Thomas Sellards
Thomas Ricky Sellards, 48, of Pinsonfork, died Saturday, April 30, 2011, at his home.
He was born in Huntington, W.Va., Aug. 15, 1962, the son of Ras Raymond and Eleanor Sue Runyon Sellards of Columbia Station, Ohio.
He was a former employee of the Laborers Union, removing asbestos.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Annette Spielburger.
Besides his parents, he is survived by one daughter, Ashley Cross of Paintsville; two brothers, Ronald Sellards of Pinsonfork and Raymond Sellards of Columbia Station; one sister, Nell Cornell of Columbia Station; and two grandchildren, Gianna and Ashten Cross.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 3, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Shane Ward and Shawn Ward officiating. Burial will follow in the Runyon Cemetery, Pinsonfork. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Randy Sergent
Randy Nathaniel “Bub” Sergent, 24, of Virgie, died Friday, April 29, 2011, at Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, Tenn.
He was born in Norton, Va., May 14, 1986, the son of the late Randall Sergent and Shelby Jean Meade Sergent.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Danny Meade.
He is survived by his maternal grandmother, Imogene Johnson Meade of Virgie; his paternal grandparents, Arthur and Joyce Sergent of Deane; one brother, Matthew Blake Sergent of Virgie; his aunt, Brenda Spangler of Indianapolis, Ind.; and his aunt and uncle, Dianna and Dwight Holbrook of Kona.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, in the Speight Church of Christ with Brad Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in the Tom Johnson Family Cemetery, Speight Road, Long Fork of Virgie. Arrangements are under direction of J.W. Call and Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
James Smith
James W. Smith, 83, of McVeigh, died Thursday, April 28, 2011, at the Appalachian Regional Hospital.
He was born in Martin County, May 30, 1927, the son of the late James and Sadie Dalton Smith.
He was a retired coal miner from Eastern Coal, a member of United Mine Workers of America, a veteran, serving four years in the U.S. Army and eight years in the U.S. Navy, and a member of the McAndrews Church of Christ.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Michael W. Smith; and five brothers, Clyde Smith, Deming Smith, Okey Smith, Arnold Smith and Prent Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Ethel Kennedy Smith; one daughter, Lisa Smith of McVeigh; one brother, Don Smith of Thornville, Ohio; five sisters, Florence Cains of Lancaster, Ohio, Geneva Faulkner of Graveport, Ohio, Nell Howell and Sue Jude, both of Beauty, and Connie Adams of Blacklick, Ohio; and two stepbrothers, Garland Muncy of Beauty and Ance Muncy Jr. of Zanesville, Ohio.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 1, in the McAndrews Church of Christ, with Joe Cochran officiating. Burial followed in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy. Arrangements were under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Myrtle Bartley
Myrtle R. Bartley, 101, died Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011, at Mountain View Healthcare Center, Elkhorn City.
She was born in Pike County, Dec. 18, 1909, the daughter of the late Basil J. Ramey and Rosa Ratliff Ramey.
She was a school teacher and merchant, and a member of the Little Hattie Old Regular Baptist Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Estil Bartley; two sons, Hollis Bartley and Lloyd Bartley; three brothers, Roland Bartley, Julis Bartley and Woodrow Bartley; and two sisters, Joann Hendrickson and Chola Bartley.
She is survived by two sons, Goebel Bartley of Livonia, Mich., and Michael Bartley of Rockhouse; one brother, Jack Ramey of Ashcamp; one sister, Hazel Epling of Elkhorn City; 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday, Sept. 1, in the Samaria Old Regular Baptist Church with Jimmy Dale Sanders, James Tackett, Virgil Ratliff, Curt Carroll and Jerry Overstreet officiating. Burial will follow in the Bartley Family Cemetery, Rockhouse. Arrangements are under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Visitation is at the funeral home Wednesday with special services at 7 p.m. Visitation is at the church Thursday beginning at 10 a.m.
Dora Bentley
Dora Bentley, 77, of Yonts Fork of Jackhorn, died Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, at her home.
She was born in Pike County, July 26, 1934, the daughter of the late John and Roxie Bentley Stewart.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Can Dewey Bentley; two sons, Richard Vincent Bentley and John Vance Bentley; one daughter, Edna Bentley; one brother, Alemander Stewart; and two sisters, Ollie Mae Stewart and Allie Holloway.
She is survived by four sons, George Bentley of Jackhorn, Danny Bentley of Kona, Benny Bentley of Sandlick, Russell Bentley of Millstone; three daughters, Linda Bentley and Roxie Bentley, both of Jackhorn, Jackie Bentley of McRoberts; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, in the Speight Church of Christ with Brad Taylor and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Bentley Family Cemetery, Jackhorn. Arrangements are under direction of Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Phyllis Blackburn
Phyllis Blackburn, 77, of Williamson, W.Va., died Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011, at the South Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital.
She was born in Meador, W.Va., March 1, 1934, the daughter of late Perry and Bid Steele Blackburn.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James “Buddy” Blackburn; one son, James R. Blackburn; one daughter, Rhonda King; one brother, Tommy Roger Steele; and two granddaughters.
She is survived by one son, William Blackburn of Sidney; one daughter, Teresa Dean of Williamson; one brother, Alfred Lee Steele of Roanoke, Va.; eight grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at noon Sunday, Aug. 28, in the Hatfield Funeral Chapel with Eugene Preece and Frank “Baldy” Marcum officiating. Burial followed in the Ellison Hatfield Cemetery, Newtown, W.Va. Arrangements were under direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.
Betty Sue Carroll
Betty Sue Blackburn Carroll, 67, died Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011, at her home.
She was born Sept. 19, 1943, the daughter of the late Frank and Mavis Blackburn Carroll.
She was a homemaker and of the Freewill Baptist faith.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Carroll; and one daughter, Lorraine Carroll.
She is survived by one son, Eldon Carroll, four daughters, Shana Carroll, Debbie Morrow, Rhonda Mosley and Melissa MacDonald; four brothers, Eugene Blackburn, Eldon Blackburn, Roger Blackburn, David Blackburn; one sister, Wanda Thacker; 20 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 29, in the Greasy Creek Freewill Baptist Church with Jimmy Jack Adkins and Jimmy Reed Adkins officiating. Burial followed in the Robinson Cemetery, Greasy Creek. Arrangements were under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Allen Cline Jr.
Allen David Cline Jr., 78, of Kilgore, died Friday, Aug. 26, 2011, at King’s Daughters Medical Center following a brief illness.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Allen David Cline and Marie Dillon Cline Hall; his stepfather, Mark Anthony Hall of Pikeville; and one sister, Martha Cline Fields.
Allen attended Pikeville College Academy, graduated from Pikeville College and was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy in 1952. He served active duty in the U.S. Navy and Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1958.
He earned a B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Kentucky and was inducted into Tau Beta Pi and Etta Kappa Nu, national engineering honor societies.
He joined Kentucky Power in 1961 and retired in 1995 after 34 years of service. He was instrumental in the founding of The Vegetation Management Association of Kentucky, inducted into Scovell Society, named distinguished graduate by the College of Agriculture, appointed Honorary Commissioner of Agriculture for the state of Kentucky. Allen was also appointed a Kentucky Colonel by Governor Martha Lane Collins in 1987 and was a member of the UK Fellows Society.
Allen was an active outdoorsman enjoying fishing and hunting and was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. His favorite sports included tennis and basketball. Allen served as Scoutmaster for Boy Scouts of America and was a deacon in the Episcopal Church. Since 1996 he and Pat have sponsored three children from Honduras through ChildFund International.
Allen was very active in local amateur theater and was a founding member of the Performing Arts Guild in Ashland. Later, he became involved with Ashland Community College’s drama department. His favorite and best-known role was Tevye in “Fiddler on the Roof.” Other roles included Jacob Marley in “A Christmas Carol,” John Proctor in “The Crucible,” King Henry in “A Lion in Winter” and many others too numerous to mention.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Patricia Rawlings Cline; two sons, Allen David Cline III (Janine) of Lexington and Roger M. Cline (Thea) of Kilgore; and three grandchildren, Caleb N. Cline, USMC Cherry Point, N.C., Leslie C. Cline, of Huntington, W.Va., and Maria L. Cline of Kilgore.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, in the Steen Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Sally Schlisler, rector of Christ Episcopal Church, Ironton, Ohio, officiating. Burial will follow in Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel. Arrangements are under direction of Steen Funeral Home Chapel of Ashland.
Visitation will be at the funeral home from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Memorials may be made to Boy Scouts of America or Christ Episcopal Church, Ironton, Ohio.
Jack Coleman
Jack Coleman, 82, of Mouthcard, died Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in Pike County, Oct. 31, 1928, the son of the late Cecil Coleman and Alta Cantrell Coleman.
He was a coal miner.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Denton Coleman.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Phyllis Jean Sturgell Coleman; one son, Ricky Coleman (Barbara) of Feds Creek; two daughters, Sandy Stalker (Mike) of Mouthcard and Jean Ann Anderson (Terry) of Elkhorn City; two brothers, Roger Dean Coleman (Maye) of Mouthcard and Billy Joe Coleman (Faye) of San Mateo, Fla.; two grandchildren, Keith Stalker (Rogetta) of Somerset and Sabrina Gayle Coleman of Feds Creek; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Frank Crum officiating. Burial followed in the Flanary Cemetery, Mouthcard. Arrangements were under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
George Ferguson
George Thaddeus Ferguson, 58, of Seffner, Fla., formerly of Matewan, W.Va., died Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011, at Las Palmas Medical Center, El Paso, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, in the Chambers Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Danny Mikles officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy. Arrangements are under direction of Chambers Funeral Home of Matewan.
Visitation is from noon to 12:30 p.m.

Wonnie Hampton
Wonnie Lee Maggard Hampton, 81, died Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, at her home.
She was the daughter of the late Jimmy and Vera Sturgill Maggard.
She was a homemaker and of the Christian faith.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Hampton; two sons, Roy Maggard and Jimmy Ray Maggard; two brothers, Burley Maggard and Esser Boggs; and two sisters, Opal Sturgill and Cora Parsons.
She is survived by four sons, Billy Wayne Hampton and Roger Dale Maggard, both of Eolia, Charles Lee Hampton of Big Stone Gap and Louis Tate Hampton of Jenkins; two daughters, Rose Marie Church of Pound, Va., and Diane Gross of Evarts; one sister Belle Payne of Cumberland; 16 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29, in the Adams Cemetery, Robert Branch of Eolia. Arrangements were under direction of Baker Funeral Home of Pound.
