David Oliver, 33, of Belfry, KY, passed away Friday, February 25,
2011, at the Charleston Area Medical Center.
Born October 29, 1977, in Belfry, Kentucky, he was the son of Dale
L. and Phyllis A. (Alley) Oliver of Belfry, Kentucky.
David was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lester George
Oliver Jr. and Delmer and Lorraine Alley.
He was a Coal Miner with Mingo Logan Coal.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one daughter, Aubree
Jade Oliver of Belfry, Kentucky; two sons, Dawson Chance Oliver
and David Chase Oliver both of Belfry, Kentucky; his Fiancee, Misty
Dillon ;two special young men in his life, Ethan and Jordon Dillon; two sisters, Mellissa
(Malcolm) Skeens, of Canada, Kentucky and Elizabeth Boyd of Belfry, Kentucky; two brothers,
Dale L. (Lynn) Oliver Jr. of Lenore, West Virginia and Daniel D. (Erin) Oliver of Pinsonfork,
Kentucky; and a host of loving family and friends.
Funeral Services will be held 12 noon Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at the Rogers Funeral
Home of Belfry, Kentucky with Buddy Kendrick and Dwayne Yates Officiating. Burial will
follow in the Alley Cemetery with Dale Oliver Jr., Daniel D. Oliver, John G. Hackney Jr.,
Malcolm Skeens, Adam Eastwood, David Michael Oliver and Kevin Oliver serving as
pallbearers. Visitation will be held after 6 P.M. Monday and Tuesday Evenings with special
services both nights at 7 P.M.
Barbara Gladys Elswick, 69, of Forest Hills, KY went home to be with
the Lord, Wednesday, March 2, 2011 in Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born November 16, 1941 in Pike County, Ky. the daughter of
the late John P. Elswick and Francis Chapman Elswick Daniels. In
addition to her parents she was preceded in death by paternal grandparents,
Charlie and Lucy Elswick and maternal grandparents, Benjamin and Fannie Chapman.
She was a homemaker and she loved cooking and gardening. She was
a member of the Leckieville Freewill Baptist Church.
She is survived by a brother, James (Jill) Stack; sister, Joan McCoy; special niece, Jacklyn
Amy Stack and special nephew, Jovie Eric Stack all of Forest Hills, Ky. and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 AM Saturday, March 5, 2011 at the R. E. Rogers
Funeral Home Chapel with Buddy Kendrick officiating. Burial will follow in the Williamson
Cemetery, Forest Hills, Ky. with family and friends serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be
held after 6 PM Thursday and Friday at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with special
services both nights at 7 PM with Lonnie Francis and Lee Dotson Jr. officiating.
Bill Rufus Harris 83, of Louisa, KY formerly of Ransom, Ky
passed away Tuesday March 15, 2011 at Three Rivers Medical Center
in Louisa, Ky. He was born December 25, 1927 in Ransom, Ky to the
late Roland and Lassie Hatfield Harris. He is also preceded in death by
one brother; Lucas Harris and one sister; Ruby Whitt. He was a retired
coal miner with Eastern Coal Company, a member of the U.M.W.A., a
veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include the mother of his children; JoAnn Scott New of
Bulls Gap, TN, one son; Billy Luther (Connie) Harris of Louisa, KY, three daughters; Sandra
Sue (Truman) Hinkle of Bulls Gap, Tn, Lois Jean Harris of Ransom, KY, and Dona Dean Hager
of Forest Hills, KY. Other family members; Ricky Dale (Alicia) Smith of Lexington, KY, and
Melinda Joyce (Freddie) Runyon of Ransom, KY, two sisters; Mary Smith of Ransom, KY and
Daryl Smith of Ransom, KY, eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren and a host of nieces
and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 AM Friday March 18, 2011 at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home
with Mike Smith officiating. Burial will follow at the Harris-Smith Cemetery at Ransom, KY
with family and friends serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be after 6 PM Wednesday night
and Thursday night at the funeral home with special services at 7 PM Thursday night.
Bessie Robinson Lowe, 94, of Williamson, WV, passsed away
Thursday March 17, 2011, at the Appalachian Regional Hospital E.R.
She was born August 26, 1916 in Pike County, KY daughter of the late
James A. Robinson and Matilda Stanley Robinson. She married
James
Edward Lowe on June 21, 1962 and he passed away on October 8,
1995. She was also preceded in death by brothers, Kenus Robinson,
William Burley Robinson, Joseph Robinson, Cleston Robinson, Johnny
Robinson and Elcaine Robinson and sisters, Gertrude Newsome and
Sarah Ann Maynard.
Bessie was baptized the third Sunday in September 1969 by Elders
Charlie Johnson and Henry Maynard. She took membership at the
Apple Orchard Regular Baptist Church the first Sunday in October, 1969.
Bessie is survived by a host of nieces and nephews and one special great great nephew,
Terry L. Workman Jr.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, March 19, 2011 at 2 PM in the R. E. Rogers Funeral
Home Chapel with Richard Staton and Gary Young officiating. Burial will follow in the
Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Ky. with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
Visitation will be held after 6 PM Friday, March 18, 2011 at the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home
Chapel with special services at 7 PM.
Sammy R. Ritz, 71, of Chattaroy, WV, passed away at his home on
March 20, 2011, after a long battle with cancer.
He was born May 7, 1939 in Mingo County, WV.
Sammy accepted the Lord on January 22, 2011 but due to his illness
was unable to be baptized. He was of the United Baptist Faith. He was
retired from Tramco where he worked as a mechanic. After retiring he
spent much of his time sitting by the lake doing one of his favorite
hobbies of fishing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Easter Ritz Harrison and
Jerry Harrison; one brother, George Harrison and one sister, Anita Evans.
He is survived by his loving companion of 23 years, June Diamond Johnson of whom he
made his home with. Two step children, Steve (Lora) Johnson of Canada, Ky. and Cindy
(Steven) Robinson of Prichard, WV and one stepgrandson. Four sons, Phillip Ritz of
Lexington, KY, Steve Ritz of Varney, KY, Robbie Ritz of Kimper, Ky. and Jamie Ritz of
Frankfort, Ky. and four grandchildren. Two brothers, Roy (Susie) Harrison of McAndrews, Ky.
and David (Anna) Harrison of North Matewan, WV; three sisters, Margaret Evans of
Paintsville, KY, Ada (David) Wolford of Red Jacket, WV and Deane New of Paintsville, Ky.
and a host of nieces, nephews and three special pets, Rosie, Skipper and Lily.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 1 PM in the R. E. Rogers
Funeral Home Chapel with Leonard Sesco officiating. Burial will follow in the Chattaroy
Community Cemetery, Chattaroy, WV with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
Visitation will be held from 6 till 10 PM Tuesday at R.E. Rogers Funeral Home with special
services at 7 PM with Earsel Ray Taylor officiating.
Barbara Sue Deskins, 67, of Ray, Michigan, formerly of Sidney, KY,
passed away Friday, March 18, 2011 at the Mt. Clemens Regional
Medical Center in Michigan.
She was born March 25, 1943 at Sidney, Ky. the daughter of the late
Omer and Gladys Crigger Williamson. She was also preceded in death
by her sister, Bessie M. Stacy and brothers, Clinton Jr. (C.J.)
Williamson, Clifford Williamson, Perry Williamson and Okie Williamson.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Dix Fork Old Regular Baptist Church.
Survivors include her loving husband, Onas Deskins, Jr. of Ray, MI; three sons, Michael
Deskins of Ray, MI, Mitchell (Debra) Deskins of Jackson, MI and Matthew (Nancy) Deskins of
Plainwell, MI; two sisters, Hazel (Bob) Thacker of Sidney, Ky. and Anna Baldwin of Sidney,
Ky.; brother-in-law, Jerry Stacy of Inez, Ky. and a special cousin, Brenda (Howard) Phillips of
Sidney, Ky. and a host of other family and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 25, 2011 at 11 AM at the Dix Fork Old Regular
Baptist Church with Lacy Walters officiating. Burial will follow in the Williamson Family
Cemetery, Sidney, Ky. with family and friends serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be held
after 6 PM Wednesday and Thursday at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with special
services Thursday night at 7 PM.
Anna Louise (McKee) Hankins, 91 a lifelong resident of Pond
Creek, entered into heaven on Monday, March 21, 2011. Anna is
preceded in death by her loving husband, Thomas Glenn, parents,
Robert and Mary (Coyer) McKee, siblings, Robert (Mary) McKee,
Mildred Dotson, Iva Dean (Elster) Clevenger, Hazel Fanto and Betty
Jane Phillips, two granddaughters, Wendy Suzanne and Sandra Beth Phillips.
Born in Borderland, WV on September 4, 1919, Anna was the
oldest of six children. She spent her younger years at McVeigh, Ky.
where she began a teaching career with an emergency certificate at age 16.
Anna is survived by one son, Thomas Glenn, Jr. "Tommy" (Dawn) of Chapmanville, WV
and four daughters, Mary Ann (Darrell) Williams of Galena, Ohio, Jennifer (Ed) Wilford of
Dublin, Ohio, Susie (Boyd) Phillips of Shelbyville, Ky. and Cindy (Rob) Robertson of
Hurricane, WV; 11 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and one great great grandson. She is
also survived by a special friend, Betty Canada.
Anna's teaching career that began at McVeigh, ended with retirement after years of teaching
at South Williamson Grade School. She touched many lives, even some students older than
she, since she began her career at a young age. She earned an Associates Degree from Pikeville
College and a Bachelor's degree from the University of Kentucky.
A member of the First Presbyterian Church in Williamson, WV, Anna taught Sunday School
for many years and was active in Women's Circle #3 and received Lifetime Membership to the
Women of the Church. Also, Anna was honored in 2006 with the Dedicated Service award.
Many years of volunteering at the Appalachian Regional Hospital gift shop helped fill her
retirement years. Anna enjoyed gardening, spoiling grandchildren and arranging flowers that
were donated to the ARH gift shop for resale and she was a former member of the Belfry Area
Women's Club. Anna enjoyed checking her email for notes from the family, reading and playing bridge.
Calling hours on Saturday evening, March 26, 2011 will be held at Rogers Funeral Home
from 6 till 9 PM. Funeral services will begin at 2 PM Sunday, March 27 at the First
Presbyterian Church, Williamson with Rev. Vaughn Smith and Pastor Terry Blankenship officiating.
