Pauline B. Carter
Pauline B. Carter, of Tavares, FL, passed away on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at the age of 90 years.
She was born in Ball Fork, Ky. and moved to this area in 1984 from Kentucky.
Pauline was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Tavares. She was a published poet. She loved to write poetry and enjoyed sewing and quilting.
Pauline is survived by her husband of 71 years, William; sons, Rev. Mike Carter and his wife, Judy of Coleman, Fl., Gregg Carter and his wife, Ann of Santa Fe, New Mexico and Mark Carter and his wife, Debra of Turkey Creek, Ky.; daughters, Patricia Coleman of Tavares and Novella Lowe of Howey-in-the-Hills, Fl.; brothers, Hethel Birchfield and his wife, Alice of Knoxville, Tn., Arville Birchfield and his wife, Betty of Lake Panasoffkee, Fl and Everett Birchfield of Williamson, WV; as well as 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Friends are invited to gather for viewing on Thursday, January 5, 2011 from 11 AM till 1 PM at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry. Burial will follow at 1 PM at Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy, KY, with the Turkey Creek Freewill Baptist Church in charge.
Alvin Leonard, 86, of Williamson, West Virginia, passed away Friday, December 30, 2011 in the Pikeville Medical Center, Pikeville, Kentucky.
Born April 3, 1925 at Williamson, West Virginia, Alvin was the son of the late Oscar and Emma Wilson Leonard. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Covelle Phipps.
Alvin served his country with the United States Navy. He was a counselor with Columbus Area Mental Health, Columbus, Ohio and also Cleveland, Ohio. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.
Alvin is survived by his wife, Willa Ann (Dabney) Leonard of Charleston, West Virginia; two daughters, Felicia Yarbough of Atlanta, Georgia and Alisa Leonard of Charleston, West Virginia; three sons, Alvin Leonard Jr. of Suitland, Maryland, Durwin (Lena) Leonard of Charleston, West Virginia and Keith (Pat) Turner of Columbus, Ohio; Fifteen Grandchildren; fourteen Great Grandchildren; special friends, Burnett and Gay Dotson of Williamson, West Virginia and a host of loving friends.
Funeral Services will be held 1 P.M. Monday at the Logan Street First Baptist Church, Williamson, West Virginia with Rev.Gerald Dotson and Elder Rick Wilkerson officiating.
Burial will follow in the Mt. View Memory Gardens, Maher, West Virginia with Timothy Hatcher, Dennis Paige, James Obey, William Blackmon, Gary Baker and Parnell Dotson Jr. serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Burnett Dotson, Terry Warren, Norman Phillips, Sam Slayton and Karl Luke. Belfry Chapter #141 D.A.V. will provide Graveside Military Honors.
The body will lay in state one hour prior the funeral at the church.
Ina Chafins
Ina Stanley Chafins, 74, of Mouthcard, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2011, at her home.
She was born in Wise County, Va., May 18, 1936.
She was a member of the Patterson Free Pentecostal Church of God and a minister of God’s word and song for many years.
She was preceded in death by three children, David Wayne Chafins, Dallas Chafins, Jr. and Rebecca Lynn Gibson; and two brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by her husband, Dallas Chafins; five sons, Jerry Chafins of Palmetto, Fla., Robert Chafins of Dingus, W.Va., Timmy Chafins of Raven, Va., Billy Joe Chafins of Whitewood, Va., Dwight Chafins of Paintsville; four daughters, Judy McClanahan of Harman, Va., Pamela Gross of Whitewood, Sandy Jewell of Mt. Sterling, Tammie Franks of Lexington; one sister, Shirley Grizzle; 28 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 4, in the Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va. Arrangements are under direction of Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home of Grundy, Va.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday with evening services at 7.

Phyllis A. Hill Marcum, 68, of Huntington, W.Va., died Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington.
A memorial service was held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Leon Garner and Rev. Darrell Buttram officiating.
A graveside tribute will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 3, in the Marcum Cemetery, Pie, W.Va.

Evelyn Marie Richardson, 81, died Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at Signature Health Care Center, Pikeville.
She was born in Hellier, Dec. 18, 1929, the daughter of the late Ulan and Pearl Brooks Casebolt.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Richardson; two brothers, Louis Casebolt and Crawford Casebolt; and two sisters, Inis Workman and Fayetta Thacker.
She is survived by one son, Johnny Richardson (Wanda Branham) of Fords Branch; two daughters, Jacqueline Mattingly (Joseph) of Radcliff and Georgette Yates of Shelbiana; two stepdaughters, Billie Combs (Billy Ray) of Taylor, Mich., and Patricia Owens (Don) of Ohio; one brother, Samuel Casebolt of Robinson Creek; seven sisters, Delphia Cruz of Lorain, Ohio, Ester Lee Newsome, Lillian Ann Hampton and Francis Hampton, all of Robinson Creek, Lennie Mattingly of Georgia, Spicie Bartley of Pikeville, Rosalene Hall of Ohio; nine grandchildren, Donna Hawkins, Randall Hawkins, Stacy Fugate, Johnny Ray Richardson, Whitney Richardson, Trina Romans, Jacqueline Kinney, Herman Yates Jr. and James Yates; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 5, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Greasy Creek Freewill Baptist and Church of Christ ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Alvis Newsome Cemetery, Little Robinson Creek. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Thursday, with special services at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday.
Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.
Ruth Wellman
Ruth Ann Wellman, 75, of Unicoi, Tenn., formerly of West Williamson, W.Va., died Tuesday, March 1, 2011.
She was born in Cinderella, W.Va., Sept. 29, 1935, the daughter of the late Theodore Roosevelt and Okie Marie Smith Lowe.
She was a homemaker, a member of the West Williamson Freewill Baptist Church and attended New Hope Freewill Baptist Church in Tennessee.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. John C. “Bill” Wellman; and one sister Peggy Goble.
She is survived by one son, John Mark Wellman of Goody; three daughters, Donna Hatfield of Lenore, W.Va., Shelia Phillips of Gray, Tenn., Angela Johnson of Unicoi; one brother, Haskell Lowe of Norfolk, Va.; seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at noon Friday, March 4, in the West Williamson Freewill Baptist Church with Eddie Hatfield and Earsel Ray Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, West Williamson. Arrangements are under direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Thursday at Freedom United Baptist Church, Lenore, with special services at 7 p.m.
Kelly Adams
Kelly Bee Adams, 65, of Speight, died Sunday, May 1, 2011, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in Pike County, July 31, 1945, the son of the late Calvin Adams and Cathy Elswick Adams.
He was a disabled coal miner and a member of the Speight Church of Christ.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nora Rita Adams.
He is survived by his true companion, Mabel Tackett of Caney Highway; two sons, Phillip Adams (April) and Keith Adams (Katrena), both of Long Fork, Virgie; one daughter, Phyllis Johnson (Ken) of Long Fork, Virgie; and nine grandchildren, Jarrod Newsome, Cody Johnson, Timothy, Katelyn Allyssa Shae and Pacy Braden Adams, Tierstyn, Logan Todd and Sarah Thacker.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, in the Speight Church of Christ with Bradley Taylor and Darrell Strange officiating. Burial will follow in the Sebastian Johnson Cemetery, Long Fork, Virgie. Arrangements are under direction of Roberts Funeral Home of Robinson Creek.

Tommy Blackburn Jr.
Tommy Blackburn Jr., 74, of Turkey Creek, died Thursday, April 28, 2011, at the South Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital.
He was born in Martin County, April 24, 1936, the son of the late Tommy Blackburn Sr. and Judy Howard Blackburn.
He was a coal miner for Osborne Mining and a member of the Turkey Creek Freewill Baptist Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Arnold Blackburn.
He is survived by his wife, Joanne Preece Blackburn; two brothers, Lawyer Blackburn of Adamsville, Fla., and Willie Blackburn of Turkey Creek; and one sister, Ora Blackburn of Turkey Creek.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 1, in the Turkey Creek Freewill Baptist Church with Jimmy Stanley, Mikey Smith and Gary Blackburn officiating. Burial followed in the family cemetery, Turkey Creek. Arrangements were under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Veronica Epling
Veronica Carol Johnson Epling, 52, died Sunday, May 1, 2011, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Elkhorn City, Jan. 7, 1959, the daughter of Earl Gene Johnson and Carol Johnson.
She was an appraiser for Epling Appraisal and a member of the Marrowbone Missionary Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by one son, Jonathan Ryan Epling.
Besides her parents, she is survived by her husband, John Paul Epling; and one son, Christopher Earl Epling of Lexington.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 4, in the Marrowbone Missionary Baptist Church with Bro. Roger Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, Chloe Road. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is at the church with special services at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Mary Mahon
Mary Hardin Mahon, 85, of Thacker, W.Va., died Friday, April 29, 2011, at the South Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday, May 4, in the Chambers Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Opie Ray Harris officiating. Burial will follow in the Harris Cemetery, Thacker. Arrangements are under direction of Chambers Funeral Services of Matewan, W.Va.
Visitation is in the chapel from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Teresa Messer
Teresa Dawn Messer, 36, of Naugatuck, W.Va., died Tuesday, April 26, 2011, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington, W.Va.
She was born in Huntington, April 22, 1975, the daughter of Joyce Rose (Messer) of Naugatuck and Harold Messer of Dingess, W.Va.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandparents, Ruth and Elmer Rose and Arvil Farley.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by one sister, Michele Rahe of Naugatuck; her grandmother, Jean Farley of Delbarton, W.Va.; and two nephews, Adam and Austin Rahe.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 30, in the Duncan Fork House of Prayer with Pastor Roger Ooten officiating. Burial followed in the Newsome Ridge Cemetery, Naugatuck. Arrangements were under direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.
Jobie Miller
Jobie Miller, 46, of Sugar Camp Road, Robinson Creek, died Monday, April 25, 2011, at Sugar Camp Branch.
He was born in Pike County, Nov. 19, 1964, the son of Enolie Miller of Sugar Camp Branch and the late Bradley Lee Miller Sr.
He was a disabled truck driver.
Besides his mother, he is survived by three sons, Jobie Reed Miller, Codie Matthew Miller, Austin Wade Miller; two daughters, Lana Faye Miller and Jodie Beth Miller; eight brothers, Marvin Miller (Ruby) of Elkhorn City, Speed Miller, Bradley Jr. Miller, Tom Miller (Judy), Bill Miller (Carolyn) and Sonny Miller, all of Sugar Camp, Bobby Miller (Debbie) of Caney Highway, Ned Miller (Roberta) of Millard; and three sisters, Peggy Ester Brown (Gary) of Bean Station, Tenn., Tincey Price of Winston Salem, N.C., and Dandy Mae Thacker (Curtis) of Raccoon.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 30, in the Roberts Funeral Home Chapel with P. Vernon Damron, Ben Little, Kermit Wright and others officiating.
