David McArthur Steagall
1942-2008

MOREHEAD – David McArthur Steagall, 66, of Jeffersonville, Kentucky formerly of Morehead passed away Monday, May 26, 2008 in the St. Joseph Hospital – Mt. Sterling after suffering an apparent heart attack.

He was born on March 18, 1942 in Rowan County, Kentucky, a son of the late Leonard and Minnie Tackett Steagall.

Mr. Steagall was a logger. He was of the Baptist Faith and enjoyed spending time with his family, especially with his kids and grandkids.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Allen Stegall, Abel Steagall, Arlie Steagall, Elijah Steagall, Cecil Raymond “Pete” Steagall and James Alfred Steagall, his half brother, Ernest Steagall and two sisters, Lena Mae Steagall and Marie Steagall.

Survivors include his wife, Vonda Blevins Steagall of Jeffersonville, one son, David George Steagall of Delta, Ohio, one step-son, Paul Steven Jackson of Georgia, four daughters, Donna Sue Morris of Fountain, Colorado, Robin Lee Fultz of Owingsville, Bobbie Jo Peyton of West Liberty and Nancy Sue Steagall of Wallingford, three step-daughters, Melissa Ann Hughes of Lexington, Crystal Gayle Herndon of Charlottesville, Virginia and Jennifer Lynn Herndon of Jeffersonville, two brothers, Harlan Steagall of Buffalo, Indiana and Leonard “Buck” Steagall of Morehead, one sister, Rosie Weaver of Morehead, eighteen grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, May 31, 2008 in the chapel of the Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home with Rev. Elijah Tackett and Rev. Jeff Fannin officiating. Burial will follow in the Caudill Cemetery at Cranston. Visitation is after 6:00 P.M. Thursday and after 3:00 P.M. Friday.

Pallbearers will be David Steagall, Mike LaPorte, Steven Puckett, Waylon Steagall, Todd Smith, Tony Steagall, Chris Steagall and Cody Peyton.

Jackie Black
1934-2008

WEST LIBERTY - Jackie Black, age 74 of 9489 Hwy 7 in West Liberty, Kentucky passed away Saturday May 17, 2008 in the St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead, Kentucky after a brief illness.

He was born April 20, 1934 in Morgan County, Kentucky; Son of the late Victor & Rose Litteral Black.

He was a United States Army Veteran and a retired Maintenance Worker for Morehead State University in Morehead, Kentucky.

He was preceded in death by his Parents; Victor Black & Rose Litteral Black; 2 Brothers; Charles & Clarence Black and a stepson; Jackie Lee Kidd.

Surviving is his wife; Eleanor Wilson Black of West Liberty, Kentucky, Five Children; Patty Funk and Jackie Lynn Black both of Lexington, Kentucky; Jeanie Perna of Florida; Rosie Black of Lexington, Kentucky and Angela Black Cox of West Liberty, Kentucky; Three Step-Children; Tony & Janie Kidd of Morehead, Kentucky; Tammy & Doug Williams of West Liberty, Kentucky and Loretta & Brownie Stamper of Morehead, Kentucky; One Brother; Billy Black and Helen of Lexington, Kentucky; Sixteen grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be conducted Tuesday 1:00 PM May 20, 2008 at Herald & Stewart & Halsey Chapel with Rev. Harry Flannery officiating. Interment will follow with burial in the Easterling Cemetery, Lacy Creek, Kentucky.

Pallbearers: Friends & Relatives.

Charlie D. Harris
1944-2008

MOREHEAD - Charlie D. Harris, age 64, of Fannin Road, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Friday, May 16, 2008, at the St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.

Born February 29, 1944, in Elliott County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Chester and Martha Vesta Catron Harris. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Thelma Horton Harris, in 1999, and one brother, Talmadge Harris.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Sue Bently Fannin Harris; two daughters and sons-in-law, Rebecca and Tom Haas of Wylie, Texas, and Dr. Beverly Renee and Aric Porter of Lexington, Kentucky; the Fannin children and their spouses, Timothy and Pam Fannin, of Sandy Hook, Kentucky, Richard and Dolly Fannin of Morehead, Kentucky, and Deirdre and Gary Druin of Rosine, Kentucky.

Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Alicia Haas, Beau Porter, Allie Druin, Allison Druin, Ryan, Matthew, Logan, and Evan Fannin, and three brothers, Elwood Harris of Frankfort, Kentucky, Raymond Harris of Olive Hill, Kentucky, and Chester Harris, Jr., of Sandy Hook, Kentucky.

Charlie graduated from Sandy Hook High School and, except for a few years he spent at Ford Motor Company in Detroit, Michigan, he lived in Elliott County until he and Sue married eight years ago and he moved to Rowan County.

Charlie was an agent for Commonwealth Life Insurance and for 27 years directed the federally funded program, EXCEP, that provided educational grants for students at vocational and technical colleges. Following retirement, he was a part-time employee at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.

Always a farmer and cattleman, Charlie was very active with the Rowan County Extension Services. He was a former member of the Rowan County Extension Advisory Board and a longtime member of the Eastern Foothills Cattlemen’s Association.

He was a member of the Morehead First Church of God.

Funeral services was Monday, May 19, 2008, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Allan Hutchinson and the Rev. Bill Bently officiating. Entombment was at the Harris Family Mausoleum in Brown Cemetery.

Pallbearers: Junior Harris, Wayne Black, Sam Bowman, Aubrey Little, Bob Marsh and Clifford Porter.

Visitation was Saturday, May 17, 2008, and Sunday, May 18, 2008, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the Morehead First Church of God or Rowan County Christian Academy, c/o Morehead First Church of God, 676 Sunset Lane, Morehead, KY 40351.

Maxie Adams Riley
1917-2008

FLATWOODS – Maxie Adams Riley, 91, of Oakmont Manor, Flatwoods, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, May 17, 2008.

Maxie, the daughter of the late Harry Adams and Trinnie Hayes Adams, was born at Cordell, Kentucky on April 25, 1917. She was educated in the Ashland Public Schools where she graduated from Ashland Senior High in 1936.

She is survived by her loving husband, O.D. Riley Jr.; one son, Clarence Ray Riley and his wife Darlene of Ashland; her sister, Doris Jane Kellough and her husband Charles of Ashland; grandchildren, Michael Riley and his wife Evelyn of Ironton, Ohio, Christopher Riley and his wife Karen of Ashland, Matthew Riley and his wife Sabrina of Flatwoods, Brian Bass-Riley and his wife Lori of Fairhaven, New Jersey and Kimberly Sansom of Ashland; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her sister Lexie Carnes and her brother Ray Adams.

Her first job was Evan’s Bakery, where she worked for several years and met her husband; and then went on to work at JC Penney for 14 years. She was of the Baptist faith and was very active in Sunday School and as a prayer warrior in the churches that she was a member of in Ashland, Lexington, Columbus, Ohio, and Clearfield Baptist Church in Morehead where her membership remains.

Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 20 at the Steen Funeral Home, Central Avenue Chapel, Ashland, with the Revs. Pete Miller, Jim Nichols and H.G. Pratt officiating. Burial at Rose Hill Cemetery.

Franklin D. “Jack” Catron
1934-2008

MOREHEAD – Franklin D. “Jack” Catron, 73, of Maple Lane passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2008 in the St. Claire Regional Medical Center.

He was born on July 17, 1934 in Carter County, Kentucky, a son of the late John and Kate Nickles Catron.

Mr. Catron was a retired machine setter for Ford Motor Company in Ypsilanti, Michigan. He was a Kentucky Colonel and attended the Sharkey Free Will Baptist Church. Mr. Catron enjoyed taking care of his home and yard, attending church, working in the church, traveling and visiting with family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Herbert Owen Catron, who was killed in action while serving in the Navy during World War II and an infant brother and one sister, Jessie Oxendine.

Survivors include his wife, Charlene Silcox Catron, whom he married on May 17, 1956, of Morehead, six sisters, Jewell Seagraves, Christine Johnson and Pauline Johnson all of Morehead, Maxine Stephens of Lebanon, Ohio, Olive Lee Pierce of Mansfield, Ohio and Martha Silcox of Ypsilanti, Michigan and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Friday, April 11, 2008 in the chapel of the Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home with Rev. Harley Sexton, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Catron Cemetery in Elliott County.

Pallbearers will be nephews.

Bill David Smith
1923-2008

MOREHEAD – Mr. Bill David Smith, age 84 of Mt. Orab, Ohio formerly of Morehead, passed away Thursday, April 10, 2008 in The Clermont Mercy Hospital in Batavia, Ohio.

Mr. Smith was born in Haldeman, Kentucky on May 20, 1923, a son of the late Marion Smith and Ada Lands Smith Blevins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert "Toodle" Smith.

Survivors include two sons, James T. Smith of Conneautville, Pennsylvania and Jonathan Smith of Morehead, two daughters, Sheryl Havens of Mt. Orab, Ohio and Ada Smith of Morehead, two sisters, Mary Clark of Romulus, Michigan and Marian Hunt of Garden City, Michigan, two brothers, Jack Smith of Morehead and Charles Blevins of Rockwood, Michigan, granddaughters, Melinda Cutright of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Leigh Smith of Morehead and Erin Smith of Tulsa, a grandson, Aaron Havens of Hamersville, Ohio and great-granddaughters, Amberly and Amanda Carden of Tulsa.

Memorial Services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at the Haldeman Church of God with Brother Don Rivers officiating. Private burial will be in the Fultz Cemetery on Christy Creek. Visitation is one hour prior to the service.
