Rita Ann (Leibee) (Sammons) Smith, age 72, of Pinsonfork, Kentucky (Formerly of
Forest Hills, Kentucky), passed away Monday, February 4, 2013 at Central Baptist Hospital,
Lexington, Kentucky. She was born August 18, 1940, the youngest of six children born to
Charles Edward and Aza (Rice) Leibee.
Mrs. Smith was a 1958 graduate of Belfry High School. Throughout most of her adult
life, she was a homemaker, holding all the other jobs the word entails. She was a fantastic cook,
and a talented craftsperson and artist. Later, she worked at the Williamson United Methodist
Church and at Food City, South Williamson, Kentucky.
Mrs. Smith also returned to college later in life, and earned Associate degrees in Business
Administration, Computer Science and Accounting from Southern West Virginia Community
College. She thereafter continued her educational pursuits at the University of Pikeville (then
Pikeville College), earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education (Grades 9-12),
with minors in Computer Science and Comprehensive Business, in 1994. Following attainment
of this degree, she worked as a substitute teacher for the Pike County Board of Education prior
to the illnesses which ended her career. She was a member of the Victory in Jesus Church,
Sidney, Kentucky.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by three brothers, Donald L.
Leibee, Charles H. Leibee, and Milton Leibee; and one sister, Kathleen (Leibee) Burchett. She
was also preceded in death by two dear mothers-in-law, Pricey (Varney) Kimberlain and Carol
Maxine "Ma" Smith.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, Roger L. Smith, who resides at the home.
Additionally, she is survived by four children: LeeAnn (Rick) Sammons Layne of
Nicholasville, Kentucky; Darrell Edward (Amy) Sammons of Crestview Hills, Kentucky;
Michael Keith (Sandi) Sammons of Chattanooga, Tennessee; John Mark Sammons of
Pinsonfork, Kentucky; four grandchildren, Jordan Layne, Ethan Sammons, Abby Sammons,
and Parker Sammons; two step-children, Tina Smith of Stone, Kentucky and Krystal (Smith)
Royster of Waterloo, Indiana; three step- grandchidlren, Trentity Lee Smith, Lijah Maximus
Royster, and Evie Alayna Royster. She is also survived by one brother, Johnnie Ray Leibee, of
Loraine, Ohio; an especially dear niece, Judy (Leon) Griffith, Lima, Ohio; a dear sister-in-law,
Nita Jackson, Forest Hills, Kentucky; and a host of additional nieces, nephews, family and
friends she held dear to her heart.
The family wishes to thank all their friends and family for their prayers, visits and
encouragement throughout their mother's illness.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 from 6 PM to 9 PM. at Rogers
Funeral Home, Belfry, Kentucky.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM Thursday, February 7, 2013 in the Rogers
Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Johnny Hatfield and Reverend Mike Smith officiating,
and with musical tributes by Keith Sammons and Ginger Hatfield. Interment will follow at
Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Kentucky., with Parker Sammons, Ethan Sammons,
Jerry Taylor, Rexel Nee Jackson II, Philip Moore, and attending nephews serving as
pallbearers; Honorary pallbearers will be Teddy Workman and attending members of the Roger
Roberts, Sidney E. Copley, W.L. Bostic, and Johnny Hatfield families.
A reception for family and friends will be held at the fellowship hall of the Forest Hills
Baptist Church following the burial.
Donald Lee Webb, 78, of Williamson, WV went to be with his
Lord and Savior on February 9th, 2013 at the Skilled Nursing Facility
in South Williamson, Ky.
Donald joins his beloved first child, Daniel Kent Webb, Mother
and Father, Foster and Fern Webb, two brothers Billy Webb of Rawl,
WVa and Roger Webb of Huntington, WV and a Special
Grandmother, Caldonia Curry.
He is survived by his Beautiful and Loving Wife of 56 years,
Lois Marie (Elkins) Webb, 5 children, Steve Webb of the home, Saundra Webb of Frankfort,
Ky, Nancy (Rick) Mullins of Sidney, Ky, Tammy (Ronnie) Estepp also of Sidney, Ky and
Connie (James) Kennedy of Louisville, Ky.
He was Blessed with 9 Grandchildren and 17 Great Grandchildren.
Donald is also survived by brothers Bobby and Jimmy Webb of Williamson, Danny Ray
Webb of TX, Dennis Webb of TN and Glenn Webb of OH; Sisters Ruth Curry of Georgetown,
KY Rosemary Forrester, OH Darlene Varney, Jeanean Cole and Janetta Ling all of Fl.
Officiating will be Pastors Gary Blackburn and Mark Jude from the Big Creek Freewill
Baptist Church of Hatfield, Ky where Donald was a faithful member.
Burial will be at Mountain View Memory Gardens at Huddy, Ky.
Pallbearers are Ricky Mullins, Ronnie Estepp, DJ Spry, Steve Dotson, Richard Mullins,
Anthony and Nick Pinson and Jason Runyon.
Donald will be greatly missed by a host of family and friends, and most especially by his
wife, kids and grandkids.
Viewing will be after 5:00 pm on Sunday, February 10th
at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home
Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:00 at the funeral home.
Carl Bruce Akers 56, of Matewan, WV passed away Wednesday February 13, 2013 at his
residence.
He was born May 21, 1956 in Pike County, Ky., to the late William Frank Akers and
Minnie York Akers. He was also preceded in death by two brothers; Billy Ray Akers and James
Monroe Akers.
He was a disabled county maintenance worker.
He is survived by one daughter, Carla Michelle (Aliff) Akers of McVeigh, Ky.; three
sons, David Keith Akers of Hardy, Ky., Carl Bruce Akers Jr. of Mt. Sterling, Ky. and Derrick
Shane Akers of Matewan, WV; brothers and sisters, Minnie (May) Akers, Frank Akers Jr.,
Donnie Gene Akers, Clara (Queen) Akers, Estil Paul Akers, Ronnie Gene Akers, Roger Lee
Akers, Michael Eugene Akers and Kathy (Hatfield) Akers and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 7 PM Friday February 15, 2013 at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home
with Shawn Ward officiating.
Visitation will be after 6 PM Friday night at the funeral home.
Gertrude Blackburn, 87, of Pinsonfork, Ky., passed away Saturday
February 16, 2013 at her residence. She was born May 3, 1925 at Pike
County, Ky. the daughter of the late William Jefferson and Nancy Ball
May. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Willie Estil
Blackburn; brothers, William Jefferson May Sr., Willard May, Rarry May,
Kelly May, Walter May and Bud May and sisters, Maude Gent and Pricey
Stanley.
Gertrude was a retired cook from the Pike County Board of
Education and a member of the Little Hope Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include her foster son, Robert (Brenda J.) Varney of Hager Hill, Ky.; brother,
Harold May of Canada, Ky.; sisters, Jeanette May and Ruth May Blackburn both of Pinsonfork,
Ky.; eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; host of
nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at 11 AM in the R. E.
Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Raymond Stanley, Frank Ball and Michael Elswick
officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackburn Family Cemetery, Pinsonfork, Ky. with
Christopher Williamson, Shawn Blackburn, Darren Varney and Hank Varney serving as
pallbearers.
Visitation will be held after 6 PM Monday and Tuesday at the Funeral Home Chapel with
special services both nights at 7 PM.
Earsel Hatfield, 64 of Phelps, Ky. passed away Sunday,
February 17, 2013 at the Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born March 11, 1948 at McAndrews, Ky. the son of the
late Sug and Florence Clevenger Hatfield. He was also preceded in
death by infant siblings.
Earsel was a coal miner for Excell Mining and formerly worked
at Babcock & Wilcox Company in Barberton, Ohio. He was a
musician and loved playing the Dobro, was an avid coon hunter and
was of the Church of Christ Faith.
Survivors include his loving wife, Donna Ruth Smith Hatfield of
Phelps, KY; daughters, Madonna (Mark) Hatfield of Warrenton, MO, Judy (Clyde) Dotson of
McCarr, KY, Trish (Jackie) Sturgeon of Raccoon, KY and Bobbie (Macky) Compton of
Pikeville, KY; sister, Geraldine (Joe) Cochran of Pinsonfork, KY; brother, Sherman (Maxie)
Hatfield of Elkhorn City, KY; grandchildren, Haley, Cory, August, Trey and Katie; step
grandchildren, Chassidy and Alexa and a host of other family and friends.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 21, 2013 at 1 PM in the R. E. Rogers
Funeral Home Chapel with Bob Werntz officiating. Burial will follow in the Hatfield Family
Cemetery, McAndrews, Ky. with Max Smith, Bruce Hatfield Jr., Macky Compton, Clyde
Dotson, Jackie Sturgeon, Robbie Hatfield, Joey Cochran and Earsel Bowman serving as
pallbearers.

Lunie Pricie Pinson, 87 of Toler, Ky. passed away Friday, February 22, 2013 a the South
Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital.
She was born January 27, 1926 at Ballfork, Ky. the daughter of the late Joe and Suzane
Stanley Ball. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Pinson; brother, Charles
Edward Ball and sisters, Vada Smith, Nancy Edwards, Viola Sparks, Bea Shultz, Mary Jane
Smith and Lula Pinson.
Pricie was a homemaker and a member of the Toler Freewill Baptist Church.
She is survived by nineteen nephews; twent-six nieces; several great nephews and neices
and a host of other family and friends.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at 11 AM in the R. E. Rogers
Funeral Home Chapel with Donnie Williamson officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain
View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Ky. with her great nephew, Garrick Hammons and other
nephews serving as pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 6 PM until 9 PM Monday at the Funeral Home Chapel.
Jonah Stump, 56, of Burnwell, Ky., passed away Saturday
February 23, 2013 at the Appalachian Regional Hospital.
He was born March 6, 1956 at Grundy, Va. to the late Ben and
Liza Justice Stump.
He was a member of the Gospel Revelation Tabernacle Church
and NO. 1 Carrier for the Williamson Daily News. Jonah Stump of
New Town was Carrier of the month for June, the Daily News senior
house-to-house carrier with 21 years on the job. According to Daily
News circulation manager John D. Ball, Stump serves 296 customers
at New Town. He began his tenure with the Daily News when he was
nine years old.
He is survived by two sisters; Maxine (Clyde) Whitt of Burnwell, Ky., and Martha Ann
Hite of Columbus, Ohio, and two brothers Cecil Justice of Vero Beach, Fl., and Benny Edward
Stump of Pikeville, Ky. and a host of loving family and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 P.M. Wednesday February 27, 2013 at the Gospel
Revelation Tabernacle Church with Delbert McCoy officiating. Burial will follow at the Family
Cemetery at Burnwell, Ky., with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
Visitation will be after 5 PM Monday and Tuesday night at the Church with special
services at 7 P.M.
