Tony Riley
1919-2009
SHELBYVILLE - Tony E. Riley, 89, of Shelbyville passed away Sunday, May 17, 2009 at Heritage House in Shelbyville. He was born September 4, 1919 in Lewis County, Kentucky the son of the late Jack W. and Mary Jane (Richmond) Riley.
Tony was an Army veteran of World War II where he served as a medical technician. An avid gardener and woodworker, he was definitely known for being a hard worker and was very passionate about his garden. He attended the Carthage Church of the Nazarene.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years: Olive (Spence) Riley of Shelbyville; a daughter: Janice Clark of Indianapolis; two grandsons: Rodney (wife: Terri) Fannin of CO and Boyd (wife: Jami) Fannin of Beech Grove; four great grandchildren: Clay, Wyatt, Garrett and Baileigh Fannin; two step great grandchildren: Hannah and Dalton Perry; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters.
Services will be at 2:00 PM Friday, May 22, 2009 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel with Pastor Verlin Chip officiating. Military rites will be conducted. Lola Slone Tackett
1938-2009
MOREHEAD – Lola Slone Tackett, 70, of U.S. 60 East, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at her home after an illness of several months.
She was born on June 25, 1938 in Morgan County, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Luther and Artie Perry Stamper.
Mrs. Tackett was a homemaker. She was a member of the Church of God and enjoyed gardening and working in her flowers.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Harlan Eugene Stamper and a nephew, Mark John Symsick.
Survivors include her husband, Glenn Tackett of Morehead, one daughter, Katherine Leach of Morehead, two sisters, Mary Morr of Mansfield, Ohio and Alice Conley of Morehead, three grandchildren, Gretchen Fraley and her husband, Mark and Robert Shane Goodpaster all of Morehead and Tonya Gail Goodpaster of Frenchburg, five great-grandchildren, Nathan Fraley, Amanda Jo Howard, MacKyla Fraley, Nikota Goodpaster and Katelyn Goodpaster, two nieces, Rhonda Symsick, Toni Moore, one nephew, William Michael Conley, one great-niece, Star Ernest, one great-nephew, Gage Ernest, close friend, Maryetta Maze and several cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Friday, May 22, 2009 in the chapel of the Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home with Rev. Harley Sexton, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Brown Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be William Michael Conley, Marvin Ratliff, Lonnie Plank, Jeff French, Robert Shane Goodpaster and Josh Sorrell.
Samuel Whitson
1925-2009
CALIF. - Samuel Montgomery Whitson, former Sociology Professor at Morehead State University, passed away in Lakewood, California.
He was born March 13, 1925 in Nashville, Tennesee to SM and Nettie Whitson. He graduated from Abilene Christian University with a Bachelors Degree, where he met his future wife, Patsy. They were married
August 29, 1950. Mont went onto receive a PhD from Texas A&M.; Mont taught at Pepperdine University in California and then went to Morehead State University where he taught from 1970 until he retired in 1993.
Mont is survived by his loving wife, Patsy, of 58 years; his four children – Steve Whitson, of Long Beach California; Susan Majd, of Palm Desert, California; Liz McKinley, of Houston, Texas; and Kathy Gwinn, of Matthews, North Carolina; one sister and two brothers; and his eight wonderful grandchildren – Jayson McKinley, Beau Whitson, Samantha Gwinn, Tyler Gwinn, Patrick McKinley, Emma Whitson, Adam Whitson, and Justin McKinley.
Mont was an active member of the Church of Christ of which he served as an Elder at the church in Morehead for a number of years. He was strongly committed to the Democratic party and supported it in numerous ways. He loved playing racquetball and watching sports. He was a poet and an artist. He loved to read and stay current on current events.
Mont will be missed.. A memorial service will be held in Nashville, Tennessee.
Melissa Rush May
1966-2009
TENN. - Melissa Rush May, age 43, of Greenbriar, Tennessee, passed away April 12, 2009 at her home after a long battle with cancer. Funeral services were held April 15, 2009 at Rock Springs Baptist Church in Greenbriar with Brother Frank Evans officiating. Burial was in the Hermitage Memorial Gardens in Hermitage, Tennessee. Melissa is survived by her husband Dan May, formerly of Morehead, sons Bryan May and Nick May of Greenbriar, her mother Janice Gillihan, and a sister, Teresa Raines of Fairview, Tennessee.
Ethel Mae Fannin Owsley
1921-2009
MOREHEAD – Ethel Mae Fannin Owsley, age 88, of Pennington Flat Road, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, May 28, 2009, at the St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.
Born February 7, 1921, in Sandy Hook, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late William Claude and Florene Duvall Fannin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, William Claude Fannin, Jr.; two sisters, Kathleen Booth and Faye Lewis; and a half-brother, Henry Fannin.
She is survived by a half-brother, Franklin Fauneil (Neal) Fannin of Lexington, Kentucky, and six half-sisters, Alice Eiden of Leitchfield, Kentucky, Nell Damaree of Lexington, Kentucky, Ida Roberts of Guernsey, Ohio, Mary Thornburg of Mt. Summit, Indiana, Kay Lewis of Morehead, Kentucky, and Amanda Fannin of Santa Cruz, California.
Other survivors include two special nephews, Bill Fannin and Michael Fannin, both of Morehead, Kentucky; one niece, Joan Sergent of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky; and several great nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Owsley was a seamstress and an avid doll collector. She was a member of the Morehead United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, May 31, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Nettleton officiating. Burial was in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was 6 p.m. Saturday, May 30, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.
Sharon Gregory Skinner
1971-2009
MOREHEAD – Sharon Gregory Skinner, age 38, of North Wilson Avenue, Morehead, Kentucky, wife of Patrick Skinner, aeromedical pilot for P.H.I., passed away Monday, June 1, 2009, at her residence after a seven-month battle with cancer.
Born March 11, 1971, in New Prague, Minnesota, Sharon is the daughter of Walter and Carol Kopoitzke Gregory of Slayton, Minnesota.
Sharon and Patrick were married
on November 25, 1995, and are the parents of five children, all at home: Elizabeth, Luke, Grace, John Paul, and Andrew.
Other survivors include one brother, Walter Gregory, Jr. of Marshall, Minnesota; one sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Craig Morris of Chaska, Minnesota; and two nephews, Eric Schmidt and Kyle Morris.
Sharon graduated from Slayton High School in Minnesota and attended Huron University in South Dakota. She and Patrick relocated with P.H.I. to Morehead from Madisonville, Kentucky, three years ago. A devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, and aunt, Sharon enjoyed living life to the fullest. She loved her children unconditionally and was instrumental in their educational development by homeschooling them. A devout lifelong member of the Catholic faith, she was a member of Jesus Our Savior Catholic Church.
A service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at Jesus Our Savior Catholic Church with the Rev. Paul Prabell officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Jordan, Minnesota.
Pallbearers will be Steve Marcus, Mike Orr, Nick Hammonds, Gregg Gullett, Billy Marsh, and Gregg Gray.
Visitation for Sharon Skinner is after 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals. A Rosary Service will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.
Gloria (Jeanie) Davis Johnston
1946-2009
MOREHEAD - Gloria (Jeanie) Davis Johnston, age 62, of Shenkel Lane, Frankfort, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, June 7, 2009, at her residence.
Born December 30, 1946, in Carter County, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Harlan Luther and Clara Lee Brewster Davis. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Ima Jean and Ernestine Davis and Opal Easton; two brothers, Harold and Hubert Davis; and one son, Marion Luther Lewis.
She is survived by three sons, Darrell Wayne Lewis and his wife Faye, Mark Lewis, and Timothy Lewis, all of Frankfort, Kentucky; four daughters, Lora Smith and husband Donald, Anna Smith, Juanita Crouch and husband Pete, and Tammy Bailey, all of Frankfort, Kentucky; 19 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.
Also surviving are four brothers and their wives, Bobby and Mary Davis and Logan and Betty Davis of Morehead, Kentucky, Tommy and Zella Davis of Olive Hill, Kentucky, Harlen and Barb Davis of Sandy Hook, Kentucky; one sister and her husband, Marie and David Whitt of Morehead, Kentucky; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Jeanie was a Christian for many years. Her life revolved around family and church and she will be greatly missed by all.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Brother Lonnie Conn, Brother Wade Hughes, and Brother Bobby Day officiating. Burial will follow in the Manning Chapel Cemetery in Carter County.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.
Alma Aurora Johnson Robertson
1921-2009
MOREHEAD – Alma Aurora Johnson Robertson, 87, passed away Saturday, June 6, 2009, at Windsor Care in Mt. Sterling, KY.
Born December 8, 1921, in New Haven, CT, she traveled widely with her husband until his retirement from the military. She was employed at Independent Gravel and was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Joplin, MO, for many years, and later of Grace Lutheran Church in Winchester, KY.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Robert Cedric Robertson, and two sisters, Lillian Olsen of West Haven, CT, and Elizabeth Levin of Overton, TX.
Mrs. Robertson is survived by a son, James E. Robertson and his wife Kathleen, of St. Louis, MO; a daughter, Sarah R. Morrison and her husband Ronald of Morehead, KY; three grandchildren, Gwen Jankowski and her husband Ben, of Stillwater, OK, Victoria Robertson of Tucson, AZ, and Robert Leavitt Morrison of Morehead, KY.
Private graveside services will be held at Sardis Cemetery. Arrangements are with Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.
