Bernice Hensley

Bernice M. Hensley, 92, of Nolan, W.Va., died Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, at her home.

She was born in Maher, W.Va., June 4, 1919, the daughter of the late Floyd McNeely and Marinda Harper McNeely.

She was a nurse, retired from Williamson Memorial Hospital after many years, and a member of Borderland Baptist Church and a former member of Calvary Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Ray Hensley; two brothers ;and four sisters.

She is survived by two sons, Ralph Hensley of Pratt, W.Va., and Rudy Hensley of South Williamson; one daughter, Deborah Maynard of Princeton, W.Va.; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, in the Weaver Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Rick Gannon and Rudy Spencer officiating. Burial followed in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Maher. Arrangements were under direction of Weaver Mortuary of West Williamson.

Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church or Borderland Baptist Church.

Justin Jordan

Justin Scott Jordan, 24, of Delbarton, W.Va., died Friday, Dec. 16, 2011, at Newtown, W.Va.

He was born Nov. 13, 1987, the son of Charles J. Jordan and the late Angela Rose Skeens Jordan.

He worked as a pizza deliverer for Lisa’s Pizza in Matewan, W.Va.

Besides his father, he is survived by his wife, Melissa Jean Jordan; two sons, Jonathan Mounts and Anthony Lariccia; one daughter, Alyssa Jordan; three brothers, Charles Jordan, Timothy Russell and Eddie Russell; and two sisters, Kimberly and Stephanie Jordan.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, in the Chafin Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Dave Hunt officiating. Burial followed in the family cemetery. Arrangements were under direction of Chafin Funeral Home of Delbarton.

Mary Little

Mary Merlyn Little, 81, died Dec. 18, 2011, at Pikeville Medical Center.

She was born in Pike County, March 17, 1930, the daughter of the late Jim and Nannie Luster.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fletcher Little; and one son, James Carl Dyer.

She is survived by one brother, James Junior Luster of Joes Creek; three sisters, Ruby Tibbs and Ema Luster, both of Pikeville, and Monette Layne of Florida; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, in the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Arrangements are under direction of Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Visitation is after 6 p.m. Wednesday with special services at 7 p.m.

Geneva Martin

Geneva Martin, 73, of Williamson, W.Va., died Monday, Dec. 19, 2011, at Williamson Memorial Hospital.

She was born in New Camp, Oct. 1, 1938, the daughter of the late Jack Martin and Mamie Martin.

She was a homemaker and attended the Logan Street First Baptist Church.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

She is survived by three brothers, Ronald Martin, Joseph Martin and Donald Martin; and three nieces.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under direction of Chambers Funeral Services of Matewan.

Crystal Morrison

Crystal Mae Morrison, 82, of Brushy Road, Varney, died Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2011, at Pikeville Medical Center.

She was born in Ionia County, Mich., March 11, 1929, the daughter of the late Alvin Miller and Mary Ann Miller.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Lloyd Miller; and three sisters, Ilene Kropp, Katherine Dewitt and Mary Elizabeth Richardson.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Piso Freewill Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Morrison Jr. of Pikeville; four children, Bruce Richardson and Robert Kevin Morrison, both of Salina, Kan., Deborah Guinn of Grand Rapids, Mich., Ruth Bogar of Sidney; one brother, Carl Miller of Ionia; nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at noon Friday, Dec. 23, in the Community Funeral Home Chapel with Bill Maynard and Bobby Mullins officiating. Burial will follow in the Apple Orchard Cemetery, Varney. Arrangements are under direction of Community Funeral Home of Zebulon.

Lynna Preece

Lynna Renall Preece, 45, of Hatfield, died Friday, Dec. 16, 2011, at the South Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital.

She was born in Ohio, March 7, 1966, the daughter of the late William “Bud” and Shirley Hunt Harrison.

She was a homemaker and of the Freewill Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother Junior Bowen; and one sister, Stella Sawyer.

She is survived by her husband, Cecil Ray Preece; two daughters, Kashawnna Slone and Alandra Wellman, both of Hatfield; one brother, Buddy Bowen of Ohio; three sisters, Dixie Bowen, Brenda Greene and Mary Helen McCoy, all of Ohio; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, in the Hatfield Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Ray Taylor and Bro. Earl White officiating. Burial followed in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Maher, W.Va. Arrangements were under direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.

Joyce Ratliff

Joyce Ratliff, 72, of Edgarton, W.Va., died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011, at the South Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital.

She was born in Glen Alum, W.Va., Dec. 19, 1938, the daughter of the late William Stewart Croaff and Mary Ocie Matney Croaff.

She was a homemaker.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, William “Billy” S. Croaff; and four sisters, Myrtle, Virginia, Ruth and Clara Nell.

She is survived by her husband, Darrell Ratliff; two sons, Barry D. Ratliff and Ricky D. Ratliff; one daughter, Joy L. Dotson; two brothers, Eddie Croaff and Larry Croaff; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday, Dec. 22, in the Freeburn Church of God with the Rev. Johnny Fields officiating. Burial will follow in the Croaff Family Plot, Blackberry City, W.Va., Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Chambers Funeral Home of Matewan, W.Va.

Visitation is in the funeral home chapel from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday with special services at 7 p.m. The body will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to services Thursday.

Terry Smith

Terry Michael Smith, 50, of Mouthcard, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011, at Pikeville Medical Center.

He was born in Chicago, March 10, 1961, the son of Carrie Adams Ramey of Elkhorn City and the late Dewey Smith.

He was a coal truck driver, a volunteer Cub Master for Pack #803 of Feds Creek, and a Christian.

In addition to his mother, Carrie Adams Ramey, and husband, Jimmie, he is survived by his wife, Patricia Matney Smith; one son, Michael Smith of Mouthcard; one brother, Perry Allen Smith of Mouthcard;.Carrie Adams Ramey and husband, Jimmie, he was survived by one son, Michael Smith of Mouth Card, KY; One brother, Perry Allen Smith of Mouthcard; and a special mother-in-Law, Bessie Matney Justice, and husband Dolan of Mouthcard.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, in the Mountain View Church of Christ, Lick Creek, with Evangelists Joe Hall and Frank Crum officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va. Arrangements are under direction of Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home of Grundy, Va.

Elmer Spence II

Elmer Ray Spence II, 45, of Delbarton, W.Va., died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011, at his home.

He was born in Williamson, W.Va., July 7, 1966.

He is survived by his father, Elmer R. Spence and his stepmother, Levon Sue Spence of Delbarton; one brother, Frank Edward Spence of Lick Creek, W.Va.; and one sister, Claudett Morrison of Williamson.

As per his request, his body will be cremated and there will be no services.

Arrangements are under direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.

Ruth Sword

Ruth Mae Canterbury Sword, 88, of Joes Creek, died Friday, Dec. 16, 2011, at Pikeville Medical Center.

She was born in Pikeville, Dec. 2, 1923, the daughter of the late Joe Canterbury and Florence Allen Canterbury.

She was a homemaker.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Columbus Sword; and two daughters, Gladys Sword and Delta Gibson.

She is survived by three sons, Ray Sword, Clyde Sword and Columbus Sword Jr.; three daughters, Dorothy Coleman, Carroll Scott and Edith Farmer; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 19, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Billy Ford officiating. Burial followed in the Sword Cemetery, Joes Creek. Arrangements were under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Leonard Thompson

Leonard Thompson, 87, of Varney, W.Va., formerly of Nolan, W.Va., died Friday, Dec. 16, 2011, at Kingsbrook Life Care Center, Ashland.

He was born in Floyd County, Nov. 22, 1924, the son of the late Greely Thompson and Della Crawford Thompson Spradlin.

He was a coal miner and factory worker, a U.S. Army veteran who served during World War II, and was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Larce Thompson, Remus Elkins, James Elkins, William Albert Elkins and Rush “Pee Wee” Spradlin.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Flora Floyd Thompson; his children, Larce E. Thompson of Columbus, Ohio, Leonard L. Thompson of Ashland, Linda McCoy of Pickerington, Ohio, Della Sue Johns of Jersey Shore, Penn., Rose Cullop of Forest Hills, Diana Burgett of Hatfield; two brothers, Roy Spradlin of Naugatuck, W.Va., and Ronald Spradlin of Virginia; three sisters, Jean Cantrell of Hatfield, Shirley Scott of Virginia and Bonnie Kerr of Tennessee; 15 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 19, in the Hatfield Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Bostic officiating. Entombment followed in the Mountain View Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Maher, W.Va. Arrangements were under direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.

Military services were conduced by DAV Chapter 141, Belfry.
