Mauverine Miles Cassady
1918-2007

MOREHEAD - Mauverine Miles Cassady, age 89, widow of Clifford R. Cassady, former Superintendent of Rowan County Schools, passed away Sunday, December 23, 2007, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead, KY.

Mauverine was born on November 29, 1918, in Elliott County, KY. She was the daughter of James H. and Arizona Pennington Miles and the sister of Eugene Miles and Ernest Miles.

Mauverine was a 1935 graduate of Breckinridge Training School and received a BA in Education from Morehead State Teachers College in 1939. From 1939-1943, Mauverine taught at Old House Creek, Elliottville, Farmers, and Clearfield Elementaries in Rowan County. From 1943-1945, Mauverine was employed as a secretary at Morehead State College, and from 1945-1947 as an accounting clerk at Glen L. Martin Aeronautics in Baltimore, Maryland. Mauverine worked as an administrative assistant at Lee Clay Products Company, Clearfield, KY, from 1947-1955. From 1961-1998, Mauverine was employed as Office Manager for the Rowan County Board of Education.

Mauverine was a member of the Morehead United Methodist Church, and a former member of the Morehead Woman’s Club and the Morehead Canasta Club.

Mauverine is survived by her daughter, Cathy Cassady Corbin; her son-in-law, Tom Corbin; her nieces, Patty Lichtle, Memphis, TN, Gladys Horn, Inez, KY, Carol Mills, Inez, KY, Brenda Akers, Inez, KY, Karen Marcum, Grayson, KY; and her nephews, John Russell Copley, Fort Myers, FL, Darrell Marcum, Grayson, KY, David Marcum, Davis, CA, Bill Cassady, Beaver, WV, Chris Cassady, Tallahassee, FL, and Randy Cassady, Inez, KY.

Funeral services were conducted 3 p.m. Thursday, December 27, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Dr. J. D. Reeder officiating. Burial was in Lee Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ron Suttle, David Mirus, Joe Kaelin, Darrell Marcus, Gary Trent, and Ted Trent.

Honorary pallbearers were Jay Booth, Kenneth Bland, John Brock, Willie Pennington, Norman Riley, Harvey Pennington, Ken Howard, Wales Trent and Billy Ray James.

Memorials may be made to St. Claire Hospice, 222 Medical Circle, Morehead, KY 40351 or to the Rowan County Board of Education Mauverine Cassady Memorial Fund, 121 East Second Street, Morehead, KY 40351.

Gladys Flannery
1927-2007

MOREHEAD - Mrs. Gladys Coldiron Flannery, age 80, of Bull Fork Road, Morehead, passed away Sunday, Dec. 23, 2007 in the St. Claire Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born in Rowan County, Kentucky on June 6, 1927 to the late Sam and Eliza Miller Coldiron. Gladys was the wife of Rufus Flannery and the sister of Betty Elam of Carlisle, Pennsylvania and Willie H. Coldiron of Georgetown, Kentucky. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Rose Hall and Lula Mae Cornett and a brother, Clayton Coldiron. Mrs. Flannery was a member of the Siloam First Church of God where she was a member and treasurer of the WCG. She was a wonderful homemaker and enjoyed raising a garden, tending her flowers, cooking and canning. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, December 27, 2007 in the chapel of the Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home with Rev. Albert McCalvin officiating. Burial followed in the Siloam Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers were all of Rufus and Gladys' nephews.

George M. May
1942-2007

MOREHEAD - George M. May, age 65, of U.S. 60 East, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, December 26, 2007, at the St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.

He was born May 20, 1942, in Rowan County, Kentucky, son of the late Henry and Jessie Johnson May. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Melissa May, and four brothers, Hershel May, James May, Murl May, and Fred Puckett.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille Kay Brickles May and her mother, Lorene Brickles; one son, DeWayne May of Haldeman, Kentucky; two daughters, Melinda Copley of Ashland, Kentucky, and Amanda Brickles of Morehead, Kentucky; seven brothers, Sam May, Vernon May, Lansford May, Arlie May, and John May, all of Morehead, Kentucky, Jerry May of Springport, Indiana, and H. D. (Tony) Puckett of Union City, Indiana; three sisters, Janice Parker, Eulalia Blevins, and Alice Raikes, all of Morehead, Kentucky; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

George had been an employee in saw mills, construction, and the Rowan County Road Department.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday, December 29, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Brother Lonnie Conn officiating. Burial will follow in the May Family Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be DeWayne May, Gardner May, Lonnie Conn, Joe Parker, Linton Parker, Jeff Parker, Tony Puckett, Dennis Braggs, John May, and Mark Copley. George’s brothers will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Visitation is after 5 p.m. Friday, December 28, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.

Kristopher (Kris) Lynn Navarre
1961-2007

CLEARFIELD - Kristopher L. Navarre, age 46, of Clearfield, Kentucky passed away Saturday, December 22 at UK Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 10, 1961 in Toledo, Ohio and was the son of the late Ray and Mary Navarre.

He is survived by his wife Mary Louise Curtis Navarre; three daughters, Jamaica Hinton, Casey Day and Kelli Jo Day, all of Clearfield, Kentucky; and one grandson, Blaken Caudill. He was also survived by one brother, Kevin Navarre of Toledo, Ohio; two sisters, Kathy Harman of Toledo, Ohio and Kim Navarre of California.

Celebration of Life services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. on December 24, 2007 at Farmers Christian Church. Services were conducted by Brother Billy Noble and Brother Tim Bailey.

Lottie W. Patterson
1914-2007

MOREHEAD – Lottie W. Patterson, 93, of Meadow Lane formerly of Perry County, Kentucky passed away Sunday, December 23, 2007 in the St. Claire Regional Medical Center.

She was born on November 17, 1914 in Breathitt County, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Allison and Kitty Spicer White.

Mrs. Patterson was a homemaker and a mother. She attended the Lakeview Community Church and the Wabaco Pentecostal Church in Hazard and she enjoyed quilting.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Winston Patterson who passed away in 1956, two sons, Wilson Saul Patterson and Charles Lindon Patterson, six brothers, Goldy, South, Floyd, Clayborn, Fed and Pearl and four sisters, Julie, Miranda, Lizzie and Billie.

Survivors include four sons, Roy Edward Patterson and his wife Rose of Southport, North Carolina, Thomas Layton Patterson and his wife Letha, Anthony Richard Patterson and his wife Sandra, and John Herbert Patterson and his wife Debbie, all of Hazard; two daughters, Freda Lou Kilburn of Morehead and Sharon Ruth Caudill and her husband Clyde M. of Jackson; two daughters-in-law, Kathy Patterson of Hazard and Patsy Patterson of Panacea, Florida; one sister, Willa Fraley and her husband Jack of Ten Mile, Tennessee; eighteen grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, December 27, 2007 at the Breathitt Funeral Home in Jackson with Rev. James Allen, Rev. Rick Bolton and Thurman Wright officiating. Burial followed in the White and Francis Cemetery in Whick, Kentucky. Pallbearers were Timothy Wendell Kilburn, Ira Scott Kilburn, Roy Edward Patterson II, Charles Ira Patterson, Jarrod Victor Patterson, John Albert Patterson, Joshua Wayne Patterson, Anthony Shawn Patterson, Charles “Chuck” Patterson and Richard Patterson.

Contributions are suggested to the Lakeview Community Church Building Fund or St. Claire Hospice.

Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home is caring for all arrangements.

Rema Bond Pendlum
1928-2007

OLIVE HILL - Mrs. Rema Bond Pendlum, age 79, of Olive Hill, Kentucky, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday evening December 23, 2007, at the Saint Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead, Kentucky.

Mrs. Pendlum was born May 12, 1928, in Carter County, Kentucky, and is a daughter of the late Theodore and Wanda Riley Bond.

Rema was a homemaker, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend to all who knew her. She was a Christian for more than fifty-four years and a member of the Flat Fork Church of God.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of forty-six years, Clayton Pendlum. One grandson, Brian Neal Pelfrey. Two brothers, Charles Bond and Phillip Bond. One sister, Zelma Bond.

She is survived by five sons and a daughter-in-law, Larry Pendlum of Naples, Florida, Stanley Pendlum of Atlanta, Georgia, David Pendlum of Washington, DC, Darrell and Kaye Pendlum of McMinnville, Tennessee and Scott Pendlum of Minneapolis - Saint Paul, Minnesota. Three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Stephen Simpson, Regina and Brent Jaynes all of Morehead, Kentucky, Rita and Frank Skaggs of Atlanta, Georgia. Seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Five brothers, Elmer Bond, Jackie Bond and Roger Bond all of Mansfield, Ohio, Lester Bond and Danny Bond, both Olive Hill, Kentucky. Six sisters, Esta Stigall, Stella Strickland and Mary Opal Conn all of Mansfield, Ohio, Virgie Barker, Judy Stone and Betty Bailey all of Olive Hill, Kentucky. Numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of other family member, neighbors and friends who will sadly miss her.

Funeral service was held Thursday, December 27, 2007, at the Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, Kentucky, with Brother Delmar Logan Jr. and Brother Terry Glovier officiating. Burial followed in the Garvin Ridge Cemetery in Olive Hill, Kentucky.

Vernon Kilgore, Mark Orcutt, Greg Kiser, Chalmer Rayburn, Edward Rayburn, Dwight Rayburn and Bill Bradley served as pallbearers.

Elwood Pernell
1935-2007

MOREHEAD - Elwood Pernell, age 72, of Clearfield Street, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Friday, December 21, 2007, at the St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.

He was born January 8, 1935, in Rowan County, Kentucky, and was the son of the late Robbie and Lula Fultz Pernell.

Survivors include his wife, Bessie McGlothin Pernell, whom he married September 30, 1983; one son, Elwood Pernell Jr. of Morehead; two daughters, Brenda Kay Pernell May and husband Ron and Barbara Ann Cook, all of Monticello, Indiana; and three grandchildren, Mike Cole, Martha Ann Niece, and Cory Niece.

Elwood was self-employed with Pernell Window Washing in Lafayette, Indiana, and Morehead, Kentucky. He was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Morehead.

Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Monday, December 24, 2007, at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with the Rev. Molly Smothers officiating. Burial was in Lee Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Elders of the First Christian Church.

Visitation was Sunday, December 23, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.
