Paul Canterbury, 73, well known area community leader and resident of South Williamson, Kentucky passed away Saturday, August 19, 2006, of complication from pneumonia in the Veteran’s Hospital, Huntington, West Virginia.
Born January 8, 1933 in Lenore, West Virginia, Paul was the son of the late Percy Canterbury and the late Laura Canterbury Morrisette. Also preceding him in death were one sister, Pauline Runyon and one granddaughter, Allison Rose Gillman.
Though Paul was retired from the railroad, he was far from being retired from his tireless community involvement. He was chairman the Pike County Housing Authority for the past 25 years as well as being a prominent and active member of the Kentucky Democratic Party where he served in many official roles. Paul’s countless volunteer hours helped to strengthen the Democratic Party in Pike County, Kentucky, and in 1992, he was the recipient of the “the Mr. Democrat” Award.
One of the largest supporters of the Pond Creek Area, Paul was instrumental in the relief efforts during the 1977 flood. He worked diligently to ensure that help was available to area residents to the extent he opened his home to more than 25 people and their pets.
Paul was involved with Habitat for Humanity, traveling throughout the United States working on location with President Jimmy Carter.
He was a Kentucky Colonel, a 41 year member of the Stone Lodge, a member of O’Brien Lodge # 101 and Commandery in Williamson, West Virginia, Bani Keden in Charleston, West Virginia, chairman of the Railroad Retirees, a veteran of the United States Army, and member of the First Baptist Church of Williamson.
Paul was an avid fisherman, spending winters in Florida fishing. He loved returning home to share his fish was friends and family.
He was a friend to all, never hesitating to help those in need.
Paul was devoted to his family, especially his granddaughter Amanda.
Surviving Paul are his wife Toni Canterbury of South Williamson; one daughter Paula Gillman and her husband Don of Rock Hill, South Carolina; a granddaughter, Amanda Laura Gillman of Rock Hill; and one brother Mose Canterbury and his wife Bess of Gallipolis, Ohio.
Visitation is from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday, August 21, 2006, at Rogers Funeral Home in Belfry, Kentucky.
Funeral services are 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 22, 2006 at the First Baptist Church in Williamson, West Virginia with Rev. Roger Tinnel officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain View Memory Gardens in Maher, West Virginia.
Active pallbearers include John Mark Hubbard, Jerry Mounts, Grant Preece, Steve Wilson, and Larry Hurley. Honorary pallbearers are Larry Blackburn, Jess Hagaman, Ralph Casey, Gary Johnson, Keith Hall, Jimmy Bevins, Homer Ray Preece, Bill Tussey, and Jim Preston.

Phillip E. Case, 69, of Canada, Kentucky passed away Sunday, October 15, 2006 at the Pikeville Medical Center in Pikeville, Kentucky.
Phillip was born February 4, 1937 in Brushy, Kentucky to the late Elder Emmett and Eula Lowe Case.
He was a retired coal operator from Case Coal Corporation which he owned with his brothers. He was also a member of Stone Lodge # 890 F. & A.M., Stone Shrine Club, and El Hasa Temple located in Ashland, Kentucky. Phillip was of Old Regular Baptist faith.
Surviving him are his wife, Shirlene Booth Case, two daughters: Sandra Case (Derrick) Justice of Belfry, Kentucky, and Pamela Case (Vince) Gustafson of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and four grandchildren: Dusty Justice of South Point Ohio, Chad Justice of Lexington, Kentucky, Phillip Cole Gustafson of Chapel Hill, and Jackson Reid Gustafson also of Chapel Hill.. He is also survived by one brother, Paul D. (Jamie) Case of Sidney, Kentucky, two sisters: Magdeline Case Maynard of Talbot, Tennessee, and HIlda Case Gooslin of New Carlisle, Ohio, and his mother-in-law Estella Booth of Williamson, West Virginia.
Other than his parents preceding him in death were two brother, Bennett Leon Case and Moses Case and an infant sister Imalee Case.
Friends may call Tuesday, October 17, 2006 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Rogers Funeral Home in Belfry, Kentucky. There will be a special service at 7:00 pm with Rev. Bob Norman.
Funeral services are 1:00 pm Wednesday, October 18, 2006 at Rogers Funeral Home with Tommy Reed officiating. Interment is at Mountain View Memory Gardens in Huddy, Kentucky.
Pallbearers are Dusty Justice, Joey Thacker, Todd Case, Mitch Case, Kirby Case, and Benji Case.

Cleve "Dude" Chapman, 88, of Huddy, Kentucky went home to be with the Lord Sunday, October 15, 2006 while in the Skilled Care Nursing Facility at the South Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Kentucky.
Born November 6, 1917 in Canada, Kentucky to the late Cleve and Cora Alice (West) Chapman, Dude was a retired coal miner from Eastern Coal and a member of Little Stone Regular Baptist Church.
Preceding him in death other than his parents are his wife: Ruby (Curry) Chapman who passed away March 9, 1995; a special niece Pat (Chapman) Lowe who passed away September 23, 2004.
Also preceding him in death an infant daughter, Elsie Mae; one brother: Fid Chapman; and two sisters: Vada (Chapman) Smith and Ida (Chapman) Smith.
Surviving him are nephews: Wade (Sue) Smith of Pigeon Roost, Kentucky, Roosevelt (Bobbie) Smith of Winnabow, North Carolina, Eddie (Ruby) Smith of Pikeville, Kentucky, Ray Chapman of Williamson, West Virginia, and Kenneth Earl Chapman of Blackberry, Kentucky; and nieces: Jean Farley and Sue Bostic both of Stone, Kentucky; great niece and caregiver, Sharon Farley, and several other great nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at Rogers Funeral Home in Belfry, Kentucky after 6:00 pm, Monday, October 16, 2006 with special services at 7:00 pm.
Funeral services are 1:30 pm Tuesday, October 17, 2006 at Rogers Funeral Home with Raymond Smith, Larry Thacker, Bobby Scott, Lacy Walters, and Billy Cochran officiating. Nephews and great nephews will serve as pallbearers with Honorary Pallbearers being Kenneth Lowe, Jimmy Smith, Ronnie Dale Church, Edgar Ramey, and Sam McCown.
Interment will follow at Smith Cemetery in Sidney, Kentucky.

Helen Loraine (Blackburn) Chapman, 83, of Canada, KY, completed her life of service on December 20, 2006.
She was born April 30, 1923 at Huddy, KY, the daughter of the late Lell and Sarah Blackburn. She was married on December 4, 1945 and enjoyed 40 years with her husband, William “Frankie” Chapman, before his passing on June 2, 1986.
Survivors include: daughter, Sheila Ann Varney of Canada, KY; grandsons, Jason Lell (LaDonna) Chapman of Madison, AL and Chadwick Ray Varney of Morehead, KY; granddaughter, Stephanie (Edward) Varney-Chang of Ann Arbor, MI; sisters, Thelma Hall of Morehead, KY, Rosetta Williams and Effie Harlow, both of Huddy, KY; granddaughters, Grace Anne and Ella Bess Chapman of Madison, AL and Olivia Chang of Ann Arbor, MI, and daughter-in-law Lois Chapman Derosett of Canada.
Preceding her in death: son, Lell Chapman; son-in-law, Mickey Ray Varney; sisters, Meldia May, Nolecca May, Lucille Tuchton, and LeaBell Blackburn; brothers, Clarence, Rush, Ralph and Tunice Blackburn.
Helen was a life member of the Old Pond Primitive Baptist Church and faithfully served the Lord throughout her life. Her greatest gift was her love which had no boundaries and touched the lives of all who knew her. She will live forever in the hearts of those who love her.
We know by the grace of God that our loss is His eternal gain. In memory of our mother and grandmother, days of sadness will come and silent tears will often flow. We feel sure your prayers were answered and your Savior took you home. We all loved you dearly but our dear Lord loved you best so……………sleep on…………dear mother….dear grandmother………sleep on.
Funeral services will be held at Rogers Funeral Home on Sunday, December 24, at 1:30 PM with Pastor Ron Blevins officiating. Burial will follow in the Chapman-Baldwin Family Cemetery at Canada, KY.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate her life at Rogers Funeral Home beginning at 6 PM on Friday, December 22 and Saturday, December 23. Special services will be held each night at 7 PM.

James Darrell “Jim Tom” Childress, 54, of McAndrews, Kentucky passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at his residence.
Born April 30, 1952, to late Robert Raymond and Alice Jean Howell Childress, James was a retired coalminer.
Surviving him: sons, Kevin Chadwick Childress of McAndrews, Kentucky, James Darrell Childress also of McAndrews; daughter, Hailey Nicole Childress of Sprigg, West Virginia; stepdaughter Crystal Blair of Canada, Kentucky; brothers, Danny Joe Childress of Chattaroy, West Virginia, David Keith Childress of Williamson, West Virginia and Danny Ray Childress also of Williamson, West Virginia; sisters, Faye Brugh of Pinsonfork, Kentucky, Shelia Whitt of McAndrews, Kentucky, Gloria Kennedy of Taylor, Michigan, and Michaelle Wallen of Williamson, West Virginia; granddaughter, Destiny Faith Childress; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death: one brother, Bobby Childress and companion, Judy Cowan.
Visitation is 6:00 p.m. Thursday, May 18, 2006 and Friday, May 19, 2006 at Rogers Funeral Home in Belfry, Kentucky.
Funeral service is 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2006 at Rogers Funeral Home with Freddie Lewis officiating.

Bearl Church, 91, of Sidney, Kentucky passed away Sunday, August 6, 2007 at his residence.
Born January 22, 1915, in Pike County, Kentucky, Bearl was the son of the late Sam and Addie Church.
Bearl was a retired coal miner and of Old Regular Baptist Faith.
He left behind his chosen family, Michael and Tammy Smith of Sidney with whom he made his home; three honorary grandchildren, Sara Michelle Smith and Terry of Maher, West Virginia, Joseph Michael and Raven Rachelle Smith of Sidney, and grandchildren, Samantha, Christopher, and Anthony. He is also survived by one niece, Helen of Pennsylvania; a special niece, Elaine Hunt, other nieces, Teresa, Ginger, Donna, Candy, Barb, Jackie, and Beverly; nephews, Hi Edgar and Earl Wayne Maynard; special friends Hardy Rose, Cathy Fuston and her children, and Dorothy all of Bowling Green, Kentucky as well as a host of other friends.
Preceding him in death other than his parents are his wife, Belvie Maynard Church, an infant son, one brother, Earl Church, and one sister, Alice Hager.
Visitation is after 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 8, 2006 with special service at 7:30 p.m.
Funeral service is noon, Wednesday, August 8, 2006 at Rogers Funeral Home with Rev. William Akers officiating with burial following at Monroe Smith Cemetery in Sidney. Pallbearers are Roger T. Young, James McCoy, Hardy Rose, Hi Maynard, Earl Wayne Maynard, Rick Thacker, and Elaine Hunt.

Berl Church, 84, of Ransom, Kentucky passed away Saturday, July 15, 2006 at Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Kentucky.
Born January 14, 1922 in Pike County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late James and Rebecca Church.
Disabled all of his life, he made his residence with his nephew and his wife Michael and Tonya Church of Ransom.
Surviving him other than his nephew and his wife are two brothers Sylvannis (Hazel) Church and Chester (Ada Jean) Church of Ransom; a twin sister Perlie Maynard of Florida and sister Mary
Alice Cook of Pinsonfork, Kentucky along with several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were seven brothers Floyd, Delmer, Newman, Truman, Garlie, Lewis, and Joe Church, and one sister Eula Roberts.
Visitation will be after 6:00 p.m. Sunday, July 16, 2006, and Monday, July 17, 2006 with special services both nights at 7:00 p.m. at Bluesprings Freewill Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2006, at Bluesprings Freewill Baptist Church with Emery Varney, Larry Hubbard and others officiating. Burial will be in Davis Memorial Gardens in Stone, Kentucky.

James Michael Clay, 53, of Williamson, West Virginia passed away at his residence Tuesday, July 11, 2006.
James was born August 22, 1952 in Matewan, West Virginia.
He was a member of the Mountain Springs Freewill Baptist Church in Delbarton, West Virginia.
Surviving him are his mother Betty Joe Clay Evans, stepfather Donald E. Evans, one brother Gregory Evans of Laurel Creek, West Virginia, and one sister Robin Spence of Delbarton, West Virginia.
Visitation will be after 6:00 p.m. Thursday, July 13, 2006 at Rogers Funeral Home in Belfry, Kentucky.
Funeral services will be Friday, July 14, 2006 at Rogers Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Lenore Memorial Gardens, Lenore, West Virginia.
Friends will serve as pallbearers.
