Edna Thompson
Edna Compton Smith Thompson, 83, of Maryville, Tenn., died Thursday, April 20, 2006, at Maryville Medical Care Center.
She was born at Island Creek, Pikeville, Feb. 13, 1923, the daughter of the late Gracie Ann Osborn and Sill Vanis Compton.
She was a retired cashier of A&P;, Southgate, Mich.
She was preceded in death by two husbands; one daughter, Maggie Smith Price; two brothers, Leonard Compton and Walter Compton; and one sister, Nellie Compton.
She is survived by three sisters, Ida Biderman of Murrieta, Calif., Liza J. Marthaler of Carlis, Pa., Ella P. Pollard of Southgate; one half-brother, Dean Compton of Orlando, Fla.; two half-sisters, Fostina Murphy of Frenchburg and Jannie Bray of Pikeville; one granddaughter, Debrah Ellen McEwen of Wyandotte, Mich.; and three grandchildren of Wyandotte
Funeral services were held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, April 24. Entombment followed in Sherwood Gardens, Maryville. Arrangements were under direction of Miller Funeral Chapel of Maryville.
Florence Venters
Florence Evelyn Lewis Venters, loving mother and caring friend, died at the age of 91 on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2006, at home, following a lengthy illness.
She was born July 29, 1914, in Nelsonville, Ohio, the daughter of Frank and Alta Hoskins Lewis.
She was at home with her three children when she went to be with her Lord.
In addition to her parents, Florence was preceded in death by brothers, Roy Lewis of Chauncey, Ohio; Jack Lewis of The Plains, Ohio; Bill Lewis of Millfield, Ohio; and Gene Hoskins of Nelsonville; and her former husband, Walter Venters of Longwood, Fla.
Florence was a retired registered nurse. She began her nursing career at Pikeville Methodist Hospital in Pikeville, her home for 30 years before returning to Ohio in 1960. In her long career she also was employed by the Pike County Department of Health, the Athens Mental Health Center in Athens, Ohio, the former tuberculosis hospital in Nelsonville, the Veterans Administration Hospital in Chillicothe, Ohio, and several private health care facilities.
Florence is survived by sister Joanne Lewis Lester and husband Jack of Lancaster, Ohio; sisters-in-law Irene Barrows Hoskins of Nelsonville and Lorraine Worthman Venters of Cincinnati; children Anne Venters Stalter of Lancaster, John of Pickerington, Ohio, and fiancee Judy Smith Snyder of Londonderry, Ohio, Steve and his wife, Pam of Delaware, Ohio; grandchildren Evelyn Street and husband Tim of Frankfort, Ohio, Cindy Clark and husband Bob of Carroll, Ohio, Kaye Zarr and husband Stu of Sugar Grove, Ohio, Jessica Venters of Delaware, Andrew Venters of Pickerington, Joseph Venters of Delaware; great-grandchildren, Caleb Street of Chillicothe, Jesse Street of Frankfort, Taylor Clark, of Carroll, Kaitlyn Zarr of Sugar Grove, Sam Clark of Carroll, and Lila Fox of Delaware; and many nephews, nieces and good friends Ruth Cantrell and Sharon Peters of Pickerington.
Florence grew up in Nelsonville before the family moved to Floyd County. She remained in Pikeville when her family returned to Athens County, Ohio. She graduated from high school at Betsy Layne in 1931 and received her nursing degree in 1934. She and Walter were married
in Pikeville, Dec. 20, 1935.
Florence enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren as well as reading and playing brisk games of bridge and euchre. She waited impatiently each year for that summer's harvest of fruits and vegetables and she loved vacations at the ocean.
A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, April 29, at Asbury South United Methodist Church, 4760 Winchester Pike, Columbus, Ohio. Asbury Assistant Pastor April Casperson and Chaplain Brian Votaw of Mount Carmel Hospice of Columbus will lead services.
The family requests a contribution to Mount Carmel Hospice of Columbus in lieu of flowers.

Aleigha LaShae Adams
Aleigha LaShae Adams, an infant, born Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010, at the Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Ky, has passed away.
She was the daughter of Matthew Adams and Pamela Dotson of Freeburn.
She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Harold Dotson and Andy Joe Adams.
Besides her parents, she is also survived by two sisters, Ashley Hamilton and Tessa Adams; maternal grandmother, Rose Dotson of Freeburn; paternal grandmother, Debbie (Doug) Tibbs; and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.
The visitation will take place after 6 p.m. on Saturday, at the church, with service at 7 p.m.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011, at the Barrenshee Church of God, with Rev. Bobby Dale Wolford officiating. Burial will follow in the Dotson Family Cemetery at Phelps. Arrangements are under direction of the R.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home of Phelps.
Jacqueline Akers
Jacqueline Akers, 56 of Hatfield, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010, at the Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born January 15, 1954 in Williamson, W. Va., the daughter of the late Stanley Jack Briggs and Mary Naomi Hatfield Briggs.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and Daniel Briggs and two sisters, Abigail Prater and Dorothy Blankenship.
Survivors include her husband, Ermel Lee Akers of Hatfield, Ky.; one son, David Lendell (Gina) Francisco of Pikeville; one daughter, Mary Naomi Ortega of Pikeville; three brothers, Thomas Edward (Beatrice) Briggs of Tenn., Jerry Lee (Joy) Briggs of Phelps, and Raymond Morriss Briggs of Phelps; and one grandson, Gavin Lucas Francisco.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 2, 2011 at 1 p.m. at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel, with Richard McKinney officiating. Burial will follow in the Pinson Cemetery, Rockhouse Fork, Sidney, KY, with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Funeral Home Chapel, with special services both nights at 7 p.m. R. E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry is in charge of arrangements.
Ralph Hamilton
Ralph Carlos Hamilton “BuBo”, 32, of Pike County, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2010, at his home.
He was born in Pike County, Dec. 6, 1978, the son of Ralph Madden, and the late Dena Hamilton.
He was a disabled construction worker.
Besides his mom, he was preceded in death by one sister, Nicole Hamilton.
He is survived by two daughters, Haley and Dena Hamilton, both of Pikeville; one son, Jacob Hamilton of Pikeville; a step mom, Suzette Mullins; one brother, Daniel Harris of Pikeville; and one sister, Thelma Ratliff of Biloxi, Miss.
Special services will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday night.
The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, at Island Creek Freewill Baptist Church, with ministers Bud Crum and Donnie Harris officiating. Burial followed in the Hamilton Family Cemetery, Ashcamp. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas and Son Funeral Home.
Paul Lumpkins
Paul Lumpkins, 31, of Paintsville, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010, at his home.
He was born in Lima, Ohio, Nov. 16, 1979, the son of Cheryl Chandler Gray of Thelma, and the late Glenn Edward Lumpkins.
He was a Carpentry worker; and a member of Lima Missionary Baptist Church in Lima, Ohio.
Besides his mother, he is survived by a son, Glenneth McCombs of Springfield, Ohio; four daughters, Keely Lumpkins of Water Valley, Miss., Teddra McCombs of Springfiled, Ohio, Nevaeh Williams of Lima, Ohio, and Khloe Lumpkins of Columbus Grove, Ohio; a brother, Steven Lumpkins of Pikeville, Ky; three sisters, Amy Painter and Angie Painter of Lima, Ohio, and Kimberly Lumpkins of Paintsville; and a grandfather, Paul Eugene Lumpkins of Delphos, Ohio.
The visitation will take place after 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011, at the Nelson Frazier Funeral Home in Martin.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, at the funeral home, with Jason Hutchinson officiating. Burial will follow in the Family Cemetery (Stephens Branch) Martin, Kentucky. Arrangements are under direction of Nelson Frazier Funeral Home.
Freddie Smith
Freddie Smith, 83 of McCarr, Ky. passed away Thursday, December 30, 2010 at her residence.
She was born May 23, 1927 at McVeigh, Ky. the daughter of the late Francis M. and Melda Runyon Hatfield.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Langley Smith; brother, Hugh C. Hatfield and sisters, Jane H. Smith, Martha Smith, Betty Sue Farley and Emma Lee Anderson.
She was a homemaker and a member of the First Samaria Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Peggy (Duke) Blackburn of McCarr, Ky.; son, Tommy M. Smith of Pikeville, Ky.; sisters, Kate Keesee of Virginia Beach, Va. and Cordia (Ralph) Swafford of Logan, W. Va.; grandsons, Greg (Nickie) Blackburn, Mark D. Blackburn and Tommy Dale Smith; granddaughter, Shannon (Adam) Shelley; great grandson, Matthew Langley Blackburn and a host of family and friends.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 2, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. in the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Jeff Dotson and other Primitive Baptist Ministers officiating. Carl B. "Carbide" Caines, 68, of Belfry, Kentucky passed away Tuesday, October 31, 2006 at St. Joe's Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky.
Carbide was born March 11, 1938 in Pike County Kentucky to the late Chester B. Caines and Lorraine Thacker Smith of Belfry, Kentucky. He was a general laborer and of Church of God faith.
Other than his father, preceding him in death are his step father Earnest Smith and two brothers: Elmer Smith and Bobby Lee Caines.
Surviving him other than his mother are three brothers: Tilden M. (Shirley) Caines of South Williamson, Kentucky, Earnest Emmett Smith of McVeigh, Kentucky, and Chester Smith of Columbus, Ohio and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Friends may call after 7:00 pm Thursday, November 2, 2006 at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home in Belfry, Kentucky.
Funeral services are 1:00 pm Friday, November 3, 2006 at Rogers Funeral Home with Pastor Ron Blevins officiating. Interment is at Mountain View Memory Gardens in Huddy, Kentucky.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Virginia Mae Campbell, 86, of Delbarton, W.Va., passed away Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006, at her residence.
She was born Feb. 1, 1920, at McCarr, KY, the daughter of the late William Green and Sarah Lou Moore.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Campbell was also preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Robert Campbell; one son, James Donald Campbell; four sisters and seven brothers.
A homemaker, she was of the Pentecostal faith, and member of the VFW Women's Auxiliary of Dade City, Fla.
Survivors include three sons, Calvin Lee (Rose) Campbell of McCarr, KY, William Robert (Regina) Campbell of Albany, KY, and Frederick Bruce (Donna) Campbell of Delbarton, W.Va., one stepson, Elmer f. Campbell of Hockessin, Del.; one daughter, Carolyn Lou Campbell Lankford of Matewan, W.Va.
Other survivors include one sister, Esther Ruth Brown of Iaeger, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006, at Rogers Funeral Home at Belfry, KY, with Carl Wolford officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens at Huddy, Ky.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8, 2006, and Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, at the funeral home. Special services are set for 7 p.m. Monday night with Arville Cline.
