Virginia Charles McCoy, 85 of McAndrews, Ky. passed away
Tuesday morning, January 7, 2014 at her home surrounded by her loving
family and friends.
She was born July 8, 1928 at Stopover, Ky. the daughter of the late
Julius and Bessie Blankenship Charles. She was also preceded in death
by her husband of 50 years, Phillip McCoy in 1994; brothers, Fred and
Buster (Buck) Charles and sisters, Louvinnia Blankenship, Zettia Ward
and Geraldine Clevenger.
She was a homemaker and a stay at home Mother, having never worked outside of her
home. She was a caring and giving person who loved all and an awesome cook. Her biscuits
and gravy will be long remembered and her welcoming 'front porch' where she hosted and
entertained friends and family and it became her retreat. She was a wonderful wife, mother,
sister, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend of all who knew her and she made a
lasting impression on everyone. She was a clean freak, who kept a spotless home and she
enjoyed her flowers and her gardening. Her memory and friendship will live on.
Survivors include her children, Ervin (Peggy) McCoy, Orethal (Richard) Calhoun and
Revetta (Mike) Hunter; 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren; brothers, James (Erma)
Charles and Frank (Karen) Charles; many nieces and nephews and her special friend and
neighbor, Marilyn Coleman.
Funeral services will be held Friday, January 10, 2014 at 11 AM at the Sharondale Church of
Christ with Bob Werntz officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens,
Huddy, Ky. with Travis Lequire, Ervin McCoy, Richard Calhoun, Mike Hunter, Lauchey
McCoy, Dismas Schmelzer, Cody Schmelzer, Tony Schmelzer and Duane McCoy serving as
pallbearers.
Visitation will be held Thursday night from 6 - 9 PM in the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home
Chapel with special services at 7 PM.
Joe E. Scott, born February 14, 1934, went home to spend eternity in
Heaven on January 7, 2014. He was the son of the late Joseph C. Scott and
Ethel McCoy May. He is preceded in death by both parents, his first wife,
Janelle Leedy Scott; children, Margaret E. Smith and Montis E. Scott;
grandson, Joseph Verlin "JoJo" Smith and brothers, Jessie L. Varney and
Reaford Smith.
Joe is a well loved and respected member and deacon in the Octavia
Freewill Baptist Church, McAndrews, Ky. He has always cherished and
enjoyed his church family. He has always worked hard and took care of
his family. He has worn many hats during his working career; he was a ditchdigger for the gas
company, he worked the hard, rugged life of a logger. He drove a log truck as well as a coal
truck, working on them and maintaining them. While living in Troy, Ohio he worked a short
stent on the railroad; he worked for Jim City Mattress Co.; also working at Spring Hill Nursery.
He served as service manager for B. F. Goodrich Company, working at a Tire place on his days
off. When he moved back to Kentucky, he began working in the coal mines, He worked for
several mines before he went to Eastern Coal Co. from which he retired. He enjoyed his horses,
dogs and loved to garden. He loved to share his bounty, whether it was vegetables from his
garden or a big kettle of soup at church functions. He will be sadly missed not only by his
family, but by his many friends.
He is survived by his wife, Alene Scott; children, Joeyann (Billy) Church, Bill E. (Edith)
Scott, Belle (Danny) Hackney, Maria (Duffy) Ferrell, Tammy Scott (Joshua Points), Harvey
(Kendra) Maynard; daughter-in-law, Lynn Scott; brother, Terry Paul (Linda) May; sister,
Kathleen (Richard) Blackburn; sister-in-law, Linda Smith; 28 grandchildren, 37 great
grandchildren and many other family and friends.
Visitation will be Thursday and Friday beginning at 6 PM at the Octavia Freewill Baptist
Church with services both nights at 7 PM.
His funeral will be conducted at 11 AM Saturday at the Church with Gerria Reynolds and
Dennis Hinkle in charge. He will be laid to rest Saturday, January 11, 2014 at the Mountain
View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Ky. with grandsons serving as pallbearers. Honorary
pallbearers are his brothers in Christ of the Octavia Freewill Baptist Church.
Ella Jean Maynard-Cook, 67 of McCarr passed away Thursday,
January 9, 2014 at the Pikeville Medical Center, Pikeville, KY.
Ella was born December 19, 1946 the daughter of the late Eugene
and Virginia Ruth Mounts Maynard. Ella was also preceded in death by
her husband Roger Dale Cook as well as her brother Kermit Maynard.
Ella was a former beautician and a member of the House of Prayer
Church of Varney, WV.
Ella is survived by her children; Tangi (Van) Gibbs of Hatfield, KY,
Mark (Amy) Cook of Forest Hills, KY and Melissa (Shawn) Tackett of Winchester, KY. One
sister; Alice Faye Pinson of Matewan, W.V. four sister-in-laws; Amy Maynard of Edgardon,
W.V., Joann Bowers of McCarr, KY., Judy Mapes of Phelps, KY., and Linda Mapes of
Freeburn, KY. She is also survived by ten grandchildren; Ashley Childress, James Hardin, Matt
Gibbs, Stevan Gibbs, Zack Gibbs, Taylor Cook, Grayson Cook, Taveon Hunter, Shawna
Tackett and Megan Tackett and two great grandchildren; Ashton Childress and Mason Gibbs
and a special friend; John Wallace.
Funeral Services will be at 2 PM on Saturday January 11, 2014 at R.E Rogers Funeral Home
Chapel with Barry Lester officiating. Burial will follow at Buskirk Cemetery, McCarr, KY.,
with James Hardin, Grayson Cook, Taveon Hunter, Matt, Stevan, and Zack Gibbs, Scott and
Dave Maynard, Cody New and Greg Smith serving as pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers are
Ashton Childress and Mason Gibbs.
Visitation will be held Friday night from 6 - 9 PM in the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel.
John Cleveland "Peve" Phillips, 68 of Williamson, WV passed
away Sunday, January 12, 2014 at the Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born January 27, 1945 in Williamson, WV the son of the
late Maynard Phillips and Mary Maynard Phillips Brown. He was
also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ellen Phillips.
Peve was a retired engineer with the Railroad; a member of
Williamson Moose Lodge #1613; Williamson Elks Lodge #1408
and a member of the Slaters Branch Church of Christ.
Survivors include his loving children, John M. (Lisa) Phillips of
Burlington, KY, Tabitha Phillips of Barboursville, WV and Amy Phillips Elliott of Loris, SC;
sister, Brenda Phillips Hall of Lexington, KY; grandchildren, Ian (Aimee) Phillips, Matthew
Phillips, Jordan Phillips, Blake Phillips, Nikki Phillips and Grayson Elliott; nephew, Jason
(Kayla) Norman of Lexington, KY; great nephew, Braxton Norman and great nieces, Jacee and
Bristol Norman and a host of other loving friends.
There will not be any services, per his request. He will be cremated. In lieu of flowers,

Audra Denise Reed, 53 of Williamson, WV. passed away Monday January 13, 2014 at the
South Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital. She was born October 15, 1960 at
Greenfield, OH, to the late Carl G. and Esther K. Henry Spangler. She was also preceded in
death by her husband, Conard Reed.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Living Waters Church.
She is survived by two brothers, Roger Eugene (Stacey) Spangler of Washington
Courthouse, OH, and Steven (Tammy) Fountain of Washington Courthouse, OH; one sister,
Ruth Ann Young of Hamilton, OH; three nephews, Brad Spangler of Washington Courthouse,
OH, Hayden Armstrong of Washington Courthouse, OH, and Devin Powell of Washington
Courthouse, OH; two nieces, Belynda Dannaker of Washington Courthouse, OH and Deanelle
Interior; special friends, Tom and Lisa Parker and caregivers; Charlotte and Sandra.
Visitation will be from 11 AM untill 1 PM Thursday January 16, 2014 at R. E. Rogers
Funeral Home with her funeral services at 1 PM with Jay West officiating. Burial will follow at
Rutherford Cemetery, Huddy, KY, with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
Dorthea Mae Deskins, 76 of Hatfield, Ky. passed away Saturday,
January 18, 2014 at the Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born September 10, 1937 at Whitepost, Ky. the daughter of
the late Thomas Roy and Mary Victoria Harrison Nichols. She was also
preceded in death by two infant children; one grandson and three
brothers, J. T., Wallace and Johnny Nichols. She was a former
employee of the Pike County Board of Education as a bus driver and
had worked at the old Justice Drive Inn. She loved the Lord and was of
the Freewill Baptist Faith.
Survivors include her husband, Loranza Deskins of Hatfield, Ky.; children, Junia A. (Danny)
Carroll of Pinsonfork, KY, Virginia L. Darlucio, Meshoia S. (Roger) Green and Robert D.
Deskins all of Hatfield, Ky. and Mary M. (Eddie) Hunter of Sidney, Ky. and several adoptive
children whom she help raise. Other survivors are one brother, Estil A. (Sue) Nichols of
Sheffield Lake, Ohio; sister-in-law, Dorthy Nichols of Vermillion, Ohio; seventeen
grandchildren; ten great grandchildren and a host of other family and friends.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at 2 PM in the R. E. Rogers
Funeral Home Chapel with Eddie Overstreet and others officiating. Burial will follow in the
Family Cemetery, Hatfield, Ky. with family and friends serving as pallbearers. Visitation will
be held from 6 - 9 PM Monday and Tuesday at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home with special
services both nights at 7 PM.
Effie Blackburn Harlow, 84 of Huddy, Ky. went home to be with her
Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at her home Thursday, January 23
surrounded by her loved ones.
She was born May 7, 1929 at Huddy, Ky. the daughter of the late Lell
and Sarah Blackburn. She was preceded in death by her loving husband,
whom she is now joined with, Ray Deward Harlow; four brothers, Ralph
Blackburn, Tunis Blackburn, Clarence Blackburn and Rush Blackburn;
seven sisters, Nolecca May, Lucille Tuchon, Meldia May, Thelma Hall,
Rosetta Williams, LeaBell Blackburn and Helen Chapman and one
grandson, Nathan Harold Helton.
She was retired as the Director of the Belfry Senior Citizens and a member of the Old Pond
Primitive Baptist Church.
She is survived by her son, Rickey (Liz) Harlow of Hindman, Ky.; a daughter, Elaine (Greg)
Helton of Huddy, Ky.; five grandchildren, Rickey Dean Harlow, Darrell Keith Helton, Jennifer
(Jason) Sesco, Richard (Alysia) Harlow and Justin Harlow; five great grandchildren, Chase
Harlow, Whitney Brook Helton, Isabella Harlow, Landon Ray Harlow and Katie Harlow and a
host of other family and friends.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 26, 2014 at 1 PM in the R. E. Rogers Funeral
Home Chapel with Primitive Baptist Ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain
View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Ky. with Rickey Dean Harlow, Darrell Keith Helton, Richard
Harlow, Justin Harlow and Jason Sesco serving as pallbearers.
Visitation will be held Saturday, January 25, 2014 from 6 - 9 PM at the Funeral Home with
special services at 7 PM.
