married
Bennie O. Johnson. He passed away Feb. 15, 2004.
A homemaker most of her life, she retired from Lakeland School Corporation in 1998, where she was a custodian for 13 years. She enjoyed going to church, singing, reading, quilting, gardening, canning and cooking for her family and friends. She was a faithful member of the Salem United Baptist Church in Rome City.
She was a loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother, with a genuine caring, loving heart; she had open arms ready to embrace all, and her expressions of strong faith and godly wisdom will forever be in our hearts.
Surviving are five daughters and four sons-in-law, Evelyn Reddick of Yuma, AZ; Carolene and Glen Jackson, Diane and Porter Bowdish and Robin and Chad Tuttle, all of Howe; and Edwina and Art Myers of Montgomery, MI; a son and daughter-in-law, Bennie A. and Debra Johnson of Howe; one sister, June Cooper of Versailles, KY; one brother, Scottie Hicks of Owingsville, KY; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one grandson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, at Salem United Baptist Church, Rome City, with the Rev. Glen A. Jackson, the Rev. Billy R. Tuttle, the Rev. Elmer Slone and the Rev. Tony Sparkman officiating. Burial will be in Ontario Cemetery at Howe.
Calling will be from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Frurip-May Funeral Home in LaGrange and beginning at 4 p.m. Monday at the church, with a service at 6 p.m.
Claude Adkins
1939-2007
MOREHEAD - Claude Adkins, age 67, of Valley Road, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2007, at his residence. He was born October 22, 1939, in Elliott County, Kentucky, and was the son of the late Dona and Lula Gibbs Adkins. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Ivory Keeton
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Vivian Mae Hitch Adkins; two daughters, Brenda Parker and husband Jeff and Linda Skaggs, one son, Claude Gregory Adkins; one grandson, Joshua Parker and one granddaughter, Sarah Parker, all of Morehead, Kentucky.
Other survivors include one sister, Elva Dean Prater and her husband Billy of Sandy Hook, Kentucky; four brothers, J. C. Adkins and wife Della of Sandy Hook, Kentucky, Emory Adkins and wife Linda of Springfield, Ohio, Dona Adkins, Jr. and wife Madeline of Sandy Hook, Kentucky, and Eugene Adkins of Sandy Hook, Kentucky. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Claude was a former employee of Larry’s Marina and a retired self-employed marine mechanic.
He served his country in the U.S. Army for seven years during the Vietnam War Era. He was a member of the House of Prayer.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, July 13, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Winston McClurg, Rev. Eugene Haney and the Rev. Carl Griggs officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens with full military rites conducted at the graveside by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Parker, Joshua Parker, Bucky Keeton, Darrel Hitch, Paul Prince, and Robbie Strausbaugh. Visitation is after 5 p.m. Thursday, July 12, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.
Mignon Louise McClain Doran
1910-2007
MOREHEAD - Mignon Louise McClain Doran, age 96, died of congestive heart failure on Tuesday, July 10, 2007, in Lexington, Kentucky.
She was born on December 13, 1910, in Sedalia, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Oliver Perry and Emily Jane Lassiter McClain. She attended high school in Sedalia and continued her education at Murray State University and New York University. She holds an honorary doctorate degree in Humanities from Morehead State University and was an honorary member of Chi Omega sorority.
When her late husband, Dr. Adron Doran, became president of Morehead State College in 1954, Mrs. Doran quickly joined him in turning the college into a comprehensive regional university. She founded the Personal Development Institute where she taught students to improve their social skills and become successful in their professional lives. She also established the Cosmopolitan Club and became a statewide speaker at high schools throughout eastern Kentucky recruiting students to attend college in Morehead. She also taught classes in the prison system in Ashland, Kentucky, and taught a class on Kentucky Educational Television called “Dimensions of Personality.”
An accomplished musician, Mrs. Doran has played the organ for more than 85 years, giving benefit concerts throughout Kentucky. For 20 years she played at the Kentucky Boys’ Basketball Tournament and also at the Morehead basketball team’s “at home” games. She has performed at “The Woodland’s Musicale, ” which she founded, for the past 21 years. While first lady of Morehead State University, she had a radio show for 10 years called, “Tea Time with Mignon, ” where she played organ music and interviewed campus leaders and visitors.
She was once named one of the best hatted women in America and was known for this trademark. Her other achievements include being named Outstanding Kentucky Woman by the Young Democrats, Cardinal Key National Honor Sorority Woman of the Year, former president of the Kentucky Federation of Women’s Clubs, member of the Governor’s Commission on the Status of Women, and a charter member of the Kentucky Commission on Registry and Finance. She has a residence hall complex named for her on the Morehead Campus.
A member of the North Lexington Church of Christ, Mrs. Doran was a much sought after speaker for women of the church. She frequently spoke on the value of A Valiant Woman.
A sister, Eva McClain Wyatt, and two brothers, Ralph Lassiter McClain and E. W. McClain, preceded her in death. A niece, Troy Wyatt Burgess, Morehead, two nephews, Dr. George Wyatt, Union, Kentucky, and Joseph McClain, Paris, Kentucky, five great nephews and three great nieces survive her. She also leaves a host of friends who admired her for her wisdom and grace.
Visitation will be held in Morehead at the Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals on Thursday, July 12, 2007, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Milward Southland Funeral Home on Friday, July 13, 2007, at 2:30 p.m. with Brother Steve Johnson officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted on Saturday, July 14, 2007, at Highland Park Cemetery, Mayfield, Kentucky, at 1 p.m. CST with Dr. Harvey Lynn Elder officiating.
