Maribeth Yates
Maribeth Yates, 23, of Grethel, died Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011, at her home.
She was born in Pikeville, Feb. 27, 1988, the daughter of Ray Yates and JoAnn Hall Tackett.
She was a homemaker.
Besides her parents, she is survived by her children, Christopher Ray Coleman and Brooklynn Mikiah Coleman, both of Grethel; one brother, Gary Ray Yates of McDowell; one sister, Neidra Dawn Potter of Grethel; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, in the Nelson Frazier Funeral Home Chapel with Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Hall Cemetery, Tackett Fork, Beaver. Arrangements are under direction of Nelson Frazier Funeral Home of Martin.
Gregory Blackburn
Gregory Paul Blackburn, 54, of Sevierville, TN (formerly of Myra, KY),died Monday, Oct. 3, 2011, at home in Sevierville, TN.
He was born in Pike County, Dec. 24, 1956, the son of the late Hutson and Rebecca Sue Blackburn.
He was a retired coal mine foreman.
He is preceded in death by one granddaughter, Lillie Nicole Blackburn.
He is survived by hiis wife, Jennifer Blackburn; son, Gregory Blackburn; daughter, Rebecca Roberts; 3 brothers, George, Gary, and Goble Blackburn; 5 sisters; and 4 grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held at 1p.m., Friday, October 7 at Lucas and Son funeral Home. The presiding minister is Kermit Wright.
G.C. Childress Sr.
The Rev. G.C. Childress Sr., 77, of McAndrews, died Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011, at the South Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital.
He was born in Chattaroy, W.Va., Aug. 16, 1934, the son of the late Curtis and Martha Childs Childress.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur Childress and Bernard Childress.
G.C. was a graduate of Liberty High School in Williamson, W.Va. He was a retired coal miner formerly employed by Eastern Coal Company at Stone and was a member of United Mine Workers of America. He was a member of the Logan Street First Baptist Church and became a minister in 1970. He currently was serving as pastor of the 1st Mt. Zion Baptist Church in East Williamson and the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Pikeville.
Additionally, he was a 33rd degree mason, an active member of the Williamson Crown Lodge #16 where he was Most Worshipful Master, a Shriner, and member of the Order of the Eastern Star Evening Tide Chapter #26.
G.C. was united in holy matrimony to Edith Van Johnson, who survives, of McAndrews. Also surviving are their children, John Childress (Donna), George Childress (Denisa) and Curtis Childress (Mary); a grandson whom they raised, Curtis Childress II (Shelly); four brothers, James Thomas Childress (Lois) of Cross Lanes, W.Va., Walter Childress (Mable), Ronald Childress and Marvin Childress (Beverly), all of Williamson, W.Va.; one sister, Frances Lampkin (Willie) of Parkersburg, W.Va.; his grandchildren, Michael, Curtis II, Bradley, Jonathan, Sami, Jodi, Joshua, Alex and Destiney; and two great-grandchildren, Jaliayha and Macey.
He is also survived by a host of other extended family and friends.
G.C. was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He loved the Lord, loved to talk and he never met a stranger.
Homegoing services will be conducted at noon Friday, Oct. 7, in the Logan Street First Baptist Church, Williamson, with Pastor Rev. Gerald Dotson officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy, with Marcus Johnson, Christian Johnson, Michael Childress, Bradley Childress, Curtis Childress II, Jonathan Childress, Deacon Richard Wright Sr., Deacon James Roach, and Deacon Douglas Stargill serving as pallbearers.
Arrangements are under direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, in the funeral home chapel. The body will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to services on Friday.
James Hatfield
James Leon Hatfield, 76, of Phelps, died Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in Pike County, Feb. 6, 1935, the son of the late Tomps and Annie Boyd Hatfield.
He was a retired coal miner.
He is survived by two sons, Rocky T. Hatfield of Phelps and James R. Hatfield of Stone; one daughter, Delores Fugate of Hazard; two brothers, Delmer Hatfield of Ransom and Ezra Hatfield of Belfry; three sisters, Bonita Bevins and Pauline Smith, both of Ransom, Cleo Woodword of Florida; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 7, in the Bluesprings Freewill Baptist Church with Emery Varney and Junior Church officiating. Burial will follow in the family cemetery, Middlefork of Blackberry. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Visitation is at the church with special services at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Harlon Cisco
Harlon L. Cisco, 68, of Beech Creek, W.Va., died Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011, at his home.
He was born in Glen Alum, W.Va., Feb. 13, 1943, the son of Marie Bell Cisco of Varney, W.Va., and the late Marion Cisco.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ann Christian Cisco; one son, James Willard Cisco; and one sister, Yvonne Lawson.
He was a retired coal miner and of the Church of Christ faith.
Besides his mother, he is survived by three sons, Jeffrey Cisco of North Matewan, W.Va., James Cisco of Delbarton, W.Va., Christopher Cisco of Verner, W.Va.; one daughter, Jennifer Cisco of Beech Creek; two brothers, John L. Cisco of Varney and Ernie Cisco of Beech Creek; two sisters, Irene Lawson of Matewan and Emmalene Murphy of Beech Creek; one half-brother, Lawrence Miller of Mullens, W.Va.; and two grandchildren, Sarah Cisco and Gracy Cisco.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, in the Ben Creek Church of Christ with Evangelist Gene Clemons officiating. Burial will follow in the Steele Cemetery, Beech Creek. Arrangements are under direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.
Ernest Hall
Ernest Hall, 83, of Little Robinson Creek, died Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011, at his home.
He was born in Knott County, Dec. 26, 1927, the son of the late Sam and Bertha Hall.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Curtis Hall; two sisters, Zelda Newsome and Emma Centers.
He was a disabled coal miner, employer of Island Creek Coal Company and a Deacon at Buckfield Freewill Baptist Church.
He is survived by one son, Jerry Wayne Hall of Little Robinson Creek; two daughters, Loretta Stanley and Doris Ann Hamilton, both of Little Robinson Creek; one brother, Ralph Hall of Illinois; five sisters, Ellen Newsome, Julia Bryant and Mildred Hall, all of Virgie, Irene Ellis of Ohio and Cora Scharf of Arizona; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Free Will Baptist ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Rob Newsome Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas 7 Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Irvin Hatfield
Irvin "Curley" Hatfield, 86, of Slaters Branch, Ky. passed away Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at his home.
He was born at Hardy, June 29, 1925, the son of the late Fred B. and Laura Hatfield.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Vivian Francis Ledford; two brothers, Fred B. Hatfield and an infant brother that died at birth.
He served in World War II, was a coal miner and a member of the United Mine Workers of America.
He is survived by his second wife, Evelyn Ann Slater; two sons, Rodney Gail Hatfield and Charles Jeffery; one daughter, Rebecca Ann Hatfield.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 17, in the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Hatfield Cemetery, Blackberry, Ky.
Arrangements are under direction of R. E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Harry McCrary
Harry Lee McCrary, 82, of Owensboro, died Wednesday, September 14, 2011, at his home.
He was born in Winchester, April 21, 1929, in Winchester, the son of the late Harry Lee and Minnie Mae McCrary.
He was a graduate of Pikeville High School and a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict. He worked for the G.E. Appliance Park in Louisville, then went to work for the L&N Railroad. He transferred to Owensboro in January 1960 and began his employment with American Olean Tile, where he retired after 25 years of employment. He was a charter member of the Owensboro Antique Car Club, the Evansville and Owensboro Model A clubs, the Owensboro Isotopes Model Airplane Club and sang in the SPEBSQSA Barber Shop Quartet.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Kathryn McCrary; one brother, Paul Douglas McCrary of Lake Tahoe; and one sister, Patricia Mitchell of Louisville.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Doris “Dottie” McCrary; one son, Jim McCrary of Owensboro; two daughters, Bonnie Sue McCrary of Owensboro and Terri Rose Streb of Mesquite, Texas; and five grandsons.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, in the James H. Davis Funeral Home & Crematory Chapel. Private burial will be in the Resurrection Cemetery, Owensboro. Arrangements are under direction of James H. David Funeral Home & Crematory of Owensboro.
Visitation is from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Herschel Wells
Herschel Wells, 72, of Ashville, Ohio, died Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011, at his home.
He was born in Wheelwright, Oct. 23, 1938, the son of the late Francis N. and Liza Slone Wells.
He was employed as a welder by Lenox Industries, until it closed, then retired from Columbus Showcase. He was a sheet metal union member.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, James Wells, Hobert Wells and Joseph Wells; and three sisters, Maxine Sisk, Wilda Kohler and Thelma Wells.
Funeral arrangements are under direction of Oliver-Cheek Funeral Home, 420 W. Main St., Ashville, Ohio. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Michael Stephens
Michael Stephens, 61, of Hueysville, died Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011, at the St. Joseph-Martin Hospital, Martin.
He is survived by his wife, Frances E. Hoover Stephens.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Salt Lick Community Church, Hueysville with the clergyman Dolvin Ratliff officiating. Burial will follow in the Stephens Cemetery, Hueysville.
Visitation is anytime at the church.
Betty Thompson
Betty Sue Thompson, 75, of Zebulon, died Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Pikeville, March 8, 1936, the daughter of the late Ferrell and Lassie Thompson.
She was retired from Dawahare’s as a sales clerk and was a member of the Zebulon Church of Christ.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, John Richard Thompson; one nephew, Barry Kinney.
She is survived by one sister, Dorothy Kinney of Zebulon; two nieces, Pagette Roberts of Prestonsburg and Bridget Thompson of Zebulon; one nephew Burt Kinney of Pikeville; two great nephews, Barry Richard Kinney II of Elkhorn, and Austin Kinney, of Pikeville; one great niece, Olivia Kinney of Pikeville; two great great nephews, Tyler and Barry Richard Kinney III, both of Elkhorn City.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at Community Funeral Home of Zebulon with Shane Lockard officiating. Burial will follow in the Burnett Family Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday at Community funeral home at 5 p.m. and special services beginning at 7.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Zebulon Church of Christ Building fund.
