1921-2008
ROCHESTER, IND - Lydia M. Stigall, 87, formerly of Hamlet, IN passed away April 22, 2008 in Hickory Creek Health Care Center, Rochester. Mrs. Stigall was born April 4, 1921 in Morehead, KY to James and Lana (May) Messer and lived in the area for 60 years, coming from Kentucky. On February 19, 1937 in Morehead, she was married
to Glenmore Stigall, who preceded her in death in 1980. She was also preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, four brothers and companion, Harry Minix. Survivors include: five daughters, Louise Stevens of Plymouth, Barbara Feltner and Patsy Zeiger, both of Rochester, Glenda Greer of Plymouth and Fredia Adams of Knox; 15 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, seven great-great grandchildren; three sisters, Juanita “Junie” Stevens of Morehead, KY, Bobby Lu Johnson of Ingalls, IN and Martha Jessie of Seymour, IL; one brother, Leonard Messer of Knox.
She was a former employee of Pilgrim Manor Nursing Home in Plymouth and a past member of the Church of God in Morehead.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 1:00 p.m. CDT at Rannells Funeral Home, Hamlet Chapel with Rev. Floyd Allen officiating. Burial will be in the Fletcher Cemetery, Hamlet. Friends may call Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at the funeral home.
Sadie Tranbarger
1926-2008
FLEMINGSBURG - Miss Sadie Tranbarger, 81, of Flemingsburg, KY passed from this life to eternal life on Monday, April 21, 2008 at her home. Sadie was born on May 19, 1926 in Rowan County and was the daughter of the late Hiriam and Bertha Eldridge.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Roy Eldridge, Troy Eldridge and Clarence Eldridge.
Sadie is survived by her husband of61 years, Paul Tranbarger; three children, Richard Tranbarger and spouse Margaret, Vicki Stephens and spouse Danny, and Jeff Tranbarger and spouse Valerie, all of Flemingsburg, KY.
In addition to her spouse and children, Sadie is also survived by seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren: Melissa Lytle, Brad Stephens and spouse Nikki, April Stephens Lowe and spouse Duane, Monica Tranbarger Hill and spouse Chad, Amber Stephens Hinton, Brooke Tranbarger, and J.P Tranbarger and spouse Stacy. Great grandchildren; Myranda and Martina Lytle, Sidney and Noah Stephens, Blake Hamilton, Lauren and Emma Hill, and Owen Lowe.
Very special extended family: Tammy Kinder and her two children, Derrick and Garrett Kinder.
Sadie also has four surviving brothers and sisters: Dessie Cate of Richmond, IN, Dorothy Blake of Indianapolis, IN, Delmar Eldridge and Vencil Eldridge, both of Flemingsburg, KY and one sister-in-law, Stella Eldridge of Harrison, Ohio.
Vistation and celebration of life services were at the Mt. Pisgah Christian Church in Rowan County where she was a faithful member. Visitation was on Thursday, April 22 from 5-9 p.m. and Celebration of Life service at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 23, 2008. Boone-Nickell Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made in her honor to Hospice of Hope (909 Kenton Station Drive, Maysville KY 41056), who helped bridge her journey to heaven.
Dorothy L. Bowen Harding
FLORENCE – Dorothy L. Bowen Harding, 84, of Florence and formerly of Morehead, passed away Thursday, April 24 at St. Elizabeth Med Cnt. Hospice in Edgewood.
Harding had worked as an assembler at Wadsworth Electric Company and was affiliated with the Erlanger First Church of the Nazarene. She is survived by her husband, Grover “G.H.” Harding of Florence, son Michael Cox of Florence, brothers Samuel Bowen, Jr. of Burlington, Gene Bowen of Spencer, Ind., and Jimmy Bowen of Bloomfield, Ind., sisters Evelyn Abney of Spencer, Ind., Bobbie Chandler of Indianapolis, Ind., Reba Lehman of Covington, Karen Yarnee of Fairlane, Ind., and Sharon Campbell of Farmersburg, Ind. Her father and mother, Samuel and Pearl (Withrow) Bowen, preceded her in death. Mrs. Harding had two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services were at the Stith Funderal Home in Florence on Monday, April 28. Burial followed in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens at Taylor Mill. Memorial contributions may be made to Erlanger First Church of the Nazarene, 21 Short Hill Lane, Erlanger, KY 41018.
Paul P. Jennings
1940-2008
MOREHEAD – Paul P. Jennings, 67, of Big Woods Road passed away Friday morning, April 25, 2008 in the St. Claire Regional Medical Center after an illness of several weeks.
He was born on May 17, 1940 in Johnson County, Kentucky, a son of the late Press and Maude Bell Jennings.
Paul was a former Coalminer, Insurance Agent and Milk Truck Driver. He enjoyed doing all kinds of work, especially repairing and fixing things. He was of the Free Will Baptist faith and attended the Sharkey Free Will Baptist Church. His favorite things to do were read his Bible and share his testimony for the Lord.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Press Jennings, Jr., Douglas Jennings, Ronnie Jennings, Robert Jennings and Roger Jennings.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret (Mickey) Glover Jennings of Morehead, one son, Paul Jennings, Jr. of Morehead, two daughters, Lisa Ann Christian of Van Lear, Kentucky and Kimberly Jo Martin and her husband, James of Staffordsville, Kentucky, a step-son, Clinton Hamm and his wife, Toni of Cincinnati, Ohio, one brother, Charles Jennings of Baron Springs, Virginia, two sisters, Barbara Travis of Fairborn, Ohio and Shelby McLaughlin of Lebanon, Ohio, two grandchildren, Derek Christian and Austin Martin, three step-grandchildren, Jared, Joshua and Jessie and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 29, 2008 in the chapel of the Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home with Rev. Harley Sexton, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Brown Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Clinton Hamm, Bob Adams, Rodney Gregory, Roger Stigall, Rufus Williams and Herbert Hyatt and honorary pallbearers will be Clayton Carroll, Merle Jones, Charles Jennings, Chuck Jennings and Dewayne Gregory.
Kenneth L. Speer
1929-2008
Speer, Kenneth L., 78, died Fri., Apr. 25, 2008 at the Hospice Care Center. Born August 22, 1929 in Rhea, OK, a small town his grandfather help found and operated the county general store. His parents were the late Clarence Debs and Irene Speer. Mr. Speer attended Rhea country school and Leedey High School. The family moved to Taloga, OK in 1945 where he graduated from high school in 1946. He went on to attend Oklahoma A & M from 1946 to 1948. Mr. Speer was a Korean War Veteran, serving 2 years, stationed with the 194th Field Artillery Bn. in Wertheim Germany. Upon returning from the service he enrolled in Southwestern State University in Weatherford, OK, where he completed his BS degree. It was here he met his college sweetheart, Elaine McClure, and they were married
in December 1955. After graduating he was employed by the Cowden Manufacturing Company of Lexington, KY, who had a plant in Woodward, OK. He was later transferred to Kentucky by the Cowden Company, and served as plant manager of the Morehead Plant, later manager of the Mt. Sterling plant, and finally division manager of Cowden Plants in eastern Kentucky. In 1979, he and a partner formed a company, TOCOCO, Inc. which operated plants in Midway and Wilmore, KY. He had two passions, one was to be a full time professional grandpa, and the other was to serve his church. They moved to Lexington in November 1972 and joined Immanuel Baptist Church. He served as a director of Adult Sunday School Department since 1973 and several terms on the finance committee. He found the most fun and pleasure however as serving as the construction coordinator of the church’s Habitat Ministry, helping build 15 Habitat houses for Immanuel Baptist Church. He was nominated as hero of the year for the American Red Cross because of his work with Habitat. Survivors other than his wife, include a son, Douglas K. Speer; two granddaughters, Cassidy Leigh Speer and Emily Taylor Speer; a brother, Ronnie Speer; two sisters, Karen (Alan) Riffle and Gayle Acton; and stepmother, Retta Speer. He was preceded in death by a son, Gregory K. Speer and grandson, Cody McClure Speer. Funeral services will be 10 am Tues. at Immanuel Baptist Church by Dr. Greg Loscalzo. Burial will follow in Lexington Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-8 pm Mon. at the church. Contributions are suggested to Immanuel Baptist Church Habitat Fund, 3100 Tates Creek Rd., Lex., Ky 40502. Lorene (Nanny) Hinton Goodwin
1918-2008
MOREHEAD - Lorene (Nanny) Hinton Goodwin, age 89, of Ryan Road, Wallingford, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2008, at the Fleming County Hospital in Flemingsburg, Kentucky.Born August 24, 1918, in Fleming County, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Pearl Hamm Hinton. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by two brothers, Rev. Ivan Hinton and R. G. Hinton; three sisters, Golda Newsom, Dorothy Lewis, and Lucille Newsom; and three grandchildren, Marc Johnson, Patrick Goodwin, and Melissa Dawn Compton. Her beloved husband of 37 years, Willard E. Goodwin, passed away March 22, 1974. She is survived by four daughters, Carolyn and Charles Johnson of St. Augustine, Florida, Patsy and the late Rev. Glennis Sloas of Dayton, Ohio, Marian Farris-Mason of Maysville, Kentucky, and Delores (Penny) and Rev. Larry Compton of Morehead, Kentucky; one son, Dexter and Donna Goodwin of Flemingsburg, Kentucky; 10 grandchildren, Chuck Johnson, Sherri Johnson, Dr. Gwen (Pam) Sloas, Dwana Nunnamaker, Kim Goodwin, Dr. Jan Goodwin, Dr. David Farris, Danica Farris-Jefferson, Larry Compton II, and Heather Compton; and 9 great grandchildren.Other survivors include one sister, Aline Gulley of Flemingsburg, Kentucky, and one brother, Rev. Ford Hinton of Hillsboro, Kentucky.Mrs. Goodwin was a former employee of Randall’s Textron Factory in Flemingsburg, a homemaker, and farmer. A loving and devoted mother and grandmother, she shared her boundless love with so many. People of all ages lovingly referred to her as Nanny. Many lives were influenced by her, and her presence will be sorely missed. Mrs. Goodwin was an active member of the Muses Mill Christian Church for 64 years.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at the Muses Mill Christian Church with the Rev. Jackie Hinton officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park in Flemingsburg, Kentucky.
Pallbearers will be Larry Compton II, Chad Nunnamaker, Dale Jefferson, Jackie McRoberts, James Ray Cummins, Darrell Logan, Ernie Gulley, and Jackie Sheilds.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dakota Compton and Timmy Wright.
Visitation is after 5 p.m. Monday, March 17, 2008, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.
Elmer Kinder Jr.
1927-2008
Muncie, Indiana - Elmer Kinder Jr. went to be with the Lord March 16, 2008.
He was born Nov. 20, 1927 in Rowan County, Morehead, KY to the late Elmer Kinder and Myrle Hogge Kinder.
He was preceded in death by one daughter Adele Kinder, and wife Vivian Kinder. Survivors are one sister, Jane Kinder, and husband Glen Curtis, of Beckley, W.Va.; three brothers, Paul Kinder and wife Gypsy, of Wilmington, Ohio, Denver Kinder, of Morehead Ky.; and Gilbert Kinder of Flemingsburg.
He is also survived by seven nephews and three nieces.
He attended the True Light Baptist Church in Muncie.
Services will be at the church Thursday, March 20 at 11 am.
Visitation will be 4 pm to 8 pm, March 19 at Meek Funeral Home in Muncie, Ind.
Graveside services will be Friday, March 21, 2008 at 1 pm with the Rev. Paul Jackson officiating at the Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Kentucky.
Vinson Alan Watts, Sr.
1929-2008
MOREHEAD - Mr. Vinson Alan Watts, Sr., 78, of Allen Avenue, Morehead, Kentucky, went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 17, 2008, after a long illness, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center.
Born December 23, 1929, at Watts, Kentucky, in Breathitt County, he is the son of the late Leslie and Annie Fugate Watts.
Vinson received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Berea College and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Eastern Kentucky University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army.
He was the Associate Dean of Labor at Berea College before coming to Morehead State University in 1968 as their first Personnel Director. He retired from M.S.U. in 1985. He was a member of the Morehead United Methodist Church.
Other accomplishments he attained throughout his life were past president of the Watts Reunion Incorporated; the Silver Beaver Award for Distinguished Service to Youth by the Blue Grass Council of the Boy Scouts of America; Vice Chairman of the E. O. Robinson Mountain Fund Board; past president of the Rowan County Public Library Board of Trustees; and the 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award in Sustainable Agriculture from the Sustainable Mountain Agriculture Center for his heirloom tomato variety, the Vinson Watts tomato.
Vinson was also active in the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association, including serving as the co-chair of the Health and Insurance Committee and was instrumental in the formation of the Morehead Community Federal Credit Union. He and Patty were members of the Merry Mixers of the Morehead United Methodist Church.
For 55 years he was the beloved husband of Patricia Ann Ascough Watts, also of Morehead. Other survivors include two sons, Vinson Alan Jr. and Claudette Watts of Morehead and Patrick and Patricia Watts of Montgomery Village, Maryland; two grandsons, Vinson Alan (Tripp) Watts, III and Leslie Todd Watts, also of Morehead; a sister, Martha Watts of Scottsburg, IN; two nieces, Allene Miller and her husband Sherill of Scottsburg, IN and Mollie Pearl Duckett and her husband Willard of Bloomington, IN; two brothers-in-law, Dr. James Ascough of West Lafayette, IN, and Larry Ascough of Garland, TX; and a special caregiver, Mary Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mollie Watts.
Visitation is after 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, March 20, 2008, at the Morehead United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bruce Nettleton and Dr. Jack Ellis officiating. Burial will follow in Brown Cemetery with full military rites conducted at the gravesite by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126.
