Leslie “Red” Pendland
1911-2008
MOREHEAD – Leslie “Red” Pendland, 96, of Winchester, Kentucky formerly of Cranston passed away Monday, June 2, 2008 in the Clark Regional Medical Center in Winchester.
He was born on July 5, 1911 in Carter County, Kentucky, a son of the late Charles Pendland and Lucinda Stone Pendland Stacy.
Mr. Pendland was a retired farmer and construction worker. He was of the Church of God Faith and enjoyed square dancing, squirrel hunting and fishing.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lorena Plank Pendland who passed away on December 17, 1982, one brother, Delbert Pendland, one sister, Marie Paglia, two half brothers, Sam and Clinton and three half sisters, Lona, Irene and Juanita.
Survivors include two daughters, Janet Haney and her husband, Bob and Susan Bergstedt and her husband, Steve all of Winchester, one sister, Lyda Springer of Lagrange, Indiana, two sisters-in-law, Tina Evans and Volena “Sissy” Evans both of Morehead, two grandchildren, Robbie Haney and Jenny Noplis and her husband, Anthony and one great-grandson, Jake Noplis.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Friday, June 6, 2008 in the chapel of the Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home with Rev. Cecil Ison officiating. Burial will follow in the Brown Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Steve Bergstedt, Bob Haney, Robbie Haney, Anthony Noplis, Tim Plank and Don Evans and honorary pallbearers will be Glenn Buckner, Jack Evans and Joe Planck.

June Riley
VIRGINIA - June G. Riley, 66, of Toano, Va., passed away peacefully on Monday, May 26, 2008. She is preceded in death by her father Charlie Gray and brother Eldon Gray.
She is survived by her husband of 38 years Terence Riley, son Terence Riley III, daughters Rosemarie and Andrea Riley, mother Mescal Frailey, brother Floyd Gray, and other family and friends.
June was born and raised in Morehead, Ky. and was a graduate of the University Of Kentucky School of Journalism. Early in her career she was a reporter for the Virginia Pilot and later dedicated her work to raising a family and loving home in Troy, Mich.
The family will receive friends on Friday May 30, 2008 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd. A Mass of Resurrection service will be held 10 AM Saturday May 31, 2008 at St. Olafs, 104 Norge Lane, Williamsburg, VA. Interment to follow at the Williamsburg Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the American Brain Tumor Association.
Gaye Osborne
1937-2008
MOREHEAD - Greta Gaye Lafferty Osborne, 70, of Circle Drive, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Thursday evening, February 21, 2008, at the M. D. Anderson Medical Center in Houston, Texas.
She was born April 18, 1937, in Wheelwright, Kentucky, and was the daughter of the late William and Delphia Boyd Lafferty.
Gaye is survived by her husband of 50 years, Jim Osborne, whom she wed September 26, 1957; one daughter, Jama Gaye Osborne Rose and husband Dustin of Cynthiana, Kentucky; and only grandson, four-year-old Jameson Rose.
Other survivors include four sisters: Billie Ann Lee and husband Roger of Smyrna, Tennessee; Vickie Willingham and husband Bryant of Tuscumbia, Alabama; Gail Turner of Smyrna, Tennessee; and Carolyn Hall and husband Sam of Ironton, Ohio; one brother, Martin Lafferty and wife Gwen of Shelbyville, Tennessee; and several dear nieces and nephews.
Gaye, a 1955 graduate of Wheelwright High School, received the bachelor’s degree from Morehead State University, and the master’s degree from Ball State University. She also completed postgraduate work at Southern Mississippi University.
Gaye was a retired professor of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation at Morehead State University and was a former faculty member at Ball State University and Southern Mississippi University.
She was a founding member of the Morehead Church of Christ; past president of the American Cancer Society; charter member of Delta Tau Chapter, Kappa Delta Sorority; past president of the Morehead State University Women’s Club; and a member of PEO and Morehead Woman’s Club.
Above all things, Gaye’s greatest accomplishments were being a wife, mother and grandmother.
Visitation is Monday, February 25, 2008, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 26, 2008, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Mike Grose and Dustin Rose officiating. Burial will be in Lee Cemetery.

Garnet Josephine Burley McKenzie
1922-2008
MOREHEAD - Garnet Josephine Burley McKenzie, age 85, of Glaser Driver, Kettering, Ohio, passed away Sunday, February 10, 2008, at Kettering Hospital, in Dayton, Ohio. She had resided in the Dayton, Ohio, area since 1942.
Born July 30, 1922, in Ashland, Kentucky, Garnet was the daughter of the late Floyd and Hazel Pearl Brown Burley. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Virginia Burley.
Garnet is survived by her husband of 59 years, William A. “Jack” McKenzie; her daughter and son-in-law, Deborah L. and Rocky Howard of Sabina, Ohio; son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Carol McKenzie of Monroe, Ohio; four grandchildren: Jessica and husband Julian MacGowan of Ocala, Florida; Christina Combs, Dayton, Ohio; Branham McKenzie and Leah McKenzie of Monroe, Ohio; one great grandchild, Alexis Combs; as well as two nephews, Michael and Ralph Burley of Kettering, Ohio.
Garnet was a very special mother and grandmother. She will be missed by many.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 13, 2008, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Guy McKenzie officiating. Burial will follow in the New Alfrey Cemetery.

Frederick William Schwartz III
1939-2008
MOREHEAD – Frederick William Schwartz III, 68, of Newport, Kentucky passed away Saturday, February 9, 2008 in the St. Luke Hospital East, Hospice in Fort Thomas, Kentucky.
He was born on September 15, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois, a son of the late Frederick W. Schwartz, II and Bernice Smith Schwartz.
Mr. Schwartz was a truck driver and he enjoyed caring for his family.
Survivors include his wife, Deborah Gray Schwartz of Newport, three sons, Frederick William Schwartz, IV of Burlington, William Michael Schwartz and Michael William Schwartz both of Newport, one brother, James Corcoran of Chicago, Illinois, his mother-in-law, Loretta Gray of Newport and one grandson, Frederick William Schwartz, V.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 13, 2008 in the chapel of the Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Hampton Cemetery in Elliott County. Visitation is after 6:00 P.M. Tuesday.

Beulah Anna Hardin Cooper Kern
1919-2007
MOREHEAD - Beulah Anna Hardin Cooper Kern, of Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, November 17, 2007, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead. She was the 88-year-old matriarch of four generations.
Beulah was born April 29, 1919, at Wrigley in Morgan County, Kentucky, the youngest child of John Henry Lewis and Martha Bell Hardin. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Vester Cooper; her second husband, Joseph Kern; her older siblings: Carmie, Ace, Dewey, Clayton, Bob, Will, Ollie, Arlie, Cleatus, and Hollie; and her granddaughter, Uyvonna Cantrell.
She is survived by her five children: Wanda (Lonnie) Treadway of Fulton, Missouri; Vileta (Paul) Williamson of Clearfield, Kentucky; Linda (Gary) Althiser of Fulton, Missouri; Nellie Jo (Tommy) Whitt of Wrigley, Kentucky; and Charles Ray (Tooter) Cooper of Fulton, Missouri.
She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great grandchildren; and her beloved dog, Angel.
Funeral services were conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 20, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Harley Sexton, Jr., officiating. Beulah was laid to rest at the Hardin Family Cemetery on Big Lick Road in Morgan County, Kentucky.
Mary Jo Skaggs Stafford
1928-2007
MOREHEAD - Mary Jo Skaggs Stafford, age 79, of Butts Cemetery Road, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, November 17, 2007, at her residence.
She was born November 27, 1928, in Elliott County, Kentucky, and was the daughter of the late Ora Granville and Betha Smith Skaggs. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse J. Stafford; one son, Jerry Lee Sparks; one sister, Doris Hannah; and one granddaughter, Jennifer (Jenny) Cornett.
Survivors include one son, Sam M. Sparks of Morehead; four daughters, Shirley Blair of Morehead, Kentucky; Lois Gilliland of Columbus, Ohio; Dixie Sparks of New Port Richey, Florida; and Marium Glover of Morehead, Kentucky; four stepchildren, Bonita Lowe of Morehead, Kentucky; Joyce Breeze of Morehead, Kentucky; Carla Brown of Lexington, Kentucky; and Harold Stafford of Morehead, Kentucky; one brother, Harlan Skaggs of Stark, Kentucky; one sister, Ellen Mabry of Hillsboro, Kentucky; 12 grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Stafford was a homemaker and former employee of Case Manufacturing in Olive Hill, Kentucky. On March 4, 1989, she was baptized and became a member of the Church of God New World Ministries.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 21, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Pastor George Trent officiating. Burial will follow in Brown Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Scott Clevenger, Ronnie Sparks, Brian Clevenger, David Sparks, Cass Blair, and Aaron Dourson.
