Martha Lou Morgan
1934-2007
OLIVE HILL - Mrs. Martha Lou Justice Baker Morgan, age 73, of Lexington, Kentucky, formerly of Olive Hill, Kentucky, went home to be with the Lord, Monday morning, December 10, 2007, at her residence in Lexington.
Mrs. Morgan was born April 21, 1934, in Carter County, Kentucky, and is a daughter of the late Roye and Mary Opal Phillips Justice.
Martha was a Christian and a member of the First Baptist Church in Olive Hill. She was a homemaker, loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Talmadge Justice and one sister, Juanita Hall.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Ballard Morgan. Four sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Randall and Connie Baker, Rodney and Lynn Baker all of Olive Hill, Kentucky, David and Connie Morgan of Anchorage, Alaska, Doug and Glenola Morgan of Morehead, Kentucky. Two daughters and sons-in-law, Robin and Jeffery Mauk of Olive Hill, Kentucky, Maria and Gene Tester of Beattyville, Kentucky. Seventeen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A host of friends and other family members who will sadly miss her.
Funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 12, 2007, at the Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, Kentucky, with Brother Mark Lilly officiating. Burial will follow in the Garvin Ridge Cemetery in Olive Hill, Kentucky.
Friends may call after noon Wednesday and until the service hour at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill.
Daniel Ingels, Nick Allen, Kalen Morgan, Clark Gordon, Matt Vetter and Brad Baker will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be, Paul Morgan, Aaron Morgan, Ryan Morgan, Doug Morgan, David Morgan, Gene Tester, Evan Baker, Kenny Stone, Justice Allen, Willy Allen, Jonah Vetter and Benjamin Vetter.
Billie Jessie Butler
1943-2008
MOREHEAD – Billie Jessie Butler, 64, passed away Thursday, January 10, 2008 in the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky.
He was born on March 2, 1943 in Fleming County, Kentucky, a son of the late Henry Lee and Martha Spurlock Butler.
Mr. Butler was a former sawmill worker. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and baseball.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one step-son, Randy Stegall, two brothers, Howard Butler and Virgil Butler and one sister, Bertha Molton.
Survivors include his wife, Wilma Poston Stegall Butler of Morehead, two step-sons, Tim Stegall of Salt Lick and Mark Stegall of Tennessee, two step-daughters, Brenda Adams of Mt. Sterling and Lisa Lowe of Morehead, two brothers, Eddie Butler of Mt. Sterling and Jim Butler of Aurora, Indiana, one sister, Ruby Eldridge of Dayton, Ohio, 13 step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, January 13, 2008 in the chapel of the Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home with Rev. James Allen officiating. Burial was in the Goddard Cemetery in Fleming County.
Pallbearers were Rob Nelson, Scott Greenwell, Espy Molton, Eli Stegall, Randy Eldridge and Mike Eldridge.
George Warren Eyster
1925-2008
MOREHEAD - George Warren Eyster, 82, of Tamarac, FL, retired Morehead State University administrator/educator, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 30, 2007, at his home.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Marion Brinch Fischer Eyster and daughter, Mariana (Nita) Brinch Eyster.
George was born on March 24, 1925, in Harrisburg, PA. He served as LTJG in the U.S. Navy in World War II and the Korean War, where he was stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
He graduated from the University of Michigan with Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees; Eastern Michigan University, Master of Arts; and Michigan State University, Specialist Degree in Community Education.
George was a Big 10 and All-American springboard and tower diver on the U of M Swimming and Diving Team and in 1948 was awarded a Big 10 and NCAA Championship ring.
While in Michigan, Mr. Eyster was Director of Youth Programs and was responsible for conferences and visitations for the Mott Foundation and the Flint Board of Education. He served as Consultant for Elementary and Secondary Education Curriculums and Community School Project for the Michigan Department of Public Instruction. George was instrumental in the founding of the Flint Olympian and CANUSA Games.
He moved in 1960 to Mexico City, D.F., as Assistant Superintendent and Director of Adult Education Programs for the American School Foundation.
In 1967, Mr. Eyster was employed at Morehead State University as Executive Director of the Appalachian Adult Basic Education Center and Director of Continuing and Community Education. He retired in 1992.
During his tenure at Morehead, he was active in the National Association of Public and Continuing Education, served on the editorial board of the Community Education Journal, authored numerous publications and received several awards, including the Mohammad Reza Pahlavi Award from UNESCO for meritorious work in world literacy and a Senior Fulbright Scholarship to Australia.
Inurnment services with full military honors will be held at the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery in Alexandria, VA. Memorial services will be held at a later date in Morehead, KY and Flint, MI.

Emma Jane Johnson Hutchinson
1911-2008
MOREHEAD - Emma Jane Johnson Hutchinson, age 96, of Knapp Avenue, Morehead, Kentucky, died peacefully on Saturday, January 12, 2008, at home after a long illness.
Born March 22, 1911, in Morehead, she was the daughter of the late Robert B. Johnson and Amanda Caudill Johnson.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Curt Hutchinson, on July 9, 1982. Also preceding her in death were a sister Nellie Keeton and husband Clyde; half-sister Myrtle Foster and half-brother Boone Hollan, Jr.; and sister-in-law, Pauline Redwine Johnson.
Survivors include a brother Clester Ovel Johnson of Morehead; several nieces and nephews including Dr. James O. Johnson of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and the Rev. Luther Keeton of Louisville, Kentucky; and sister-in-law Jean Hollan of Morehead. Mrs. Hutchinson is also survived by her dedicated caregivers Bobbie Newsome, Pauline Johnson, and Naoma Maines.
Emma, who spent her entire life in Morehead, was a graduate of Morehead High School. She was a former member of the Morehead Day Homemakers, Order of the Eastern Star, and Gideons Auxiliary. In addition to being a homemaker, she enjoyed gardening, needlework and quilting. A longstanding member of the Church of God, she was active in many church functions, including Women of the Church of God, until declining health in recent years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 15, 2008, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Allan Hutchinson officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Steve Lewis, Buford Owens, Art Litton, Bobby Trent, John Paul Thomas, Roy Anderson, Dr. James O. Johnson, the Rev. Luther Keeton, and Randall Keeton.
Visitation is from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 15, 2008, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.
Winfred Vaughn McCarty
1925-2008
MOREHEAD - Winfred Vaughn McCarty, age 82, of Mabry Drive, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Friday, January 11, 2008, at the St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky.
He was born January 30, 1925, in Bath County, Kentucky, and was the son of the late Morris E. and Grace Armstrong McCarty. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Jack Carrington McCarty, on March 17, 2006.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, Anna Louise Blevins McCarty, whom he married
January 23, 1946; and one sister, Nancy Reffitt, of Morehead, Kentucky.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served on the USS California.
Winfred worked at McCarty Garage, a family owned business, in Salt Lick, Kentucky, and was a former employee of Russell Perry’s Hardware in Morehead and Cheap’s Chevrolet in Flemingsburg. He was a machine mechanic and electrician at Cowden Manufacturing and Big Yank for 26 years. He was a Kentucky Colonel and 50-year member of Salt Lick Masonic Lodge No. 682.
He was a member of the Clearfield Tabernacle First Church of God, where he was board member, bus driver, usher, and member of the choir and men’s group.
Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Monday, January 14, 2008, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Pastor Gary McQuain, the Rev. Max Molihan, and the Rev. Lowell Rice officiating. Burial was in the Jones Cemetery in Midland with full military rites conducted by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126.
Pallbearers were Ronnie Porter, Ronnie Smedley, Mac Moore, Deron Moore, Warren Moore, Ted Blevins, Dennis Blevins, Robert Thiess, Roger Thiess, Paul Moore, Doug Lee, and Roger Grace.
Visitation was Sunday, January 13, 2008, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.
Helen Black Whitt
1940-2008
MOREHEAD – Helen Black Whitt, 67, passed away Saturday, January 12, 2008 in the St. Claire Regional Medical Center.
She was born on October 16, 1940 in Rowan County, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Wilbert and Missouri Combs Black.
Helen was a member of the Morehead First Free Will Baptist Church, where she was a member of the women’s auxiliary and the choir, Morehead Order of the Eastern Star No. 227 where she held several offices and The Sharkey Homemakers where she was a Past President and Secretary and she enjoyed music, playing the piano, dulcimer and guitar, singing and painting with acrylic and oils.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Otis Black who passed away in 1991.
Survivors include her husband, Herbert Whitt, five brothers, Palmer Black of Knox, Indiana, Wilbert “Bugs” Black, Gus Black, Dennis Black and Kenneth Black all of Morehead, three sisters, Vivian Spurlock of Goshen, Indiana, Joan Fouch of Morehead and Bonnie Jones of Salt Lick and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 15, 2008 in the chapel of the Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home with Rev. David Starcher and Rev. Brad Bennington officiating. Burial will follow in the Black Family Cemetery at Sharkey. Eastern Star services by Morehead Order of the Eastern Star No. 227 were conducted at 7:30 P.M. Monday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Dennis Black, Gus Black, Wilbert “Bugs” Black, Palmer Black, Dwayne Wilson, Bill Patrick, Mark Black and Kenneth Black and honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Thacker, Tommy Fouch, Kenneth Spurlock, Rudy Jones, Sanford Bentley and Paul Little.
