Paul David Smith age 78, of Hardy, KY, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 22, 2011 at his home in Hardy.
Paul was born April 25, 1933 in Pike County, Ky. to the late Wilson and Estalene Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife Maxine Smith.
He is survived by his daughter, Pamela S. Maynard of Ransom, Ky.; son, Stephen D. Smith of Stone, Ky.; granddaughters, Brittany and Katie Maynard; grandson, Corey Smith; sister, Mary E. Vance and two brothers, Gary Smith and Jerry D. Smith.
Starting early around the age of 8, he began to develop his mastery skill of the fiddle. Self taught and reading no music he has played old-time folk music all his life. He is recognized by the Augusta Heritage Center as an Appalachian Master.
Paul was named the worthy recipient of the prestigious Mike Seeger Annual National Folk Alliance Award in Memphis, Tennessee. Paul has also received the Appalachian Treasure Award from Kentucky Folk Arts Center and Kentucky Center for Traditional Music in Morehead, Ky. Paul was a renowned fiddler nationwide and had recently returned from a trip to Washington State where he taught his craft to others. Paul was also recognized as a Kentucky Colonel.
Funeral services will be Friday, August 26, 2011 at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home at 2 PM.
Visitation will be held Thursday, August 25, 2011 at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home from 6 PM till 9 PM. Pallbearers will be family and friends.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Charles Douglas "Chuck" May, 63, of Canada, KY, passed away Tuesday August 23, 2011 at the Appalachian Regional Hospital.
He was born March 25, 1948 the son of Delores Blackburn May of Pikeville, KY, and the late Charles Eugene May. He is also preceded in death by his son; James Harold May, grandparents; Ollie and Harvey May and T and Mary Blackburn and uncle; Doug Blackburn.
He was an ordained minister at the Canada Freewill Baptist Church, a retired coal miner, the Lead Diver for the Pike County Sheriff's Department Rescue Team and a volunteer Pike County Deputy Sheriff.
Besides his Mother, he is survived by his loving wife, Donna J. White May of Canada, Ky.; daughter, Lori May (Todd) Wheeler of Inez, Ky.; son, Jon May of Smyrna, TN.; sister, Debbi (Alan) Smith of Christiansburg, Va.; grandchildren, Jordan Ashton Wheeler, Victoria Noel Wheeler, Jenna May and Abby May and a host of loving family and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 26, 2011 at 11 AM in the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Jack Maynard officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy, KY, with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
Visitation will be held after 6 PM on Thursday, August 25, 2011 at the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with special services at 7 PM.
Allene Smith Stacy, 88, of Hardy, KY, passed away Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at her residence.
She was born November 22, 1922 at Dix Fork, Ky. the daughter of the late Carl and Fannie Charles Smith. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Stacy; sisters, Emogene Abshire, Ora Smith Lewis and Marie Smith and brothers, Luther Smith and Irvin Smith.
Allene was a homemaker, a member of Belfry Chapter #141 DAV and she served proudly as a Seaman First Class with the United States Navy in World War II as a WAVE.
Survivors include her daughters, Brenda Stacy (Joseph Darryl) Bogar Sr. of Barboursville, WV and Patricia (Pat) Stacy of Hardy, Ky.; son, David Michael (Shirley Baldwin) Stacy of Belfry, Ky.; brother, Lester D. (Hazel Dibble) Smith of Gahanna, Ohio; five grandchildren, six great grandchildren and a host of family and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 2, 2011 at 11 AM in the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Ed Lockard and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Ky. with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
Belfry Chapter #141 will conduct Military Graveside Services.

Ishmal Blackburn Jr., 85, of Pinsonfork, KY, passed away Friday September 2, 2011 at his residence.
He was born June 6, 1926 at Pinsonfork, Ky to the late Ishmal Blackburn Sr. and Isabella Ball Blackburn. He was also preceded in death by five sisters; Faustina Helvey, Georgia Ann O'Leary, Lillian Weddington, Minnie Edgar Hill and Mildred Mae Mullins, seven brothers; Lawson Blackburn, Charlie B. BLackburn, Otice Blackburn, Thomas Fred Blackburn, Jimmy Hayes Blackburn, Alex Blackburn and Toney Lee Blackburn.
He is survived by two brothers; Richard Blackburn of Pinsonfork, Ky and James H. Blackburn of Hatfield, Ky. and three sisters; Omadoll Allen of Charlotte, N.C., Polly Liza Whoberry of Illinois and Marilyn Coleman of Pinsonfork, Ky. and a host of family and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 AM Monday September 5, 2011 at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home with Buddy Kendrick and Gerria Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow at Blackburn Cemetery, Pinsonfork, Ky. with family and friends serving as pallbearers.

Dexter S. Horn, 78, of McVeigh, Kentucky, formerly of Prestonsburg, Kentucky passed away Thursday, September 1, 2011 in the Appalachian Regional Hospital, in South Williamson, Kentucky.
Born April 2, 1933 at Prestonburg, Kentucky, he was a son of the late Donald and Dorothy (Shepherd) Horn. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 33 years, Emma Lou Hunt Horn who died in 1988; two sons, Phillip Anthony Horn and Jeffery Alan Horn; and Great Grandson, Cameron Keith Crum.
Dexter was a Surface Mine Grates Operator for Addington Mining Company, a member of the McAndrews Church of Christ and a member of the Zebulon Lodge #273 F&AM.
He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Kennedy Staton Horn; one son, Randall David Horn of Stanville, Kentucky; three daughters, Sherry Horn (Larry) Crum of Martin, Kentucky, Sandra Renee Horn Hammond of Martin, Kentucky and Angela S. (Terry) May of McVeigh, Kentucky; special Niece, Lisa Ann Smith of McVeigh, Kentucky; seven grandchildren, Kevin Vincent (Tonya) Crum, Keith David Crum, Scott Alan Horn, Ashley (Ronnie) Harris, Sara Nicole Horn, Michael Blake Horn and Staton Michael Miles May; seven great grandchildren, Kyla Cox, Kolten David Crum, Nathaniel Southerland Crum, Michael Blake Brown, Chloe Harris, Seth Harris and Lucas Harris and a host of loving friends.

Deborah "Debbie" Lynn Hickman Duncan, 50 of Naugatuck, WV passed away Saturday, September 3, 2011 at Williamson Memorial Hospital.
She was born December 29, 1960 in Detroit, MI to Mary Kathryn Hickman of Turkey Creek, KY and the late James Edward Hickman. She was preceded in death by her son; Brian Duncan, brother; Phillip Hickman, grandparents; Cleo Hammond and Alex Vagott and James and Hazel Hickman, step father; Dave Burgess.
She was a homemaker and was very active in the community. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and daughter.
She is survived by her husband; Willis Duncan, sons; Moses (Brandy Locke) Ailiff of Warfield, KY and Jonathan (Amanda) Duncan of Matewan, WV, daughter; Melinda (Brian) Blankenship of Inez, KY, sisters; Alice Hickman (Rick) Elia of Williamson, WV and Regina Hickman (Keith) Looney of Slater's Branch, KY brother; John Hickman of Tenn, grandchildren; Ashley Blankenship, Aurora Ailiff, Owen Ailiff, Alex Ailiff, Katelyn Blankenship, Bryer Ailiff, Landon Ailiff, Braydon Blankenship, Lila Duncan and Kamryn Duncan and a host of loving family and friends.

Mary Began Stafford, 88, of Ransom, KY, passed away September 4, 2011 at Good Shepherd Community Nursing Home.
She was born December 24, 1922 in Ypsilanti, MI to the late Anthony "Tony" and Theresa Began. She was also preceded in death by her husband; Ray M. Stafford, brothers; Tony Began and John Began and her beloved sister; Margaret (Charles) Hatfield.
She was a homemaker, a Catholic and was employed by G. C. Murphy Co. for 30 years.
Mary is survived by her nieces and nephews, Greg Hatfield, Theresa Cassell, Debbie Abshire, Sharon Grimmett, Anetta Swafford, Nancy Kline and Chuck Hatfield and a host of great nieces and nephews, also great-great nieces and nephews who loving refer to her as simply Nanny.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 AM Thursday September 8, 2011 at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home with Conrad Hatfield officiating. Burial will follow at Alley Cemetery with Danny Cassell, Arthur Kline, Eric Whitt, Jason Whitt, Chayce Swafford and Hayden Hatfield serving as pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 6 till 9 PM Tuesday and Wednesday night at the funeral home with special services at 7 PM Wednesday night with Ron Acord officiating.
