Earl Blackburn
Earl Dean Blackburn, 74, of Prestonsburg, died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in Endicott, July 7, 1937, the son of the late Otto and Dora Martin Blackburn.
He was a retired logger and a member of the Zebulon Baptist Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, David Ollie Blackburn; and one sister, Emily Sellards.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Lou Blackburn; two sons, Earl Thomas Blackburn and Randall Dean Blackburn, both of Prestonsburg; three daughters, Ruby Ann Tackett of Harold and Velinda Gaye Goble and Anita Renee Blackburn, both of Prestonsburg; one brother, John K. Blackburn; two sisters, Betty Goble of Prestonsburg and Patty Gail Manuel of Warsaw, Ind.; nine grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, in the Nelson Frazier Funeral Home Chapel with Tom Harding and Bobby Joe Spencer officiating. Burial followed in the Blackburn Family Cemetery. Arrangements were under direction of Nelson Frazier Funeral Home of Martin
James Davis Jr.
James “Bud” Davis Jr., 77, of Varney, W.Va., died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011, at Williamson Memorial Hospital, Williamson, W.Va.
Funeral services were held at noon Tuesday, Sept. 27, in the Mount Lebanon Baptist Church, Red Jacket, W.Va., with the Rev. David Bell, Minister Ronald Reynolds and Elder Thomas More officiating. Burial followed in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Maher, W.Va. Arrangements were under direction of Chambers Funeral Home of Matewan, W.Va.
Russell Dotson
Russell Patrick Dotson, 37, of Printer, died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, at his home.
He was born in Freeburn, July 4, 1974, the son of the late Eddie Dotson and Mildred Dotson Wolford.
He was a coal miner and of the Protestant faith.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Brenda Widner Dotson.
He is survived by one son, Jamie Hatfield; one brother, Robbie Dotson; four sisters, Glenna Lell, Linna McCray, Katherine Justice and Allison Klug; and one grandchild.
Funeral services were held at noon Tuesday, Sept. 27, in the Phelps Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Harold Layne officiating. Burial followed in the Dotson Family Cemetery, Phelps. Arrangements were under direction of Phelps Funeral Services Inc.
Matlene Hall
Matlene B. Hall, 80, of Robinson Creek Road, Virgie, died Monday, Sept. 26, 2011, at her home.
She was born in Esco, June 22, 1931, the daughter of the late Orville Bartley and Mahaley Bartley.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Varnel Bartley and Charlie Bartley; and one sister, Christlene Ratliff.
She is survived by her husband, Billy James Hall; one son, Ronnie Hall of Robinson Creek; one daughter, Garnet Ann Maher of Tucson, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Jessica Hall and Jami Hall; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, in the Roberts Funeral Home Chapel with Terry Damron, Dewey Roberts, Terry Honaker, Floyd Compton and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Amos Newsome Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Roberts Funeral Home of Robinson Creek.
Shirley Jervis
Shirley Dean Jervis, 64, of Prestonsburg, died Friday, Sept. 23, 2011, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
She was born in Endicott, Dec. 28, 1946, the daughter of the late Jack and Josephine Hatfield Jervis.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Jervis; one daughter, Patricia Ann Jarrell; and two brothers, Jeffery Jervis and Jack Jervis Jr.
She is survived by one son, John David Jervis of Endicott; three daughters, Versinda Jervis, Melinda Jervis and Sherrie Dawn Hall, all of Endicott; three brothers, Freddie Jervis of Ashville, Ohio, Stanley Jervis of Endicott, Johnny Jervis of Johns Creek; five sisters, Mary Ann Burchett, Roseatta Ward and Roberta Burchett, all of Endicott, Lou Jane Hunter of Mansfield, Ohio, Maggie Damron of Tram; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 26, in the Nelson Frazier Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Jervis Cemetery, Endicott. Arrangements were under direction of Nelson Frazier Funeral Home of Martin.
Shannon Rogers
Shannon Christopher Rogers, 32, died Friday, Sept. 23, 2011.
He was born in Roanoke, Va., Sept. 1, 1979, the son of Arthur Odell Rogers and Micca Campbell Calhoun.
He was employed by the Revelation Coal Company as a loader operator.
Besides his parents, he is survived by one son, Christopher Bryce Rogers of Martin; three brothers, Arthur Rogers II of Las Vegas, James Blair Rogers of Columbia, S.C., and Brian G. Frells of Asheville, N.C.; and his maternal grandmother, Nancy E. Campbell of Prestonsburg.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, in the Green Hills Cemetery, Claypool Hill, Va. Arrangements were under direction of Carter Funeral Home of Prestonsburg.
Myrtha Skinner
Myrtha Lowe Skinner, 94, of Ravenna, Ohio, formerly of Hatfield, died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, at the Maplewood Care Center, Streetsboro, Ohio.
She was born at Hatfield, July 12, 1917, the daughter of the late Tandy D. Lowe Sr. and Mary L. Caines Lowe.
She was a homemaker and a member of the North Peninsula Baptist Church, Ormond Beach, Fla.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Skinner; two brothers, Blake Lowe and Don Lowe Jr.; one sister, Blanche Nelson; and one grandson, Joseph Edward Lowe.
She is survived by one son, Joe Lowe of Ravenna; two sisters, Lois Trout of Chattaroy, W.Va., and Louise Sanford of Ocala, Fla.; two grandchildren, Karen Murphy and Debbie Anderson; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday, Sept. 29, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Eddie Hatfield officiating. Burial will follow in the Lowe Cemetery, Hatfield. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.

James Taylor
James “Landon” Taylor II of Ocala, Fla., formerly of Pike County, went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011.
He was born to Rush Bege and Carrie Jane McCoy Taylor, Feb. 29, 1920, in Thomas, Ky.
Landon cherished his family and friends. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, walking and the outdoors. Landon was a World War II Army veteran serving in the ETO 3rd Army 178th Combat Engineers, building Bailey Bridges crossing the Rhine River and placing wire to protect the infantrymen on the front lines in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe.

He dedicated his life to Jesus Christ and was baptized on the third Saturday in May, 1954. In October of 1957, he became a deacon at Big Branch serving as clerk at Turkey Creek and treasurer of the Sardis Association Old Regular Baptist Church.

After 26 years of service to Appalachian Regional Hospitals, Landon retired as a printing supervisor.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Lakie Taylor; daughters, Lanise Weidle (Charles) of Middletown, Ohio, and Loretta Leach (Doug) of Versailles; son, James Landon Taylor, III (Catherine) of Ocala; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, James Moses Taylor of Ironton, Ohio, and Lloyd Taylor of Ft. Worth, Texas.

Lucas Vernon Whitt, 30, of Ransom, died Friday, Sept. 23, 2011, at his home.
He was born in South Williamson, Oct. 26, 1980, the son of Claude Herman Whitt of Ransom and Connie Scott of Hardy.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Vernon and Sadie Whitt; and his maternal grandparents, Olen Thomas and Lou Wanna Pope.
He was a coal miner.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, Amy Justice Whitt; two children, Lucas Cooper Whitt and Emma Grace Whitt, both of the home; three brothers, Eric Whitt and Adam Whitt, both of Ransom, Cory Dell Scott of Hardy; three stepbrothers;, Bruce Scott and Brian Scott, both of Stone, Steve Scott of Hardy; and one step sister, Crystal Scott of Pinsonfork.

Juan Boyd, 70, of Dana, died Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2011, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine Mulkey Boyd.

Brenda Damron
Brenda Damron, 57, of Lower Johns Creek, died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011, at her home.
She was born in Martin, Sept. 18, 1954, the daughter of Omer Bentley and Henritta Lowe.
She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Angela Mangrum and Clarinda Damron; and one sister, Joyce Ann Bentley.
Besides her parents, she is survived by her husband, Ron Damron; one son, Rondle Bowens; five daughters, Kavinda Bowens, Sabrina Malvong, Nicole Damron, Rhonda Martinez and Cinda Posey; two brothers, Danny Bentley and Kenny Bentley; two sisters, Gabrielle Lowe and Rose Taylor; 17 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, in the Freedom Bible Church with Bill Smith, Dean Stanley, Terry Gibson and others officiating. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel and from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday in the Freedom Bible Church. Services will be held at 7 o’clock nightly.
Molly Goble
Molly Blair Goble, 81, of Grundy, Va., died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011, at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy.
She was born in Thacker, W.Va., the daughter of the late Daniel and Maggie Riddle Blair.
She was a former production worker at McGraw Edison Company and was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Goble, who died Jan. 2, 2006; one son, John B. Lybarger; and one sister, Betty Dimory.
She is survived by two sons, Don D. Goble of Lebanon, Va., and George H. Goble of Grundy; one brother, G.C. Blair of Tram; eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, in the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Britt Jackson and Jimmy Kerr officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va. Arrangements were under direction of Grundy Funeral Home.
