Emery Varney, age 69 of Canada, KY, passed away Saturday, February
1, 2014 at St. Mary's Hospital in Huntington, WV. He was born January
21, 1945 in Pike County, Ky, to the late Fritz and Gabriella Ratliff Varney.
He is also preceded in death by his wife; Barbara Sue Varney and sisters;
Joyce May, Geraldine Mullins and Shirley Varney.
He was a retired coal miner from Eastern Coal Company and served as
minister of Bluesprings Freewill Baptist Church.
He is survived by one son, Emery Keith Varney of Canada, Ky; four
daughters, Lisa Marie Kidd, Rhonda Lynn (Bobby) Taylor and Ashley
Jane Varney all of Canada, Ky. and Pamela Sue (Brian) Harlow of Williamson, WV; three
brothers, Jim (Marsha) Varney of Wellington, KY, Glen (Nina) Varney of Canada, Ky. and
Robert (Brenda) Varney of Paintsville, Ky.; five sisters, Anita (Paul) Wolford of Linden, MI,
Jacquline (John) Coleman of Kimper, Ky., Debbie (Bruce) May and Loretta (John) Hiers both
of Canada, Ky. and Joan Snyder of Perrysburg, Ohio; ten grandchildren, Emery Keith Varney
Jr., Allison Jane Brown, Melinda Sue Adams, Meggan Michelle Varney, James Emery hackney,
Trista Nicole Williamson, Broderik Matthew Hackney, Lindsay Jade Harlow, Emily Alice
Taylor and Gracie Lynn Taylor and sixteen great grandchildren and a host of family and
friends.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at 1 PM at the Bluesprings
Freewill Baptist Church with Larry Hubbard and Floyd Church officiating. Burial will follow in
the Bluesprings Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery, Ransom, Ky. with family and friends
serving as pallbearers.
Visitation will be held after 6 PM Monday and Tuesday at the Church with special services
at 7 PM both nights.
Oma Lea Justice, 34 of Belfry, Ky. passed away Saturday, February 1,
2014 at the Appalachian Regional Hospital.
She was born October 4, 1979 at South Williamson, Ky. the daughter
of the Maxine (Mike) Thacker of Williamson, WV and the late Danny K.
Blankenship. She was also preceded in death by her grandmother, Oma
Blankenship and father-in-law, John William Justice.
She was a homemaker and of the Baptist Faith.
Other survivors include her husband, Jackie Allen Justice; children,
Shania Faith Blankenship and Joshua Tyler Thacker of Williamson, WV,
Alexis Diamond and Deanna Blankenship of the home; brothers, Carl Lee (Jeanetta) Beckett of
Williamson, WV and Ronnie Dow Francis of Dry Ridge, KY; special Aunt and Uncle, Henry
(Josie) Francis and a host of other family and friends.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at 1 PM in the R. E. Rogers
Funeral Home Chapel with Mike Bostic and Terry Varney officiating. Burial will follow in the
Buskirk Cemetery, Buskirk, Ky. with Jackie Justice, Carl Lee Beckett, Keith Spears, James
Gannon, Joshua Tyler Thacker and Mark Francis serving as pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 6 - 9 PM Monday and Tuesday at the Funeral Home with special
services Tuesday night at 7 PM.
Gary Douglas Shelton II, 38 of McAndrews, Ky.passed away January 27, 2014.
He was born July 4, 1975 in Pike County, Ky. the son of Gary Douglas Shelton Sr. of
McAndrews, Ky. and Betty Francis (Steve) Varney of Columbia, KY. Other survivors include
two daughters, Ashley Brown and Allison Shelton both of High Point, NC; granddaughter,
Nevaeh Brown of NC; sisters, Amy M. Smith and Sherry Bethea both of North Carolina;
brothers, Michael D. Stanley, Jason P. Shelton and Justin D. Varney all of North Carolina and a
host of nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at 12 Noon at the McVeigh
United Baptist Church with Orbie Justice and Ed Varney officiating.
Glenna Rae (Gooslin) Hatfield, 66 of McCarr, Ky. passed away at 11:33
PM on Sunday, February 2, 2014 at the Appalachian Regional Hospital in
South Williamson, Ky. She was born October 6, 1947 the daughter of the late
Douglas M., Sr. and Cuzzie Wallace Gooslin. Also preceding her in death
were brothers, Winston, Thomas Lee and Douglas M. Gooslin, Jr. and sisters,
Ruby Hardesty, Anna Lou Smith and Nina Mae Musick.
In addition to being a homemaker, Glenna was a past employee of the U.S.
Postal Service at McCarr, Ky. and a retiree from Wal-Mart Super Center at
South Williamson, Ky. She was a faithful member of the Samaria Primitive
Baptist Church at Ransom, Ky. where her sweet singing voice will be sadly missed.
Glenna is survived by her husband, Leslie D. Hatfield of McCarr; three children, Rhonda
Epling and Ronny Lee McClanahan of Richmond, VA and Jonathan McClanahan of Fort
Myers, FL; two step children, Jason Hatfield of Hardy, Ky. and Anthony Ward Hatfield of Inez,
Ky.; daughters-in-law, Gypsy McClanahan, Crystal Hatfield and Dencie Faye Hatfield; nine
grandchildren, Joshua and Taylor Epling, Emma, Ethan and Logan McClanahan, Virginia and
Anthony W. Hatfield Jr. and Camron and Caleb Hatfield. Surviving also are brothers, Otis
(Melissa) Gooslin, Jimmy Dale Gooslin, Gordon (Judy) Gooslin and Brian (Tammy) Gooslin;
sisters, Bonnie Young, Jacquelyn Kellione and Nancy (Paul) Cisco and sisters-in-law, Evelyn
and Donna Gooslin. Also mourning her passing are many nephews, nieces, friends and church
family.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 6, 2014 at 12 Noon in the R. E. Rogers
Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Paul Varney, Jeff Dotson, Shawn Dotson and Raymond
Stanley officiating. Burial will follow in the Alley Cemetery, Ransom, Ky. with her brothers
and nephews serving as pallbearers.
Visitation will be held Tuesday and Wednesday night from 6 - 9 PM in the Funeral Home
Chapel with special services both nights at 7 PM.
Anna Shirlene Parsley, 68 of Lenore, WV, passed away Monday
February 3, 2014 at the Williamson Memorial Hospital.
She was born March 6, 1945 to the late Alexander Lee and Martha
Bell Sheppard Evans. She was also preceded in death by her husband;
Robert Lee Parlsey brothers; Fredick Evans, Basil Evans, Ira Alonzo
Evans, Alvin Lee Evans and Lewis "Eddie" Evans and one sister;
Freda Lorrain Ooten.
She was a homemaker and of the Freewill Baptist Faith.
She is survived by two daughters; Roberta (Frank) Parlsey Evans of Delbarton, WV, and
Patricia "Trish" (Wesley) Parsley Bartram of Lenore, WV, one son; Jerry (Linda) Parlsey of
Lenore, WV, two brothers; Elijah Evans of Lenore, WV, and Alex Evans Jr., of Huntington,
WV, sister; Betty McCoy of Lenore, WV, four grandchildren; Robert Franklin Evans, Jerry
Allen Parsley Jr., Joshua Earl Evans and Jonathan Lee Parsley and a host of loving family and
friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 7, 2014 at 11 AM at the Nolan Freewill
Baptist Church with Ray Taylor and Gene Goodman officiating. Burial will follow in the
Parsley-White Cemetery, Laurel Creek, WV with her grandsons and nephews serving as

Susie Jane "Hopkins" Runyon 86, of Goody, Ky.and Vero Beach, Fl.
passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2014 of a sudden illness.
She was born June 25, 1927 at Goody, Ky. into the family of the late
Elder George Ester Hopkins and Minnie Bell Harris Hopkins. She was
also preceded in death by her loving husband of over 50 years, Saylor
Runyon Jr.; grandson, Wesley Michial Slater; brothers, George Ester
Hopkins, Jr., Edward Hopkins, Kenneth Hopkins and Thomas Hopkins
and one sister, Etta Ruth Hopkins.
Susie and Saylor resided for the first 5 years of their marriage at Stone, Ky. and they moved
to Goody in 1959 and resided for the rest of her life.
Susie was a retired Kindergarten teacher from the Pike County Board of Education, having
taught children at Forest Hills, Turkey Creek, Varney and South Williamson Elementary
Schools. She was a graduate of Belfry High School and Pikeville College where she received
her Masters Degree. She was a 30 year member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Soriety. Susie's
father was a charter member of the Salem Old Regular Baptist Church having established it in
1915 and The Hopkins Family have served as members for over 99 years. She was a member
of the Old Regular Baptist Church for over 63 years and was the longest surviving member to
date. Susie accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age and has served him
faithfully every day.
Survivors include one daughter, Pamela Runyon (Mickey) Slater of Forest Hills, Ky.; one
son, Randy (Jackie) Runyon of Danville, Ky., five grandchildren, Buffy Slater of Georgetown,
Ky., Dr. Matthew (Amber) Slater of Cincinnati, OH, Tiffany (Brian) Wells of Georgetown,
Ky., Kristin (Dave) Hufana of Georgetown, Ky. and Caleb Tyler Runyon of Lexington, Ky.;
five great grandchildren, Henry Salylor Matthew Slater, Emma Belle Slater, Katelyn Wells,
Jacob Wells and Sophia Hufana; two nieces, Rosemary Wilhite of Meta, Ky. and Medra Jane
Copley of Huntington, WV; two special friends, Ethel Collier of Sidney, Ky. and Inky Bevins
of Pikeville, Ky. and a host of other loving family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon Saturday, February 8, 2014 at Salem Old Regular
Baptist Church with Elder Danny Runyon and Tommy Dials officiating. Burial will follow in
Smith Cemetery, Sidney, Ky. with Dr. Matthew Slater, Caleb Runyon, Christopher Blackburn,
Scott Floro, Dale Williamson and Dr. Brian Lambert serving as pallbearers.
Visitation will be Friday, February 7, 2014 from 6 - 9 PM at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home

Coetta Ford, 48 of Cincinnati, OH formerly of McCarr, Ky. passed away Thursday, February
6, 2014 at her home.
She was born March 8, 1965 the daughter of the late William Randal Hyden and Judy Faye
Little. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Wilma Hyden.
She was a homemaker and a loving sister, mother and grandmother.
Survivors include three sons, Joshua Pauley of Lexington, Ky., Walter Ford Jr. of South
Williamson, Ky. and Anthony Ford of Williamson, WV; brothers, William Avery Hyden of
McCarr, Ky. and Jonathan Hyden of Cincinnati, Ohio; one sister, Rhonda Trent of West
Virginia and one granddaughter, Shyanna Pauley.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at 11 AM in the R. E. Rogers
Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Earl Coleman officiating. Burial will follow in the Anderson
Hatfield Cemetery, McCarr, Ky. with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
Visitation will be Monday, February 10, 2014 from 6 - 9 PM at the Funeral Home Chapel.
