Rev. Leonard W. (Bucky) Snyder
MOREHEAD - Rev. Leonard W. (Bucky) Snyder, Morehead, Kentucky, husband of Betty Lewis Snyder, passed away Tuesday, September 4, 2007, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.
Born in South Charleston, West Virginia, Rev. Snyder was a minister of the Church of God for more than fifty years. He graduated from Anderson University, Anderson, IN, and did post-graduate work at Cincinnati Bible Seminary, Cincinnati, OH, and Queens College, Charlotte, NC. He was the recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Divinity from Warner Southern College, Lake Wales, FL.
Rev. Snyder’s ministry spanned more than five decades and several continents. He pastored churches in Charlotte, NC, and Hamilton, OH, and served as interim pastor in Oklahoma City, OK, and London, OH. He also had preaching assignments in Brazil, Peru, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Argentina and was the leader of numerous missions/work trips to Central and South America. He was the Director of Ohio Ministries of the Church of God for five years and had been the Minister-in-Residence at the Anderson School of Theology. Additionally, Rev. Snyder had served in numerous leadership positions in the Church of God at the national, state, and district levels.
In addition to his wife Betty Lewis Snyder, he is survived by daughter, Karen F. Snyder of Lexington, KY; son John and Amy Snyder and grandchildren Casey Jo and Abby Snyder, all of Fairfield, Ohio; the Lewis children and grandchildren Steve, Jan, Sarah and Rebecca Lewis of Morehead, KY; Mark, Kay, Ryan, Jenni, Brandon, and Megan Lewis of Morehead, KY; brother Bill and Frances Snyder of South Charleston, WV; nephews Randy Snyder of Winfield, WV and Rod Snyder of Morgantown, WV; and niece Robyn Eckley of Woodbridge, VA.
Visitation was from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, September 6, 2006, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel. A service was conducted at 6 p.m. with Pastor Allan Hutchinson and Dr. Jack Ellis officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, September 7, 2007, at the First Church of God, Hamilton, OH and Saturday, September 8, 2007, from 9 a.m. until the funeral service at 11 a.m. Entombment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hamilton, OH.

Donald Stone
1915-2007
MOREHEAD - Donald Stone, age 92, of Bartlett Drive, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Monday, September 3, 2007, at the Life Care Center in Morehead.
Born March 15, 1915, in Lewis County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late John Edward and Lucinda Cooper Stone. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, David Stone, in 1974.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years and nine months, Bessie Florence Sloan Stone; two daughters, Jeanette Stone of Morehead, Kentucky, and Lou Ella Lowe of Lexington; six grandchildren, Steve Stone, Mark Lowe, Deborah Walker, Jennifer Tolliver, Tim Lowe, and Daphne Stone; nine great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.
Mr. Stone was an employee of Wright’s Aeronautical Corporation in Cincinnati, Ohio, during World War II from 1942-45 and was the owner and operator of Stone’s Auto Parts in Morehead for many years.
He was a member of the First Church of God where he was a former usher, member of the men of the Church of God, and Board of Trustees.
Funeral services were conducted 1:30 p.m. Thursday, September 6, 2007, at the Morehead First Church of God with Pastor Allan Hutchinson and Dr. John Conley officiating. Burial was in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Mark Lowe, Steve Stone, Bill Tolliver, Tim Lowe, Trevor Stone, and Ben Tackett..
Visitation was Wednesday, September 5, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.
Pauline Sparks Sturgill
1922-2007
MOREHEAD - Pauline Sparks Sturgill, age 84, of U.S. 60 East, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, September 2, 2007, at the Life Care Center in Morehead.
She was born November 21, 1922, at Little Perry in Rowan County, Kentucky, and was the daughter of the late Charles Alfred and Amelia Fletcher Sparks. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Marie Nickols, and three brothers, Ruben Adams, Virgil Sparks, and Elmer Sparks.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Wayne Lewis Sturgill; one son, Ralph Sturgill; three sisters, Edith Reeder of Morehead, Kentucky, Edna McKinney of Roanoke, Virginia, and Fay Littleton of Carlisle, Ohio; one brother, Ivan Sparks of Richmond, Indiana.
Mrs. Sturgill was a homemaker who enjoyed her flowers and all animals, especially her dog Pokey. She loved the Lord and was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church.
Funeral services were conducted 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 5, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Elder Deward Hall officiating. Burial was in the New Sill Cemetery.
Visitation was after 5 p.m. Tuesday, September 4, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.
Robert Eugene “Robbie” Watson,
1969-2007
MOREHEAD - Robert Eugene “Robbie” Watson, age 38, of West Third Street, Maysville, passed away Saturday, September 1, 2007, at the U. K. Medical Center in Lexington.
Born August 26, 1969, in Rowan County, Kentucky, he is the son of J. R. Watson and his wife Linda of Morehead and Patricia Moore Purdon and her husband Edward of Maysville.
Other survivors include his fiancée, Debra Lorraine Batten of Maysville; his paternal grandfather, Lawrence Watson of Morehead; five brothers, Brian Edward and Tina Purdon of Tacoma, Washington, Martin Ray and Tammy Purdon of Foxport, James Matthew and Tracy Purdon of Maysville, Brandon Isaac Purdon of Maysville, Samuel and Julia Purdon of Maysville; and six sisters, Stephanie Watson of Alexandria, Buffy Jo Purdon of Joplin, Missouri, Nancy Elizabeth Herrea of Montebello, California, Sheryl Purdon of Maysville, Mary Leighann Purdon of Maysville, and Kimberly Dawn Watson of Jacksonville, Florida. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Robbie was a graduate of Manchester High School in West Union, Ohio, and Bert Combs Vocational College in Paintsville, and had attended Maysville Community College. He was a member of Happy Hollow Union Church in Tollesboro.
Visitation was 5 p.m. Tuesday, September 4, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead and from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 5, 2007, at Brell Funeral Home in Maysville.
A funeral service was conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 5, 2007, at the Brell Funeral Home in Maysville with the Rev. Willie Sturgill officiating. Burial was in the Maysville Cemetery. Pallbearers were Robbie’s five brothers and Mike Wilson and Ray Polley.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the Women’s Crisis Center, 1100 E. Third Street, Maysville, KY 41056.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.
Betty Jean Wells
1924-2007
WEST LIBERTY – Betty Jean Wells, 83, died peacefully at her home on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007 after a long illness.
Betty was born Feb. 2, 1924 at Eustis, Fla. She was the daughter of James Blaine and Gertrude Dondanville Nickell, and grew up in West Liberty, in the hills of Eastern Kentucky.
She received her education at Transylvania College and Morehead State University. She was professor of English at CVCC from 1968 until her retirement in 1989. Prior to moving to Lynchburg, she taught at Morehead State University and Palm Beach Junior College in Florida.
Betty was active in her retirement, working with the Red Cross and Meals on Wheels. She was an active member and past elder of Covenant Presbyterian Church where she helped establish a lending library.
Betty’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by two brothers, Merle Nickell (Gerleen) and Lynn Nickell (Leatha Neil), both of West Liberty; four children, Margaret Lynn Butcher (David M.) of Oxford, Ohio, James Ray Wells (Cathy) of Red Bush, Ky., J. David Wells and Robbie Wells (Marsha) of Lynchburg; 11 grandchildren, Bennett Paige Coleman, Charles David Butcher, Rebecca Blaine Butcher, Terence Ian Wells, Jesse Ray Wells, Miranda Jane Woodall, Carrie Jean Wells, Michael Ray Wells, Richard Blaine Wells, Corey Blaine Wells and Jesse Owen Wells; and eight great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 108 Melinda Drive, Lynchburg.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am. Friday, Sept. 7 at Covenant Presbyterian Church.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17 at the Lexington Cemetery, 833 W. Main Street, Lexington.

James Westerman, Sr.
1947-2007
MOREHEAD - James Westerman, Sr., age 60, of Farley Road, Salt Lick, Kentucky, passed away Monday, September 3, 2007, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead, Kentucky.
Born July 18, 1947, in Dover, Tennessee, he was the son of the late Orin and Ivy Tift Westerman. He is survived by three sons, James Westerman, Jr., of Morehead, Kentucky, Matthew Westerman of Salt Lick, Kentucky, Timmy Westerman of Auburn, Kentucky; three brothers, David Westerman and Charles Westerman, both of Trenton, Kentucky, and Freddy Westerman of Elkton, Kentucky; two sisters, Brenda Arms of Woodlawn, Tennessee, and Judy Reeding of Guthrie, Kentucky; twelve grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Mr. Westerman was a former cabinet shop employee and dairy farmer.
Graveside services will be conducted 11:30 a.m. Saturday, September 8, 2007, at the Highland Cemetery, in Guthrie, Kentucky, with Brother Jimmy Jackson officiating.
