Shirley Magers
Shirley Ann “Pearl” Magers, 77, of Robinson Creek, formerly of Dallas, W.Va., died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Dallas, Aug. 9, 1934, the daughter of the late Roy E. Kimmins and Wilda Tilton Kimmins.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Dallas Presbyterian Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Bob” Magers.
She is survived by three daughters, Cindy (Mrs. Brian) Thomas, Barb (Mrs. Brian) Roberts and Donna (Mrs. Jim) Simmons, all of Robinson Creek; two brothers, Lloyd E. Kimmins (Mary Kay) of Valley Grove, W.Va., and Calvin E. Kimmins (Betty) of Dallas; one sister-in-law, Rose Mary Kimmins (Richard) of Elm Grove, W.Va.; and four grandchildren, Robert Shawn Little (Deborah Hunt), Brianna Nicole Roberts, Hailee Brooke Simmons and Ashley Jo Thomas.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, in the Kepner Funeral Home Chapel with Cindy Murphy officiating. Burial will follow in Mount View Cemetery, Dallas. Arrangements are under direction of Roberts Funeral Home of Robinson Creek.
Visitation is from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Kepner Funeral Home Chapel, Dallas.
Emmett Murphy Jr.
Emmett Q. Murphy Jr., 44, of Ransom, died Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011, at his home.
A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, Sept. 24, in the Chambers Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Carl Butler officiating. Arrangements are under direction of Chambers Funeral Services Inc. of Matewan, W.Va.
Wilson Pinson
Wilson Eugene Pinson, 66, of Canada, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 14, 1945, the son of the late Alton and Opal Holland Pinson.
He was a retired coal miner with Thacker Energy, a member of Thomas C. Cecil Masonic Lodge #375 F&AM, a U.S. Army veteran having served in Vietnam, and a member of Belfry Chapter #141 D.A.V.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, John Oliver Pinson, James Pinson and Charles Edward Pinson; and one sister, Minnie Lucille Smith.
He is survived by one son, Wayne Eugene Pinson of Canada; two daughters, Penny Lynn Young of Pikeville and Cheryl Denise Carter of Portsmouth, Ohio; three brothers, Billy Harold Pinson of Hatfield, Donnie Junior Pinson of Canada and Lonnie Dale Pinson of Mt. Sterling; two sisters, Lois Kaye Stanley of Ohio and Sharon Faye Pinson of Kermit, W.Va.; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Gary Thacker officiating. Entombment followed in the Mountain View Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Huddy. Arrangements were under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Kanda Slone
Kanda Melise Holsinger Slone, 36, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Virgie, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, in Columbus.
She was born in Atlanta, Dec. 31, 1974, the daughter of Kathryn Smith Hirschinger of Ohio and the late Jimmy Dale Holsinger.
Besides her father, she was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, John Smith Jr. and Bonnie Smith; and her paternal grandparents, Edward and Maxie Martin Holsinger.
Besides her mother, she is survived by her stepfather, Harry Hirschinger; one son, John Michael Slone of Kimper; one brother, James Edward Holsinger of West Jefferson, Ohio; two stepbrother, Steven Hirschinger of Rockville, Md., and David Hirschinger of Jerusalem; and one stepsister, Pamela Bell of Jerusalem.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, in the Hall & Jones Funeral Home Chapel with S.J. Bates, Charles Justice and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Martin Cemetery, Indian Creek. Arrangements are under direction of Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Ruby Hamilton
Ruby Gean Hamilton, 69, of Craynor, died Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
She was born Oct. 12, 1941, the daughter of the late Chester E. and Stella Howell Newsome.
She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by one son, Wade Brian Hamilton and one brother, Joseph Newsome.
She is survived by two sons, Wallace Hamilton of McDowell and Kelly Hamilton of Craynor; three daughters, Anita Tackett of Teaberry, Rita Faye Hamilton and Freda Hamilton, both of Craynor; four brothers, four sisters, seven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011, at 10 a.m. at Samaria Old Regular Baptist Church, Teaberry.
Old Regular Baptist Ministers will officiate over the service.
Visitation will begin after 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, 2011, at the church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson Frazier Funeral Home.
Denvard Meade
Denvard Meade, 61, of Morehead, died Oct. 6, 2011, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center.
He was born December 17, 1949, the son of Philman Caudill of McDowell and the late Miranda Meade Caudill.
He was a disabled coal miner.
He was preceded in death by one son, David Lee Meade; two brothers, Mose Meade and Chillas Meade and one sister, Wanda Gayheart.
He is survived by two daughters, Lindsay Marie Herrington of McDowell and Kelly Jo Meade Cathers of McDowell; five sons, four brothers, four sisters, 21 grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
Bobby Belcher
Bobby W. “Bugs” Belcher, 73, of Belcher, died Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in Pikeville, Nov. 26, 1937, the son of the late Ed Belcher and Nora Belcher.
He was retired from Wayne Long Truck Company and was a member of Unity Freewill Baptist Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Connie Sue Smith Belcher; two brothers, Franklin Belcher and Paul Belcher; and one sister, Mary Thacker.
He is survived by one son, Bobby R. Belcher; two daughters, Tammy DeLong and Sherry Meadows; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, in the Unity Freewill Baptist Church with Daryl Harmon, Mike Coleman and Delon Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the Coleman Family Cemetery, Wolfpit. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Wednesday, with special services at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
Landon Blackburn Jr.
Landon Blackburn Jr., 39, of Oliver Springs, Tenn., died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at his home.
He was born in Pikeville, Feb. 2, 1972, the son of Gayrene Goff and the late Landon Blackburn Sr.
He was disabled and of the Freewill Baptist faith.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his stepfather, Danny Goff; three daughters, Sierra LaShae Blackburn and Makayla Renae Blackburn, both of Shelbiana, and Kelsey Renae Blackburn of Oliver Springs; and three sisters, Freda Holbrook, Dannie Worrix and Trista Elswick, all of Pikeville.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Morgan Chapman officiating. Burial will follow in the Reynolds Cemetery, Little Robinson Creek. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Halligene Cansler
Halligene Whisman Cansler, 81, of Pikeville, died Monday, Sept. 19, 2011, at Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg.
She was born in Pike County, Sept. 4, 1930, the daughter of the late Hiram Whisman and Arzetta Steffey Whisman.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Coal Run Church of Christ.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jean Cansler; four sons, Clay Charles, Ronnie James Mullins, William Bo Charles and Paris Jr. Charles; one brother, Jack Whisman; two sisters, Shelby Posey and Kate Noel; and granddaughter, Janie Elizabeth Charles.
She is survived by two sons, Paris Randall Charles of Richmond and Johnny Mack Mullins (Delane) of Pikeville; three daughters, Patsy Lycans of Pikeville, Parthenia Charles Leal (Roman) of Port Charlotte, Fla., Pamala Hunt of Lexington; three sisters, Betty Zane Mullins of Pikeville and Colleen Vanover and Sonja Runyon, both of Ypsilanti, Mich.; 22 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and one expected soon great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 23, in the J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Jerry Bliffen officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, Chloe Road. Arrangements are under direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Thursday with services at 7 p.m.

Shawn Crum
Shawn Kennedy Crum, 42, of Martin, died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2011, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in McDowell, Aug. 20, 1969, the son of Anna Marie Crum.
He was a coal truck driver and a member of the Arkansas Creek Community Church of God.
Besides his mother, he is survived by one daughter, Shawnah LaShae Patrick.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, in the Nelson Frazier Funeral Home Chapel with Bud Crum, Larry Castle and Ernest Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow in the Arvil Crum Memorial Cemetery, Martin. Arrangements are under direction of Nelson Frazier Funeral Home of Martin.
Ruth De Schepper
Ruth Genevieve De Schepper, 93, of Westport, Conn., wife of the late John De Schepper, passed away Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at Norwalk Hospital, Norwalk Conn., in the company of her son, John DeSchepper II.
Mrs. De Schepper was born in Pikeville, Jan. 20, 1918, the daughter of Frank Slone and Minnie Matney.
She graduated from Pikeville College in 1937. During World War II, she worked for the New York Central Railroad. She married
John De Schepper after he was discharged from service as 2nd lieutenant and they immediately left for Belgium where he worked as vice president international for Johns-Manville Corp. For the next 18 years she raised two children as a homemaker, returning to the U.S. in 1962 to reside in Westport.
She embarked on a second career as executive secretary at Pitney Bowes in Norwalk, Conn., and then in the same position at General Electric Credit in Stamford, Conn., until the late 1970s, thereupon resuming her duties as a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, John De Schepper II of Spring Hill, Fla.; and one daughter, Gladys Celestine De Schepper, her husband, Dennis Harold Wood of Toronto, Canada.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, in the J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel with Jeremy Tackett officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, Chloe Road. Arrangements are under direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and 10 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, in the funeral home chapel.
