Montrula Blackburn, 65 of Toler, Ky. passed away Friday, August
2, 2013 at the South Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital.
She was born February 8, 1948 in Williamson, WV the daughter
of the late Willard and Flossie McCoy Blackburn. She was also
preceded in death by a brother, Conrad "Rod" Blackburn and a sister,
Brenda Gail Hackney.
She retired as a secretary in the dietary department of the Appalachian
Regional Hospital; a former treasurer of the Appalachian Regional
Hospital Local Union and she attended the Belfry Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Patricia "Patti" (Travis) Roberts of Burnwell, KY and
Darlene Stanley of Hardy, KY; sister-in-law, Donetta Blackburn of Burnwell, KY; niece,
Melissa Hinkle of TN; four nephews, Chad Hackney of Huddy, KY, Justin Roberts of Kenova,
WV, Tyler Blackburn of Williamson, WV and Wesley Blackburn of Burnwell, KY and a host
of other family and friends.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at 11 AM in the R. E. Rogers
Funeral Home Chapel with Buddy Kendrick officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain
View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Ky. with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
Visitation will be held after 6 PM Monday and Tuesday at the Funeral Home Chapel with
special services Tuesday at 7 PM.
Rev. Donald Vernon Bassham, 83 of Concord, Ga. passed away Thursday, August 1,
2013 in Ga.
He was born December 16, 1929 to the late Charles and Betty Hughes Bassham. He was
also preceded in death by his first wife, Laura Taylor Bassham.
Survivors include his second wife, Donna Bassham of Ga.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at Mountain View Memory
Gardens, Huddy, Ky. at 1 PM.
Jimmie Rudolph Carr, 81 of South Williamson, Ky. passed away Saturday, August 3,
2013 at St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington, WV.
Jimmie was born May 26, 1932 in Newport, Arkansas the son of the late Lee and Dallas
Fortenberry Carr. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Fern Carr; one brother,
Eddie Carr and one sister, Pat McCombs.
Jimmie was a retired veteran of the United States Air Force and a proud member of the
East Williamson Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Everette C. "Eddie" Jones Jr. of Summerville, SC; one
daughter, Lisa Struble of Pauline, SC; one brother, J. C. (Juanita) Carr of Flint, MI; two sisters,
Rayma (Pete) Cook of Indianola, MS and Louise Hunt of Wharton, Texas; four grandchildren,
Brenna Conrad, Tori Leggett, Emily Struble and Autumn Struble; four great grandchildren,
Eddie Conrad, Lane Conrad, Gunner Leggett and Saphira Gweltney and a host of other family
and friends.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM Wednessday, August 7, 2013 at the R. E. Rogers
Funeral Home Chapel with Donnie Ratliff officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View
Memory Gardens, Huddy, Ky. with Belfry Chapter #141 conducting military graveside
services.
Visitation will be held from 12 noon until time of the Funeral on Wednesday.
Ollie Mae Smith, 74 of Chattaroy, WV passed away Friday morning, August 9, 2013 at
her home of a lingering illness.
She was born April 2, 1939 at Chattaroy the daughter of the late Vernon and Lyda Gay
Smith Robertson. She was also preceded in death by a son, Gregory Smith and a brother, Henry
Vernon Robertson.
She was a homemaker, a loving wife, mother and sister.
Survivors include her husband, Buddy Smith of Chattaroy; daughter, Carla Gaye
McGraw of Teays Valley, WV; brothers, A.P. Robinson of Williamson, WV and William
Lowry Robertson of Geneva, Ohio; sisters, Exer Rebecca Norman of Circleville, Ohio and
Carolyn Sue Lockard of Belfry, KY and a host of other loving family and friends.
Visitation will be held Sunday, August 11, 2013 from 6 - 9 PM in the R. E. Rogers
Funeral Home Chapel.

Luevernie "Deskins" Thoman, 83 of Sidney, Ky passed away
Friday August 9, 2013 at her residence. She was born January 8, 1930 at
Williamson, WV to the late Riley and Barbara Bennett Bowens. She was
also preceded in death by one son; William Riley Bowens. She was
retired from the Pike County Board of Education as a cook.
She is survived by two daughters; Barbara (Jim) Brock of Sidney,
KY and Dianna Adkins (L. D. Jude Jr.) of Fort Gay, WV and one son;
John (Daphney) Bowens of Stone, KY. Three sisters: Yvonne Jewell,
Violia Stanley and Lorraine Varney and an abundant of special
grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 PM Monday August 12, 2013 at R. E. Rogers
Funeral Home with Bill Van Zant and Jeanie Maynard officiating. Burial will follow at
Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy, KY, with Jimmy Brock Jr., Timothy Brock, Mike
Adkins, Jeremy Porter, Paul Harrison, L. D. Jude Jr. and Jim Brock serving as pallbearers.

Ronnie Lee "Buck" Fields, 57 of Delbarton, WV passed away Sunday August 11, 2013 at
his residence.
He was born August 18, 1955 at South Williamson, KY to the late William Douglas and
Virginia Alice Woods Fields. He was preceded in death by one son; Ronnie Lee Fields Jr., one
grandson; Bryan Konner Singletary and one brother; William Douglas Fields Jr.
He was a retired coal miner, a member of the U. M. W. A. and a member ot the
Williamson Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his wife; Jolanda Fields of Delbarton, two daughters; Amanda Nichole
Fields of Bristol, TN and Rachel Wesselink of the home, two sons; Ryan Wesselink of the
home and Keven Douglas Fields of the home. Also surviving him: one sister; Tammy Pope of
Hickory, NC, three brothers; Gordon Fields of Granite Falls, IL, Bruce Fields of Granite Falls,
IL and Randy Fields of Turkey Creek, KY and three grandchildren; Joshua Hayden Singletary,
Lexee Singletary and Shenna Singletary.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Wednesday August 14, 2013 at R. E. Rogers
Funeral Home with Mikey Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain View Memory
Gardens, Huddy, Ky with Brian Wellman, Ryan Wesselink, Michael Pope, Hayden Singletary
and Jackie Cline serving as pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers will be Mike Pope.

Grover Lawrence Elswick, 90, of Canada, KY passed away
Saturday August 10, 2013 at his residence.
He was born September 30, 1922, at Canada, KY, to the late
Grover Clerence Elswick and Emma Blackburn Elswick Williamson. He
was also preceded in death by his wife; Rachel Elswick, daughter; Judy
Baker, infant daughter; Mary Elizabeth Elswick, grandson; Scott Baker,
brothers; Floyd, Bill, Lewis and Sonny Elswick, sisters; Emogene West,
Goldina Ray and Ina Gay Ray and son-in-law; Sidney Williamson.
He was a retired chief engineer for Cities Service Gas Company, a
member of the Big Creek Primitive Church and a veteran of the U. S. Army.
He is survived by one son; Lawrence (Helena) Elswick Jr., of Canada, KY, three
daughters; Connie (Mike) Chapman of Canada, KY, Patsy (Thomas) Blackburn of Canada KY,
and Madonna Williamson of Williamson, WV, fourteen grandchildren, twenty great
grandchildren and a host of loving family and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 AM, Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at R. E.
Rogers Funeral Home with Mike Elswick and the Big Creek Primitive Church officiating.
Burial will follow at the Elswick Cemetery, Canada, KY with grandsons and great grandsons
serving as pallbearers. Belfry Chapter #141 will conduct military graveside rites.
Visitation will be after 6 PM, Monday and Tuesday night, August 12 and 13, 2013, at the
funeral home with special services 7 PM Monday with Gary Thacker officiating and Tuesday
night 7 PM with the Big Creek Primitive Church officiating.
Doris Lucille Varney, 60 of Belfry, Ky. passed away suddenly
Wednesday night, August 14, 2013 in the Emergency Room of the
South Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital.
She was born April 4, 1953 in Williamson, WV the daughter of
Alma Salyers Varney of Belfry, Ky. and the late Richard Bruce
Varney. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Dreama Francis.
Doris was an employee of the South Williamson Wal-Mart, a
graduate of Belfry High
Besides her Mother she is survived by a brother, Bruce (Cecilia)
Varney of Belfry, KY; nephews, John Richard (Leona) Little and Bruce Varney II; nieces,
LaQuesta May and Holly Ann Varney; great nephew, Hunter Little and a host of loving
cousins, family and friends.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 18, 2013 at 2 PM in the R. E. Rogers
Funeral Home Chapel with Buddy Kendrick officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain
View Memory Gardens, Huddy, KY.
Visitation will be held after 6 PM Friday and Saturday at the Funeral Home Chapel with
special services Saturday night at 7 PM.
